Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries summary from Goodreads.com: "A curmudgeonly professor journeys to a small town in the far north to study faerie folklore and discovers dark fae magic, friendship, and love in the start of a heartwarming and enchanting new fantasy series.Cambridge professor Emily Wilde is good at many things: She is the foremost expert on the study of faeries. She is a genius scholar and a meticulous researcher who is writing the world's first encyclopaedia of faerie lore. But Emily Wilde is not good at people. She could never make small talk at a party--or even get invited to one. And she prefers the company of her books, her dog, and the Fair Folk.So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hrafnsvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk. Nor does she care to spend time with another new arrival: her dashing and insufferably handsome academic rival Wendell Bambleby, who manages to charm the townsfolk, get in the middle of Emily's research, and utterly confound and frustrate her.But as Emily gets closer and closer to uncovering the secrets of the Hidden Ones--the most elusive of all faeries--lurking in the shadowy forest outside the town, she also finds herself on the trail of another mystery: Who is Wendell Bambleby, and what does he really want? To find the answer, she'll have to unlock the greatest mystery of all--her own heart." Rose Auroras is a sorceress and seer, specialising in Faery & Elf-related issues and spiritual needs. She is part of a spiritual lineage of Celtic origin, but also trained in other spiritual traditions including Trolldom and Hoodoo/Conjure. Many people encounter issues or have spiritual needs related to the Good People (faeries) or the Alfar (Elves). Some may experience Faery-related activity, whether positive or negative, without understanding the reasons behind it, yet they wish to know why. Additionally, there are those courageous individuals who seek to establish a working relationship with the Fair Folk or the Alfar but are uncertain about how to do so safely. Addressing any of these Faery-related needs, and more, is Rose's area of expertise. In the Plus show we get into hybridism, how these entities can manifest. Rose tells us about her fascinating experiences with scrying and what she has seen surrounding people who have availed of her services, including Dark Man spirits. This is a brilliant conversation and hits the Spirit Box bullseye over and over again! Enjoy! And so we return! We're coming back from hiatus a little bit later than anticipated, both because it was a busy summer, and because we realized there aren't really that many episodes to get through before the end of the year. So, now that it feels more like autumn in this bit of the world, it's time to get through the rest of C20 and ancillary things on our list. One of the latter is Graceful Wicked Masques, the 2nd edition Exalted book that covers the Fair Folk. While this text is solidly outside the era of "Exalted is the prehistory of the World of Darkness kinda maybe", there's still a lot of connective tissue we see between this text and Changeling: the Dreaming. (If you need ideas for Deep Dreaming games or True Fae, for example, this is absolutely a good resource.) So we are once again diving into the library and seeing what gems we can unearth...! When we covered Dark Ages: Fae, we mentioned that it was the one canonical historical setting kind of for Changeling. That's not entirely true, because in the earliest days of the Exalted line, its world was lightly framed as the "prehistory" of the World of Darkness. While that aspect fell out of the setting pretty quickly, the first edition still echoes many of the modern World of Darkness games, recycling terms and ideas in novel ways. The counterpart to Changeling is Exalted: the Fair Folk, wherein we learn about the mysterious patterns of chaos pretending to be people that live in the Wyld outside the borders of Creation. That's close enough for our liking—join us as we read through this chomker of a tome and see what we can extract to inform a Changeling: the Dreaming game experience. Maybe what we find will be unexpected...! Or, you know, it might not. We can neither claim nor dismiss any kind of surprise. Fall is a great time to dive into tales of the supernatural, and what's more supernatural than your local fair folk, hm? Well, don't get me wrong here, fall's just the best time, I can enjoy a wild tale of a man who's on a journey to see and hear things far beyond what he ought to be experiencing any time! That makes this particular story a great fit for the moment both you, me, and past-me who recorded it, at least, if you ask me. I gotta admit, I'm curious about M.R. James' other work after how much I really enjoyed this one. There's a fantastic story being woven here, one of a man dragged through a whole set of worlds with which he's thoroughly unfamililar. Sure, sure, we've been hammering home that theme a lot with the recent episodes, but this one does it in a way that's fascinatingly different, done more in a fashion akin to modern tales of fantasy "isekai" rather than the more straightforward science fiction planet-hopper. At long last, we come to the end of the road... well, not the end, because that would (presumably) be Arcadia. But we are deeper into the Dreaming than we've yet been, as we deal this week with the final part of our dive into