Setting Light By Father and Mother

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 23, 2026 50:54

Honoring father and mother is a lifelong command from God, carrying a promise of blessing and a serious responsibility to show respect, gratitude, and practical care. To "set light by" parents is to treat them with contempt, dismiss their worth, or regard their needs as an unwanted burden. Religious gifts, church attendance, and outward devotion cannot replace obedience to this command. Honor does not require pretending that parents have never done wrong, but their failures do not excuse personal wrongdoing or remove each person's accountability before God. Forgiveness and a refusal to act out of bitterness are essential, even in difficult family relationships. Children need to be taught this respect from their earliest years, and that responsibility continues into adulthood, especially when aging parents need care and assistance. Honoring parents is a foundational part of love and order in the home and society. God takes both its observance and its violation seriously, and genuine love for Him must reach beyond religious words into the way parents are treated.

    God Can Make You Forget

Joseph's naming of Manasseh and Ephraim shows how God brought him through years of injustice, slavery, and imprisonment into a life of peace, purpose, and fruitfulness. Manasseh means God made him forget, not by erasing the past, but by freeing him from rehearsing the bitterness, hurt, and loss that had plagued his mind. Ephraim means God made him fruitful, proving that Joseph's life was not wasted in the dungeon and that his suffering had prepared him to save and bless others. The way forward after deep hurt is not to keep circling the past in sorrow, self-pity, or bitterness, but to trust God, stop remembering what cannot be changed, and look ahead to the purpose He still has. Forgetfulness had to come before fruitfulness, and Joseph's life shows that God can restore the years that seemed lost and make a wounded life useful, fruitful, and full of blessing.

    Do Not Be Offended

Jesus warned His disciples ahead of time so they would not stumble, quit, or be stopped when persecution came. John 16 shows that the hatred they would face would not only come from the openly wicked world, but also from religious people who believed they were serving God while rejecting Christ and harming His followers. The word "offended" means more than having hurt feelings; it means being hindered, caused to stumble, or stopped in the way. Real faith must be grounded in the words of Jesus so it can endure when trouble, rejection, slander, misunderstanding, or persecution comes. True believers will continue in Christ because they belong to Him, abide in Him, and cannot be separated from Him, even when the world and false religion oppose them. Believers must know what Jesus said, expect tribulation, refuse to quit over hurt or opposition, and let their light shine faithfully in a world that hates the truth.

We are shown through Jesus' conversation with the woman at the well that true worship must be centered on the Father and grounded in both spirit and truth. Many people are willing to talk about worship and religion while avoiding the truth about their sin, just as the woman shifted the conversation from her immoral life to the question of where to worship. Jesus did not allow her diversion to take control, but lovingly and wisely brought her face to face with the truth about herself, her false worship, and her need for God. Believers must not be deceived with this common modern type of worship that is built only on emotion, music, tradition, or religious excitement, and seek true worship that responds to the truth of God's Word through the witness of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus makes it as clear as possible that if we truly belong to Christ, the world will hate us because it hated Him first. John 15 makes it clear that there are only two spiritual camps: those who belong to Christ and those who belong to the world, and that a real disciple of Christ will not fit comfortably into a world that hates God, righteousness, and truth. Kindness, good works, and religious profession will not remove the reproach of Christ, because the world's hatred is ultimately against Jesus Himself and all who bear His name. The message calls us to openly confess Christ, live unashamed of His name, bear His reproach faithfully, and remember that whatever we suffer for Him now will be worth it when we stand before Him.

    Everyday Evangelism

Christ's dealing with the woman at the well shows believers how to speak to souls wisely, personally, and with God at the center. From John 4 we see that true evangelism often happens in ordinary daily encounters, not in organized campaigns, and that believers should be ready to speak first, use everyday circumstances as a doorway, and turn the conversation toward God and eternal things. We can see how Jesus moved the woman from earthly thoughts about water and daily burdens to the deeper need of her soul, eventually bringing her sin into the light without a careless or confrontational approach. Believers need to be filled with the Word of God, alert to divine appointments, willing to speak a good word for the Lord, and careful to let God expose the heart so sinners may come face to face with Him, their sin, and the living water only Christ can give.

