Four years ago, 16 year old Mekayla Bali left school at lunchtime and was never seen again. Her last known location was a local bus depot restaurant, and yet no ticket was purchased. In part one of this unsolved case, we are talking about Mekayla's introspective and shy nature in the lead up to her disappearance. We then touch on the events of the day and what clues were left for investigators to go on. Please note that the cover image here is an age progressed photograph of Mekalya. In light of George Floyd losing his life this week due to the Minneapolis PD, we wanted to use this platform to highlight black voices and practical information on protesting safely. White supremacy and institutional racism has been a problem for many years - we must all come together to change it. If you are unfamiliar with the BLM movement, or don't understand why people don't say "all lives matter", please read this: https://www.harpersbazaar.com/culture/politics/a27075028/black-lives-matter-explained/ If you are protesting, please review the safety information here: https://right-to-protest.org/protect-your-protest/ If you are financially able, please assist George Floyd's family with the future travel and legal costs they are sure to incur fighting for justice. Between 2010 and 2017, a series of men disappeared in Toronto, Ontario, Canada without a trace. The local gay and bisexual community was being targeted by a predator. The following year, authorities arrested Toronto resident Bruce McArthur in connection with the disappearances. McArthur was a well liked, friendly landscaper and occasional mall Santa. He is also now convicted in the killings of 8 men, something that has prompted police to reopen 25 cold murders cases dating back to the 70s. We covered this case in a two-part episode, which is episode 3 if you’d like to go back and hear the full details. His modus operandi? He would arrange to hook up with men, sometimes using dating apps, sometimes those already known to him. They were not seen again. To date, there have been two survivors of McArthur. Today we are lucky enough to speak with one of them. Sean Cribbin is joining us to talk about his experiences and opinions on the case. Also joining us is his good friend and documentary filmmaker, Bill Greer. Together, they are making a documentary movie called “Was I Next? The Sean Cribbin Story”. This case is a mystery that has captured the attention of the world, and provoked an urgency to solve it. Two young girls, from a small town, were having a fun day off school. They were smart, making a safety plan for their day out, and letting family know where they would be. They took their cell phones, and even captured evidence. And yet this didn’t matter, when they ran into an individual who had decided to take their lives. Although graphic details have not been released, this case does involve violence against children and we encourage listeners to exercise caution when listening. In December of 2017, three people from the Knoxville, TN area went missing. Almost on the same day. They were, according to family members, recent acquaintances. This case has had little attention from local, let alone national media, but the circumstances are very mysterious. We were sent some information on this one from a blogger, and decided to do some digging due to the lack of reporting out there. This is the case we’re calling the Knoxville Missing Three. “My homeschooling and discipline had good intentions. I’m sorry if I’ve done anything to cause them harm. I love my children and believe my children love me. ...I hope the very best for my children in the future.” These are the words spoken by David Turpin’s lawyer at his sentencing hearing. A man who, along with his wife Louise, held their 13 children captive and tortured them for years on end. The couple’s emotional and physical abuse of their own family makes for one of the most shocking cases in recent history, alongside the kidnapping of Jaycee Lee Dugard. The Turpin children, at the time of discovery, ranged from 2 to 29 years old. Their living conditions were inhumane. The list of neglect and abuses, almost endless. The beginning of the end for the couple came in January 2018, but how did things get to that point? This is the story of the Turpin family 13. Illegal dumping, also known as fly tipping, is when someone leaves unwanted items in a site that is not intended for waste. Today's case begins in 1957, at one of these well known dump sites in Philadelphia. Somebody dumped a box, and inside, a small boy. This began a race to discover his identity, what happened to him, and to find his murderer. This is the case of ‘America’s Unknown Child’, the boy in the box. The iconic aspiring actress who met a terrible end in Los Angeles, early 1947. When a housewife came across her body, she thought she was looking at a mannequin. Most of us are familiar with this crime, so we dug a little bit deeper to bring lesser known facts and some perspective on who Elizabeth was to those who knew her. Then we cover the usual suspects, and one pretty strong case that claims to have unmasked the killer. Des Moines, Iowa. November 12th of this year will bring Johnny Gosch’s 50th birthday. Yet he is, forever in our minds, a 12 year-old boy, fresh off his paper round. Johnny would usually deliver the local paper, the Des Moine Register, with his dad. But on Sunday September 5, 1982, he took the route alone. He never came home. Second installment - we're talking about the final victim, apprehension and whether people feel justice was done. This story is the manifestation of what we logically know: killers are hiding among us. It doesn't make it any easier for people to prepare for a case like this. When Paul Bernado and Karla Homolka met in the 80s, it was love at first sight. They were attractive, they were intelligent, they were well liked. They would also go on to take the lives of children to satisfy their urges. Police in Scarborough, Ontario struggled to catch this pair and bring them to justice, but it was difficult with such an unusual pair of killers. Our special guest in this episode is Lil's mom, Shannan. Growing up in the Scarborough area at the time, she was kind enough to talk to us about how the community felt and reacted to these crimes. Melbourne, 1942. The city was dealing with the effects of the Second World War, social upheaval and an influx of US soldiers stationed nearby. Locals were about to find out they had another problem to contend with - a serial killer. Women were found in the streets, their bodies abandoned in broad daylight, and every day the newspapers brought fresh updates alongside their articles about the bomb threat.
