SNL celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2025 but we didn't start watching it until the 1990s. As Canadian kids with bedtimes in the 80s, we had more exposure to SCTV, the incredible sketch comedy show that featured an outrageously talented cast from Second City. Andrea Martin, Catherine O'Hara, Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Dave Thomas, John Candy and Harold Ramis and later Rick Moranis and Martin Short on one show! In this episode, we reminisce with our good friend, Marcus J, and revisit our favourite movies featuring SCTV alumni. It's a beauty, eh!

It is a privilege to welcome author and content creator Marcus J. Anthony to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. It is also an honor that he is making his podcasting debut on my platform. Marcus J. Anthony, an upcoming author from Dublin, Ireland, published the previous version of Love of Sacrifice before rebooting it into The World of Antheric. Some who have known Marcus from school found the news of his book a surprise, as Marcus struggled through school dealing with dyslexia and social anxiety. Marcus lacked focus in his studies and would spend most of his time daydreaming about flying on dragons or waving a wand to cast a spell. Fantasy fueled Marcus's mind. However, it caused him to fall behind in school. He would be exempt from Irish language studies, which was disheartening for him not to be able to translate his countries original language. When Marcus was ten, he suffered from sleep anxiety. So, he decided to use his strong imagination to create 'movies' in his head that would help him sleep. That was when some of the characters in this novel were created. In the years that followed, the movies in his head developed and became a magical world that Marcus could not resist writing. Creative writing became his passion, and Marcus would not allow his dyslexia to stop him from achieving. He spent most of his teenage years (staying home on weekends) writing and learning until he found his writing style. Marcus has a great love for animals and supports charities. He is vocal about the awareness of animal abuse, expressed in the story through Jenin's past experiences. Marcus has four cats: Summer, Junior, Littler, and Leia. In 2017, Marcus fell into a dark spell of generalized anxiety and depression, which delayed the release of his book. The Black Grawth came from his experience with anxiety and panic attacks. And Gaul - the Dark Lord- represented the darkness of depression. With the help of treatment, family, and meditation, Marcus found strength and happiness again and continues to write with the world around him as his inspiration. He is also known as Elite MJ on YouTube and in the content creator community. His original story, Pokémon: The Next Generation, has gained a massive fan following. The story takes place ten years after longtime series protagonist Ash Ketchum captured the World Championship title.  After a devasting Pokémon war, Johto resident Marc Masters begins his journey with his friends, Rachel and Anthony, in Kanto. As the story unfolds, Ash and Pikachu are kidnapped, and a menacing and monstrous new antagonist, MewZ, emerges from the shadows, ready to take over the world.  On this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Marcus J. Anthony spoke about how he got into storytelling, creating MewZ, and previewing what's to come on the Pokémon: the Next Generation web series.Let's connect on social media: A) BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/jacobelyachar.bsky.socialB) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JacobElyachar/C) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jacobelyachar/D) Threads: https://www.threads.net/@jacobelyacharE) Twitter (X): https://x.com/JacobElyacharF) YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@JacobElyacharBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/jake-s-take-with-jacob-elyachar--4112003/support.

Slam the Gavel welcomes Marcus Echols. He has over 35 years experience dealing with DHR/Family Court system. He has appeared on TV, newspaper articles and online radio over the years addressing this subject. He has forcefully challenged and shined a bright light on some of the most horrid cases of DHR/CPS abuse against Non Custodial parents in Alabama. Politicians have to see this from a human perspective and not a financial perspective. Once they see you as a money maker for them, your life and what happens to you does not matter. The tactics they use, Marcus wishes he should have known because they have caused so much damage to families for years to come through Parental Alienation as well as how terrible they treat the Non Custodial parents. Marcus encourages parents to understand the tactics DHS uses such as denying information for people to help themselves, not getting visitations in and false accusations so they can justify their treatment of a Non Custodial Parent. These are some of the tactics DHR uses. DHR uses these