Jesus Loves Me This I Know

To love God supremely is the fundamental duty of man, as well as the foundation of true salvation, obedience, and Christian living. From John 15:9 and other scriptures, the Bible teaches that Christ loves His people as the Father loves Him, and He told us to "continue in his love." Real love is not merely emotion, religious zeal, loyalty, or words, but a life that gives itself to God in obedience and sacrifice. Love is not love unless it puts to death the selfish, self-centered heart, and esteems God and others more than ourselves. Do not be deceived by your emotional feelings toward God if you are living in disobedience to his Word. Love lives only in deeds, and the kind of love God commands from us is not feelings and emotion, but recognizing his greatness and goodness and laying down our lives for Him.

Using Jesus' encounter with the woman at the well in John 4, we learn that the right way to speak to someone about salvation is to begin with God Himself, as Jesus did when He turned the woman's attention away from herself and toward who He was. This man-centered gospel that presents Christ mainly as the answer to personal problems, while leaving self, sin, repentance, and the fear of God untouched is deceiving multitudes of people who will perish as a result. We must learn from Christ's example, put God first in witnessing, reject selfish forms of religion and worship, and remember that true salvation requires a sinner to be brought face to face with God, His authority, and His call to repentance.

    Why?

Asking "why" is a profound part of our human reasoning and spiritual growth. There is a difference between sincerely seeking understanding and using the question to complain against or resist God's sovereignty. We see many examples where God in the Old Testament, and Jesus in the New Testament, asked "why?" When God asks "why?" we see that these questions are meant to expose unbelief, confront fear, and lead us toward repentance. God is never searching for information when He asks why, rather, God uses the question to reveal the condition of our hearts and call us to trust His perfect will. We must learn to rest in God's character and wisdom, accepting that some mysteries belong to Him alone while giving ourselves to the truths He has clearly revealed.

Music is a divine means of communication, created by God to speak directly to the heart, soul, and spirit in a way that words do not. Using Isaiah 12:2 and the truth that "the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song," the message teaches that music is woven into God's creation and even reflects biblical patterns of completion, new beginnings, and the hope of redemption. The sermon connects the musical scale's movement from beginning to completion with Christ as Alpha and Omega, showing that just as music longs for resolution, creation itself points beyond this present world to the new heaven, new earth, and the reign of Christ. It calls believers to see music as holy rather than common, to recognize its witness to God's truth, and to take comfort that the end of this present world is not despair, but the beginning of all things made new in Christ.

    Are Your Trespasses Forgiven?

True repentance must deal not only with sins against God, but also with trespasses against other people. From Luke 17, Matthew 18, and other scriptures, we learn that trespasses involve the harm, offense, injury, or dishonor we bring upon others, and that they cannot simply be ignored while claiming to be right with God. Forgiveness, restitution, humility, and reconciliation are necessary parts of walking in love, because love works no ill to its neighbor and seeks peace wherever possible. We, as believers, need to examine whether we have wronged others, seek forgiveness where needed, forgive those who have trespassed against us, and live as new creatures who fear God, love others, and stop walking carelessly over the lives of people around them.

Music is not morally neutral, but has a powerful influence on the heart, mind, body, emotions, and character of those who hear it. According to Ephesians 5:10-11 believers must prove what is acceptable unto the Lord and have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, especially in the music used for worship. Godly music should be marked by order, melody, harmony, reverence, and spiritual purpose, while fleshly and worldly music appeals to the body, stirs carnal passions, and will lead the church away from holiness and truth. It is critical, in this late hour, to exercise careful discernment, especially in the house of God, so that music offered in worship honors the Lord rather than conforming to the spirit and appetites of the world.

The promise of answered prayer is not a blank check for selfish desires, but God's provision for those who remain in Christ and bear fruit for His glory. To abide in Christ is full surrender to the Lord Jesus, separation from the world, faithfulness to His Word, and a life that proves connection to Christ by abiding in Him and bearing lasting fruit.

