With Premier Danielle Smith's dangerous anti-immigrant MAGA agenda revealed in Alberta, the situation is becoming increasingly precarious. As the threat of US- and Russia-backed separatism looms larger in the province, whispers on Parliament Hill suggest that more Conservative MPs are considering leaving Pierre Poilievre for PM Mark Carney, whose unifying presence and steady leadership could guide us through these challenging times. The ongoing invasion by Putin in Ukraine is entering its fourth year, and it's crucial for NATO, along with Canada, to escalate its support for the Ukrainian people. As the world grapples with the fallout of the Supreme Court ruling that Trump's tariffs are ILLEGAL, we face a critical question: Will Trump respect the rule of law, or will he continue to defy the courts? The stakes are particularly high for Canada, where the economic implications are profound.Adding fuel to the fire, Premier Danielle Smith has introduced a 9-point referendum that raises serious concerns about her government's direction, particularly with its troubling scapegoating of newcomers to Alberta. This move signals not only political chaos within her United Conservative Party but also a misguided attempt to rally support that could endanger our diverse and thriving communities. In the Conservative Party, the chaos continues as Pierre Poilievre loses yet another MP to Mark Carney, with whispers of more departures on the horizon. This instability within the party raises alarms about its future and relevance, especially as Jamil Jivani faces criticism for his divisive pro-American rhetoric during this contentious trade war. Moreover, the global landscape is shifting dramatically with the arrest of former Prince Andrew in connection with Jeffrey Epstein, a situation that could unveil even more troubling revelations. We cannot ignore the potential threats that loom over international relations, like the possibility of an attack on Iran by the Trump administration.Join Clinton Desveaux and host Laura Babcock for an in-depth analysis of this tumultuous news day impacting Canada and global democracy. Puis, au printemps 2013, un mécanicien du nom de Tim Bosma quitte son domicile pour faire essayer son pick-up à un acheteur. Il ne rentrera jamais. Ces trois affaires semblent d'abord sans lien. Mid-Atlantic - conversations about US, UK and world politics
In this episode of Mid-Atlantic, Roifield Brown sits down with Canadian political commentator and host of The O Show, Laura Babcock, to dissect Canada's unexpected political upheaval and its new identity on the world stage. With Mark Carney now prime minister, what was once unimaginable has become policy: a technocratic, globally respected leader is now seen by many Canadians as their country's best defense against the growing unpredictability of the United States under Donald Trump.Babcock explains how Trump's revived “51st state” rhetoric and a separatist push from Alberta have shaken Canadian politics out of its usual calm. Mark Carney, a former governor of both the Bank of England and the Bank of Canada, was drafted into leadership in a moment of national anxiety. The result? What many are calling the “Carney Doctrine” a centrist, pragmatic, globally cooperative approach that reasserts Canada's place as a serious voice in a chaotic international landscape. But this isn't a cheerleading session. Carney's past as a global banker still raises eyebrows among populists, and there are strategic risks in rebalancing trade and security away from the U.S. toward other powers like China. Still, Babcock argues that Carney's blend of calm pragmatism and sharp global insight has given Canada a renewed sense of unity, purpose and relevance. Hosted on Acast. In May 2013, Tim Bosma left his rural Ontario home for a late night test drive with two men interested in buying his truck. He never returned. What followed was a complex investigation that uncovered a case driven not by need, but by entitlement.Authorities soon focused on Dellen Millard, a wealthy aviation heir known for risk taking and a pattern of reckless behavior. Investigators pieced together evidence including burner phones, GPS data, and messages referencing so called “missions.” Their findings led to a custom built industrial device owned by Millard, where evidence later confirmed Tim Bosma's death. As the investigation widened, police also connected Millard to the disappearance of his former girlfriend, Laura Babcock, and the death of his father, Wayne Millard, which had initially been ruled a suicide. Millard and accomplice Mark Smich were ultimately convicted, and Millard is now serving multiple life sentences. This case raises an unsettling question about power, privilege, and accountability. After listening to Scott Bessent, the Treasury Secretary in the Trump administration, suggest that Alberta could be a perfect fit for the USA, it's clear that the risk to our sovereignty has never been greater! The presence of MAGA operatives and their financial and media influence is growing, with the aim of pushing Alberta toward separation from Canada. As the rogue Trump regime threatens to take Greenland, following the illegal invasion of Venezuela, the world stands on the brink of chaos. NATO is on high alert, and Canada finds itself in greater danger than ever before. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mark Carney is being lauded as the Leader of the Free World for his efforts with the Coalition of the Willing in Europe.Putin's Russia continues to escalate its illegal attacks on Ukraine, while China vocally condemns America's actions. After a tumultuous and alarming weekend, it is crucial that Canadians recognize the urgent threats facing our sovereignty and international alliances. The Trump regime's reckless actions—ranging from blatant violations of international laws by invading Venezuela, military threats against neighbouring nations like Greenland and Mexico and assertion of dominance over our hemisphere —pose a grave risk not only to our allies but also to our own sovereignty. This unprecedented challenge to the post-WW2 World Order demands our attention and action to protect democracy. As we stand on the brink of a new era, Pierre Poilievre's misguided attempts to align with Trump and his premature celebration of the fall of socialism are not just shortsighted; they are dangerous. Add to that Jamil Jivani's college tours and grievance-stoking on the far right, Canadians need to be on high alert about MAGA propaganda in our country. Doug Ford also lost a court case today and has to turn over his cellphone records so Ontarians might actually know what the scandal-plagued Premier has been up to. It's a testament to Global News's journalism. We are fortunate to have experts like Guy Felicia from Vancouver, who sheds light on the complexities of the drug crisis and homelessness. In a compelling discussion with host Laura Babcock, he provides an insightful analysis of the current landscape and offers strategies to protect the integrity of Canada's democracy and our mental health during this stressful time. Now is the time for us to unite, to engage in critical conversations about our future, and to stand firm in our support for democracy, justice, and our global partnerships. With Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre escalating his MAGA-style rhetoric and depicting our Canadian cities as war zones, it's time for all Canadians to take a stand. His blatant challenges to the RCMP regarding their investigation into the SNC-Lavalin scandal and his alarming policies on immigration are making our nation vulnerable to those who wish to undermine it. We cannot afford to remain silent; we must call him out now to prevent Canada from heading down a dangerous path like America's.Fearless former Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne stands up against this trend in a spirited conversation with host Laura Babcock. Wynne doesn't shy away from criticizing Premier Doug Ford either, condemning his "parking lot thuggery" and actions surrounding the Greenbelt Scandal and the controversial Skills Development Fund Fiasco. As a former educator, Wynne passionately advocates for the teachers' strike in Alberta and the critical need for increased funding for public schools across Canada. This is about more than just politics—it's about our values and the future we want for our children.Join Kathleen and Laura as they dissect the true motives of leaders like Trump and Ford, emphasizing the urgent need to defend democracy in our homes and communities, and through movements like the #nokings protest on October 18. In light of the rise of fascism in America, it's crucial for Canadians to stand united and safeguard our sovereignty. With President Trump once again raising the controversial 51st State narrative, and the situation in Alberta resembling the Wild West — complete with separatist meetings linked to Trump's Cabinet — we must ask ourselves: Is treason at play? Premier Danielle Smith's failure to confront a moderator who rudely silenced a student at a public forum reflects a troubling trend of dismissiveness toward the voices of Canadians. Meanwhile, talk of pipeline deals swirls, and Pierre Poilievre's increasingly MAGA-style Conservative Party of Canada tries to criticize Prime Minister