By Davy Crockett The 1977 Western States 100 Andy Gonzales In 1977, Wendell T. Robie (1895-1984), the president of the Western States Trail Foundation and the director of the Western States Trail Ride (Tevis Cup), decided that it was time to add a runner division to his famous Ride. He had previously helped seven soldiers successfully complete the course on foot in 1972 (See Forgotten First Finishers), the first to do so, and had been pleased that Gordy Ainsleigh had been the first to finish the trail in under 24-hours in 1974. (See Episode 66). In addition, dozens of people had backpacked the trail since then, and a couple others had tried to run the course solo during the Ride. Robie believed it was time to organize a foot race on "his trail" for the first time. This first Western States 100 in 1977 was hastily organized by riders, not runners. There was no consultation with the existing well-established ultrarunning sport at that time. Practices were put in place that mostly mirrored the endurance horse sport such as mandatory medical checks. The event would be held with nearly 200 riders and horses also competing on the course at the same time as the runners. The day would turn out to be perhaps the hottest ever for the historic race. The risks were extremely high for this small rookie running race staff and some rather naïve runners. Who were the runners who turned out for this historic first race? Did they have the experience to finish or just survive? Race Organization Gordy Ainsleigh On Robie's race staff was Gordy Ainsleigh, of nearby Meadow Vista, California. He was perhaps the most experienced runner in the bunch with some cross-country running experience. He had also run in some Ride & Tie events and of course had run the course solo three years earlier. Ainsleigh had hoped to get the race director job from Robie and talked about putting in a qualifier requirement that the runners had to have completed a marathon in at most 3:15. He said, “We don’t want anyone who isn’t a good runner.” Thankfully, that requirement was not put in place. Ainsleigh did not have the organizational skills to put together a race and was not the race founder. Robie was the man in charge for the 1977 race and gave the race director job to Curt Sproul. Curt Sproul Curtis Cutter Sproul (1948-), of Weimer, California, originally from Pebble Beach, was designated by Robie as the 1977 Western States 100 manager, assisted by his wife, Marion "Mo" Orrick Sproul (1951-). Curt Sproul was an experienced endurance rider and a young attorney. He was the grandson of Robert Gordon Sproul (1891-1975) who was the first system-wide President of the University of California system and president of UC Berkeley. Mo and Curt Sproul in 1972 Curt Sproul, born into privilege, received his love for the outdoors from his parents. His father was also an attorney, an outdoors enthusiast and environmentalist, who frequently took his family on trips to Yosemite National Park and camping trips to Wyoming. His mother had once climbed to Everest Base Camp. Sproul's wife, Mo, was originally from San Francisco. Her father was an attorney and the president of the San Francisco Opera Association. The Sprouls met and married when both attending UC Berkley. They both would become very important contributors toward the founding and growth of Western States 100. Race Planning The first year, in 1977, the race was called the “Western States National Endurance Run.” Robie ordered a “mammoth” three-foot silver cup trophy on a black marble base, to be a perpetual trophy for the winning runner. It became named the “Wendell Robie Cup” engraved with “Worth Marks the Man and Woman.” Those who finished in 24-hours would receive a belt buckle with an etching of the figure of Hermes, messenger of the gods. Robie said he hoped that the race that year would give Auburn “a name among the physical endurance enthusiasts.” He further observed,

(BTW, Inauguration Day changed from March to January in 1937.) This meet-up happens on the Sabian symbol, “A woman of Samaria,” a biblical story that speaks of reaching out to someone with different beliefs than you. . 11:58 – ** MOONWATCH! ** Also on Inauguration Day, we have a powerful First Quarter Moon at 1.02 Taurus (Jan. 20) on the symbol, “An electrical storm.” The Sun sits in Aquarius, “An unexpected thunderstorm” – two evocative symbols with a lot of tense energy in the chart. . 14:15 – Mars, at 7.59 Taurus, squares Jupiter in Aquarius (Jan. 22). Are we pushing the limits too much? This is the last of 3 opening squares in a cycle that began March 20 (Episode 17, Saturn in Aquarius: All in This Together). The other 2 squares were Aug. 4 (Episode 37, Full Moon in Aquarius & Many Happy (Solar) Returns) and Oct. 18 (Episode 52, A Scorpio Season of Long Shadows & Fellowship). . 17:09 – The Sun gets squished into a container as it meets Saturn at 4.20 Aquarius (Jan. 23) on the Sabian symbol, “A council of ancestors.” Who are people in your life that have some wisdom to offer you? . 