In this week's episode of Matt Likes Beer, Matt reviews Climate Control Pale Ale from Bronx Brewery—a beer so elusive it doesn't even appear on the brewery's own website! With little to no reviews available, Matt takes on the challenge of dissecting this small-run brew, exploring its bold balance of malt and hops. With notes of resin, caramel, and a solid citrus backbone, this pale ale surprises Matt with how well it holds up, earning an impressive 43 out of 50 in his BJCP-style evaluation. Along the way, he reflects on why pale ales are the ultimate test of a brewery's skill, shares his personal philosophy on rating breweries, and tells the wild story of how his own pale ale unexpectedly won multiple best-of-show medals. This episode is missing one thing—one-star reviews! Since Climate Control lacks enough public feedback, Matt instead fills the time with entertaining beer talk, deep dives into brewing balance, and a few rants about the quirks of online reviews. Listen now on Neozaz.com, BigMonsterBrewing.com, or your favorite podcast platform. If you're a fan of pale ales, hidden beer gems, or just a good craft beer story, this is an episode you won't want to miss!

Jason Hernandez is a lifelong artist, but he has taken a turn with his art, from paintings to furniture. Hernandez and his wife, Becky, moved to Beacon from Brooklyn just before the March 2020 pandemic shutdown. He had just signed a lease on a space for his studio, Hendo (hendomade.com) when the world closed. Hernandez got to work. He built furniture "as if I was about to get orders." The process helped him "understand the physical world a little more." He did custom work for architects and designers and created pieces for The Bronx Brewery and Hyperbolic Audio, among other clients. Initially, Hernandez pursued painting, especially murals and signs. But he says that his passion for it began to dwindle. He turned to welding, taking classes at the School of Visual Arts. A wren dresser Shaker-style side table Curved stool A white oak lobby bench created with Peter Hosier (Photos provided) The a-ha moment came when he made a coffee table; he later learned that his late grandfather had been a cabinet maker in Spain. Lately, Hernadez says, he's been tempted to paint again. "Now that there's no pressure in feeling like I need to do it to be an artist," he says. "I can just do it for pleasure."

While Matt Batten aspired to be a pro baseball player, many were still shocked to see him make his MLB debut in the summer of 2022. Now two years in to his MLB service, Batten put together a strong finish to his 2023 campaign as a utility infielder for the San Diego Padres. Matt joins the show to take us through his journey of youth baseball to the pros - from repping Shelton, Connecticut in the 2008 Little League World Series, to setting the all-time hits record at Quinnipiac University. We discuss the grind of the minor leagues, playing for 7 different MiLB teams through 7 seasons, and finally earning the call to the bigs. We also discuss some of the advice and lessons learned from his teammates Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts, and Juan Soto. In a little reverse action today, we start with the Balls segment, discussing all the crazy times in the football world with both the Patriots and the Giants on the struggle bus. Are the Giants better off for winning the games they have in recent weeks? Are the Patriots going to have any glimmer of hope for the future as the tank continues to manifest? We discuss the ESPN Bet initiative coming to life and what it could mean for journalism. Meanwhile, in business, Tree House Brewing Company is under major fire after a minority shareholder sued the two founders; how will this affect their product and their lovable nature? Jake reviews Smile My Guy by Bronx Brewery, and Will reviews Lion's Fountain Pilsner from the best college bar on the face of the earth in Florence, Italy. What does a banana taste like? I want you to take a moment to consider it, whether you like them or not. As you think about unpeeling the fruit and taking a first bite, do you imagine something sweet? Maybe the texture is mushy. Is there a scene playing out in your mind? I promise this question isn't for nothing, and in this conversation, you'll eventually hear how one skilled brewer thinks about eating a banana he can only find in memory. Get ready to meet Rafael D'Armas, who came to homebrewing and the beer industry through a career that started in political science and international relations. Originally from Venezuela, you'll hear how politics, history, and culture shaped his early assumptions of what he wanted to do for work, and then how a friend and some beer changed his mind. Rafael started in beer at New York City's Bronx Brewery through an internship program made possible with Beer Kulture, a nonprofit working to foster a more inclusive beer industry, and is currently a brewer at Montclair Brewery in New Jersey. This fall, it was announced he received the Michael Jackson Foundation's Sir Geoff Palmer Award for Brewing to attend the prestigious Siebel Institute of Technology, which has trained generations of some of the best brewers in the world. But all that is just background for the person you'll come to understand Rafael to be as we talk about his home country, what it was like trading political science research for beer, what “innovation” means when it's made personal … and bananas, of course. This is a chance to get to know an up-and-coming brewer who has unique and deep ideas of what beer can be, and how he wants to be a part of change.

We got two Swedish beer or not as Martin discovers. Television Brewing is a nanobrewery from Stockholm. They have only released five beers so far. Helihopper is an English IPA. Bronx Brewery is a microbrewery from the Bronx and not the Stockholm area as Martin thought. It's in the name so we're all a little surprised. Boogie Down Winter is an American pale ale coming in at 6.3% ABV. Bronx Brewery has released over 200 beers. They are little more seasoned.

This week's featured artist is S.Y. Espinal. We came to learn of her creativity and calling through the label collaboration with Bronx Brewery. When breweries promote and celebrate art and people it creates a positive experience that resonates with me and makes me want to learn more about all parties. We caught SYE on an IG Live with the brewery and knew that she would make a great guest. The episode is a great honest reflection of self and how we live our lives. We don't have all the answers and putting ourselves out there as artists can be a lot for many. Her story is inspiring, honest and real. This project is really a catalyst to promote and support amazing humans from all around the world and tell their story. Each guest controls the narrative and allows it to go in a multitude of directions, so when someone like SYE opens themselves up as she does with her story and her art it is an opportunity to have a shared experience and perspective. With pride, she has built a community of folks who support each other and have added an additional layer to her message. Doing what's right and being a good person is part of the universe that she is sharing with all of us. Her passion and fight is strong. It includes compiling a list of black-owned restaurants and industry location in the 5 Boroughs (over 250+) to support as a dynamic living public document is just one example. I felt an energy and don't take the connections and perspective for granted. In a time that can be so draining and taxing on all of us (myself at times x 100), it is great and welcome to have genuine connections with strangers and share a moment. Almost all of the guests on the podcast are people I have never spoken to in person. Each interaction other than a short warm-up and a few emails is a shared moment of sharing, listening and learning. I look forward to sharing it with all of you.
