There's a lot of talk in the entrepreneurial world about the dream of “being your own boss.” But what happens when you finally become your own boss… and realise you've turned into the worst boss you've ever had? This episode introduces a different way of thinking about how perfectionism is showing up in your business. It's a metaphor that'll help you really see why you keep getting in your own way – and what to do about it. Because when your perfectionism handbrake is on, it doesn't matter how motivated or disciplined you are. You'll still feel behind, burned out, overthinking everything, and wondering why nothing is working. In this episode, I'm walking you through what it means to be both the boss and the employee in your business – and how perfectionism can make both of those roles way harder than they need to be. I'll show you how to start being the kind of boss you actually want to work for (no matter where you're at right now), and why that shift alone can change everything. Inside PGSD, we teach you how to be the kind of boss you'd actually like to work for and the kind of employee who gets shit done without burning out. If you've been spinning your wheels and wondering what you're missing, this episode will help you understand what's really going on and how to finally get out of your own way. Power Planning works for entrepreneurs at every level of income, whether you're just starting out, trying to make your first consistent income, or already running a seven-figure business. When your perfectionist mindset is working for you instead of against you, creating time and space for what matters becomes so much easier. Eliška already had a seven-figure jewellery business when she signed up for Perfectionists Getting Shit Done (PGSD). But she was exhausted. There was no breathing room in her schedule. Her dream of starting a coaching business had been sitting on the backburner for years. And the idea of having a second child felt like too much to handle. Fast forward to today and Eliška now has two successful businesses and is eight months pregnant with baby number two. Thanks to the changes she made inside PGSD, her husband was able to quit his CEO role to be home with the kids (something they never imagined was possible when she first joined). In this episode, Eliška shares how Power Planning helped her simplify everything she was doing and finally make time for more. More presence with her family. More connection with her husband. More progress in her business. And, most importantly, more trust in herself to follow through without the all-or-nothing pressure. We talk about the real changes she experienced in her work and home life, how PGSD helped her feel supported without needing to show up to live coaching calls, and what she would say if you're on the fence about joining. If you're feeling overwhelmed trying to juggle it all or frustrated that you're not making the progress you know you're capable of, this episode will help you see that it's not about working harder or being more disciplined. It's about learning how to plan in a way that actually works for your perfectionist brain. PGSD gives you the tools, support, and structure to finally follow through without burning out or falling off track when life gets full. This is Part 5 of my 5-Part Clean Rest Series. I first experimented with clean rest in 2014 (though I didn't have a name for it back then). I just knew I needed a break. In 2018, after another exhausting launch, I came back to it with intention. I was tired of burning out every time I pushed for a big goal. Something had to change. Now, clean rest is the backbone of my business. It grounds me. It gives me the courage to put my ideas out there, even when they're not perfect. And it's the reason I haven't burned out in over three years, even while making more money than ever and navigating motherhood. In this final episode of the clean rest series, I'm sharing how my own journey with clean rest has evolved and what it looks like for me now - both in business and in life. This is Part 4 of my 5-Part Clean Rest Series. There's one mindset shift every perfectionist entrepreneur needs to make about clean rest: Clean rest that doesn't feel good is still clean rest. Even when you're feeling bored, restless, agitated, or like you “should” be doing something more productive… it still counts. Clean rest isn't about always feeling peaceful, recharged or inspired. Sometimes it will feel that way. But other times, it'll feel uncomfortable. You might find yourself itching to check your emails or thinking about everything you “should” be doing instead. And that's completely normal. You're a human, not a machine. You're not supposed to feel happy or motivated 100% of the time. And if you're judging the quality of your rest based on how it feels, that perfectionist thinking is sneaking in through the back door – making you overthink your time off and work harder to “rest the right way.” This episode is a coaching call with PGSDer Jenna where we dive into all of this: what actually counts as clean rest, what doesn't, and why it's still valuable even when it doesn't feel perfect. We talk about the discomfort that can come up when you're learning to let yourself truly rest, and how clean rest supports you in working towards your business goals without burning yourself out. If you've been trying to “do rest right,” or only allow yourself time