Brewers Association CEO Bart Watson on the State of the Craft Beer

Brewers Association (BA) president and CEO Bart Watson entered the Brewbound Podcast studio last week fresh off stage from giving his State of the Industry speech at the 2025 Craft Brewers Conference (CBC).   Watson discussed key takeaways from his speech, including why the 4% volume decline for craft last year wasn't everyone's experience, as 43% of craft breweries found growth last year.   “You can have a number where yes, the middle it is negative, but there's still lots of people on the positive side,” Watson explained during a conversation with Brewbound's Jess Infante and Justin Kendall on the Brewbound Podcast.   Watson also discussed why the growing number of closures has hit the long-tail of craft breweries – those making fewer than 500 barrels of beer – the hardest.    “Running a small business is hard,” Watson said. “They're just on the smallest line of, ‘OK, the landlord changes the rent when our lease is up.' … Main Street gets torn up because the city is doing construction. It disrupts our traffic.'    “A 2,000-barrel brewery is going to have resources and options to weather that; a 500-barrel brewery might not,” he continued. “Those are members that we're trying to think about how we help, how we drive foot traffic and what we can do to improve their conditions.”   The conversation touches on several topics, including: How the BA is advocating for its members with the Trump administration in Washington, D.C., and why it's important for brewery owners to connect with lawmakers; Why full-strength spirits are being added to the Great American Beer Festival and how that's manifesting in a way to support BA members; Whether the event could move away from Denver in the future;  Why there is a perception versus reality issue with consumers when it comes to the flavors that craft offers beyond IPA; And his overall read on the vibe of CBC. Ahead of the interview, the Brewbound team also discusses recent headlines, including Rhinegeist's NA beer venture and Tilray CEO Irwin Simon's honest thoughts on the company's stock price. Plus, the team plays Another Round or Tabbing Out on the commercialization of B.O.R.G.s, and Zoe dishes on her motorsport adventures.

This special business-focused edition of the podcast is brought to you interruption-free by the transformational beverage-industry technologists at Encompass (https://www.encompasstech.com). As we head into 2024, the brewing industry is facing serious headwinds that have limited growth for many breweries and accelerated the closure of others. Consumer patterns are changing, product preferences continue to evolve, drinking occasions shift as our rhythms of work and life find different beats, and the playbook on which many businesses relied on no longer produces the same results. However, necessity has always been the mother of invention for craft brewers, and today's challenges feel a bit familiar to those who experienced a similar contraction in the late '90s or massive price increases due to the hop shortage of the late '00s. To explore how brewers are facing these challenges head-on today—and working to “future-proof” their breweries—we tapped three industry pros to share their viewpoints—Patrick Tickle, CEO of Encompass (https://www.encompasstech.com), Cole Hackbarth, VP of brewing operations for Cincinnati's Rhinegeist (https://rhinegeist.com), and Dave Thibodeau, president and cofounder of Ska Brewing (https://www.skabrewing.com) in Durango, Colorado. Through the conversation, they discuss: major challenges for breweries today, such as increasing COGS, lower consumer-pricing thresholds, and the diminishing returns from innovation strategizing around today's generational shift in drinkers developing organic and authentic innovation within the beer space differences between craft beer and flavored malt beverage (FMB) consumers focusing innovation around brand strengths rather than untested categories supporting innovation while maintaining profitability through blended margins the increasing impact of cash flow on business decision making changing hospitality habits developed by customers during the pandemic managing labor costs through cross-training and active owner-operators And more. This special industry spotlight episode is brought to you by Encompass The Encompass (https://www.encompasstech.com) digital platform is designed to connect everyone across the supply chain, from producers to distributors and retailers, so that you have clear real-time visibility into your brewing business with powerful analytics to support your decision making. Renfield is a delightful little horror comedy chronicling the titular character's toxic relationship with his master, Count Dracula. Featuring Nicholas Hoult as Renfield and Nicolas Cage as that overbearing boss, it's a film that works despite its own confusion on what it wants to be. Cage is phenomenal as Dracula and Hoult is charming as the nebbish Renfield. Their interplay almost universally hits. The other identity of the film is a smattering of over-the-top action and balletic gore. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed that, too. I just wish there was more of the former. Why? Well, quite simply, Cage is the principal reason to watch Renfield. He is just so damn zany and fun. The fact that he disappears for large sections of the movie as Renfield makes googly eyes at a cop named Rebecca (Awkwafina) hurts the driving narrative of the film. We're here to see Dracula gaslight and manipulate Renfield, so give it to us. Anyway, as I said, this movie is mostly a good time. That sadly did not translate to box office success. On a budget of $65 million, it grossed a putrid $26.7 million. But with decent fan reactions (79% favorability compared to the 58% of critics), Renfield does at least seem destined for semi-cult status.  