Ten years ago, on the fourth episode of the show, I investigated why the C-word is considered a worse swear than the others. Since then - well really just in the last three years or so - there has been a huge development: the word has hit the mainstream as a compliment. Linguists Nicole Holliday and Kelly Elizabeth Wright discuss this use of the word originating in the ballroom culture of New York City in the 1990s, and what it means to turn such a strong swear into praise.Related to this: the Allusionist live show Souvenirs! Which is about, among other things, some of the tech problems today's word causes, and how being one can wreck a friendship and a printing press. At least 31 people are dead after India fired missiles into several areas of Pakistan and territory it controls on Wednesday. India says the strikes aim to "preempt" and "deter" cross-border terror attacks. The escalation follows the massacre of Hindu tourists in Indian-controlled Kashmir last month. Pakistan has dismissed India's allegations of its harboring terrorist camps as unfounded. Meanwhile, the leader of a U.N.-designated terrorist group in Pakistan reported that ten of his family members had been killed in the attacks.President Donald Trump is to participate in the swearing-in ceremony of David Perdue as the U.S. Ambassador to China. Perdue served as a Senator for the State of Georgia, was a former Fortune 500 CEO, and is recognized as a strong China critic who lived in Hong Kong for a time during his 40-year business career. Perdue was confirmed by the Senate in a 67–29 vote on April 29. Perdue's ambassadorship comes amid deepening bilateral trade tensions between the two countries.

We often think it's the big events that shape our kids, but bestselling author Daniel Pink reminds us it's the ordinary moments that leave the deepest impact. In this episode, he opens up about minimizing time away from home and why being there, even when nothing special is happening, might just be the most important thing of all. Daniel Pink is an award-winning author of five New York Times bestsellers, including his latest, The Power of Regret: How Looking Backward Moves Us Forward. Hours before the Beyonce’s first night of her Cowboy Carter Tour thousands of tickets were still available — with prices crashing as low as $20.00. Meghan Markle, 43, shut down months of swirling divorce speculation — insisting that she and Harry, 40, are in it "forever." You’re not lazy. You’re just out of capacity — and no amount of to-do lists can fix that. So what do you do when your brain is fried, your calendar is full, and you're still trying to show up for the people (and priorities) that matter most? Neuroscientist Ariel Garten has been there. As the co-founder of Muse, the brain-sensing headband used by over 500,000 people and backed by 200+ clinical studies, she’s learned how to work with her brain, not against it — using real-time feedback, five-minute resets, and a deeply human understanding of what it means to do less, better. In this episode, Ariel and I talk about: How she uses Muse to train her brain across focus, emotion regulation, and sleep The five-minute session she does daily to “work out” her prefrontal cortex What happens after meditation that makes the biggest difference Her go-to system for catching herself when she’s stressed, triggered, or procrastinating If you’ve been trying to push through the overwhelm, this conversation is a powerful reminder that focus, calm, and clarity aren’t things you force - they’re things you can train. Key Quotes: “What you have to do is recognise that it’s ok to have limitation and it's ok to only do so much in a day.” “Forcing yourself to do something that you're not good at, trains you to just do it better each and every time.” “My bad habits became my triggers for better habits — but only once I noticed them.” Connect with Ariel via LinkedIn, Instagram, and X (Twitter). Donald Trump is trying to convince the country that the economy is doing better than ever, but it doesn't look like anyone is buying that. At the same time that Trump was telling us that everything was fine, the stock market was crashing and banks were warning that a recession could be right around the corner. Donald Trump may have lost a very valuable ally, as even Joe Rogan is not happy about his deportations. Rogan came out against the administration's policies in a recent episode of his podcast after he learned that innocent people are being shipped to the torture prison in El Salvador. Rogan had been supportive of Trump's immigration policies in the past, so if even he thinks they've become too extreme then things must be really bad. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced this week that it was "case closed" on the Signal chat leak scandal, and nobody is going to be punished for anything, nor are there any indications that their methods are going to change. The problem for Leavitt and the administration is that it is NOT "case closed," and the American public is still demanding answers and accountability for those responsible for this careless act. Donald Trump doesn't have many allies left across the globe, and the few that he does have are worried that his brand of toxic conservatism is going to hurt them in their own countries. Many had predicted a wave of "populist conservative" victories after Trump won the election, but those expected victories never materialized, and they believe that Trump is to blame for it. If this trend continues, these allies fear that conservatives across the globe will feel the backlash.Text and and let us know your thoughts on today's stories!Subscribe to our YouTube channel to stay up to date on all of Farron's content: https://www.youtube.com/FarronBalancedFollow Farron on social media! Uncle Si hosts a revolving door of interesting guests, from YouTube stars JStu to the San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Colton McKivitz. Si seems a little jealous of JStu's team of builders who create their amazing builds, from backyard roller coasters to full-on spaceship movie sets. Colton and his dad, Mike, came to Louisiana just to meet the Robertsons for a special reason, and Si must admit that his own gridiron tall tales don't measure up to Colton's phenomenal career. Elsie the cat has a set of 120 buttons programmed with words. She uses them to lie, swear, apologise, express grief and frustration and love to her human, the author Mary Robinette Kowal, who talks about what's involved in learning to communicate via language buttons with companion animals. And animal behaviour expert Zazie Todd explains how animals might be interacting with human language. This is the first half of a two-parter: in the next episode, some talking dogs - and their humans - come to visit, and we hear about the kinds of things you find out about what your animal friend is really thinking, and how it changes the ways you communicate with other humans too. In 15th and 16th century Scotland, in the highest courts of the land, you'd find esteemed poets hurling insults at each other. This was flyting, a sort of medieval equivalent of battle rap, and it was so popular at the time that the King himself wrote instructions for how to do it well. Writer and Scots language campaigner Ishbel McFarlane and historical linguist Joanna Kopaczyk explain the art of flyting, where an insult becomes slander, what's going on within the speech act of performative diss-trading, and what the legal consequences could be of being accused of witchcraft. Find out more about the episode and read the transcript at theallusionist.org/flyting. Content note: this episode contains brief references to historical capital and corporal punishments, and discussion of insults and slurs; there is also a derogatory term for sex workers, and category A and B swears. "If you grow up being told that one of your first languages, Singlish, is actually a bad version of an already existing language, you kind of get this sense that “I'm just bad at language,” says Bibek Gurung, a former linguist who grew up in Singapore speaking Singlish with his family and friends, while schools and the government tried to quash it. "Language is a fundamental human skill. And to just have this sense that you're bad at this very fundamental skill really does a number to your self esteem and your abilities to communicate in general." Find out more about the episode and read the transcript at theallusionist.org/singlish. Content note: this episode contains references to corporal punishment of children. From the BBC World Service: Anura Kumara Dissanayake has been sworn into office in Sri Lanka, promising “clean” politics as the country recovers from one of its worst-ever economic crises.