tactics and their goal is to drive a parent into the ground financially and emotionally where a parent cannot even begin to fight back. DHS makes money for the Court House. The discussion went to what really happened to the stimulus checks. When DHR took this money, did they get matching funding? Are the judges receiving money from the incentives on top of their salaries? The taxpayer should be aware that Social Security is being robbed by CPS and Title IV-D. Marcus explained his journey through debtor's prison and his heart attack that nearly ended his life and how the guards treated him during this episode. Human Rights violations are committed every day in prisons. Just because a person is granted full custody doesn't make them the better parent. The courts just saw an opportunity. Psychcast host Lorenzo Norris, MD, talks with members of the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry’s Media Committee about how to help patients navigate the uncertainties associated with educating K-12 and college students during the pandemic. The discussion is moderated by Jack Drescher, MD. Dr. Norris is assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and assistant dean of student affairs at George Washington University in Washington. He also serves as medical director of psychiatric and behavioral sciences at George Washington University Hospital. Dr. Norris has no conflicts of interest. Dr. Drescher is clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University in New York, adjunct professor at New York University, and a training and supervising psychoanalyst at the William Alanson White Institute. He has no conflicts of interest.  Joining Dr. Norris and Dr. Drescher are Carol Bernstein, MD; Jeffrey Freedman, MD; Gail Saltz, MD; and Peter Kramer, MD. None of the guests have a conflict of interest. Summary Questions about school reopenings are fraught with uncertainty for children, parents, and teachers, with concerns for safety as well as the quality of the school experience. Constant communication between parents and schools with families is warranted; however, without a clear plan, too much communication can generate anxiety. The pandemic and school reopenings affect most sectors of society, including the economy, and vulnerable and elderly populations. The pandemic puts pressure on families because the distribution of work often is in the home. Women in particular are struggling with the ongoing need to manage work demands with those tied to their children’s school schedules. School reopening plans have ramifications for the workplace as parents struggle to meet their usual schedule and productivity standards. School reopening is another aspect of the pandemic that underscores class and financial disparities, because some school systems can afford widespread testing to keep children in school. These decisions, in turn, have a ripple effect on parents' ability to return to work. School reopenings also affect young adults at colleges and universities. The social milieu of college targets the development of young adults as they accomplish social and emotional milestones by interacting with peers. Yet, to reopen safely, colleges have been forced to change their structure and limit social interactions between students and faculty. In addition, college is a common time and place for mental illnesses to surface or be exacerbated in young people; it’s unclear whether there will be enough mental health services for this group, which is now under even more stress. Colleges are trying to fill the mental health gap by using adjunctive tools, such as apps, and broader telehealth and virtual psychotherapy services. Children at every age are facing developmental challenges, including a "failure to launch." Presently, 52% of young adults reside with one or both of their parents, the largest proportion since the Great Depression.   References Bushwick S. What separates photography and cinema from the previous visual mediums is their ability to take control of the eye, crafting a surrogate field of vision, the act of seeing through another's lens. Sacred Resistance A sermon preached by Rev. Ginger E. Gaines-Cirelli at Foundry UMC, March 25, 2018, Palm Sunday.   Text: Mark 11:1-11    It seems like a day that’s all about dramatic gestures.  A charged political march, an impending face-off with the ruling administration, dramatic symbols—donkey, palm branches, chanting crowds— carrying the message and the hope.  But it occurs to me that driving this scene we commemorate on Palm Sunday is something very simple: a commitment to do the right thing.  The grand gesture is only necessary because those with the power and influence won’t do the right thing.  