In this PACKED interview with Jaz Designs (aka Your Pricing Queen) Jessamy chats with Jaz about the one thing that makes most creatives squirm in their seats - money, honey. We chat about how a rising tide lifts all boats, not devaluing work just because you enjoy it, the myths of the starving artist and work/life balance, resting in your own way, the power and detriment of going all-in, feeling creatively inspired by running a business, identity shifts, confidence coming from mind shifts and information cultivation, you're not “asking for money” - you're letting them know the ticket price, you are giving - not taking, the importance of information gathering, client red flags, creating processes and checklists, boundaries, worth vs value, businesses exist to make money (the client's AND YOURS), your self worth is not tied to what you create, quantifying outcomes not creativity, imposter syndrome and comparison, reframing imposter syndrome as a sign you're trying something new, saying yes when you know it should have been a no, resentment pricing, FAFs (fuck around fees), being a service provider and advisor, not an employee, white label situations, taking a problem-solving lens, cheese puns, pro bono work, reciprocal value, being big enough to serve someone but small enough to know them, everything is currency - you just need to get creative with it, collaborating with clients, and how working together builds mutual respect. Welcome to the Evolvepreneur (After Hours) Show I am your Special Host Christine Campbell Rapin Join me today where we dig deep with our guests and get you the best concepts and strategies to fast-track your business. My very special guest today is Jasmine Holmes ... Jasmine is your Pricing Queen and Design Superwoman. Teal-clad, total foodie and super passionate about pricing and business for creatives. For her, creative is anyone who solves a problem in a non traditional way, and that skill right there, the ability to create something that didn't exist yesterday is more valuable than many realize. Her love of teaching pricing was born out of necessity, often having confused creatives slide into her dms wanting to know how to price with confidence, clarity and condiments. This past year she has been fortunate enough to teach through courses, masterclasses and group coaching, as well as through her online community, email list and resources she provides on her website. Almost every creative she's ever met is discounting their worth before they even serve their genius, and she's passionate about changing that recipe for success. Are you guilty of people pleasing, perfectionism or overthinking? And how does that come across in your business and your pricing? You may not immediately think the two are connected, but the emotional baggage that causes your people-pleasing or perfectionist habits impacts on what you're willing to settle for in business, especially with boundaries and pricing. It's an important topic and one I chat to Natalie Lue about for this podcast episode. Natalie is a recovering people pleaser herself, and in this episode she's going to help you discover the emotional baggage behind those habits and give you some tips to put that baggage down, and set better prices, boundaries and standards in your business. In this week's episode of The Pricing Queen, we're going to be covering: Why people pleasers struggle with their pricing [2:47] The problems behind pricing too low [4:21] How to let go of the guilt that causes you to overdeliver [7:47] The importance of valuing your work - and pricing accordingly [9:35] Trial and error pricing and finding that sweet spot [12:06] Paying attention to the data in your business [14:52] Finding your secret sauce and how that helps clarify why people come to you [17:11] The problem with undervaluing what you do [19:54] Pricing may not be your main problem [20:51] Trusting your instincts when pricing [24:14] How to deal with client who have limited budgets [27:00] What to include in your onboarding process to minimise payment issues [28:00] How to overcome ‘fantasy money' issues and non-payments [33:08] Resources: Sign up for the ‘Sailing Over The VAT Threshold' masterclass on Tuesday 20th September - https://thepricingqueen.com/vat Get help with working out your pricing - http://www.thepricingqueen.com/pricing-calculator Natalie's website - https://www.baggagereclaim.co.uk/ Follow Natalie on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/natlue/ Listen, rate, and subscribe! So many people I know are really terrified of going over the VAT threshold in the UK. But it isn't something to be scared of - it's actually a good thing for your business! Do you know what your business will look like in 12 months' time? A lot of people will say forecasting isn't worth bothering with. After all, why would you forecast and look back at the last couple of years and what happened in that time? But I firmly believe that you should always be looking to know where you're going. Because if you don't know where your business is headed, you're just going to keep drifting around and missing potential opportunities and growth. So in this episode of The Pricing Queen, we'll be covering: Why it's essential to have a clear sense of direction in business [1:28] Why 20% is an important figure when it comes to client worth [2:24] When to consider the VAT threshold and when to plan for it [3:02] What things you need to take stock of when creating your plan [3:53] The value of 90-day sprints [5:00] Resources: Get help with working out your pricing - http://www.thepricingqueen.com/pricing-calculator Book a chat to see how I can help you with planning your next 12 months - thepricingqueen.com/chat Listen, rate, and subscribe! But depending on your goals, it's worth thinking about investment or borrowing, as they can help you quickly grow your business to the level you want. Funding and investment isn't an area I'm an expert in, so it was great to chat with Chartered Accountant and founder of Raised Up Finance, Deborah Edwards, on this subject. Pricing is one of the big issues business owners and freelancers struggle with. Far too many entrepreneurs opt for hourly billing when they start out, only to get stuck in the cycle of charging per hour