Happy New Year, and welcome back to another bone-chilling episode of Beer Before Fear! To kick off 2024, we're digging into the what many believe (including Erik)is one of the greatest horror movies of all time, "The Shining" from 1980, starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall.  And, this time around, Erik has paired another fantastic beer to go with it, this time from Foam Brewers u[ in Burlington, VT.   After the holiday season, isolation and seasonal depression seems to be pretty common for a lot of people, and so we thought this might be the perfect time to discuss a movie that's all about isolation and seasonal depression, complete with a Double IPA to catch a serious buzz.  So raise your glasses with us as we  dissect and discuss one of the greatest films of all time.  Cheers!Follow us on Instagram, and say hi!

Foam Brewers has become one of Vermont's favorite breweries, since they opened their doors on Burlington's Lake Street in 2016. Since then, they've expanded to offer a full-service restaurant called Deep City, and they work with a variety of local farm partners to not only source food for the restaurant, but also source hops and grain for the beers brewed at foam. VFN's executive director Tara Pereira talks with Bob Grim of Foam Brewers, Zach Toensing of Deep City, and Kevin Broderick of Whitefield Hop Yard about the relationships their businesses have, and how they've built a sustainable cycle from the farm, to the glass, to the table.  Note: shortly after this episode was recorded, Deep City announced that they'll be closing indefinitely for normal service, due to a variety of challenges facing the restaurant and hospitality industry. Foam Brewers remains open and thriving, and they continue to have a strong relationship with Whitefield Hop Yard. We look forward to Deep City's reopening in the future!

Foam Brewers Robert Grim enjoys a good lager but he admits that it's still all about the hops in Vermont. Foam is in Burlington, VT where you can swing a hop bine and hit a handful of breweries making great IPAs.  When making your choice of where to visit, you should know that Foam is a James Beard semi-finalist for Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages Program.  How about that? We kick things off discussing underrated beer styles.  Shout out VinePair for inspiring this discussion. We learn about Bob's brewing background and how he came to co-found Foam.  We celebrate the end of Dry January and find out if anyone at Foam gave it a shot and Bob tells us about the Woman of Foam's recent Amber Ale brew. In addition to Foam, Bob's other business include a restaurant (Deep City), farm winery (Natural Hack), and mixed ferm brewery (House of Fermentology) and there's a cannabis beverage company (Taunik), too. We've got to get up and visit Vermont soon.  We're going to drink all the beers.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Bonus drop! The fourth Link Up series saw the brewery collaborations expand south of the border, and what a way to launch in the US with Burlington, VT's Foam Brewers! Co-Founders Bob and Jon joined Tiff and Cee for an incredibly insightful chat about the state of diversity in Vermont, how breweries can deepen their connection to the community around them, their work with Pink Boots, what they've learned from their conversations surrounding Link Up and how they're putting those ideas into action. They crushed Foam's incredible 7% IPA, which boasts Champlain Valley Hops' Cascade, Citra and Sabro hops - it's juicy and citrusy with elements of grass, pine and marzipan. And that's a wrap for Series 4! A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the breweries who participated, everyone who supported and to our newest program applicants. See y'all for Series 5 in Spring 2023!    About the Link Up season: We're back with a brand new season of BAOS Podcast, and this one is something very special and very close to us. Our aim with this program is to help BIPOC from underrepresented communities learn about and enter the craft beer industry in essentially any area they wish - from a brewing apprentice to taking the Cicerone course for front-of-house opportunities, from hop farming to the yeast lab, from beer media to design and photography, we're here to help diversify an industry that is in dire need of it. This week, Beer Sessions Radio is all about Vermont hops. On the show is Bob Grim and Sam Keane from Foam Brewers in Burlington, VT; and Julian Post and Max Licker from Champlain Valley Hops in Starksboro, VT. The conversation begins with all things hops. Julian introduces everyone to Vermont agriculture, explains just how niche the hop industry is, and wows the gang with some impressive hops statistics. Then, Bob and Sam offer a brewer’s perspective, emphasizing the importance of sourcing quality, local ingredients, and collaborating with your community to create a unique atmosphere within a brewery. For Bob and Sam, using local hops offers an exciting end result, with tropical, unexpected tasting notes people have never tried before. At the end of the evening, the gang asks Julian for a couple of short and long-term projections. Julian offers a preview into what he’ll be growing this season, and then also reflects on his biggest fear in the next ten years.Photo Courtesy of Max Licker.Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. Meanwhile, the company’s two flagship brands — Bud Light and Budweiser — continue to lose volume although both still rank among the top five Brewery Openings on the Rise in Major U.S. Population Centers, BA ReportsU.S. cities with populations in excess of 5 million have seen the most percentage growth of brewery openings in the past five years, according to Brewers Association chief economist Bart Watson. In an email to Brewbound, Watson explained that the growth in the number of breweries in the U.S.’s largest cities is partially due to those locations playing “catch-up” with the rest of the country.Watson’s data — including an interactive map — revealed that eight metro areas are now home to more than 100 breweries.Leading the way is Chicago, with 167 breweries. Interviewed Chet Brett (Brand Manager) from Tribes Brewing Co. in Mokena, IL - Chicago area– they are doing well and selling a lot of beer.Trailing Chicago are long-time beer meccas and other major population centers, including Denver (158), Seattle (153), San Diego (150), Los Angeles (146), New York (141), Portland, Oregon (139), and Philadelphia (113).The last time Watson charted the data — in 2013 — Seattle’s 87 breweries were the most in the nation. Chicago ranked fifth that year with 62 breweries, trailing Portland, Oregon (77), San Diego (76) and Denver (63).Rankings are fleeting, however, as more breweries open their doors and shutter. According to the BA, 7,000 breweries were in operation as of the end of October, with potentially as many as 1,000 openings in 2018. Meanwhile, Watson told Brewbound earlier this year that he anticipates as many as 300 brewery closures by the end of 2018, as the gap between openings and closings begins to converge.News courtesy of Brewbound (https://www.brewbound.com/)Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NHMichael PotortiFounder/BrewerHost of "Craft Beer Storm" Podcastmichael@craftbeerstorm.commichael@bearairishbrew.com*** Come visit our brewery for some delicious local craft brew! ***Beara Brewing Co.2800 Lafayette RoadPortsmouth, NH 03801Tel. Co-hosts Andrew James (@OneWhoSeesDimly) and Eric D. (@HopSnobbery) launch Episode 001 of Riff On, titled '21 Years of Craft Beer'. Andrew shouts out the Two Brews Podcast early on, started by Matt Gadaus and Kris Jarrett, check their archives out at http://twobrewspodcast.weebly.com/ Andrew and Eric discuss their history with craft beer and namely, Vermont Beer. Andrew lived in Haiti, Toronto, Belfast, Rwanda, Burundi and Asheville, NC and then got into beer started a wee late, in 2006, due to his missionary work. Eric, meanwhile, started drinking craft beer when he turned 21 in 1996. Mentioning Long Trail, Catamount, Magic Hat and the Vermont Pub and Brewery, one of the oldest brewpubs in the United States, originally founded by Greg Noonan (RIP) along the way. Eric ponders to Andy "If you found Jesus, did you lose Jesus?", but we promise not to riff on politics or religion. Andrew and Eric talk about breweries that got into the craft beer game ahead of the curve, namely Sam Adams and Sierra Nevada, that are losing market share because they're not longer viewed as a small, independent craft brewer. While sharing a Collective Arts Stranger Then Fiction Porter, Eric states it's a wonderful time to be a beer drinker, while bemoaning the current costs of craft beer, with $72 a case becoming the new norm. Beyond Lawson's, Hill Farmstead, and The Alchemist, Andrew and Eric D. talk quickly about some of the other great Vermont breweries including Fiddlehead, Foley Brothers, Zero Gravity, Foam Brewers, Upper Pass, Bent Hill, Four Quarters, Hermit Thrush, River Roost, Good Measure, Rock Art, Lost Nation and Ten Bends. Andrew James hosts The Local Haunt on Facebook. Eric D. also hosts the Let's Fix Construction podcast. www.LFCpodcast.com Please give us a follow on Twitter or Instagram at @RiffOnPodcast and a like on Facebook at www.facebook.com/RiffOnPodcast/