off when you've earned it, this episode is exactly what you need to hear. This is Part 3 of my 5-Part Clean Rest Series. In the previous episode of my clean rest series, I talked about how working from a to-do list makes it hard to get clean rest. So what should you do instead? Where does clean rest go in your calendar and how much of it do you need? And how do you rest when you've planned, so you honour your rest? I answer these questions and give you practical advice in today's episode. If you're wondering how to plan out your clean rest properly each week, listen in. This is Part 2 of my 5-Part Clean Rest Series. We perfectionists LOVE a good to-do list… But working from a to-do list makes it really challenging to get enough clean rest - even if you're making a real effort to have more work-life balance. And I share the five reasons why - and helpful examples for each reason - in this second episode of my clean rest series. I also talk about why there's never any time for rest and why you feel behind when you work from a to-do list. If you only get a break from your business when you're busy recovering from burnout, this clean rest series - and today's episode in particular - is going to be insanely helpful. This is Part 1 of my 5-Part Clean Rest Series. If you're sick of being behind in your business (even though you're doing ALL the things), this episode is for you. I explain what clean rest is (i.e. resting without guilt) and why it's essential for perfectionists. It may not feel like it, but clean rest will help you work better and build a better business (with less overwhelm, less procrastination and less burnout). You'll have plenty of clean rest scheduled in your calendar when you're planning properly as a perfectionist. All that clean rest won't be scary because you'll be so clear on what's important vs what isn't, when you work best and how to keep your plans workable so you never fall behind. It's tempting to look at others in our industry to see if we're doing things the right way, especially when others are more successful than us. We might look at what others are doing to decide what we plan to do in our business. There are times when following others' advice makes sense, yet there are also times when following our own intuition is better. In this episode, I want to talk to you about when to do things your own way, why it's safe to do so and how to productively compare yourself to others in your industry. Tune in today! If you've been avoiding a new or scary task simply because it doesn't have a deadline, you're not alone. As perfectionists, we struggle to follow through on tasks that feel unfamiliar or uncertain—especially when no one else is holding us accountable. The problem? These are often the exact tasks that will move your business forward. And the longer you put them off, the longer you stay stuck. In this episode, I'm sharing exactly why perfectionists procrastinate on non-urgent tasks and, more importantly, how to break free from this pattern so you can start honoring the deadlines you set for yourself—even when no one else is watching. In this episode, I'm sharing a powerful snippet from a PGSD coaching call where I coached my client, Arielle, on using Power Planning in a way that actually works for her, instead of against her. As perfectionists, we often don't realize how our own thinking is making us stuck. We give up right when we're about to see results. We tell ourselves we're not doing enough. We feel pressure to plan perfectly, and when we don't, we spiral into overwhelm and inaction. That's exactly what happened to Arielle. She wanted to use Power Planning but felt unsure whether she'd be able to “do it right.” And that hesitation was making planning feel like a struggle instead of a tool to help her. On this call, I coached Arielle through this mindset block so she could drop the pressure to plan perfectly and start using Power Planning to fully support herself no matter what comes up during the week. This is why coaching is so valuable for perfectionists. You don't need another to-do list or a new planner. You need to rewire the way you think about planning, productivity, and persistence so that you can actually follow through consistently without burning out. Inside Perfectionists Getting Shit Done (aka PGSD), you'll get access to weekly group coaching calls where you can get coached on the exact challenges that are keeping you stuck. You'll also watch other perfectionist entrepreneurs work through the same struggles you've been facing so you can learn, grow, and take action alongside them. The doors to PGSD close in less than 72 hours. Sign up now at samlaurabrown.com/pgsd. Find the full episode transcript and show notes at samlaurabrown.com/episode516. Lastly, thank you Arielle for giving me permission to share this call on the podcast. Enrollment for Perfectionists Getting Shit Done is closing in 72 hours. For most perfectionists, it feels reckless—or even harmful—to publish ‘imperfect' work unless a last-minute deadline forces our hand. Whether it's content, a client deliverable, a sales page, or a piece of art, we don't want to let go until it feels ready. And by ready, we mean perfect. But this obsession with making everything perfect is what's keeping you stuck. It's exhausting. It forces you to rely on pressure and deadlines just to take action. It stops you from getting enough practice to become