for their expertise. But it's a pricing model that limits earning potential and stunts any decent level of business growth. It also makes it difficult to outsource because you're constantly thinking about your bottom line - it's why I always recommend moving to fixed prices and packages as soon as possible! So in this episode of The Pricing Queen, we'll be covering: Why it's so important to get your pricing right [2.21] The frustrations business owners face around pricing and business strategy [3:59] How to set your fixed prices [5:40] How to move existing clients from hourly billing to fixed pricing [7:15] What to focus on and monitor once you have fixed pricing in place [7:45] How to prevent scope creep [8:42] The key thing to do, if you're pricing for new and ad-hoc services [11:11] Discovery calls and the questions you need to answer to price accurately [17:37] Why you need to cut your potential clients some slack! How can you pay yourself more? It's something many small and micro businesses, struggle with. When it's just you, it can be difficult to make sure you're paying yourself because you tend not to think of yourself as a salaried person or an employee in the business. But actually, you need to start thinking about yourself as somebody else you need to pay and not just an afterthought. It's not just about paying yourself whatever's left in the bank at the end of the month. So in this episode of The Pricing Queen, we'll look at how you can make changes to pay yourself more. We'll be covering: Why paying yourself whatever's left is damaging your business [1:09] The first thing you need to look at [1:46] The easiest way to earn more money [2:05] What price pressure is and how it affects you [2:22] How to put up your prices - option #1 [2:55] How to put up your prices - option #2 [4:07] How to put up your prices - option #3 [4:22] How to put up your prices - option #4 [4:44] Making sure people are putting their money where their mouth is [5:00] Paying yourself first, not as an afterthought [5:42] Resources: http://www.thepricingqueen.com/pricing-calculator Listen, rate, and subscribe! How can automation help with your pricing? If you think automation has nothing to do with pricing and the other financial aspects of your business, you're wrong! Automation can help you get more for your time without working harder or longer. And if you're charging via fixed-cost packages or retainers (as I recommend!), automation enables you to charge more for your time and not get penalised for being more efficient. In this episode of The Pricing Queen, I talk to business process automation specialist Kelly Goss. Kelly works specifically with a no-code automation platform called Zapier. It's an excellent platform for utilising different automations within your business, and you'll find some great automation ideas sprinkled throughout this podcast! We'll also be covering: What Zapier is and how it can help you quickly set up automations [2:13] How I've used automations to revolutionise my business [5:08] Tips for improving your processes with automations [7:02] The most significant benefits of Zapier and the two simple things you need to know to get started [8:20] Why it's never too early to begin automating and the first step to take [9:17] How automation helps with pricing [11:47] How much time and money automation can save you [12:30] When to outsource and when to automate [14:22] How to still have the personal touch with automation [17:00] Resources: http://www.thepricingqueen.com/pricing-calculator Kelly's website, free resources, latest book and automation help: Solvaa.co.uk Listen, rate, and subscribe! Do you know what you should and shouldn't be asking your accountant about? That may seem like a strange question to ask, but it's an essential one to explore. So many business owners are expecting their accountant to deal with things they're not paying for - and it's causing unnecessary feelings of stress and disappointment. So in this episode of The Pricing Queen, we'll be talking about the expectations many business owners have about their accountants, along with the things they should (and shouldn't!) be doing for you. We'll be covering: Can an accountant help you with pricing? [1:26] How and what to pay yourself [2:07] What an accountant is responsible for - and what's on you [3:11] Tax bills and putting money aside [4:04] Who's responsible for financial performance [4:43] Why you accountant doesn't need to understand your business [5:45] Forward planning, cash flow and affording to invest [6:37] Resources: http://www.thepricingqueen.com/pricing-calculator Listen, rate, and subscribe! Do you have a contingency plan in place if you need to take time out of your business? It's a subject that can seem quite boring on the surface, and one many business owners avoid. But as I've personally experienced, it's important and essential to think about it and create a contingency plan to cover your options. Because you can't always forecast when you're going to need to take time out from your business - but you can have a plan in place that helps cover most scenarios. In this episode of The Pricing Queen, we'll be talking about how you can't always forecast when you need to take time out from your business - but you can (and should!) have a plan in place that helps cover most scenarios. It will help clarify: The initial questions I had to ask myself about my business when first diagnosed [1:10] Different scenarios you need to factor in and make a plan to cover [2:32] The tough questions you need to ask yourself [3:27] Creating a financial buffer for your business [5:15] How systems and processes can help you take time out of your business [6:21] How to get started with your own contingency plan [6:55] Resources: http://www.thepricingqueen.com/pricing-calculator Listen, rate, and subscribe! What if - just for a moment you considered that your clients aren't paying just for a trip, but rather "they're paying you to recommend, recognize and have their best interests at heart". This isn't something that stops when they hand over the money - in fact in travel, this continues all the way through the moment they get home and get to tell you how amazing their trip is. Your clients are coming to YOU to