We recently had doula/photographer/videographer Maegan Hall on the show, but now we're having her back with one of her clients to talk about the healing power of birth photography. We always say on this show, birth is unpredictable. Emma, a local psychotherapist so graciously shares her birth story via a blog with Maegan as well as this interview. She writes, “Birth brings us to the end of ourselves in ways that we cannot (and maybe aren't supposed to) anticipate. There are all kinds of childbirth classes intended to prepare us for labor itself, but it seems there is far less conversation around making sense of the birth after the fact.“Although Emma's birth was not what she had anticipated, she was able to use the birth images captured by Maegan, to provide clarity around her birth story, and ultimately aid in her ability to process the birth. Today, you get the trifecta! Doula, birth photographer and breastfeeding advocate Leilani Rogers shares about her breastfeeding awareness passion project, which was an outgrowth of her work as a birth photographer. Those two passions then led her to obtain her doula certification. Her knowledge and experience in all three is certainly a gift! In this episode, we chat about: How did you find your calling in birth photography? Your birth photography accolades are many! You even hosted the public breastfeeding awareness project for five years. What was the purpose of that project and why were you inspired to create it? How did birth photography lead you to pursue certification as a doula? What does a doula do, particularly in the case of a high-risk pregnancy? What is a "doulatog" as you share on your website? Women and their partners might be apprehensive about hiring a birth photographer, a doula or both, what would you say to alleviate some of those fears? When you're considering hiring a photographer or a doula, what are some questions you should ask to ensure it's a good fit? Do all doctors/hospitals allow for a photographer or a doula? What questions should a new mom ask? How can a NICU mom benefit from services like birth photography or a doula? What's your best advice to a parent who wants to hire a photographer or a doula? Leilani Rogers became interested in birth as a young mom with preterm labor with all four of her children. She became more empowered and informed with each pregnancy, and when she documented her first birth in 2011 her life as an artist intersected with her love for and knowledge of birth perfectly. She is also a trained doula and a mentor to budding young photographers worldwide. After years of infertility, Jalina was led through healing and went on to have 4 sons, though not without significant losses in between. While her first 3 sons were all born in hospitals (albeit barely, in the case of #3!), she always felt she was missing out on something, and that the thing she really needed had nothing to do with the hospital. When she found herself pregnant with her 4th, it didn't make sense to go to the hospital again... but the leap from there to free birth wasn't an easy or light decsion. All the same, God led her and her husband to that plan, and with Brooke in their corner as a virtual birth keeper, they had a totally unassisted birth between dinner and bedtime on an ordinary weekday night. As doulas consider expanding into other birth-related services, birth photography is often a common consideration. It seems like the perfect mesh, doula skills paired with photography skills equals the perfect match. But can a doula be both at the same time? While it seems like a simple answer, there are many factors that doulas often fail to consider. Will doula support or photography take priority when a client needs hands-on support? What happens if doula support is needed simultaneously as the one "perfect shot" a client wants presents itself? Join us as we take a deep dive into the ins and outs of providing birth photography and labor support.

Lacey Barratt is a multi-award winning Photographer and Doula from Melbourne. Owner of the Exposing Birth platform and maverick, marvellous (and a little bit unorthodox) coach. For the last 10 years, Lacey has not only created a stir with her controversial images promoting women's rights, but she has also cemented herself as one of this country's most talented and outspoken birth photographers. Lacey has been known to be unapologetically raw. She encapsulates the depths of humanity in a single image. Ballsy and emotionally attached, Lacey strives to have women empowered through her imagery and teachings.Lacey lives and works on the Traditional lands of the Wurundjuri people of the Kulin nation.