The right thing takes so many forms—from legislation that shapes communal life for millions of people to small, everyday acts of kindness. But, as novelist Laura McBride writes, “It all matters.” She shares that little things like someone who “pays at the unattended lot…acknowledges help…wipes the counter…tips the maid…accepts the consequences…lends a hand…goes first, goes last, chooses the small portion, teaches the child, tends to the dying…removes the splinter, wipes the tear… touches the lonely, is the whole thing. What is most beautiful is least acknowledged. What is worth dying for is barely noticed.”[i]   In the face of so much fear, violence, chaos, injustice, and uncertainty in our lives and world, I’ve observed folks over the past year or so more intentionally naming the power of simple acts of intentional care and commitment, those things that often get taken for granted. Choosing to do the right thing, the generous thing, the thoughtful thing, the kind thing…choosing to do the loving and just thing with and for others, no matter whether the gesture is large or quite small—this, in our age of slander and spin and selfishness is sacred resistance.  To see otherwise unacknowledged beauty, to notice what is truly worth living and dying for, this is sacred resistance.   That is what Jesus is doing as he rides into Jerusalem. The beauty and suffering of the poor and oppressed weigh heavily on his mind and heart. His whole life has been spent seeing, noticing, caring, healing, touching, encouraging those with their backs against the wall, those with others’ boot upon their necks, those simply trying to survive. I imagine that Jesus could tell story after story of his encounters—the look on the face of Simon’s mother-in-law when the fever left her (Mk 1:30), the joy of the leprous man restored to health and who found his voice (Mk 1:42), the energy in the house when the one who’d been lowered in through the roof got up and walked out through the front door (Mk 2:12), that dinner party with Levi and his tax collecting buddies (Mk 2:15), the bleeding woman’s desperate faith that became part of her healing (Mk 5:34), the determined sass of the Syrophoenician woman who was willing to talk back and teach Jesus something for the sake of her child (Mk 7:28), the man who lived in the tombs whose transformation changed not only him but the entire community, Jairus and his daughter, Bartimaeus, the children brought to Jesus for blessing, the faces of the crowds who pressed upon him everywhere he went, hungering and thirsting for healing, for hope, for bread, for someone to see them and to extend any sign of encouragement.   These are the faces, names, and experiences that Jesus carries into Jerusalem on that day so long ago …beautiful and tragic stories of God’s beloved ones…those forgotten on the margins of society and those caught in the snares of privilege, pride, and power.  Jesus had the eyes to see, the ears to hear, the heart to understand the realities of this world that crush hope and leave people in desperate situations, to have compassion for those who respond to desperation by doing harm to themselves and others and for those who at least try to be just and kind even when no one is watching.  Jesus is determined to do the right thing by them all.    And the creature who carries Jesus into Jerusalem is no accident. A humble king riding the foal of a donkey is not only the fulfillment of a prophecy from Zechariah (9:9), it is a sign of solidarity with the simple, with the poor, with those who bear the burdens that make life possible for others. The donkey is, after all, a simple creature, often called a beast of burden.  It is clear from the text that Jesus planned how he would enter the city; I imagine that after the bystanders were told what was happening, word of mouth started to spread and the grassroots organizing kicked in to plan the march. The stuff of this march was what folks could bring from home…cloaks and cut branches…simple things of the people, by the people, and for the people…   Historical studies suggest that another march was taking place on the other side of Jerusalem on the day Jesus arrived.  A carefully planned, well-funded military parade, complete with pomp and circumstance, banners flying and shining armor, mounted golden eagles and weapons glinting in the sun.[ii]  No donkey here, but rather mighty warhorses streaming in procession. According to scholars, “Pilate’s military procession was a demonstration of both Roman imperial power and Roman imperial theology…it was the standard practice of the Roman governors of Judea to be in Jerusalem for the major Jewish festivals. They did so not out of empathetic reverence for the religious devotion of their Jewish subjects, but to be in the city in case there was trouble. There often was, especially at Passover, a festival that celebrated the Jewish people’s liberation from an earlier empire.”[iii]     If we think that empire exists only in the texts of the Bible, the annals of ancient history, the mind of George Lucas, or the drama of Lucious and Cookie Lyon, we are not paying attention.  