Dreams and Nightmares! Joining us is C20 author and longtime community bastion Charlie Cantrell, for a discussion of the Realms in the farthest reaches of dream, and the stories one might tell on the way there. While we are talking about the Deep Dreaming write-ups in particular, the conversation ranges across the entirety of the book and what it has to offer. Our conclusion: it's an indispensable one for players and Storytellers alike, even those who have never played 2nd Edition, but it's a springboard more than a proper guide. There are hundreds (thousands?) of ideas floating around its pages, with little to no guidance on how to use them. But for a representation of the infinite space that is the collective subconscious, it's hard to see how the book could have been anything else... This almanac episode dives into the folklore of February through the lens of the Ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia on February 15th, tracing the themes of birth, milk, wolves, wildness, purification, death, twilight, and thunder through the month's other pagan holidays, including St. Brigid's day on February 1st, Candlemas / Gromnica / Perkunas Day on February 2nd, and Scandinavian St. Peter Hotstone on February 22nd. This month's episode asks what the notion of purification might mean in a pagan context, and suggests it may mean facing the shadow parts of ourselves that we tend to project onto animals (and women) so we can ritually integrate them, clarifying and owning our role as powerfully in-between creatures in a powerfully in-between world. Important dates: February 1: Brigid's Day / Bride (Ireland / Scotland) February 2: Candlemas (Christian) / Gromnica (Slavic) / Perkunas day (Lithuania) / Perun's Day (Belarus) February 14: St. Valentine's day February 15: Lupercalia February 21: Mardi Gras / end of Carnivale / Start of Lent February 22: St. Peter Hot-stone Listen to the February Almanac playlist on Tidal: https://tidal.com/browse/playlist/4c148b82-bfe5-46cf-ba26-63b7bc2a7acd Listen to the February Almanac playlist on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2QSKLQ8WeAq9v26NWfpTtX?si=33e31c5e2fe74971 Music in this episode: “Lupercalia” by Faun Buy Faun's music: https://shop.faun-music.com/ “Värgsangen” by Jonna Jinton More Jonna Jinton music: https://www.youtube.com/user/jonnajinton Buy Jonna Jinton's art: https://jonnajintonsweden.com/ “Ulvetimme” (The Hour of the Wolf) Maria Franz and Christopher Juul Buy Heilung's (Maria Franz and Christopher Juul) music: https://heilung.bandcamp.com/ “Mary's Keen” by Noirin Ni Riain Buy this track: https://music.apple.com/ca/album/marys-keen/992023961?i=992023970 Buy Noirin Ni Riain's music: https://music.apple.com/ca/album/stor-amhran/41446103 “Grá” by Wardruna Buy Wardruna music and merch: https://wardrunashop.com/collections/music Buy Wardruna digital tracks: https://wardruna.bandcamp.com/music Opening theme: "Forest March" by Sylvia Woods Buy Sylvia Woods' music: www.harpcenter.com/category/harp-cds Sources for this episode: Watch Ronja Robbersdaughter: https://fsharetv.io/watch/ronja-robbersdaughter-episode-1-tt0088015 Watch Wolf Walkers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_Z_tybgPgg Emperors of Rome Podcast, Lupercalia episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/episode-cxxxv-lupercalia/id850148806?i=1000465237605 History and Folklore Podcast: Medieval Wolves episode: https://historyandfolklorepodcast.libsyn.com/medieval-wolves Medieval Folklore: A Guide to Myths, Legends, Tales, Beliefs, and Customs edited by Carl Lindahl, John McNamara, and John Lindow: entry: “Wolf [Canis Lupus] and Werewolf” The Nordic Animist Year (book) by Rune Rasmussen Candlelight Tales Podcast: Brigid episode: https://soundcloud.com/candlelittales/episode-7-brigid Transcript: Welcome to the podcast. In this January almanac episode, I share about how English Plough Sunday and Plough Monday rituals dovetail with pagan midwinter worship of Odin to present a quandary as rich today as ever: How do we hold sacred the human capacity to employ technologies that multiply our power, while dancing on the delicate balance between service and domination? How do we bless the hard work of human hands where it meets the life of the world? This episode delves into traditions of chasing out the spirits of Yule, as well as blessing of apple trees, ploughs, and ultimately ploughboys as representatives of the overflow of human passion and physical power. This month I'll be focusing on the new cycle of years changing over the end of the Yule season and our relationship to labour and technology, which was a focus that arose for me while I was researching this January episode. That hasn't arisen for me before, but it definitely is an emphasis of English and Nordic tradition, and it'll explain more as we go ahead. Other themes that arise in January folklore are the continued divination and predictive quality for the year ahead that we've may have already seen in December. Folklore also the supernatural and the feminine visiting from the wilds beyond, because it is still winter and these forces still rule. There's often a theme in January songs especially of weather, bad weather, loneliness, cold and love, longing as metaphorically associated with those sensations of coldness and isolation in the wintertime. And of course, the slow return of the sun is being observed across European folklore, which is what I always focus on.