Mark Carney's global outreach. It's time for all of us, from every corner of the country, to be on high alert. As panellist Douglas Connors and host Laura Babcock point out, the stakes have never been higher, especially with the constant pro-MAGA propaganda coming into Canada. We must demand progress from our government to protect our economy and our democratic values. We must also keep Premiers Ford, Moe, and Smith accountable for their regressive policies.Join us in building a strong, pro-Canada, pro-democracy community where your voice truly matters!Let's take a united stand. Sign the Forever Canadian petition to keep Alberta firmly within the embrace of Canada. Together, we can ensure our nation remains strong, secure, and resilient against any threats.
In the wake of the shocking political assassination of Charlie Kirk, our Scandal Panel—Keith Leslie, Mark Cripps, and host Laura Babcock—strongly condemns any form of political violence. Canadians must unify against hate and learn from the mistakes of our neighbours to the south. The stakes are higher than ever as the panel dives into the potential onset of World War III and Canada's crucial role in the Coalition of the Willing and NATO in defending Ukraine, Poland, and ultimately, the principles of freedom and democracy that we hold dear. Prime Minister Mark Carney's bold actions to align even Conservative Premiers, including Danielle Smith, illustrate a concerted effort to foster unity in these challenging times. As we discuss the future of Alberta's separation and welcome Bonnie Critchley as next week's guest, the importance of collaboration and coherent strategy for Canada's strength cannot be overstated. We must also address the concerning rhetoric of Pierre Poilievre, which echoes a troubling MAGA-style discourse that only undermines Canada's standing during this economic turmoil. It's time to rise above divisive narratives that threaten our sovereignty and democratic integrity.Your voice matters now more than ever! By commenting, subscribing, and sharing this important pro-Canada, pro-democracy conversation, you contribute to a movement that emphasizes peaceful, strong opinions as the cornerstone of our democracy. This week, we've watched the brave and resilient Epstein Survivors, who stand boldly against Trump and the entrenched power elite, and witnessed the formidable Margaret Atwood eloquently challenge Danielle Smith over her regressive book-banning policies. On today's episode, host Laura Babcock and guest Douglas Connors delve into the urgent need for all Canadians to unite and vigorously counter the torrent of new Trump falsehoods about our nation, as well as the MAGA-style power grab by Premier Ford with school trustees in Ontario, as he neglects to protect Ontario jobs from Trump's damaging tariffs. They also predict Poilievre's negative and irritating return to Parliament and raise critical questions about Prime Minister Carney's decision to welcome the architect of MAGA Project 2025 to his Cabinet meeting and ponder whether his budget will strike a balance between the austerity needed on a war footing and the meaningful support for Canada's most vulnerable citizens. Mark Carney is Canada's new prime minister, the Liberals are surging in the polls, and the country is locked in an escalating trade war with its unpredictable southern neighbour. At the centre of it all? Donald Trump. Since returning to the White House, Trump has hit Canada with aggressive tariffs and even floated the outrageous idea of annexation. The result? A nationalist backlash, a boycott of U.S. goods, and a shifting political landscape that could redefine Canada's future.Roifield Brown is joined by media strategist Laura Babcock and political analyst Adam Schaan to unpack what Carney's leadership means for Canada and whether Pierre Poilievre, Canada's own mini-Trump, can survive the fallout. Has Trump inadvertently handed the Liberals a lifeline? Will Canada turn further toward Europe as America becomes an unreliable partner? And is this trade war just a symptom of a much deeper ideological battle?Five Notable Quotes from the Episode:“We are in a propaganda war with our southern neighbors, and they are trying to get us to question our own democracy.” – Laura Babcock“This election won't be about facts—it will be fueled by emotions, and right now, Canadians feel under siege.” – Adam Schaan“Trump didn't think this through. He needs Canada's resources far more than Canada needs his nonsense.” – Roifield Brown“If Trump can do this to Canada, what's stopping him from doing it to any other ally?” – Laura Babcock“If Poilievre can't secure a majority, his leadership will be