Jessica Unger, co-founder of Type One Community, discusses the mission of creating a space for diabetics to party and have fun while supporting each other. The community aims to break down the walls between diabetics and their friends and family, creating a safe and inclusive environment. In this episode, we have Alan Carter from PharmD, a pharmacist consultant with interests in medical research, pharmacy practice, and medication formulary management. We go over Alan's story and interest in insulin since he was young, the lack of understanding about insulin, and the impacts that it has on the systems that it works within. On the last episode of T1Dialogues we had a chance to talk to Laura about living with diabetes, training for a career in Health Sciences and hacking diabetes management through looping. Laura is a patient advocate living with type 1 diabetes since 2007. She is passionate about improving the lives of people living with diabetes by addressing different topics ranging from patient involvement to education, health policies and beyond. She is currently getting a Master's Degree in Health Sciences to deepen her knowledge of the healthcare system and complement her own experience navigating the system as a patient. In the future, she hopes to incorporate her studies and her lived experience to address the unmet needs of people living with diabetes. This month we're joined by Kate @katehall2043 who was diagnosed with type one diabetes at age 10. She took control from day one when she told the nurse that she was going to give herself her first-ever shot of insulin. Kate was never afraid of having diabetes and all that it entailed, but instead, she was afraid of it stopping her from doing what she loved most, sports. From that moment on, Kate turned fear into motivation and she knew that she wasn't going to let diabetes get in the way of anything. Kate did everything that she could from a young age to control her diabetes so that she could try to not only live a normal life but also accomplish her goal of someday becoming an Olympian.