Empire may change faces over the centuries, but its contours remain consistent: political oppression (ordinary people are manipulated and suppressed with little or no voice in shaping society) economic exploitation (systems and policies keep the wealth flowing to the wealthy) religious legitimation (religious leaders assert that the status quo reflects the will of God)[iv] When voting is suppressed and propaganda goes unchecked, there is political oppression; when legislation favors the rich and money buys votes there is economic exploitation; when religious leaders hypocritically support people and policies that sanction cruelty and oppression there is religious legitimation.   I have lived all 48 years of my life in this country I love, a country that against all its best aspirations has been consistently if not increasingly imperial.  This is not a politically partisan statement.  Some leaders across disciplines and industries and parties have tried to resist and reform.  Not all folks with privilege, wealth, and power are all intentionally oppressive and exploitative.  My assertion is that the overarching dynamics, values, and systems that have evolved through human choices across time and have created in our day—as of old—the need for a face-off with the ruling, privileged classes.  So we see the peaceful protest vs. the militarized show of force; the traumatized children vs. the radicalized gun lobby; we see Emma González bearing the burden of that trauma, standing before the whole world for 6 minutes of silence as if to say with the biblical prophet, “Look upon the one whom they have pierced” (Zech. 12:10, Jn 19:37); we see T.C. Morrow faithfully walking forward year after year and presenting her life and ministry to a church that continues to say “no”…we see the already iconic image of Ieshia Evans in Baton Rouge in the summer of 2016, calmly and proudly standing before a line of police in riot gear, her long dress gently blowing, her feet firmly planted, as two officers urgently approach as if afraid.  Across the ages, in this land and around the world, in one way or another, we see metaphorically the humble, burden-bearing donkey facing up to the powerful warhorse… We see the continued struggle between God’s kin-dom and earthly empire…   And out amid and beyond the crowds swarming at the dramatic events, we see those who are acting with kindness and generosity, who are doing the tasks that are literally “thankless,” who are being patient and present in the midst of flared passions and the misbehavior resulting from despair… If we are paying attention, we will see those unnamed, unsung public servants laboring in government and law enforcement who are trying to do the right thing; we’ll see teachers, school counselors and social workers trying to close the gaps of need, we’ll see journalists who keep at it even as others seek to discredit them, we’ll notice the ones who can’t turn out for the big, dramatic events because they can’t afford to take off work, the ones who bear the burdens of the tasks that make life bearable: trash collectors and those who clean the bathrooms (and all those port-a-potties!), food harvesters, packagers, and preparers, nurses and doctors and hospice staff, help desk staff and administrative assistants, and on and on it goes.   The dramatic face-off captured in iconic photos and unsung service by unnamed people are both sacred resistance insofar as those engaged seek to embody the way of God’s kin-dom.  That is our call—to stand for God’s way in the face of all that is not God’s way… To do that when others are looking and when no one but God sees.  We are called to see who and what is worth caring about, who and what is worth risking it all for.    That’s what Jesus does for us.  Jesus has been #saying her name, his name, your name and mine forever.  Jesus, long ago and today, sees the faces of all the children—those living and dead—and knows their story.     Today may seem like a day of dramatic gestures, but let’s be clear about what’s really going on.  Jesus doesn’t march into Jerusalem to call attention to himself or for the videos of the march to go viral.  Jesus rides into Jerusalem to say to those in power, “See Jairus’ daughter.  See Bartimaeus. See Jaelynn Willey and Nikolas Cruz, see Stephon Clark and his two young children. See the victims of gun violence in Newtown and the surviving students and families who carry scars. The victims of gun violence in Parkland and the survivors who carry scars.  See the families being ripped apart by inhumane deportation policies, those who are on the edge of losing their homes because they can’t find enough work, those who are spiraling into depression and addiction…”  Jesus rides into Jerusalem to challenge the violent ways of empire that leave beloved children vulnerable to trauma and starvation, that steal dignity and hope from those on the margins, that destroy God’s creation for economic gain; to challenge the forces of empire that think they can overpower or outspend the love and mercy of God.  Jesus came to remind those in places of religious influence to love God and to love their neighbor as themselves.    