We discuss how combining the historic open pit San Manuel Mine and robust Kalamazoo underground assets with Copper Creek Project's at-surface open pit breccias and underground porphyry assets at American Eagle and Keel creates a multi-asset copper district in the USA; and one of the largest undeveloped copper projects in North America.   Strategic Rationale Significant resource potential: The combined project would have the potential to become a multi-generational copper district delivering made-in-America copper. Accelerates pathway to production: Opportunity to leverage the private land position of San Manuel to facilitate the potential for expedited copper cathode production from the combined projects. Flexibility through private land and infrastructure: Additional ~27,000 acres of private land for site facilities and access to existing regional infrastructure, including road, rail, gas and power. Centralizes infrastructure and reduces environmental footprint: The proximity of Copper Creek and San Manuel allows for the potential to leverage existing infrastructure and for future facilities to be shared between the projects, reducing the overall environmental footprint while enhancing capital efficiency. The combined assets offer potential for project staging: Prioritization of copper cathode production, followed by open pit sulphides before development of underground operations. Last week, Madison's Office of the Independent Police Monitor released a new finding: that police violence played a role in the death of a man in custody in 2024, contrary to the county's medical examiner's autopsy report. To talk about the place of medical examiners in the criminal justice system, host Dana Pellebon is joined by scholar, Terence Keel, author of The Coroner’s Silence: Death Records and the Hidden Victims of Police Violence. Keel researches the relationships between medicine, science, race, and religion, with a focus on how the science of medicine in the US has been used to perpetuate racial injustice and inequity, especially when it comes to state monitoring and surveillance. He says that coroners are an overlooked piece in the criminal justice puzzle and that death investigation systems provide cover for violent state systems.  In 2013, the Death in Custody Reporting Act made it possible for Keel to look at the numbers. He found that in the twenty-year period after the Act, over 32,000 people were killed in police custody, leading him to argue that dying in custody has become the new capital punishment. They also talk about the history of the coroner role, one that dates back to the Colonial era, the rise of civilian oversight commissions, and the impact of coroner's reports on Black and Brown communities. Terence Keel is a professor of human biology, society and African American studies at UCLA. His latest book is The Coroner's Silence: Death Records and the Hidden Victims of Police Violence. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Terence Keel. Classified as a black male, Dr. Keel is a "Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles where [he teaches] in the Department of African American Studies and the UCLA Institute for Society and Genetics." Dr. Keel also directs "the UCLA Lab for BioCritical Studies and [serves] as the Advisor for Structural Competency and Innovation for the UCLA Simulation Center at the David Geffen School of Medicine." In the midst of all this constructive work, Dr. Keel found time to visit Seattle's Elliott Bay Books to discuss his new tome, The Coroner's Silence: Death Records and the Hidden Victims of Police Violence. The text examines the how large numbers of black males and non-white males in general die under suspicious circumstances in officer custody. Dr. Keel notes that White coroners and medical examiners have a history of excluding black people from this profession and skillfully using language to conceal the wrongful death of black male prisoners. Gus noted at least one double negative and a plethora of curious usages of the pronoun "we." "We" don't practice White Supremacy and cage black dudes. The text also suggests that White people who practice Racism have a vision impairment — i.e., black males are invisible — and strains to insist that 'everyone' is vulnerable and could die in custody under the current System of White Supremacy.