20:34 – Helpful info to cope with stress, incoming: a free 8-week Science of Happiness course from UC-Berkeley that offers practical tips on living a meaningful life, articles on 7 Ways to Stop Negative Thoughts & 10 Coping Strategies for Anxiety, and some useful podcast episodes from Brene Brown & the Science of Happiness. (FYI, we don’t get any $$ from sharing this; just take them if they feel right to you!) . 20:53 – April’s quote of the week, “We don’t grow wise just because we grow old.” Perhaps the Sun/Saturn aspect is urging us to try to gain wisdom this week, even in difficult times. Who is your “council of ancestors” that you feel a connection to, and who can you learn from, regardless of age? . 23:28 – Thanks, podpals! On today's show, Chong and Dan continue their discussion on Donald Trump. In the previous episode, we tried in good faith to understand Trump and what he represents to his supporters. In this episode, we lay our cards on the table and explain why we think Trump is bad, and why we think it is a good thing that Trump lost his bid for re-election.Even as we take a more critical view, we try to do this as fairly as possible - first, by laying out the facts of what happened during Trump’s presidency and his observable behaviours; and second, by giving our interpretation and opinion of the facts.(This is Part II of a longer discussion. On today's show, Chong and Dan are unleashed. Using the 2020 US election as a launching point, we finally get to the topic that has dominated political discussion and general consciousness over the past four years - Donald Trump. We start by recapping what happened in the election and how to interpret the results. We then address the question that has been on everyone’s minds: “What’s the deal with Donald Trump?” Despite his apparent flaws, Trump is on track to win 10 million more votes in 2020 compared to 2016.We think there is a simple, comforting lie and a complex, uncomfortable truth. With great trepidation and in good faith, we delve into the latter in order to better understand Trump and his supporters.(This is Part I of a longer discussion. See Episode 14 for Part II. How to Explode Engagement on Instagram Episode #11 https://ruthiegray.mom/explode-engagement-on-instagram/ How to maintain consistent story posting Q: Having trouble with consistency, losing momentum when I doubt, pushing through and starting again. A. Here's the thing about how to use reels and stories - you don't have to be rigid or have a certain kind of strategy at the beginning, especially. Start sharing your life. Think of a few things that you can share in stories: morning coffee ground coffee beans every morning morning walk Flowers and foliage porch swing Your life Nothing uncomfortable or too private See Episode #11 on Exploding Engagement in stories Use Engagement Stickers, quizzes, questions, etc. 2-3 stories per day; 1-3 frames (beginning, middle, and end) So just get in the habit of sharing your life, not tons and not anything that you wouldn't be comfortable with sharing, but share your life and then start using what I advised in podcast 11 about exploding engagement in stories is to use stickers three times a week, like poll stickers, like polls or questions or quizzes, ask questions, make it about them. Start sharing even if it's only one clip a day, just do one clip a day. Wow. And people start to really relate to you. My best advice is to do two to three stories a day. How long should a story be? Really a story is one to three frames. Stories have a beginning, a middle and an end, and don't forget that you can share your feed posts to stories as well. And then expand on it. So if your feed post is a quote, then talk more about the quote, like show your face for a minute or have your camera turned around on your subject. Flowers or something while you talk or whatever, maybe it's a book. So it really doesn't have to be hard. We just need to start being consistent. And Pat from breakthrough homeschooling. She said, consistency is tough. There's a life thing that gets in the way. So, life does get in the way, but y'all. Think about it, you know, that I just lost my dad in July for six weeks. I was in and out of hospitals, but sharing stories; pictures of my needle point, pictures of the hospital. And actually talking sometimes about what was going on and people were invested in that story because I was sharing my life. So many people thanked me for being transparent. They said, "thank you for sharing with your Insta fam", . And so those are just practical, easy ways. If life gets in the way, share the life, that's in the way. That's the way to do it. Just start making it a priority. And, everybody has to start at ground zero. Everybody has to start somewhere. So you just start, you know, you just start and then you be consistent. Just take off in stories and just start sharing your life sharing everyday stuff. How to use reels and stories (and why) Q: What’s the point of 15 second reels? More discoverability More relatability Use to entertain, educate, or encourage Use as an announcement Reels are only 15 seconds. 3 components in stories: 1) Story, which is taped video or it can just be as stale, stagnant picture If you video in that story, it can only be 15 seconds. 2) Live video lives in stories if you go on live, make it 15 to 30 minutes Turn into an IGTV and make a preview in feed, which I highly recommend. 3) Reels.

