    Wasting time thinking about why you don't want to fail?

    “If you want to be successful, why are you wasting time thinking about how much you don't want to fail?” It was a simple question that changed how I approached business and life. Fear of failure is very powerful, but what's more powerful is fear of success. When I support my clients in their ability to achieve more in life, I ask them what's going through their mind that's preventing them from going after it, whether it's talking to that attractive person, sending that email to a potential investor or even going to the gym. Among their responses is often, “Well, I don't know what to say" or “What if she doesn't like what I have to say?" People bombard themselves with “what ifs.” I get it, all these scenarios could possibly happen, but the truth is they haven't yet. Nevertheless, the uncertainty around these “what ifs” takes away your courage and confidence to go and make that move, even knowing it could level up your business and life.     I gotta be honest with you. These last couple weeks have been TOUGH ones. It was a couple of those weeks that we all have from time to time as entrepreneurs. Even after 25 years. I ended up getting Covid a couple weeks ago and spending time quarantining to the bedroom for what seemed like an eternity. I had no energy to do any work and as I laid there all I could do was watch tv or think - which can be good and bad. I wasn't stressed about not being able to work, but the more time that I wasn't working in my business the more my thinking started going south and I found myself thinking about getting a job.     Which is more precious ... Time or Money?

One standing firm in that time is limited and you only have 24 hours in a day, so it's more precious than money. But, I think it's also because they want to prove to people that they've made it. They want to prove themselves in the industry and show that they are worth it and deserving of the 5,10,20,100k weeks/months, whatever.     You may have seen my social media post last week on 2-2-22 where I made my last post for my business and said good-bye to social media, but I wanted to talk about it on this podcast as well. I'm going to be transparent - like I always am - this was hard for me to do even though it wasn't aligning with me. As you know, anytime you shift and do things differently, your ego shows up and starts making you question yourself. What if you can't get clients outside of social media? … I know I can because I have and I've built businesses long before social media was even around. Where are you going to find clients without social media? … There are over 150 different ways to find clients off social media and I'm pretty sure they'll work because I've used them before. Once I made the decision and hit the publish button, I had a wonderful sense of relief. I didn't feel addicted anymore. I felt free, I felt back in charge of my business and the best part was that I didn't have the stress and overwhelming feeling of needing to make a post or create a story.     I see a lot of coaches struggle with the idea of choosing a niche and narrowing it down. And I get it. It feels counterintuitive to focus on fewer community or audience members. Seth Godin has written several books on effective marketing, including the importance of narrowing your niche. I was reading an article he had written and I want to share an excerpt from that article: He says that the Minimum Viable Audience - a term he coined - is the smallest group that could possibly sustain you in your work. We usually think that we need to reach thousands or millions of people to have a profitable business. However, that will probably lead us to create an average product for average people. If we really want to impact other people's lives, we need to find our minimum viable audience. When we create real value for other people is when we can have a profitable business. Seth Godin also says to focus on the audience's dreams, worldviews, and energy. If you could pick the members of this audience, who would you choose? If you could pick them and needed to delight them (something that causes happiness) because you had no one else available, would your product or service improve? If you had no choice but to ignore the naysayers (they're not in the group) or the people who don't think they need you or your work, would that force you to stop compromising and start excelling? Focus on finding your minimum viable audience (your niche) and creating value for them. Instead of being bigger, focus on being better. As you do that, you will achieve profitability. Two things happen when you delight or cause happiness in your minimum viable audience: you discover it's a lot larger group than you expected they tell the others Let's dive in with some action steps to help you narrow down your niche.     The subject line of this episode is 'Crocheting + A Book List + Boundaries' and you're probably thinking - what the heck does this have to do with business? Well stick with me and I'll show you … When I first got into crocheting, it was really fun. I'd find a project I wanted to work on, buy the yarn for it, and get to it. Then, I started buying yarn without a plan of how to use it. I bought it because I liked the yarn. Before I knew it, I had beautiful yarn coming out my ears with no plans for any of it. At first, it felt amazing. But after a while, it became a burden because I'd look at all the yarn and get overwhelmed. I had W A Y too many choices. This has happened to me a few times in the real world — mainly with books and other hobbies. It's also happened in the digital world. In fact, I started a trello list of all the books that I "want to read," and there is a ridiculous amount of books on the list. Not to mention the ridiculous amount of books I've already purchased but haven't read yet. My original idea for the list was to help me keep track of what books to read next. But a list of 300 books on it is completely unusable, especially without a plan. Putting boundaries around areas that cause overwhelm is so important. So, let's talk about that ...     Let me guess - you've blocked time off to work on your business… you've got your cup of coffee (tea or whatever), your desk is cleared, you're excited to get started, you know you have a strong work ethic and you're not afraid to roll up your sleeves and get to work … so, you sit down to get something done and the first thoughts that enter your mind are … “What am I supposed to be working on?” “What do I do first?” There isn't an entrepreneur out there that hasn't found themselves in this position - and oftentimes more than once.