Now, sit back, suck the flavor from Rhinegeist's Franz, and don't make it a sexual thing! One such beer is Rhinegiest Hustle, an 6% IPA with notes of citrus, peach, tangerine, and mango. In keeping with the baseball talk, we chat about how MLB teams are extending beer sales longer due to the new pitch clock shortening games. We also talk about a famous Kentucky priest releasing an extremely rare barrel pick from Willett, and how two bottles are already reserved for the pope and Shaq. We also try to decide if we can think of two more famous people than those two.We also debut the new hit game show “bourbon or baby food” where David reads a description and Gary tries to decide if it describes bourbon (or whiskey) or baby food.Happy Dad Seltzer has 1 gram of sugar, 100 calories, and is gluten-free.Use our code “BeersBeards10” for 10% off at Rivalry Brews  Support us and get a free trial of Amazon Music by heading over to their website.Check out our full list of Craft Beer Reviews and Bourbon Reviews on our website. This film showcases a former 80's professional wrestling star coming to terms with his age, health, and broken relationships. We get into how it portrays the backstage inner-workings of sports entertainment, our own relationships with WWE/WWF (+ mentions of ROH, CZW, AEW, etc.), deathmatch wrestling veering too deep into misery porn/Oscar-bait, Black Swan and Requiem for a Dream, distasteful nudity (and seeing Aunt May naked), and several other topics. Anyways, it feels good to pick things back up with a discussion on the filmography of Christopher Nolan, the sci-fi/drama director who specializes in time abstraction and high-end concepts, and we rank his films to see how they stack up against each other. His debut film 'Following' was left out of this list as it barely reaches an hour in length and is largely considered a student film. Gary tries something other than bourbon this week, as a listener was kind enough to provide him with some TX Blended Whiskey after he blind tasted TX Bourbon on Episode 118.Deschutes Black Butte Non-Alcoholic is one of the highest rated NA beers on Untappd, and David said that you know it's good if Deschutes is putting the name and reputation of their highest-selling beer on the label. It's a dark pour and holds up well to the original, which David tried on the show during Flagship February last year.TX Blended Whiskey has notes of vanilla, pear, and is slightly sweet on the nose. The palate is honey butter, banana, and caramel, and the finish is long and smooth with no burn. It won best American craft whiskey at the San Francisco World Sprits Competition in 2013.We also chat about this being a big weekend in the NFL with both of our teams having a shot to square off in the Super Bowl. Speaking of the Super Bowl, Anheuser-Busch is switching up its advertising plan this year, with commercials coming for Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, and Busch Light. In Grand Rapids he visited the New Holland Knickerbocker location, where he purchased some barrel-aged Dragon's Share Seltzer. BEERS (11:42) : Our Cincinnati journey continues! For our next stop, we hit a local (and even national) favorite in Rhinegeist Brewery. Located in the historic Over-The-Rhine district, Rhinegeist's home was a pre-prohibition bottling plant, and has since evolved into a beer brand loved by Ohioans across the state. Assistant GM Aislinn Brown and Director of Education Chris Shields sit down with us over a few pints of Rhinegeist beer. We discuss the role that Cincinnati played during prohibition and the German influence on the taproom & beer style. We also try Rhinegeist's flagship IPA, Truth, which made the list of top 100 beers in the world in 2014. BUSINESS (41:34): Bradley Adams and Ali Bozzutto found a real problem upon which they built Aerogami - the accessibility of information. Picture this: you get into a small fender-bender, and you exchange information with the other party. But there's only one problem; since you have your insurance policy information on the app, and you're in an area with no service, you don't know your policy number! Aerogami's products aim to solve many different challenges in a “no-code” fashion - from travel and insurance to public safety. We chat with Bradley and Ali at the Founders & Friends event at Long Live Beerworks in Providence, RI. BALLS (Presented by MANSCAPED): The Final Four…er, the Blue Bloods Classic…has arrived! Kansas, Duke, Villanova, and North Carolina are the last teams standing in a year that's featured more mayhem than recent seasons. Friendly bets have become popular under the backdrop of the Super Bowl. Mayors of cities that host game-bound teams engage in banter designed to boost tourism, friends take on each other, and small businesses go toe to toe and show off team pride.  Breweries are no different. This year as the Cincinnati Bengals take on the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California we welcome on three breweries engaged in such a bet.  The terms of the bet weren't firmed up before recording this show and slowly get hashed out, if not completely resolved by the end. Spoiler alert: there will be costumes.  On the show this week, joining via zoom from their respective breweries are Lynne Weaver, the founder and owner of Three Weavers, a brewery in Inglewood, that, as you'll hear, was briefly part of Canarchy, the brewery group recently purchased by Monster Beverages. She brought the company back to independence before that deal was closed.  She's joined by her brewery neighbor Teo Hunter, a co-founder of Crowns and Hops, a brewery that started on social media, gained a grass roots following and has been working hard to bring change to the beer industry through action. And representing Cincinnati is Matthew Steinke the director of sales at Rhinegeist Brewing, one of the state's larger breweries and a source of local beer pride. There are barbs and jabs thrown throughout this show, and they wind up steering the topics, and sharing experiences. We start off with the run up to the game, and Inglewood, which is hosting the game for the biggest night in American sports.  Editor's note: An earlier version of this episode misidentified the Ohio team playing in the Super Bowl. The game-bound team is the Cincinnati Bengals not the Cleveland Browns.