(And since we recorded this, our friends on the East Coast are up against some scary hurricanes, so all be well!) . 09:51 – The Libra season highlights relating. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, it heralds the season when we celebrate the harvest, our ancestors, and thanksgiving. Farmer’s Almanac reminds us that the word equinox comes from the Latin for “equal” and “night.” At the equinoxes we have roughly equal day and night hours. It’s the season that emphasizes balance – equilibrium - in relationships and all matters. . 12:25 – Next episode: Jen’s solar return!! . 12:37 – Mercury enters the rocky part of its journey through Libra this week with a square to Saturn Sep. 23 at 3:38 am PDT, and tension between collaboration and top-down authority. This aspect continues a Mercury/Saturn cycle that began on Jan. 12, 2020, and is NOT, in fact, an opening square from Mercury to Saturn… . 15:31 - … as pointed out by Encyclopedia Braun, it is a closing square! Oops! But there is much worthwhile food for thought in here, anyway, so we left it all in. Look at April, growing as a person! . 15:55 – This is the first of 3 closing squares from Mercury to Saturn. The others are on November 1 (Mercury Rx) and November 6. . 16:08 – What is the difference between an opening and closing square? One urges us to simply action, the other prescribes reflection and action that’s based on experience. Look to the discussion of First Quarter and Last Quarter lunar phases in Episode 34, The 8 Lunar Phases: Have Them With a Salad, for helpful insights. . 17:43 – Mercury is now in the shadow period (September 23) of its next retrograde period (Oct. 14-Nov. 3), and Saturn is slowing to turn direct (Sep. 29) - an intractable-sounding scenario. As always, review Ep. 12: Mercury Retrograde: Where are my Pants? . 18:21 – The current cozy relationship between the Sun and Venus prompts an accidental discussion of mutual reception. Look back to Episode 4 | The Capricorn Solstice is Frequently Sunny in Minneapolis, for a protracted discussion of this condition in which two planets are in the sign ruled by the other. . 19:37 – Mercury opposes Mars (Sep 24 3:54 pm PDT), the halfway point of a cycle that began with Mercury conjoined Mars in Virgo on June 18, July 8, and Sep. 3, 2019. How are you expressing ambition, anger, assertiveness in communication? Do you find there’s a pattern in how you’re giving voice to Mars? . 22:27 - Mercury and Mars are in a t-square with Jupiter/Saturn/Pluto in Capricorn. The missing cardinal sign? Cancer, which prefers to hold its cards close to its chest. It’s always okay to pause and process your feelings before speaking. . 24:29 – Mercury enters Scorpio (Sep. 27 12:41 am PDT) marks a shift away from diplomacy and toward deeper conversations. Mercury will retrograde in this sign (Oct. 14-Nov. 3), stationing direct on the date of the U.S. presidential election, summoning memories of election day 2000 when Mercury was also stationing direct. Hanging chads, anyone? . 25:31 – In Episode 12, Mercury Retrograde: Where are My Pants?, we discussed Mercury being retrograde in water signs this year. Mercury in Scorpio has little patience for small talk – it wants real talk. While Mercury is in the sleuthing sign (through Dec. 1), dig deep. 28:21 – ** MOONWATCH ** Mercury in Scorpio brings a Dark Shadows feel to our introduction of the First Quarter Moon at 1.29 Capricorn (Sep. 23 at 6:55 pm PDT). Time to take action on something conceived at the Dec 25/26, 2019 Solar Eclipse. (See Episode 5, Unboxing Eclipses.) The Sabian symbols, “Three stained-glass windows, one damaged by bombardment”, and “The light of the 6th race transmuted to the 7th”, talk about “seeing the light,” brightening situations, and changing forms. Today I’m talking about what thriving is! What the definitions of it are, how it has evolved over time for me and what it can mean for you. Key Points from this Episode: Thriving used to be this desperate wish that I hoped was possible for me during motherhood. Thriving is all about growing. Think about plants, if they are growing and doing well, we often call it thriving. When things are going well, if you are thriving, you are preparing for future challenges. (Ex: building routines, making freezer meals) Life is not split up into either you are thriving because things are going well or you're surviving and miserable because things aren't going well. Having a solid base of the 3 pillars (See Episode 115) gives you the space to live your personal mission in this life. Distraction and overwhelm can come easily without the base of the pillars. The goal is to take the fear out of that time when you are not thriving. Remember to have friends in motherhood! (See Episode 97 and Episode 98)

17 Ways to Market Yourself. Yes, I said market yourself. As we move through the four roles of your Company of One model (See Episode 174: Grow Your Own Company of One) we are now focused on your CMO or your Chief Marketing Officer. You might notice some overlap - which is normal. The last few episodes dealt with how to become better at operations - or your COO role. As you might expect - operations and market overlap in many places. But the key focus areas are different: The COO is focused on delivering value to the customer. The CMO is focused on communicating value to the customer - how it can or how it was delivered. So today we will focus on the 17 Ways to Market Yourself - a quick and powerful list to help you get amazing results. 17 Ways to Market Yourself 1. Define your expertise. Who do you help, how, and what benefit do they get from your help? For example, ”I help technology professionals connect their tech experience to their personal brand and company so they can maximize their income and growth while maintaining or growing their personal brand.” 2. Update your LinkedIn for the desired action. When someone visits your LinkedIn profile, what do you want them to do? For help, review profiles of authorities in your field. 3. Define your customers and what they value. Meet with them periodically to get feedback. Ask them "How am I doing?” and “What is your biggest struggle?” 4. Communicate frequently (at least every 30 days) to your customers. What do they value? Provide them feedback. Here is what has happened. Use bullet points so it can be scanned easily. 