Is your copy unintentionally alienating parts of its intended audience? We're getting tactical on this week's Build Your Copywriting Business podcast episode and digging into how you can keep your copywriting inclusive while still writing to a target audience. You might be thinking, "Nicki, if my creative brief says the audience is men over 50, I'm going to write to men over 50, right?" Yes, but even well-meaning writers unintentionally limit their copy because we all write from our own experiences. So, Kate and I are sharing tips for how you can avoid stereotypes and ask your clients the questions you need to ask to write the best copy possible. --------------- Mentioned in the Episode Creative Brief: The First Step to Any Successful Copywriting Project How Long Should It Take You to Write Copy? 4 Keys to Find Laser-Like Focus To Write Copy Related Links Copywriting for Nonprofits: 2 Tips to Crafting Compelling Copy How to Write Humor for Your Copywriting Clients ------------------ Get Free Copywriting Training here
#748 Is AI really killing copywriting — or is it exposing just how powerful your message needs to be? In this episode, host Brien Gearin sits down with Marisa Corcoran, founder of Copy Confident Society, to unpack why copywriting isn't “dead” in the AI era — it's more important than ever. Marisa shares her wild pivot from professional acting (yes, a Winnie the Pooh audition was the breaking point) to building a thriving copy community, and explains why business owners must “create their own stage” through platforms like podcasts, summits, or content series. You'll also learn why most “copy problems” are actually messaging problems, plus Marisa's practical Ghostbusters-inspired “Proton Pack” framework to clarify what you sell, who you help, and how to make your message memorable — so the right people remember you, rave about you, and refer you! What we discuss with Marisa: + Copy isn't dead — messaging matters + Creating your own stage + Actor's guide to copy + Messaging vs. copy problems + Standing out in a crowded market + Ghostbusters “Proton Pack” framework + Remembered, raved about, referred + Building in public + AI as a copy collaborator + Writing from lived experience Thank you, Marisa! This podcast episode focuses on transforming vague marketing promises into compelling, specific messages that resonate with your audience. Speaker A emphasizes the importance of moving beyond generic statements like "more confidence" or "financial freedom" to paint a vivid picture of what these outcomes truly look like in everyday life. By providing relatable and concrete examples, listeners can learn how to evoke emotional connections with their audience, making them more likely to engage and take action. The discussion includes practical steps for refining marketing copy, ultimately guiding businesses to communicate their value in a way that feels authentic and impactful. Tune in to discover how to elevate your messaging and effectively connect with your ideal customers. In the realm of marketing, the challenge often lies in cutting through the noise of vague promises to create compelling narratives that resonate with potential customers. The podcast explores the critical importance of specificity in marketing copy, urging marketers to transform generic statements about outcomes—such as increased confidence or financial freedom—into vivid, relatable scenarios. By illustrating what these concepts truly mean in the context of the audience's daily lives, marketers can foster a deeper emotional connection that drives engagement. The speaker emphasizes that the goal is not merely to inform but to evoke feelings and experiences that potential customers can visualize and relate to, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of the marketing message. The episode outlines a clear and actionable framework for crafting more impactful marketing copy. The approach involves three key steps: beginning with a broad promise, delving into what that promise looks like in practice, and then getting highly specific to activate the audience's imagination. The speaker provides practical examples, such as describing the joy of waking up without an alarm because a business runs seamlessly or the exhilaration of checking a bank account that allows for spontaneous adventures. These concrete illustrations help to paint a picture that potential customers can aspire to, making the marketing message not just a statement but a vision of a possible future.Listeners are encouraged to avoid common pitfalls of fluffy language and instead focus on the emotional and experiential aspects of their offerings. The podcast highlights that effective marketing is about more than just stating benefits; it's about creating a narrative that potential customers can step into and feel a part of. By transforming their copy into activating statements—such as imagining a day spent fulfilling personal dreams rather than being chained to a desk—marketers can significantly increase their chances of capturing interest and driving action. This insightful discussion offers valuable lessons for anyone looking to refine their marketing strategies and build stronger connections with their audience.Takeaways: Vague marketing promises fail to connect with audiences; specificity is key for engagement. Instead of generic terms like 'freedom', illustrate specific moments that evoke emotional responses. Using relatable scenarios helps your audience visualize their desired outcomes and connect deeply. Transform fluffy statements into activating content that paints a vivid picture of success. For example, replace 'you'll have financial freedom' with 'imagine six months of bill coverage'. Encourage your audience to feel emotions tied to success for stronger connections.

To grow your business without social media, you must have good copy written to resonate with your ideal client. Writing persuasive copy makes you more likely to convert your audience to paying clients. You must adhere to your values when writing persuasive copy and implementing website strategies to create an effective homepage. The place to start Don't get hung up on having the perfect website. Your website strategies must include taking action to accomplish what needs to be done, especially if you want to create an effective homepage or convert viewers to clients. Your website homepage is important. You have approximately 7 seconds to grab a website visitor's attention before they become uninterested and click away. Your website strategies to create an effective homepage must include Hook headlines The space above the fold, the banner area, or hero image as you may hear it called, is prime real estate to grab attention. It's a title that gets your viewer's attention. Not only grab their attention but leverage who you are talking to and how you can help them. Focus on the reader, who you help, and how you help them. Opt-in If applicable, offer a lead magnet, a free guide, a white paper, a case study, etc., so that you can have them join your email list, bring them into your community, and further nurture them. This goes beyond your general "subscribe to my email list" or "subscribe to my newsletter." You want to give them something. This is a great way to continue to warm up the audience. They probably need more, and the opt-in provides an opportunity to do this. First-person Use a personal approach and write in the first person. Writing in the first person is a way to connect with the reader and is a form of persuasive copywriting. This is an opportunity to share your story and your values, what is important to you. When you share stories about your experiences, journey, and why you are doing what you are doing, your visitors will connect with you. If visitors do not resonate with your copy, they will understand that you are not the person for them. Likewise, if visitors do resonate with your copy, they will recognize that you are the one who can solve a problem for them. They will align with your values and understand you are a good fit. Be the face of your brand. Share your story and connect with the reader by showcasing your personal brand. If you were once your ideal client, share that information. Most importantly, have at least one image of yourself on your homepage. Your website strategies must include a way for visitors to get to know you. In addition, to create an effective homepage, you must build an emotional connection with the visitor. Images are also important for SEO which is a key component to create an effective homepage. Today, I am chatting with a fellow Kelsey about what copywriting is and how to write copy that converts without being so "salesy". Kelsey Foremost used to be on TV shows like Modern Family and New Girl before she fell into comedy and sketch writing. After doing this for a few years a light bulb went off and she decided to apply her knowledge to help people in business. I am so excited to have her on the show today!Copywriting is not just writing words for your business. It is the art and science of using your brand words, to get a reader to take a desired action. It is more of a way of thinking than it is a way of writing. It has ALOT to do with confidence! Being confident in what you are sharing with the world and really believing that what you're doing and selling has value. Then, communicate that value to people who already want to pay you. That's the secret of writing good copy, you're solving a problem that already exists. You may ask, why do entrepreneurs need to care so much about this? Words are important. The words that describe your brand are found everywhere; on your website, your marketing, your emails, your social media profiles, your bios, your podcast. These are words that represent you, your brand, or your business. Tune in to hear how Kelsey teaches her students to write copy that sells and how much I learned from taking her online course.