    Why Music Matters

Music matters in the worship of God, because it has a real effect on the heart, mind, spirit, and character of those who hear it. The worship in God's house should be marked by order, unity, reverence, truth, and one sound of praise to the Lord, not by the disorder, emotionalism, worldliness, and entertainment spirit that has entered many churches through contemporary music. Not all music is appropriate or acceptable for worship, and we must judge both the words and the structure of the music by whether it honors Christ, promotes holiness - not just how it makes us feel. We must worship God in spirit and in truth, refuse to follow the current of this generation, and seek to honor the Lord with music that is holy, reverent, and pleasing in His sight. Worldly, fleshly music will not do, and is not acceptable to God.

"O Timothy!" This was Paul's earnest plea with the young man following in his footsteps. We need to hear that plea today as Paul crying out to each of us saying the same thing he said to Timothy. We must steadfastly hold onto the faith and the Word of God entrusted to us, and not yield to the seductive influence of worldly philosophies and false science. Salvation and the Word of God are immutable foundations that must not be compromised or altered by cultural shifts or deceptive teachings. Compare the contrast between the stability of biblical authority with the transient nature of modern media and societal trends, which often distract from eternal truths. Believers are called to prove all things, actively avoiding profane distractions and testing all things against Scripture to maintain their spiritual integrity. Remaining faithful to these core doctrines ensures survival in perilous times and honors God's unchanging character.

Murmuring, complaining, self-pity, and gloom hinder our testimony and discourage those around us, while a joyful spirit refreshes others and points them to Christ. True worship must be acceptable to God, rooted in spirit and truth, and separated from the sensual, worldly, and profane influences that appeal to the flesh rather than honor the Lord. Therefore, we must consider the true cost of leaving the old paths, hold fast to what has been delivered to us, and preserve for the next generation a reverent, holy, Bible-centered way that pleases God.

We learn that salvation is not earned by works, yet the grace of God that saves us also changes us, teaches us to deny ungodliness, and to live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world. Therefore, we must look to the real Jesus of the Bible, give ourselves wholly to Him, walk in His light, and let His love loosen the hold this world has on our hearts.

We learn that depression gains power when we lose sight of God, allow our thoughts to become self-centered and negative, and listen to the devil's lies instead of the truth of God's Word. Jesus said, "not my will, but thine be done," and we must likewise surrender our heart, mind, and will to the Lord, trusting His Truth above our feelings, excuses, and self-deception. We learn that the struggle within us is often between a heart that wants its own way and a mind that knows the truth, and if we follow our heart instead of yielding to God, it will result in guilt, fear, bondage, and destruction. Unbelief is a matter of the heart – not the mind. The warmth is gone and there is lukewarmness, at the best. We must recognize that iniquity is basically lawlessness, which is the result of pride, rebellion, and unbridled selfishness, and that when INQUITY is prevailing it will destroy the trust, respect, and humility that real love requires. If we truly belong to God, we cannot let the iniquity of this age keep us from loving God and loving others. We must love God and others with sincere, fervent, unfeigned love. Our love for our family, our church, and the people around us should not depend on how they treat us, but should reflect the love of God shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost. What does it really mean to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ? The key word that runs through this chapter is believe — used seven times — because believing is the key that connects every promise Jesus makes to us. Now, believing isn't just accepting the historical facts about Jesus; it's a change that takes place in the deepest part of you, where Christ becomes what your life is about and makes you into a new creature. That comes about through the new birth. Jesus said, "...he that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also..." — and that word is shall, not will — meaning it's not optional or something you decide to do after you're saved; it's what becomes your nature when Christ is in you. He also promised that even after going to the Father, he would still be present with us, still working, and that "...if ye shall ask anything in my name, I will do it." But that promise is conditioned on our walking in his steps, keeping his commandments out of love, and living as his representatives in this world. The only way to really know what Jesus is like and examine whether you're truly like him, is to read and study the Word of God — particularly the Gospels — and let the Spirit of God bear witness with your spirit that you are truly his - or not.

Earthly hopes in people, family, church, or circumstances often disappoint, but the believer's true hope must be anchored in God, not in this world. We have many good examples to look to from the Word of God to help us in this struggle to hold onto hope. Faith in God and love for others restores hope, while self-pity and despair come from looking too low, and forgetting about God. The message emphasizes the cost and sacrifice behind preserving and translating the Bible, highlights doctrinal differences between the Roman Church and Bible-believers (such as "repentance" versus "penance") and emphasizes that the issue is about final authority—whether people will submit to a preserved, unchanging Word of God or treat Scripture as something flexible and subject to personal choice.