5. Dress for success. Look in the mirror, then look at the leaders in your company and in your field. What is different? What do you need to fix? Be open to ask others for help. The key is that you are communicating through your dress. What are you communicating? 6. Straighten up. Check your posture. Your posture impacts how others see you, how you sound, and how you feel. SMALL changes can create a big impact. Get help if needed. 7. Watch your language. Foul language is not accepted in any field. Sure - there are a FEW exceptions – but do not count on you being one of them. No one wants to hear negativity. It will block opportunities. No one will ever hire a person just because they speak in expletives, but plenty will not hire the one that does. This is also true for ANY negative language. 8. Keep it short. Learn to answer succinctly. When asked a question, do not ramble. A good approach is “Here are 3 ways to look at this …” And of course, be ready for questions that come often or you know are coming. 9. Smile. Communicates tons. Fake it if you have to. A smile communicates confidence. Confidence communicates power. 10. Keep your cool. Breath deep, smile, relax, even if you have to fake it at stressful times. Losing your cool can be a powerful tool if used correctly, but it more often communicates weakness. 11. Network. Who are the key influencers in your field? Make a list of the top 10-30 people and reach out to them in some way every 90 days. a. Let them know you saw their ad or heard others talking about them in a great way. Everyone loves good feedback. b. Share information about their interests. c. Introduce them to someone - a referral. d. Ask them an easy question. e. Send them a gift. f. Send a thank-you note. 12. Go above and beyond in your service. Going the extra mile always gets you noticed. When asked “How?” show them. When asked "Why?" take the time to explain. Give them more than they asked for in a way that is meaningful to them. For example, when asked how to do something on a computer, provide a short video showing them HOW. Take a photo. Write up a short report with details when asked a question. Make it EASIER for them to use - instead of the excel report - summarize key points in the email. 13. Find your people and how to hang out with them. How do you know your people?
This is for those who have been tracking for a while and are nailing your numbers. We discuss the benefits of meal timing, volume foods, smart food swaps, tracking as you go and low/ high days. These are the small 10 percenters that can enhance your results, performance and energy, but must only be considered once the fundamentals of macro tracking are met. See Episode 12. As you see the differing opinions and disagreements going on right now, are you starting to lose your faith in humanity a bit? In today’s episode, we’ll talk about a few practical things you can do to both take care of yourself AND love other people well, even when we don’t agree.Show Notes:Gather with your people. (See Episode 22: How to Find and Develop Friendships)Listen more than you speak. (James 1:19)Know when to step away from it all.Remember that our hope is not in people, but in Jesus alone. This week’s practice:This week, take an honest look at how you’re feeling about other people, and pick at least one of these ideas to help you restore your faith in humanity. Have a conversation with a friend who is safe and loves you. Approach conversations with a desire to listen; ask questions and seek to understand. Maybe you choose a day to stay off of all social media, or you unfollow a few people. And most importantly, draw near to Jesus so he can remind you that HE is our only hope.More Resources:For more resources to help you connect with God in the chaos of motherhood, visit http://www.lindsaysterchi.com/free/. Become Better at Your Job? I know that you are likely thinking, "I am already good at my job!" I hope that is true. But, can you become better at your job? I think we all know the answer is yes - we can always be better. Why should you? If you can become better at your job you will have greater work satisfaction, improve your relationships with your coworkers, be more productive, impress your leaders, and grow your income. If nothing else caught your eye - I hope the idea of increasing your income did. Is this selfish thinking? Sure. But the whole point of working is for income - so the idea of maximizing income should be part of your mission. Since you are a Company of One, you should operate like one and look for ways to grow profit. (See Episode 174) Only Two Ways to Make More Money I forget where I heard it, but I remember someone telling me that there were only two ways to make more money. To work more hours. To become more valuable. If you are paid by the hour, working more hours will do the trick. But this is not scalable. But, to become more valuable, you can then charge more for your time. And it is the becoming more valuable part that we need to focus on today. Become Better at Your Job - The Company of One Perspective Before we dive into the details, I just want to make sure our thinking is right. If you tuned into episode 174, you would know all Companies have four major roles: operations, marketing, research, and finance. The part of operations is where we do our job. It is the role we are most familiar with. However, I am going to say that I bet you have left money on the table. Your COO (Chief Operations Officer) has more he or she can do to make money flow. (Yes - you are your own COO - so I am talking about you.) Your job in operations is to serve the customer well. And, your customer is your boss, your boss's boss, your coworkers, etc. (See Ep 176 about knowing your customer better.) Tune in to what your customer needs from you. You will learn a lot by simply asking and listening. What is important to your customer? And remember, this is a personal thing. If you change bosses, then you will likely end up with a new set of priorities. Your job should do one of two things: 1) make money or 2) save money - never forget it. Accountants call it overhead - expenses that do not directly result in revenue. Always strive to add value. Top of the line expenses is those costs that are part of the building or delivering products and services which drive revenue. Are you part of them? Focus on your strengths