truly great at what you do. And it's holding your business back from making sales, helping people, and growing the way it could. I've built a successful business because I learned how to emotionally allow myself to put imperfect work into the world. I let my ideas meet reality before they feel perfect. Without this skill, I wouldn't have nearly 500 podcast episodes and 3 million downloads. And this is something you can learn too. Inside this episode, I'm sharing exactly why you struggle to hit publish, the perfectionist thought errors making perfectly good work feel flawed, and the practical things you can do to start putting your work out into the world without second-guessing yourself. Getting out of your own way can't wait any longer. That's why I created Perfectionists Getting Shit Done (PGSD)—my productivity program for perfectionist entrepreneurs who are ready to stop overthinking, take consistent action, and build real momentum in their business without burning out. Our perfectionism often makes us think that the work we've produced isn't good enough and that we need to re-do it. This usually turns into us doing our work over again and again. And when we get into this habit, it's very disheartening to even approach a task so we end up procrastinating on it and putting it off. In this episode, I'm talking about why I wanted to re-record two podcast episodes and how I came to a decision as to whether or not to let myself do it. If you find yourself re-doing your work so it's good enough or constantly making little edits to anything you create then this episode will help. I'm excited to announce that you can work with me privately to make more sales in 2025 in an aligned, self-trusting way! Tune in to the episode to hear how we can work together, what Self-Trust Selling is (and isn't), and more. Are you only making sales sporadically, even though… ✔ You're posting pretty consistently, telling people about what you do and putting yourself out there a lot more than you used to be? ✔ You're smart, you genuinely want to help people and you've invested in sales and marketing programs to learn the right strategies? ✔ You get lots of great feedback from your clients and customers and you're pretty good at what you do (despite a healthy dose of imposter syndrome that tries to tell you otherwise). It's not your fault, it's your Perfectionism Handbrake. Your Perfectionism Handbrake isn't stopping you from taking action anymore. But it is stopping you from making as many sales as you could be. Your sales have plateaued and now you're ready for what's next. Self-Trust Selling is the answer. Self-Trust Selling combines the power of mindset work and sales strategy so that you can make more sales in 2025 in an aligned, self-trusting way. When you're Self-Trust Selling you will have your own unique Self-Trust Sales Strategy that's aligned with your Hidden Sales Strengths, your values and your business model so that selling feels easy and effortless - and brings in more sales than ever before. Self-Trust Selling is how I built my $2M coaching business without having to do anything that felt icky or that I didn't want to do. And how my clients have made more sales and broken through one revenue plateau after the next. After years of refining the Self-Trust Selling Process, the time has come to finally teach it. If you feel like the time you're spending working on your business isn't paying off, this is for you. And I'm not just going to tell you to ‘trust yourself more' or give you the specific strategy that worked for me and my business. I'm going to personally guide and support you through a simple step-by-step process that will have you releasing your Perfectionism Handbrake and creating your very own Self-Trust Sales Strategy so you can get out of your own way with selling. You will get more sales notifications on your phone, see more money in your bank account and get thank you emails from happy customers with a work schedule that works for you. Today, I want to make a case for doing bad work. As a perfectionist, I know this is not something you want to do. You want to do only your best work and have it reflect what you are capable of. But if you aren't willing to do bad work, you will never get good. It's essential to understand this concept as a perfectionist entrepreneur. I explain the concept in this episode, including sharing some examples from my own experiences with my business. I also discuss what happens when you do bad work and how you can support yourself in learning this new approach. In today's episode, I want to share a mistake I see a lot of perfectionists make in business (including myself). I've actually been coaching on this a lot inside my program, Perfectionists Getting Shit Done. And I want to bring it to your awareness, because if you are making this mistake, then it's going to be hard to grow the business the way you want to. And it's going to be hard to feel as fulfilled and satisfied as you want to, as a human being. Tune in to hear me talk about this common mistake, so that you can begin addressing it and change your experience in your business. If you feel called to do things your way, this one's for you. Find the full episode transcript and show notes at samlaurabrown.com/episode498. It's a chatty episode filled with personal stories, a loving kick in the pants and an invitation to step into who you know you're here to be.
