Crocheting started as a hobby for Deniz Evangelista in 2024, and quickly grew into a passion for her. The full-time nurse at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago says she was just looking for an escape from the stress of life and work. "I took one class, and after that, I was hooked. No pun intended. I was addicted," she recalled with a laugh. The married, mother of two says it's hard to put her finger on what drew her to the craft. "I don't know if it's the repetitive movement or what it was, but it just put me in this little bubble. It was a de-stresser, and it was just something that I suddenly loved to do," she said. And that love just kept growing, and she kept getting better and better. "I started making gifts. I would make blankets for baby showers. I would make little plushies for some of my friends kids," she recalled of her early days. Evangelista's skills surprised not just her, but everyone who saw her finished creations. "A lot of my friends and family would comment and motivate me and say, ‘hey this is really good. I think you could take this somewhere,” she remembers. So Evangelista did, launching her business, Little Loops and Layers in 2025. At first, she sold her creations on social media sites including facebook, Instagram and TikTok, and eventually she expanded to outdoor markets and spaces at AngMir in Pilsen and the Dollup Coffee location in the Prudential Building where we caught up with her. "I crochet all my plushies. I crochet blankets, some wearables and accessories. They're all handmade by me," she said proudly, adding, "it makes me really happy to see that it sparks joys in those who receive or even take a look at my products." Evangelista has gotten so good, she now takes custom orders. "I'm currently making a second order of 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar.' It's literally the caterpillar with an open mouth, and I made all the food items that get stuffed into the mouth so it's really interactive for kids and it's something that's a good addition to follow along with the book when you're reading to them," she explained. It's still hard for Evangelista to believe how far Little Loops and Layers has come in less than a year. "I'm just proud of myself. It is hard to be a working mom in this day and age so to have this and grow it into the business that it is today. It means everything to me," she said. Evangelista is also very grateful to all her family members, friends and fellow crafters who helped and encouraged her every step of the way. "I wouldn't be where I am today without them," she said, adding "it's brought me so much joy, especially when I see the reactions of how other people receive this." And she hopes to keep creating and spreading joy for years to come.

How do we find exoplanets? What is the Milky Way's “Thick Disk” and what makes it so special? To find out, Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu welcome Harvard astronomer Dr. Victoria DiTomasso, who has discovered an exoplanet system that includes exoplanet HD60079 b, which she sometimes calls “Bubbles.” As always, though, we start off with the day's joyfully cool cosmic thing, a paper just recently published about the exoplanet Teegarden Star b. Dr. DiTomasso explains the difference in exoplanet research between the observational studies she does and the theoretical modeling represented in the paper. She goes on to discuss recent, exciting theoretical work coming out of UCLA that posits that rather than have our water brought to Earth by comets, we started out as a larger, sub-Neptune planet with a larger hydrogen-helium envelope that we've lost over time. This is a pattern seen in some exoplanets, especially given the fact that Super Earth and sub-Neptune planets are the most common types of planets we've found, yet we have none in our solar system. After we find out why a planet Chuck studied was called Flagellan, it's time to find out how Victoria goes looking for exoplanets, and how she found Bubbles – with an assist from a team of citizen scientists. You'll learn about using the transit method for discovering exoplanets and identifying potential targets with TESS, the Transiting Exoplanets Survey Satellite and other instruments. Dr. DiTomasso explains the differences between the Milky Way's younger “Thin Disk,” the older “Thick Disk,” and the oldest of all, the Milky Way's “Halo.” Victoria studies the chemistry of stars to categorize them and their planets by age. She's found 4 stars in the thick disk that have “Hot Jupiters” so far, which is more impressive when you learn that we only knew about one before her work. Then it's time for a question from the audience. Grace asks, “Has the environment ever been as bad as it is now, and can it heal by itself?” Chuck, Allen and Victoria discuss changing environments on