In this episode of The SAF Podcast, Oscar sits down with Michelle Carter, Head of Transport at Innovate UK Business Connect, to explore the current state and future trajectory of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the UK. With over a decade of experience in SAF, Michelle offers a unique lens into the evolution of the UK's SAF ecosystem—from early-stage innovation to national mandates and public awareness. The conversation delves into the UK's position in the global SAF market, revealing that the country attracts just over 1% of global SAF investment, with a surprising 29% focused on power-to-liquid technology. Even more revealing is that domestic investment remains strikingly low compared to foreign capital pouring in from Europe and the United States. Michelle discusses the critical role of the UK SAF Clearing House in helping innovative technologies navigate regulatory landscapes and the importance of domestic versus imported production. The episode highlights interesting contrasts between UK and international investment patterns, particularly examining Spain's success with operational SAF facilities. Michelle explains how government policies like the SAF mandate and renewable certainty mechanism aim to stimulate growth in domestic production, targeting 2% sustainable jet fuel by 2025 and 10% by 2030.The conversation also covers international comparisons, such as Spain's refinery-led approach, and why the UK still imports most of its SAF. We delve into public perception, noting that 70% of UK adults still don't know what SAF is—highlighting the critical role of airlines, airports, and producers in improving consumer education. The regional variations in understanding—particularly how Wales demonstrated superior knowledge about waste-gas pathways due to local industry initiatives—highlight both the challenges and opportunities in consumer education. As Michelle notes, "If you communicate with the right narrative, people get it and they understand it."Whether you are a UK local or from another geography, understanding the challenges and work being done in the UK, and across the globe is critical to decarbonise aviation globally. Can someone be held responsible for a loved one's suicide? That's the unsettling question explored in the case of Mica Miller and her husband, Pastor John Paul Miller. The circumstances surrounding Mica's death, ruled a suicide, have raised allegations of coercive control—a form of emotional abuse that might carry legal implications. Drawing comparisons to the high-profile Michelle Carter case, this episode examines the complex intersections of law, morality, and psychological manipulation, with expert analysis from FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer. But the plot thickens. While investigating Miller's actions, the FBI's focus seems to have shifted from the alleged emotional abuse to serious financial crimes, including fraud and money laundering. Is Pastor Miller using religion as a smokescreen for egregious misconduct? With his unsettling charisma and deeply questionable behavior, his story is equal parts infuriating and fascinating. Will justice prevail, or will Miller continue to cloak his actions in a façade of spirituality? Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Cup of Justice creator Mandy Matney welcomes filmmaker Erin Lee Carr to discuss high-profile cases involving suicide, online harassment, and domestic violence. They share personal experiences and insights into the legal and ethical questions surrounding these issues, emphasizing the importance of empathy and accountability. They also debate the shortcomings of the system in addressing these problems and the need for a comprehensive approach. Throughout the conversation, they highlight the psychological toll of working in true crime and the importance of ethics and empathy in documentary filmmaking. Erin is amazingly brilliant and Mandy was a fan of Erin long before their worlds collided on the Murdaugh story in 2021. You may have heard of a deadline story about a project they are working on bringing to life… Erin has been a bright light in a dark world of true crime — an example of someone who can do good in the true crime world and succeed while sticking to their own ethics and values. Erin is also the author of a fabulous book: All that you leave behind: A Memoir... Click here to learn more. Like Liz and Mandy, Erin gravitates toward complicated true crime stories and tells them in a way that is truthful, victim-focused, and thought-provoking. In fact, Erin created and directed of Mandy's favorite documentaries of all time — Mommy Dead And Dearest and I Love You Now Die. Both stories were complex and the documentaries taught me to approach storytelling differently. In 2015, 17-year-old Michelle Carter was indicted on charges connected to the suicide of her 18-year-old boyfriend, Conrad Roy Jr III. In a controversial 2017 trial, a Taunton, Massachusetts jury found her guilty of involuntary manslaughter. A similar case occurred in May 2019, though it received much less publicity. Boston College students Inyoung You and her boyfriend Alexander Urtula had been dating for 18 months when he died by suicide. An investigation would uncover an abundance of abusive text messages from Inyoung in the months leading up to Alexander's death. The Carter and You cases involved problematic text messages that many argue are what drove both victims in these cases to end their lives. But where does free will end and the power of suggestion take over? Is it possible to brainwash someone into ending their own life? Let's see if we get any closer to answers as we explore Alexander Urtula's case in this episode of MURDERISH. Let's get social: Follow MURDERISH on Instagram & TikTok @MurderishPodcast. On July 12, 2014 the body of 18-year-old Conrad