If you had 30 seconds to share the most important parts of living in God's kingdom, what would you say? What would you include? What would you leave out? In Matthew 6, Jesus gives us the perfect elevator pitch on the heart of the Christian life. We know those words today as the Lord's Prayer. In this episode we will unpack this prayer and discuss how Jesus intended it to be a guide for daily life.

Jesus said, "let your good works be seen by others that they would glorify God" and then a few minutes later he said, "give in secret." What is Jesus trying to teach us about giving and serving with these two seemingly contradictory statements. "Go the extra mile" and "Turn the other cheek" are universally known expressions that were first spoken by Jesus himself. A common criticism of modern missions in the US is that it feeds what is commonly called a "white savior complex." This critique gives many people in the western church pause about mission trips and serving under-resourced parts of the world. How should Christians and church leaders address this critique? In this episode of the Orchard Podcast, Mike and Brian interview two South African pastors to get their perspective on the impact of short term mission trips on their church, community and even themselves as pastors. Our guest speakers are Pastor Patrick Mokgosi and Pastor Victor Motlhampe. They both have served as pastors of vulnerable communities for over two decades and during that time have hosted many mission teams from the United States. This is a truly fascinating conversation to hear what a mission trip is like from the standpoint of the host pastor.  For nearly 20 years, Orchard: Africa has been hosting mission teams with a unified focus of partnering with local African pastors and churches already at work in vulnerable communities. Whether you are caring for the vulnerable in Southern Africa, planting a church in Eastern Europe, or reaching those in need in your own backyard, we all want to do the greatest amount of good as possible for the greatest number of people as possible. For this to happen, we must all hold two key truths in tension: "Do no one harm" and "Do good to all." Mike, Michelle and Brian will talk about the importance, challenge and practice of holding these two truths in balance as we serve a world in need.

We are all made in the image of God, but what does it take to reflect that image as we serve vulnerable people around the world? Why did he do that and what can we learn from Jesus' example about caring for the needs of people. Was Jesus a humanitarian? There is often a divide in Christian circles about the relationship between evangelism and more humanitarian responses to human suffering. How should Christians respond to this debate? We are going to dive into this topic looking at how the life and teaching of Jesus sheds light on this tension.

You will hear from Mike and Michelle Tessendorf and Brian LaMew as they talk about the meaning, value and requirements of true sustainability in global communities.

In this episode, we will be discussing a very important question for those engaged in the work of global compassion. The question is, "Whose need are you serving and is it the real need?" Even with good intentions, we can do a lot of harm if we respond to needs in an uninformed way. You will learn how to identify what is and is not the real need. Also, we will give you a framework to find a healthy way to respond to that need. Finally, we will share what steps you can take to begin meeting the real need in a way that creates a strong partnership that moves vulnerable communities toward sustainable change.