This message traces how groups such as the Albigensians and Waldensians, along with reformers like John Wycliffe, Jan Hus, and Martin Luther, and many others challenged church authority by teaching that the Bible—not church leaders—was the final authority. These faithful men and their followers were persecuted or killed, mostly by being burned at the stake, yet their efforts to translate and spread the Scriptures in the English language eventually helped spark the Protestant Reformation, aided by the printing press of Johannes Gutenberg. The lesson is meant to give a basic history of the Scriptures and emphasize the importance and authority of the Bible.

Ecclesiastes 1:18—"in much wisdom is much grief." People begin life in innocence and joy, like children who trust others and find wonder in simple things. But as people grow older and gain knowledge of the world's sin and hypocrisy, they become more and more cynical, critical, and unhappy, focusing only on what is wrong with others and with life. This kind of "wisdom" can fill the heart with pride, bitterness, and misery, especially in a world where knowledge and information constantly increase. Instead of letting evil and negativity consume the mind, believers must seek the wisdom that comes from God, which is pure, peaceable, gentle, and full of mercy. God intends for people to enjoy the simple blessings of life—family, work, fellowship, and daily provisions. True wisdom allows a person to recognize the evil in the world without becoming bitter, and to live with joy, gratitude, and trust in God.

    The Eternal Word of God

A righteous and holy God would not leave mankind without a clear and preserved revelation of Himself. From creation to the present, God's Word has existed, and Scripture promises that His pure words would be preserved forever (Psalm 12; 1 Peter 1). Therefore, believers can be confident that the true Word of God still exists today. The King James Bible is that preserved Word for the English-speaking people—tried, proven, historically rooted, and used by God to shape nations and fuel revival. This multitude of modern versions creates confusion, undermines authority, and weakens certainty about salvation and truth. The real issue is authority: without a sure Word from God, faith has no firm foundation. Believers must study the history of the Bible for themselves, settle the matter in their hearts, and stand in awe of God's Word—believing it, defending it, and obeying it as the final authority for life and eternity.

Jesus is not just "the life" in doctrine—He must be our life personally (John 14:6). Just as God breathed physical life into Adam, spiritual life comes only when Christ gives life to the soul. Without Him, a person may be religious, moral, or successful, but is still spiritually dead. Church attendance, denominational loyalty, knowledge of Scripture, or good works cannot save. Only a real, personal relationship with Jesus—through surrender and faith—brings eternal life. When Jesus truly is our life, it shows: we begin to think like Him, love like Him, live with conviction, and seek to honor Him above all else. The message is simple and urgent: Don't settle for religion. Know Christ Himself, and let Him be your life.

    The Mystery of Iniquity

2 Thessalonians 2:7–12 warns that the "mystery of iniquity" is the growing power of deception in the world. When people reject the truth of God's Word, God allows them to believe lies, because man has a free will to chose good or evil. The real mystery is how intelligent people can call evil good and good evil—but it happens when they refuse to love the truth. Throughout history people have justified great evil while believing they were right. The root problem is abandoning God's authority and replacing it with human opinion. Without the Bible as the final authority, morality collapses and society drifts into confusion and delusion. The only safeguard is a personal return to God—loving His truth, living by His Word, and refusing to be shaped by the lies of the age.

Many people try to have religion - church attendance, moral living, or even biblical knowledge without truly knowing Christ. But without Him, it is all empty—like artificial flowers that look real but have no life. Dead religion, emotional religion, or intellectual religion cannot give life. Only Jesus can. The message stresses that we must seek Christ Himself first—not merely the way or the truth as ideas. When a person bows before Him in faith and surrender, the way becomes clear and the truth becomes understandable. Eternal life is found in knowing Him personally, through the Word of God. Anything short of giving Him the supreme place in our lives leaves us in confusion and spiritual death.