on borrowed time.” – Adam SchaanFurther Reading & Resources:The Times UK: “Mark Carney Must Beat Canada's Mini-Trump”Toronto Star: “Canada's Elbows-Up Response to Trump's Trade War”CBC: “How Canada's Trade Strategy is Shifting Amid U.S. Tensions”For more, follow @LauraBabcock and @AdamK on social media, and don't forget to subscribe to Mid-Atlantic for the latest political analysis from both sides of the pond. Justin Trudeau's decade-long run as Canada's Prime Minister is ending, marking a dramatic shift in Canadian politics. Once a symbol of progressive optimism, Trudeau is now grappling with plummeting popularity, a fractured Liberal Party, and mounting challenges from a surging Conservative opposition under Pierre Poilievre. In this episode, Roy Field Brown speaks with political commentators Laura Babcock and Adam Khan to dissect Trudeau's legacy, his downfall, and the road ahead for Canada. From ambitious immigration targets and a housing crisis to economic stagnation and divisive COVID-19 policies, Trudeau's missteps have alienated both the political center and his progressive base. Compounding this is an emboldened far-right influence in Canada, fueled by rhetoric spilling over from the United States. As Trump eyes Canada in his rhetoric, even suggesting a borderless North America, the stakes have never been higher. Can the Liberals regroup under new leadership like Mark Carney to fend off a Conservative majority, or will 2025 mark a seismic political realignment?Quotes from the Episode:“Trudeau thought his charm and the family name would carry him through, but hubris blinded him to the mounting political storm.” – Laura Babcock“Pierre Poilievre's populism isn't MAGA; it's targeted, class-based, and resonates with both urban and rural Canadians.” – Adam Khan“Canada is in a perfect storm: post-pandemic anxiety, inflation, housing shortages, and a rising tide of right-wing extremism.” – Laura Babcock“If young people can't afford homes, we're facing a societal collapse—it's not just an economic issue, it's a moral one.” – Roy Field Brown“The left must reclaim its mantle of economic fairness before the right completely co-opts it with empty populist rhetoric.” – Roy Field BrownFurther Reading:Canada's Housing Crisis: Trudeau's Biggest ChallengePoilievre's Populism: A New Conservative BlueprintNAFTA and the Future of Canada-US RelationsTrump's Neo-Manifest Destiny: What It Means for CanadaMark Carney's Vision for Canada's Economy Hosted on Acast. Episode 319: In the first two parts of our Shadows of Deception series, we delved into the abysmal depths of depravity exhibited by Dellen Millard and Mark Smich through the heinous murders of Tim Bosma and Laura Babcock. With Millard and Smich already incarcerated for their previous atrocities, a new investigation was launched into the 2012 death of Dellen's father, Wayne Millard, a wealthy aviation businessman. Initially presumed to be a suicide, the circumstances surrounding his demise came under intense scrutiny after his son's sensational arrests for the Bosma and Babcock murders. After their investigation, authorities arrested Dellen Millard and charged him with the first-degree murder of his father. This shocking twist cast a sinister shadow over the already grim narrative, painting Dellen Millard as a far more depraved criminal than initially realized – one willing to extinguish even the life of his own flesh and blood. It appears that Dellen Millard is a cold-blooded individual who would stop at nothing to get what he wanted. Episode 317: Tim Bosma, a 32-year-old family man from Ancaster, Ontario, went missing in May 2013 after taking two men for a test drive of his truck. The two men were later identified as Dellen Millard, a 27-year-old heir to a Canadian aviation empire, and Mark Smich, a 24-year-old drug dealer and aspiring rapper. This case would expose the disturbing reality of Millard and Smich's cold-blooded violence and web of deceit. The investigation into Bosma's disappearance was just the beginning of uncovering the harrowing events surrounding Millard and Smich. In 2012, before Bosma's murder, they had killed Millard's 23-year-old ex-girlfriend, Laura Babcock. Later that same year, they shockingly took the life of Dellen's father, Wayne Millard. As the details of the Tim Bosma case unfold, the stage is set for the equally horrific events of the murders of Laura Babcock and Wayne Millard to come to light in parts 2 and 3 of this true crime series. The disturbing stories of these two killers, Dellen Millard and Mark Smich, reveal a chilling trail of devastation left for the families and communities impacted by their callous acts of violence.