Roy was discovered inside of his pickup truck. The teenager, who had a history of depression, died by suicide. At first, detectives had no reason to suspect foul play in Conrad's death, but they confiscated his cell phone anyway. After extracting data, detectives found thousands of text messages between Conrad and his girlfriend, 17-year-old Michelle Carter. The problem was that Michelle had been encouraging Conrad to kill himself in the weeks, days and minutes leading up to his death. The tragic incident then turned into a homicide investigation with Michelle Carter as the primary target. The Commonwealth v. Michelle Carter case was the first of its kind in that the defendant was being charged with manslaughter due to the virtual presence she had during Conrad's death. The prosecution claimed that her words led to Conrad's death. In this episode, Jami walks listeners through the case and breaks down the docuseries I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth v. Conrad Roy died by suicide on a hot July night in 2014. But what is the true story behind “the girl from Plainville”, who faced a judge on manslaughter charges after texts reveal she might have had urged him to take his own life? Phelps digs into the social and legal aspects of this high-profile case, featured in a special Hulu series. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
I had the absolute pleasure of being on the podcast, True Crime Cat Lawyer last year. Elyse is a lawyer and it was very interesting hearing the legal aspects of this case. We discussed the case of Michelle Carter and Conrad Roy.Conrad Roy was 18 and his girlfriend, Michelle Carter, was 17 in 2014. Conrad struggled with his mental health for years, attempting to take his life in the past but he would always find a way to get help before it was too late. He had also been on psychiatric medications. Michelle was extremely manipulative with possible mental health issues of her own. Even though they only lived 30 minutes away from each other, they never spent time together in person. Michelle convinced him over texts, e-mails, and phone calls to take his own life.Grab your tickets to the Reverie True Crime virtual live show by CLICKING HERE!Date: Sunday, February 12thTime: 1pm PST • 3pm CST • 4pm ESTTrue Crime Cat Lawyer:INSTAGRAM: @truecrimecatlawyerTWITTER: @truecrimecatlawWEBSITE: truecrimecatlawyer.comFACEBOOK: facebook.com/truecrimecatlawyerReverie True Crime:INSTAGRAM: @reverietruecrimeTWITTER: @reveriecrimepodFACEBOOK: facebook.com/reverietruecrimeTUMBLR: @reverietruecrimeWEBSITE: reverietruecrime.wix.com/podcastSourceshttps://www.aetv.com/real-crime/michelle-carter-conrad-royhttps://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2020/01/23/us/michelle-carter-text-suicide-release/index.htmlhttps://www.cnn.com/2017/06/08/opinions/massachusetts-manslaughter-opinion-cevallos/index.htmlhttps://www.boston25news.com/news/all-the-text-messages-between-michelle-carter-and-conrad-roy-they-day-he-died/532942907/?outputType=amphttps://www.buzzfeednews.com/amphtml/tasneemnashrulla/michelle-carter-prison-release-texting-suicidehttps://law.northeastern.edu/northeastern-law-team-takes-the-lead-in-crafting-and-advocating-for-conrads-law/https://people.com/crime/conrad-roys-mom-on-michelle-carters-early-release-in-suicide-text-case-i-dont-think-about-her/?amp=truehttps://abcnews.go.com/amp/US/conrads-law-named-teen-died-texting-suicide-case/story?id=64532207https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/takeaway/segments/words-weapons-legal-questions-arise-texting-suicide-casehttp://jaapl.org/content/46/4/521https://www.lexisnexis.com/community/amp-casebrief/casebrief-commonwealth-v-carterhttps://www.repository.law.indiana.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1125&context=ijlsehttps://harvardlawreview.org/2018/01/commonwealth-v-carter/https://law.stanford.edu/press/death-text-michelle-carter-case-will-impact-free-speech/https://scholarship.law.ufl.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1917&context=facultypubhttps://www.supremecourt.gov/DocketPDF/19/19-62/107409/20190708155645613_Michelle%20Carter%20Appendix%20July%208%202019%20EFile.pdfhttp://www.bu.edu/bulawreview/files/2018/10/LAPALME.pdfhttps://abovethelaw.com/2019/12/the-law-of-personal-responsibility-and-the-illusion-of-free-will/?amp=1https://www.law.georgetown.edu/american-criminal-law-review/wp-content/uploads/sites/15/2019/01/56-1-The-Puzzle-of-Inciting-Suicide.pdfhttps://www.masslive.com/news/2017/06/michelle_carter_trial_cross_ex.htmlhttps://lawandcrime.com/opinion/no-michelle-carter-didnt-actually-kill-conrad-roy-iii-but-the-court-was-right-to-uphold-her-sentence/https://abovethelaw.com/2019/07/how-do-we-measure-the-influence-of-rhetoric-on-action/https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2696856https://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/6185088/7-8-19-Michelle-Carter-SCOTUS-Petition.pdfhttps://abovethelaw.com/2019/02/the-life-and-death-power-of-speech/https://www.bostonherald.com/2019/02/08/michelle-carters-attorney-vows-this-legal-battle-is-not-over/https://www.abajournal.com/news/article/woman_is_sentenced_for_encouraging_her_boyfriends_suicidehttps://abovethelaw.com/2017/06/being-a-bitch-is-now-a-criminal-offense-apparently/https://www.abajournal.com/news/article/texts_urging_suicide_a_top_massachusetts_court_must_decidehttps://www.supremecourt.gov/DocketPDF/19/19-62/97560/20190424171515431_Commonwealth%20v.%20Carter_%20481%20Mass.%20352.pdf https://www.lexisnexis.com/community/amp-casebrief/casebrief-commonwealth-v-carterhttps://harvardlawreview.org/2018/01/commonwealth-v-carter/ https://law.northeastern.edu/northeastern-law-team-takes-the-lead-in-crafting-and-advocating-for-conrads-law/

Check us out: Visit Murderish.com for more info about the show and Creator/Host, Jami.