Expanded Perspectives

On this episode of Expanded Perspectives, the guys start the show off talking about the Texas Heat Wave they have been experiencing and the local brush fires popping up around them. Then, a couple meets what they think is a real-life Leprechaun at a Costco in Southlake, Texas. Then, a listener calls in with a very strange sighting in the mountains of Tennessee back in 1982 or so. After the break, Cam brings up some more strange encounters with possible Fae Folk! Have you ever taken a walk through the woods but can't stop checking behind you? Did you feel like you were being watched, or that the woods were speaking to you? If you've ever had an experience like this, then you have probably been around the Fae Folk without even knowing it. The Fae Folk, also known as the Fair Folk or Good Folk, are present in many areas. You probably picture a gorgeous, magical, woodsy area when you think of fairies, but in reality, they can live in a simple backyard or city park. Even though you probably picture a fairy as a small, angelic being with wings, in reality, the Fae Folk are comprised of many different creatures. There is no one specific type of fairy. Accounts from well-known witches mention pixies, elves, kelpies, fairy horses, fairy dogs, and much much more. Some beings in the Otherworld are so different that we have no human name for them. We certainly don't have a record of every being in the Otherworld. Almost every area of the world has groups of Fae Folk who are indigenous to the region. The Fae Folk come in all different sizes, shapes, and forms; they may look very different from each other. There is no set way that a fairy looks. Maybe you've had an encounter and don't even realize it. All of this and more on this installment of Expanded Perspectives! But it wasn't always this way. Tonight, we sit down with best-selling author Piper CJ to discuss the Fair Folk, the similarities between folk tales of the Celtic, Germanic, and Greco-Roman traditions, and the controversy surrounding Piper's first novel. Content Warning: This episode discusses histories of desecration around wells and the people who tend them and using rape as a tool of empire building. (No graphic descriptions). It also contains a story about a young girl seeking answers to a devastating plague (that ultimately ends on a hopeful note). Here's a little bonus episode on the healing lore and powers of the waters of life and death and a powerful story that came to me in 2019. I've been thinking about this idea of the necessity of the waters of death (and life!) and it seems a fitting exploration as I witness the deep drought and climate chaos of this time. I hope this episode brings some solace, some resonance and some hope. My apologies that in the story of the Owl Witch I mention there being guardian oak growing in multiple places, and my little California heart forgot that Guardian Oak doesn't grow in Appalachia! I meant Guardian Ivy! I have much to learn about the plant beings there :) Also, here is a link to the Fair Folk podcast I mentioned, which is produced by Danica Boyce. It is a great resource for people of European lineage to reconnect with some of their own lifeways. After spending some more time with this episode, I would have liked to include some advice for Mary to do that vital work of reconnecting to her own lifeways and lineage so that she has the strength and resilience to keep seeking healing and balance. It is so important that colonizer descended peoples do this so that we can remember how to be in the family of things. https://soundcloud.com/fairfolkcast --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Herb at the End of the World is created by Samwise Raridon, community herbalist, teacher and organizer of the Self Heal Herbs Mobile Free Clinic based in unceded Ohlone and Southern Pomo Territory (colonially known as oakland and sebastopol CA). Nightmare Magazine - Horror and Dark Fantasy Story Podcast (Audiobook | Short Stories)

Three poor sisters lived in a cottage at the edge of a wild place. The elder, Rose and Lily, started each day in a furious bustle, storming around the kitchen before dawn preparing for the day, frying bread for breakfast, slicing cheese for lunch, scrubbing the table, which was already clean, and pestering the youngest, Violet, about her chores. Had she collected the eggs yet, had she milked the cow, had she made sure the iron and rowan were still above all the doors to protect them from the Fair Folk so the hens would keep laying and the cow keep giving milk? | Copyright 2017 by Carrie Vaughn.
