When Tracy K. Smith was named U.S. Poet Laureate in 2017, the country was in a fragile place. In her new book, Smith writes that, by then, “we'd come to find ourselves in a climate of language — I'd call it a national vocabulary — grounded in fear, derision, and the notion of an intractably divided nation.”But Smith believes that poetry rises above the grim jargon. In “Fear Less: Poetry in Perilous Times,” she describes poetry as a vehicle equipped to transport us beyond facts and figures to places where we may not even know we want or need to go. Smith joins Kerri Miller on this week's Big Books and Bold Ideas to explore how poetry is uniquely positioned to transform our understanding of each other. Along the way, they trade favorite poems, talk about why it's crucial that poetry be read out loud and discuss ways to make poetry more approachable — especially for those who only learned to diagram it in school. Guest: Tracy K. Smith is the Boylston Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory at Harvard University. She served as the 22nd Poet Laureate of the United States and is the author of five poetry collections, including the Pulitzer Prize–winning “Life on Mars.” Her newest book is “Fear Less: Poetry in Perilous Times.” Subscribe to the Thread newsletter for the latest book and author news and must-read recommendations.Subscribe to Big Books and Bold Ideas with Kerri Miller on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, RSS or anywhere you get your podcasts.
What To Do In Perilous Times - Sunday Morning 02-08-26
Send us a textGUEST: Guest: Jan Markell, founder and president, Olive Tree MinistriesIn some of his final words, the apostle Paul wrote to the younger pastor Timothy saying, “But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come” (2 Timothy 3:1).Paul then described what men will be like in these perilous times: “For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!” (2 Timothy 3:2-5).The “last days” in Scripture is the period of time between the first coming and second coming of Christ. But reading the book of Revelation, the ungodliness intensifies in the last of the last days. While there is certainly room to descend further, what we are seeing today, for example in Minneapolis with protestors taking to the streets day after day to scream obscenities at officers and block them from arresting criminals and illegal immigrants, and then entering and disrupting Cities Church in St. Paul this past Sunday, claiming to be like Christ cleansing the temple, as they yelled and shamed churchgoers for “doing nothing to help their immigrant neighbors” could aptly be described as “perilous times.” All this lawlessness has the support or sympathy of state leaders. But it's not just in my home state of Minnesota. There is massive deception and delusion across the country and world rebelling against God and His ways and ranting against Israel, even within the church. Our guest this weekend, Jan Markell, has watched it all over her lifetime. The daughter of an orthodox Jewish father, Jan was changed forever when she heard and believed the gospel as a young girl. She would go on to found Olive Tree Ministries, a ministry that for decades has exhorted the church, through her radio program heard across the country and world called Understanding the Times, conferences, and written and video resources, to be faithful and discerning and to look for to the return of Christ and God fulfilling His promises to Israel.
Send us a textA quiet milestone turns into a bold charge: if the heart is the wellspring of our words and choices, then the real battle is not cosmetic but core. We walk through Ecclesiastes 8 and 2 Peter 3 to confront a hard truth—when judgment doesn't come quickly, we often mistake God's patience for approval—and then we flip that lie on its head with the better truth of grace. God's forbearance is not indifference. It is a window for repentance, a daily sermon through breath, beauty, and borrowed time.We talk candidly about why “I'm dealing with it” can be a subtle form of unbelief, a way to manage appearances rather than receive a new heart. Christ purchased more than survival; he purchased joy, victory, peace, and freedom from the inner war we can never win alone. The church's response to rejection and misrepresentation is not retreat but resilience: deeper unity, fervent prayer, simple obedience, and the steady fruit of the Spirit. If Jesus knew what was in man and still set his face toward the cross, then we can face dark days with bright hope.Along the way, we answer the scoffer's question about promises and time. The same word that formed the world will finish history. It may feel like any other day, until it isn't. That urgency drives a personal invitation: return to the God who is longsuffering toward you, lay down the struggle you've glorified, and step into the abundant life Christ secured. If this message moves you, share it with someone who needs hope today, subscribe for more, and leave a review to help others find the show. What part stirred your heart most? We'd love to hear. A secure, senseless state is the certain prediction of approaching ruin. Know this, brethren, please know this, I beg of you, for your and my own soul, that you will be aware of, and affected by, the perils of the season into which we are cast. What they are, if God helps me, and gives me a little strength, I will show you shortly.
Tonight, we look back to last week's message on Israel and ask the question: How did we get here? Why are things so messed up, and how can we overcome this day and age?
Pastor John preaches on the ungodliness of the last days from II Timothy 3.

Like never before we need to understand Bible prophecy! Christine Darg delves into the role of Israel in God's redemptive plan. In this episode, Dr. Nathaniel Wilson reflects on Paul's warning that “in the last days perilous times shall come.” He addresses the challenges of lawlessness, government control, and the moral decay entering homes through media and culture. Drawing a vivid contrast between Sarah's inner beauty and Jezebel's artificial beauty, Dr. Nathaniel Wilson explains how holiness is not just outward appearance but the inward glory of Christ shining through His people in these end times.
On this episode of Uncommon Sense with Ginny Robinson, we confront the horrific attack at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis. The shooter, Robert “Robin” Westman, once walked those same halls as a student. Years of unchecked mental illness and spiritual rebellion ended in bloodshed.America is in denial. We refuse to face the truth: the transgender movement is built on a Satanic lie. No one can change the sex God gave them. Pretending otherwise doesn't heal broken souls, it destroys them and puts others in danger.Christians must speak plainly. Love does not mean affirming sin or confusion. Love means pointing people back to Christ, who alone gives us our identity. Until our nation repents and turns back to God, tragedies like this will only increase.Pray for the victims and their families.--https://policecoffee.com/collections/coffee
II Timothy: Living in Perilous Times
Last week we talked about how Jesus described the times of the end of the age where events will take place. This week we go over how Paul describes the condition of man in the last days. We have been in the last days since Christ's ascension, but perilous times happen when the the condition of man grows worse. We are seeing the hearts of man played out right before our eyes as Paul described in 2 Timothy 3. Even though man may get selfish we as the church must remain in love.1 Timothy 4, 2 Timothy 3, Acts 20