and doing what you love. Too often, we get caught up trying to be like the other guy. Instead, focus on where you are strong. Align your work, the best you can, with your strengths. You will do better, be more recognized, and grow your income faster. Reduce the drama. Drama, caused by internal bickering, personal life getting in the way of work, or other things that take the eye off the ball, will drain those you serve. Leave it at home and deal swiftly with the drama at work. Stop stealing from your employers. Dead end meetings. Killing time. Lack of clarity to what you are doing today. Check out Productivity at Work | Quit Stealing From Your Employers Communicate. Do not assume anyone knows what you are doing or why. Help your customers by letting them know what is going on. Between 2010 and 2017, a series of men disappeared in Toronto, Ontario, Canada without a trace. The local gay and bisexual community was being targeted by a predator. The following year, authorities arrested Toronto resident Bruce McArthur in connection with the disappearances. McArthur was a well liked, friendly landscaper and occasional mall Santa. He is also now convicted in the killings of 8 men, something that has prompted police to reopen 25 cold murders cases dating back to the 70s. We covered this case in a two-part episode, which is episode 3 if you’d like to go back and hear the full details. His modus operandi? He would arrange to hook up with men, sometimes using dating apps, sometimes those already known to him. They were not seen again. To date, there have been two survivors of McArthur. Today we are lucky enough to speak with one of them. Sean Cribbin is joining us to talk about his experiences and opinions on the case. Also joining us is his good friend and documentary filmmaker, Bill Greer. Together, they are making a documentary movie called “Was I Next? The Sean Cribbin Story”. Feisty Mars enters Aquarius this week and teams up with Saturn to start the work of serious social change. Venus in Gemini downloads some new eBooks, the First Quarter Moon in Cancer prompts our salute to The Fonz, and Mercury meets The Fog (Neptune). And Jupiter makes the first in a series of aspects to Pluto that promises to be...interesting. Plus: April & Jen pull into Conjunction Junction (what's your function?) and learn how August-born April got her name. While Venus in Gemini is at the bookstore for you, have her pick up April’s book, Astrological Transits! Can you spare a dollar or ten to support the BSA podcast? April & Jen thank you! Episode links: 00:53 – April shows off her sultry, good-cup-of-coffee (allergy attack?) voice. 02:15 – Mars leaves Capricorn and enters Aquarius' less grim neighborhood on March 30. (Read all about Saturn entering Aquarius here.) In a preview of December's coming attractions, we contemplate collectivism and what we want to create together. 04:05 – To hear techniques for staying in the moment, listen to Episode 18 (and take a gander at Episode 18’s helpful links/resources for dealing with stress while you’re at it). 05:42 – To hear more about the sign of Aquarius and Charlie Brown's evocative shirt, listen to Episode 9 (It’s Aquarius Season, Charlie Brown). 06:00 – The gas pedal meets the brakes as Mars immediately joins up with Saturn at 1° Aquarius on March 31. April reports from the trenches of Mars transiting her personal Saturn on the day we record this episode. Spoiler: It is aggravating. A-g-g-r-a-v-a-t-i-n-g. 09:27 – In December, Jupiter and Saturn will meet on the Sabian symbol 1 Aquarius, “An old adobe mission.” What will we take from the past into the future? 12:10 – At year's end, Jupiter and Saturn will begin new 20-, 200-, and 800-year cycles. An explanation of sorts about what the heck that means. 14:05 – Schoolhouse Rock offers another way to view conjunctions! 14:36 – ** Moonwatch**! This week we’re a-okay with a First Quarter Moon at 12°9’ Cancer on April 1! (And April's heard all the wisecracks you could possibly throw her way on that day, so just settle down.) 15:31 – How did April get her name? 16:03 – …Um, where were we? Right - contemplating the Moon's Sabian symbol, “One hand slightly flexed with a prominent thumb.” (The Fonz likes this one.) The Sun's symbol is, “An unsuccessful bomb explosion.” Maybe things aren’t as bad as we expected? 19:00 – Here’s the link to sign up for the Big Sky Astrology newsletter. Each month you will receive a free “Working with the Moon” e-book! For real. 19:22 – On April 3, Mercury and Neptune sit down at “A table set for an evening meal.” (See Episode 16 for more on that Sabian symbol.) Jen shares her family's experiment with communal meals at a virtual table. 21:56 – Venus grabs her writing materials and office supplies to sit for a spell in Gemini (April 3). She and Saturn take a ride on a “A glass-bottomed boat.” Peer into the depths, and be sure to grab a copy of April’s book, Astrological Transits, which would be an ideal way to learn right now. (Way back in Episode 1, Venus was our first topic, ever, because nobody puts Venus in the corner!) 25:25 – Venus entering an air sign is a cue to try some tactile learning, or learn via a physical activity. 26:52 – Jupiter and Pluto meet for the first of three times this year, at 25° Capricorn (April 4). Societal changes both great and small are the work of this combination. Here is Dana Gerhardt’s article on previous conjunctions of Jupiter/Pluto, which feature a history of pandemics. Here is Ray Merriman’s latest financial astrology column. 30:21 – You often can’t start something new without something else ending. To hear April & Jen’s first conversation about life cycles, head over to Episode 7 (Saturn & Pluto Go to The Repair Shop), and tune in to one of Jen’s favorite pieces of BSA podcast conversation, ever. 31:49 – Things are intense right now on planet Earth, and a sense of humor comes in handy. Yes, life is serious. And yes, it’s okay to laugh sometimes. 32:47 – The show goes on! To help April & Jen keep the lights on, make a contribution of any amount, which would be supremely awesome! To help spread the word, subscribe and give the BSA podcast a 5-star review on Apple Podcasts, or a big Fonzie-style thumbs-up wherever you listen. Last but not least, to help April & Jen feel toasty warm, write them a positive review on the BSA pod page. Thanks, friends!