exoplanets and on Earth, the difference between long and short term change, and the possibility of recovery. Finally, Chuck asks Victoria what she does outside of astronomy, and we learn all about her new hobby, crocheting. Don't miss her show and tell, which includes Fred, the cutest crocheted dinosaur to ever appear on The LIUniverse. Victoria also talks about her other hobby, visiting museums – especially art museums. If you're watching this episode on YouTube, you get to see one of her current favorite exhibits, which consists of semi-abstracted felted wool sculptures of creatures and supernatural beings (yōkai) at the MassArt Museum (MAAM) in Boston. If you'd like to know more about Dr. Victoria DiTomasso, you can find her on LinkedIn . But to see her latest telescope photos that she took during her observing trip to the Canary Islands, check out her Instagram @victoriaditomasso. (We've included some of those photos in the episode - just another reason to watch on YouTube!) We hope you enjoy this episode of The LIUniverse, and, if you do, please support us on Patreon. When Rachael Mills took up crochet as a means to giving up smoking, little did she realise that it would one day lead to her making a Turner Prize winning doily! Last year, when the Glaswegian artist Jasleen Kaur was named the winner of the Turner Prize, crocheter Racheal was celebrating at home in Blackburn. I was thrilled when she agreed to come onto the podcast to share her side of this amazing story.Rachael's first creative job was piece work sewing at a bridal gown factory, she then went on to set up her own sewing business when she was made redundant and later on took up crochet as a hobby to keep her hands busy when she gave up smoking. She now spends her mornings on her sewing business and her afternoons crocheting commissions and teaching up to 50 people each week in her crochet classes. You can find Rachael's creative business Facebook pages here: REM Designs for sewing and Crazy Crochet Creations. For full show notes for this episode, please visit this page on the Making Stitches Podcast website. To join the mailing list for the Making Stitches Newsletter, please click onto this linkThe theme music is Make You Smile by RGMusic from Melody Loops. The Making Stitches logo was designed by Neil Warburton at iamunknown. You can support Making Stitches Podcast with running costs through Ko-fi.Making Stitches Podcast is supported by the Making Stitches Shop which offers Making Stitches Podcast merchandise for sale as well as Up the Garden Path crochet patterns created by me & illustrated by Emma Jackson.Making Stitches Podcast is presented, recorded and edited by Lindsay Weston.

Sarah is getting into Tuesday's Sacrifice mode as the weather turns cool and the witchy vibes come alive. Susie has a sound board and uses it with abandon on this episode. We hear about the Team Foxcatcher documentary, and how it is the perfect combination of murder, sports, and an eccentric millionaire. We hear facts about crocheting that are surprisingly interesting and make Sarah want to bust out her knitting equipment and get to work on a scarf that looks like a snake ate a tennis ball. How often do you think about the Roman Empire? Well, evidently men think about it a lot and Susie has a theory about why and what the female equivalent is. And our minds are blown. Susie saw Adam's therapist out in the wild, so she has some questions for Sarah about why it is a big performance of silence and awkwardness when that happens, what therapists think when they see their clients, and why Susie is hoping she made a good impression. We discuss why men are getting weaker and now have the same grip strength as women their age. We explain why moving companies have insight into your relationships. Plus, Susie reveals why you should worry about sharing your data even if you "have nothing to hide."Join our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/braincandypodSusie's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/susie_meisterSarah's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/ImSarahRiceSponsors:You can grow thicker, healthier hair AND support our show by going to https://nutrafol.com and enter the promo code: BRAINCANDY to save $15 off your first month's subscription!Control Body Odor ANYWHERE with @lumedeodorant and get $5 off off your Starter Pack (that's over 40% off) with promo code: BRAINCANDY5 at https://lumepodcast.com! #lumepodCancel your unwanted subscriptions – and manage your money the easy way – by going to https://rocketmoney.com/braincandyGo to https://www.reliefband.com and use promo code: CANDY to receive 20% off plus free shipping!More podcasts at WAVE: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/artist/wave-podcast-network/1437831426See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