Why does it seem radical to simply do the right thing?  Because the way of God’s kin-dom flies in the face of what gets sold to us as “just the way it is.” Sacred resistance is what Jesus embodied on this day all those years ago and sacred resistance is what is needed for the living of all our days.  It doesn’t mean you have to do anything dramatic. It only means that you have to take seriously your intention to follow Jesus who embodies the wild notion that kindness and care and tenderness and justice and friendship and solidarity and love are the things matter most of all.                           [i] Laura McBride, We Are Called to Rise, this excerpt was shared on FaceBook by a friend. Repent? A sermon preached by Rev. Ginger E. Gaines-Cirelli at Foundry UMC, February 18, 2018, the first Sunday in Lent. “Dissonance” sermon series. Text: Mark 1:9-15   “Good news.”  I want to begin this sermon about repentance with those words: Good. News.   The beginning of the good news, according to Mark’s gospel, is John the baptizer preparing the way of the Lord, bringing the good news that one more powerful is coming. That one more powerful is Jesus who proclaims the good news of another kingdom that’s come; and make no mistake, when Jesus speaks of the kingdom of God, the first to hear know the game of thrones is on.  The kingdom Jesus proclaims is different, it is a kin-dom, it’s the vision and dream of the prophets, a way of living in relationship and in communion with God and neighbor that runs counter to the dissonant, violent ways of earthly kingdoms. Such an alternative kin-dom and its arrival is good news, the way of the Lord that is life in that kin-dom is good news, the one who incarnates the way is good news, the freedom and power the ever-present God gives us to persevere in following the way is good news. “Repent and believe in the good news.”   In the midst of ruthless earthly kingdoms like those of Herod and Rome in the first century and their current counterparts in our own time, can you believe there might be good news?  In the midst of the numbing, manipulative, co-optive powers of empire—powers that sap our sense of agency and threaten to steal our hope that things might change—can you believe there might be good news?  In the midst of dissonance—the discomfort and despair caused by disharmony, injustice, oppression, and violence—can you believe there might be good news?  In the wake of yet another mass school shooting—can you believe there might be good news?  In a world where it is easy to believe that God has left the building, can you believe the counter message?—that God is near and is always at work for good in the world?  That God’s grace enfolds and empowers you to live in the kin-dom?  That Christ is sovereign and the powers of this world are no match?   To “believe” (the way it is meant in the gospel) isn’t about intellectual assent to a list of doctrinal statements or head in the sand happy-clappy denial; it’s about trust and commitment. To believe the good news of God’s kin-dom is to trust God and the promise of God’s counter message; it is to commit to try to serve Christ and to live according to the way of the Lord.   To repent in the context of Mark’s gospel is to wake up to the ways we’re serving earthly empire instead of God’s kin-dom; it’s to return to God from the exile of life apart from God’s wisdom and way.  To return—an image connected to a path or journey—is one way John Dominic Crossan and Marcus Borg describe Mark’s use of the word repent.  They also point out that “the roots of the Greek word for ‘repent’ mean to ‘to go beyond the mind that you have.’ To repent is to embark upon a way that goes beyond the mind that you have.”[i]  Or, perhaps another way to say it, repentance is to choose to walk in the way God has in mind. Notice that this is active—to “embark” or to “choose to walk” denotes a journey in itself, a process.  To repent isn’t one moment where you pause to feel guilty and then move on.  It may begin with a moment of waking up, seeing something that needs to change, and feeling pain or regret for what you’re doing or have done—but then it entails an ongoing process of changing things in your life that are out of sync with God’s way of love, compassion, and justice.  What’s the point of getting “woke” if you just roll over and go back to sleep?   I imagine for many if not most of us, when we hear the word “repent” or “repentance” the image that pops into our mind is of a yelling, angry, judgmental, ungracious man holding a bible in one hand and a threatening placard in the other…  The rhetoric of sin and repentance has been (and continues to be) used to frighten and to control people, to shame and to silence people.     It never ceases to amaze me the ways we get things so twisted.  Repentance is meant not to bind us or make us shrink in fear.  Repentance is the path to freedom, the path to living with courage and assurance! “Repent AND believe the good news!”  