In the mid-1800s, the isolation of the Sourlands region made it a refuge for some, and was a place where black people could own land and establish their own communities. (See Episode 2) But the isolation also meant that the mountains could be lawless. Historian Jim Davidson, in his talk, "The Dark Side of the Sourlands" discusses the mayhem, murder, and disappearances that made this region "New Jersey's Bermuda Triangle."
Welcome to AiArthritis Voices 360. This episode join your host, Tiffany Westrich-Robertson, as she and co-host Danielle Dass discuss discrimination against disabled people in the workplace. They dig into workplace accommodations, what to do if you are a victim of discrimination at work, and the connection between ableism and poor treatment of disabled employees. They also touch on how both delayed diagnosis and shifting identities can contribute to challenges in finding a work environment right for you. If you are a victim of workplace discrimination, a working person living with chronic illness, or a supervisor of other employees, this is an important episode for you! Supervisors may hope that an employee will leave voluntarily if the workplace becomes very hostile30:10 - The idea that accommodating a disabled employee is “unfair” to others is a pervasive theme in the stories received from other patients31:00 - Supervisors or co-workers see symptoms of invisible illness and interpret it as laziness or incompetence due to internalized ableism 32:52 - A workplace accommodation is any change in the working environment that allows a person with limitations in their abilities to complete their essential duties 33:50 - Most people don’t have much experience with workplace accommodations and so are not sure how to accommodate specific challenges 34:22 - Employees must be able to perform their essential job duties 35:43 - Many people have difficulty separating the essential job duty from the way it is traditionally accomplished and so may incorrectly assume disabled people cannot perform those duties36:18 - Internalized ableism is a fear of becoming or being disabled. See Episode 14 for more information about internalized ableism.37:37 - Because people confused the objective and the method for accomplishing the objective, employers will list functions as “essential duties” that actually are not essential and can be accommodated. This needs to be addressed to make more jobs accessible to disabled people.39:01 - If employers are listing essential duties incorrectly, they can discriminate against disabled employees without repercussion39:40 - Often HR specialists who work in compliance roles have little to no experience or training in disability issues or patient advocacy42:27 - EULAR was instrumental in getting social responsibility laws passed in Europe to prohibit workplace discrimination against patients with rheumatic disease specifically43:01 - Accommodations requested by employees must be “reasonable” 43:44 - ARC Canada provided information on Canadian Law which said that accommodations are unreasonable if they endanger other people or compromise the organization’s financial viability44:33 - According to the ADA in the US, reasonable accommodations are those which do not impose an “undue hardship” on the employer, which is commonly considered to be any significant difficulty or expense 45:07 - Whether an accommodation imposes an undue hardship is largely left up to employers to decide with very little oversight47:33 - People are afraid to file complaints over accommodations because they fear retaliation 49:00 - Most victims of workplace discrimination cannot pursue lawsuits against their employer because they lack the financial resources to retain legal representation50:40 - The average age of onset of AiArthritis diseases is 20-40, which is right in the prime of a person’s career usually52:00 - Patients would benefit from resources that provide guidance about specific accommodations or legal aid 52:37 - Anyone experiencing discrimination or who is even concerned about potential discrimination should document everything that might be relevant to their story53:50 - A physical record of documentation enables victims to have specific conversations with people who may be able to help them 54:49 - Highlighting victim’s stories to appeal to the public about the current state of discrimination in the workplace of disabled people is one of the most important things we can do as a community to change the state of things55:29 - Victims may remain silent about their discrimination out of a sense of embarrassment 56:33 - If you are a victim of discrimination, you are not alone 57:10 - If you are a victim, the best thing you can do for yourself is to talk to someone about your experience58:04 - People with disabilities are valuable and our ability to contribute to society should not be stunted by prejudice58:37 - Disabled people who are given an opportunity to work with their talents can do amazing things58:44 - If you have been the victim of workplace discrimination, please share your story with us on social media @IfAiArthritis on all platforms or via email to podcast@aiarthritis.org
We’ve had a raft of questions submitted to the show from a DIY musician who is just starting out so we’ve dedicated this week’s show to answering them. What should you do if you’ve released too much material too soon? What’s the best non music content to help grow your brand? Can Spotify For Artists help you to grow your audience? Should you continue to market old music or crack on and only market your new stuff. All these questions get answered and much, much and more. This episode continues the series following the House impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump, focusing on the opening statements from witness testimony before the House Intelligence Committee. Dr. Fiona Hill testified in the morning of Nov. 21, 2019, before the House Intelligence Committee. Dr. Hill is the former National Security Council senior director for Europe and Russia. She was Lt. Col. Vindman's supervisor. See Episode 12 for Col. Vindman's testimony. She didn't provide an opening statement for her Nov. 8 deposition, so while her remarks here are short, this is a substantive update.