    God Is Faithful

That God is faithful is a common theme throughout the Bible There is a great contrast between God's perfect faithfulness and human inconsistency, showing that while people often fail—through weakness, forgetfulness, or lack of love—God never fails. He keeps His promises, gives counsel, forgives sin, shows mercy, protects His people, and never forsakes them. Faithfulness is more than occasional good deeds or keeping rules out of duty. True faithfulness flows from love. God is faithful because He is love, and if we truly love Him, we will respond with steady, wholehearted faithfulness in return. God has never failed us, so how can we ever justify being unfaithful to Him?

Human reasoning, religion, philosophy, and even biblical knowledge alone cannot bring saving faith. People can know facts, organize doctrines into systematic theology, and even perform religious works, yet still be spiritually lost. Truth is not a system to be assembled — it is a Person. Jesus is not just a teacher or prophet but God incarnate, the exact image of the Father, who humbled Himself to become a man in order to bridge the gap between sinful humanity and a holy God. This calls for complete surrender: forsaking personal opinions and beliefs, pride, and self-made religion in order to truly know Christ. Salvation comes not from intellectual agreement with known facts, but from yielding to Jesus Christ as Lord and King. In the end, all we have, need, and claim is Jesus — and only by knowing Him can we know the truth and be made free.

We should apply to ourselves the words of Jesus to Peter in John 21:22 "What is that to thee? Follow thou me." We need to stop worrying about what others are doing — their faults, failures, faithfulness, or hypocrisy — and instead focus on our own walk with God. People will disappoint, churches will never be perfect, and this world will always be fallen, but none of that excuses us from obeying God. What will matter in eternity is how faithfully we walked with the Lord, not how much time we spent judging, fretting over, or trying to control others. The call is to live joyfully, trust God with other people, love even enemies, and keep our eyes on Christ.

    Enduring Temptation

Temptation is more than the pull toward sin; it includes trials, afflictions, and persecutions that test whether our faith is genuine. Every temptation asks the same question: will we trust God and remain faithful, or will we turn aside for relief or an easier way? God never tempts anyone to do evil, but He allows trials while the devil uses lies to deceive and destroy. Temptation always involves deception, offering promises that never deliver. Enduring temptation is possible because God provides a way of escape, and those who endure are strengthened, proven in their love for God, and promised the crown of life. Victory comes by taking temptation seriously, maintaining godly boundaries, and staying anchored in the Word of God.

God is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think. In times of discouragement, spiritual darkness, personal trials, and cultural decline, believers often lose heart because they lose sight of who God is. By considering God's infinite power revealed in creation, Scripture, and His dealings with His people, we are called to stop relying on our own strength and plans and to trust Him fully. God's work is never limited by our circumstances, failures, or imaginations. He is able to save to the uttermost, sustain the weary, defend His people, and finish what He has begun. Therefore, we are exhorted not to despair, not to give up on lost loved ones, not to grow weary in well-doing, but to keep our eyes fixed on the Lord who never fails.

The Bible is clear that Jesus is the only way to God, but that way is a holy, obedient way, not merely a belief or profession of faith. While most all professing Christians can agree on and accept the fact that Jesus forgives past sins, the real issue—and the great dividing line—is how a person deals with present, ongoing sin. It is our present sin over which theologians put a fork in the road. Scripture makes clear that those who are truly born again do not live in habitual, continual sin, because Christ came to destroy the works of the devil and to change lives now, not just someday in the by-and-by. Salvation is not just forgiveness of past sins, but a new life marked by repentance, obedience, and righteousness. True faith produces a changed heart and a changed direction.

Seducing Spirits and Doctrines of Devils

The greatest danger in the last days is not violence, fear, or world events, but spiritual deception. Scripture teaches that many will depart from the faith by listening to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils. Jesus warned us repeatedly about the danger of being deceived in the last days. The constant exposure to the world's ideas, voices, and "knowledge" leads to confusion, fear, and spiritual decline. Deception often works through guile—truth mixed with error—which makes it especially dangerous. That's how the serpent deceived Eve. He didn't deny God outright—he questioned, reframed, and let her draw the wrong conclusion. In the end, guile doesn't shout. It whispers. And by the time you realize where it's led you, your thinking has already shifted. The only safeguard against deception is wholehearted devotion to Christ, disciplined separation from corrupt influences, and a faithful commitment to seeking truth from God alone. Christ must remain the sole authority over the believer's mind and heart.