In our baptismal covenant, we begin with renunciation and repentance so that we can then affirm the freedom and power to resist evil, injustice, and oppression (in order to turn toward life, we need to turn away from death); we are given freedom and power not to serve empire’s kings, queens, presidents, or dictators, but rather to serve the Lord, the sovereign, the Christ, the kin-dom of God.    Repentance does call for change in our lives.  It does require acknowledgement and confession that we are on a path that is not the path leading to life.  But the point is that God desires us to have life, our life, the life we were created to live.  To repent and believe the good news, is to return from the exile of empire and to trust that walking in the way of God’s kin-dom will lead us not only to closer relationship with God, but will set us free to live, really live our lives and, in so doing, to love and serve other people as well.   The abusive ways the words “sin” and “repentance” have been used in churches through the ages are painful reminders of the way the greed, control, and negative patriarchy of empire infects the body of Christ.  Barely a day passes when I don’t encounter someone who has been wounded by such abuse, wounded by words and judgments from beloved family, pastors, or friends, those words and judgments seared into the most tender place in their heart.  On the day of the wedding to her wife, the woman who asks, “You’re sure this is OK, right?” The man who loves his rural church ministry and so will not come out, denying his deep desire for relationship and for living more fully the truth of himself. The woman who is told her soul is in jeopardy because she had the audacity to find true love with a Jewish man instead of a Christian one; or the man who’s called a sinner for marrying a woman of a different race. The trans and queer folk who, even in relatively safe places, struggle to be able to fully shake the shame poured into them from their youth.   The words repentance and sin have been weaponized for so long…no wonder the past 50 years have found many mainline churches avoiding such talk.  By the time I came through seminary twenty-five years ago, there was a growing sense that, while such avoidance was understandable, erasing the language of sin and repentance may not be the answer for the long haul.  Why not? (after all, who really wants to think about those things anyway?)   Well, for one thing, sin, repentance, forgiveness, and reconciliation weigh pretty heavily in the Bible.  According to our scriptures, from the beginning, we cashed in our original goodness for something else we thought would be worth it—control, power, knowledge, the elimination of other people who challenge what we want… And God’s been after us ever since to help us make a different choice.  For another thing, as I’ve already noted, repentance is a necessary step on the journey toward the life in Christ that sets us free—we can’t change something we haven’t acknowledged and nothing will change if, once we know, we do nothing.  To repent and believe the good news isn’t about checking boxes on a list of doctrinal statements we may not even understand or about having sorry feelings and good intentions.  It’s about allowing the pain of what is wrong wake you up and motivate an active turn toward a way of life that is aligned with the way of Christ.    And the truth is that there are things in our personal lives and in the communities human beings create and maintain that are NOT aligned with the way of Christ.  Willingly and unwittingly we participate in systems of injustice and oppression and white supremacy because we live in an imperial culture saturated with those things.  And our own personal limitations and fears and brokenness lead us to hurt others and ourselves, to fail to love and care for the beauty and gift of this life and of life together.   Jesus was tempted to forego the ways of God’s kin-dom for the ways of empire and resisted. John paid the price for resisting and challenging empire—landing in prison. And, because Jesus resisted evil, injustice and oppression, he too became public enemy number one.  We know that turning onto the path that is the way of Christ is not without cost; it requires something from us.    One of those things is a willingness to forego our own comfort for the sake of waking up—to look honestly at our lives and to deal with the pain of acknowledging where we need to change course, where we are doing harm, where we are participating in empire’s injustice and oppression without resistance, where we need to try to become more aligned with the ways of God’s kin-dom.   The possibility of our alignment with such an alternative kin-dom is good news, the way of Christ is good news, the one who shows us the way is the good news, the freedom and power the ever-present God gives us to persevere in following the way is good news.   What repentance needs to happen in your life so that you might believe the good news?      ______________________________  [i] Marcus J.