Why is the Church referred to as a "She?" What's going on with the JPII Institute in Rome? My health makes it difficult for my husband and I to have marital relations, and I'm concerned. What should I do? Ask Christopher West is a weekly podcast in which Theology of the Body Institute Director Christopher West and his beloved wife Wendy share their humor and wisdom, answering questions about marriage, relationships, life, and the Catholic faith, all in light of John Paul II’s beautiful teachings on the Theology of the Body. Love the podcast? Become a patron (https://community.theologyofthebody.com) of the TOB Institute! This week’s questions: Q1: Why is the church always referred to as a “She”? Obviously, we learned this from Jesus who will Himself marry His bride: the Church. But there must be reasoning beyond this. For instance, a ship is always referred to as a female. Does referring to the church as a "she" somehow refer to a woman’s womb? Like a ship, the womb is a safe dwelling place. Or am I making this all up? Q2: I've been hearing a lot about trouble with the JPII Institute in Rome? What's going on there? Q3: My husband and I have been happily married for 30 years. Living our Catholicism as married persons is very important to us. Our history of marital relations has been complicated because of some sexual abuse, body image issues, and depression for me and a brief period of pornography plus difficulty with emotional intimacy for my husband. We have worked hard to keep working at our relationship. Our marital relations have rarely been easy but we keep trying because we love each other and want to honor our spousal relationship. Most recently I have had some medical issues and surgery which has made having intercourse temporarily not possible. It has been over 6 months since we tried. We have gradually grown less affectionate because I don’t want to unfairly arouse my husband. Sometimes I am relieved but feel guilty about it, to have the medical excuse because the difficulties trying to be intimate are so emotionally painful. We are both so vulnerable and I am concerned our affection and sexual intimacy will never improve. Discouraged. Please advise. Many thanks. Who is that cute little laugh in the background? We are joined again by the wonderful Melina Charis. (See Episode 9 for her first episode with us!) We decided that we wanted to bring Melina into our gratefulness segment this week, let us know what you think about having our guests share in this part of our episode! Melina Charis: Please visit www.melinacharis.com to see what she has been up to! Melina has just launched a new program! She is now a mindset coach! But wait... what is a mindset coach? A coach as a general definition (by Brooke Castillo) A coach is someone who helps you witness your own mind so you can change it to help get what you want. Melina does 1:1 training and also group training! You talk about what's going on, what's blocking you from your goals. A coach can help you realize that the only limit on yourself is YOU. A coach can help you figure out how to manage your mind so you can reach your long term and short term goals. Sit that inner critic aside! Melina Charis is here to save the day. We talk about the 100 people in a room theory- There are 100 people in a room with you. 99 of those people love you, care for you and want you to succeed, but one hates you. You as a human will focus on the one person who has negative thoughts, rather that the 99 people surrounding you who love you. Hey Melina... what is the best thing that you have done to control looping thoughts and stop your mind from spiring out of control? -- Journaling! Write down every single thought you are having. Looping thoughts, dont censor your thoughts. NOBODY IS LOOKING AT THIS BUT YOU! Don't be spiritual, dont be kind on that piece of paper. Allow yourself to release those thoughts. Your mind can be stopped by the act of writing. Putting those thoughts out releases them from you. Maps at home are an effective first step in bringing your trip alive for your family. This podcast tells you how to use maps right now with your family, whether you’re dreaming up a trip or currently well into the planning of a specific trip. You will hook your family with these simple steps. (See Episode 009 for novel ways to use maps for planning and while traveling.) MAIN TOPIC: You want to hook your family into your trip, right? You want to bring this trip alive at your house in the time prior to your departure. One of the easiest and most impactful ways to hook your family in (and visibly bring the trip alive) at your house is to use maps. This is part 1 of 2 in the Map series, covering using maps right now at home for dreaming and exploring. (Part 2 covers my novel ways you can use maps when you’re planning and when you’re traveling.) QUESTION AT THE END: "How do I deal with butterflies (and stress) before a trip? Is it common?" CHEWY TIDBIT AT THE VERY END: An easy-to-implement activity to connect your family with your trip (centered around maps). Show notes and more available at: https://dreamconnecttravel.com/podcast/
We start our last section on the 31 Day Courier MBA series, where we talk about employee relations. We don't have employees, you say. When you're an independent contractor, you are considered self employed, so guess who your employee is? You have a responsibility to take care of that employee. We talk about three major types of benefit that are often provided only for employees. Is it possible to give yourself these benefits?Paid Time OffInsuranceRetirement. These are all things you can give yourself. There is a cost, just like there is a cost for an employer to provide these things. You need to realize that these kinds of benefits DO add to the disparity in earning power between being an employee and being an independent contractor. See Episode 6 for more on that. It's important to think about these things and ask how much you need them. What happens if something happens to you while working? What insurance do you need? It's worth getting with a good independent insurance agent to discuss where you are vulnerable, and get with a good tax pro to udnerstand how these things affect your taxes. In the episode, we referenced this article from Dave Ramsey on how to tell if you need life insurance. For a blog version of this episode (not necessarily word for word) you can go here. For a list of all episodes on the series, go here.

