For this Episode we literally go back to where it all started and the man himself, Dan Blakeslee. Dan is responsible for two of the most iconic labels in craft beer and some of the early inspirations for the podcast and project - The Alchemist's Heady Topper and Focal Banger. Dan has been an active part of our evolution and growth and it means a lot to us. From Episode 1 to appearing at two of our events. Summer '17 at Kehler Liddell Gallery in New Haven, CT and Hubbub in Bridgton Maine. Not only is he a great artist and human, he's a storyteller and musician. He performed at both events and even brings some music to this episode. He's one of the good guys and a beautiful soul. Dan recently lost his brother and we want to dedicate this episode to him and his memory. I wish I could have given him a hug and let him know he's in our hearts. A great episode that puts it all in perspective to see how far we have come together.

We decided that although we would not travel across state lines to pick up the beer, if the opportunity presents itself we would most definitely purchase again. Happy Monday, everybody! This week, Ryan and Alex are trying two beers! Heady Topper and Focal Banger, both from The Alchemist. The Alchemist is a family run brewery specializing in fresh, unfiltered IPAs. John and Jen Kimmich originally opened The Alchemist as a 60 seat brew pub in the village of Waterbury in 2003. After eight years of success and growing popularity, they decided to open The Alchemist Cannery, a 15 barrel brewery and canning line built for the production of their flagship IPA, Heady Topper. Today, they move all their beer weekly in a concerted effort to provide the freshest, hoppiest packaged IPAs on the market. Heady Topper is brewed only in Waterbury, Vermont and is distributed throughout the state. Their Waterbury brewery is not open to the public, however, they distribute a portion of Heady Topper to their Stowe brewery and Visitor’s Center for retail sales and tasting. They opened the state of the art Stowe facility in 2016, designed to be as low impact as possible while providing them with enough space to serve their community and the growing number of beer tourists to Vermont. Their second year round beer, Focal Banger, is brewed in Stowe, as well as seasonal beers that rotate throughout the year. Heady Topper is a Double IPA with a proprietary blend of six hops – each imparting its own unique flavor and aroma. There’s just enough malt to give this beer some backbone, but not enough to take the hops away from the center stage. Focal Banger is an IPA with a crisp and clean British malt character, that utilizes Citra and Mosaic hops. That’s probably the best way to put: you don’t watch this movie, you experience it. It’s as intense as any movie out there; visually, audibly, emotionally, viscerally. And that beer? Well, it’s not all those things, but it’s pretty damn delicious. We appreciate what Alchemist has done with Heady Topper, and again here with Focal Banger. This movie is a trip, this beer is excellent, and we think the newest Flix & a Six was too, only on The Spinchoon!

John discusses the journey his brewery and pub have taken—from brewing 400 barrels a year to 18,000—with no compromise on quality and zero marketing efforts. proceeds from the production brewery became the source of funds to rebuild the pub 07:27 – The pub was rebuilt, but they were unable to put the brewery back into the basement – they leased out the building and focused on the production 07:48 – Within the first month, they went from 1,500 to 3,000 barrels 08:25 – Over the course of 6-8 months, they were able to do up to 9,000 barrels 09:20 – They had zero marketing – all came from word of mouth 09:53 – Quality was what made their beer stand out 10:20 – John has been making Heady Toppers since 2004 10:46 – In 2011, unavailability was the driving factor to get Heady Topper out into the market 11:34 – The couple knew if they put it out into the market, it would click 12:04 – John learned to brew from Greg Noonan at the Vermont Pub &