solve their problems When you solve peoples problems, the value is priceless. And by charging fees, not only can you serve your clients better - you will be able to take back the freedom, flexibility and time with your family because you're no longer putting endless clients through the books for pennies on the dollar. Fees are there to help you do your job better. To be able to service the individual clients better - because you will have the time. When you have the confidence to charge fees - and know your value, it allows you to focus adding value. Now Is The Best Time To Change Your Policies If you've never charged fees before - this is a great time to start. With the difficulties many travelers have faced - cancellations, reschedules, delays and all of the gobbly goop of restrictions and rules, people are looking for an expert who can explain this all to them. Yesterdays price has a best before date and tomorrows price doesn't yet exist When you give your clients a heads up - you give them a choice. Pricing is a choice and an opportunity for your clients to decide if they see value in what you offer. If you are conveying the solutions you offer - they will always see value in it. In the end - YOU are the one who decides if your clients got value from what you did for them. In the end - Travel is a luxury item - if you sell it cheaper - you are cheapening the experience, the industry and the perception of the client. In this episode: How to fix a price and still make money How to create boundaries with your client How to communicate new pricing structures with existing clients Don't be afraid to outsource Price in less than 15 minutes! Sally quashes the popular notion that fixed pricing means you won't charge enough. Do you charge the client for the hours you've spent ‘thinking' about the project? What about calls to the client – do you charge for those? Hourly billing can be messy and unpredictable, especially when the client doesn't know how much they're going to have to spend. It might take you longer than expected which could frustrate a client who was expecting to pay less. But invariably with any task you will always get quicker and more efficient at it and hourly billing will penalise this. Sally recommends recording your time accurately for each element of your job so you can self-assess how long a project has takes you, allowing you to quote effectively for future jobs. Sally warns against diluting your value by doing lots more hours. Sally explains how fixed pricing allows you to set clear boundaries with your client to prevent scope creep and manage expectations. Be clear about what your price includes (and if necessary, what it doesn't!) Sally recommends starting any new pricing structures with new clients and then introduce it to existing clients based on your existing knowledge of how long each client's work takes. It's ok to experiment with pricing, changing it as necessary with new clients until you get it right. Be wary of other people's money stories and don't be afraid to put prices out there. Sally explains how the price could cast a reflection on the quality of the work that will be delivered, so don't worry about cheap competitors. In this episode: Why hourly billing is nuts! What is the way you should be getting paid for your services. Why billing and pricing are not the same thing. The importance of scoping last. The ‘why' conversation. Why you should always offer three price options. Retainers and when to use them. Former software developer and now value-based consulting guru, Jonathan Stark talks to Sally about some of his thoughts around hourly billing and why it's nuts! He covers why hourly billing is a backwards pricing strategy, the ‘artificial ceiling' and how hourly billing caps your pricing and limits your income. It can also create trust fractures in the client relationship and encourages scope creep. Jonathan also shares his thoughts about why hourly billing could be considered unethical. Jonathan discusses the difference between pricing and billing - why you should price for your work and not bill for your time and looks at the different ways to price your services. Jonathan and Sally chat about ‘the why conversation', designed to help you price your services effectively. Jonathan outlines how it can help you write the best proposal for winning big business and create an effective plan for your client. He shows that by asking three specific diagnostic questions (Why do you want to do this? Why now? Why me?) will help root out the business motivation to ensure you can deliver the right outcome and decide if the project is a good fit for you. Jonathan looks at pricing options and explains why there should always be three levels. He also covers how these levels should reflect what the solution is worth to the client and how you can be creative in your scope. He also provides an overview of retainers, why and when these are an ok way to price your services. Jonathan packs some amazing analogies into this episode making these revelatory pricing tips easy to understand and a real joy to listen to. You will never bill hourly again! In this episode: Charging more or less than your competitors. How to increase your prices. Pain in the ass tax. Dealing with scope creep. Client boundaries. Can I charge more than my competitors? Sally breaks down this popular question and discusses reasons why it is ok to charge more than your competitors. It is important to look at your personal brand and unique offering when you are comparing yourself against competitors. Sally advocates offering exclusive products or packages to make it harder to benchmark your business. She also discusses why you do not want to be the cheapest either. Putting your prices up is easy with new clients, but for existing clients Sally covers off the important aspects which make for a smoother transition such as contract terms, working relationships and why regular price increases are best. Sally discusses scope creep, where a client may be getting you to work extra without payment e.g., team lunches, demanding faster response times etc. Sally advises how to tackle this early on to avoid this impacting your earning potential and how client boundaries can prevent scope creep from occurring.