This is the fourth in a series on brain chemicals. See Episode 139 "Brain Chemistry" for an overview on how these chemicals fit into our survival as a species. (http://RunningAFEVER.com/139). To review, oxytocin is associated with love, trust, and friendship. It is triggered by physical contact, hugging, shaking hands, acts of human generosity (witnessed, received or done). But not generosity with money. Time and action are the important things here. It inhibits addiction, boosts the immune system, and takes time. Read the full post at http://RunningAFEVER.com/153
In this episode we cover three things. The Wisdom Silos The Danger of Silos How to Use Teamwork to Win the Battle Against Silos Inspiration for this episode comes from Chapter Five, “Cover and Move”, of “Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALS Lead and Win”, by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin. Check out Jocko’s Podcast What is a silo? An isolated grouping, department or team that functions apart from others. 1. The Wisdom of Silos Breaking down into different function and different projects allows for Concentration… leading to higher productivity Consistency… each day I know what I’m doing and what’s required Accountability… I know who to go to when issues occur etc. Which leads to higher performance (safety, quality, speed) But you have to realize that intentionally or unintentionally the silos can create challenges that hinder the overall effectiveness of the team…. 2. The Danger of Silos Us vs. them Long term grudges Hoarding resources Refusing to communicate Rejoicing when something goes wrong (The enemy is not within) Myopia or shortsightedness distant objects blurry, close objects clear It’s not intentional Not understanding the needs of the other parties Miss out on opportunities to improve Not sharing information Not working together Not understanding one another 3. How to use teamwork to win the battle against silos: Above all realize that it starts with the leadership Establish and communicate a Clear mission and vision for the company, each department and each project See Episode 10: How to Clarify Your Company Vision (And Why It’s Vital to Your Success) | Ep 10 Map out your organization structure and develop Peer to Peer Relationships Establish tours of duty for aspiring leaders Have the senior leaders “show their faces” in different places In executive meetings: Allow advocacy but come to an agreement Don’t air dirty laundry with outside parties Watch your personal bias Don’t allow “step-children” Stay humble Leading a Construction Company is Challenging It is common for construction company owners like yourself to struggle with getting each employee contributing equally to your organization's success. Despite your best intentions, it's tough for you to find time to break down the silos that exist in your business between the field and the office, and to get everyone to take accountability for the production, quality, and safety goals of each project. These issues not only create stress and frustration for you, they cost you money. I have worked with construction company owners for over fifteen years, and have developed a short assessment which will quickly identify the specific leadership areas you need to work on. To take the assessment click this link: https://www.ericanderton.com/construction-leadership-assessment/
In this episode of “Next Security Clearance Expert Up”*, I was fortunate to be able to discuss security clearance issues with Jeffrey W. Bennett who is very well respected in this field. In addition to having a combined 25 years of experience in the National Industrial Security Program, Jeff is a former Army officer with military intelligence experience and he also speaks three languages! Jeff’s primary area of expertise is in the field of industrial security. He has really mastered this area and eagerly shares his knowledge. In fact, he is so prolific on this topic that he has his own publishing arm, a blog and a podcast! Also, since turnabout is fair play, I did this podcast with Jeff after he was kind enough to have me on his podcast discussing Security Clearance Problems and How to Solve Them. I had never met Jeff in person prior to doing this podcast and it was great to get to know him. He really is an important and integral contributor to our industrial security community. * I should note that this is the really the second episode of the “Next Security Clearance Expert Up.” See Episode 31 for my podcast featuring Stan Miller.
