March 4, 2021 — Former Ukiah Police Sergeant Kevin Murray is scheduled to appear in Mendocino County Superior Court today, to be arraigned on information. On January 26, District Attorney David Eyster filed a complaint against Murray, charging him with four felonies for crimes alleged to have occurred on November 25 of last year. The complaint says he entered an occupied motel room on South Orchard Avenue in Ukiah and violated the civil rights of a woman by intimidating her “under color of law.” Murray is also facing two charges of burglary for entering the room twice, and one of sexual battery for forcing the woman to touch his genitals. The DA’s complaint also includes a misdemeanor charge of possession of methamphetamine on December 1. Murray posted $200,000 bail on the conditions that he wear an ankle monitor, surrender all firearms, and be subject to search and seizure of firearms and drug testing. Murray, who lives in Lakeport, surrendered four handguns and a rifle with a scope to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office on February 3. Later that month, Eyster filed another complaint against Murray, saying that in June or July of 2014, Murray raped someone identified only as Jane Doe, while armed with a gun. Murray faces a second count of forcible oral copulation against Jane Doe a few months later, in April. Murray was arrested again last week on those charges, and is being held on $500,000 bail. Eyster requested that his previous bail be recalled and increased because he had hidden an assault rifle at his father-in-law’s house. According to the complaint, Murray had carried the rifle as a duty weapon while he was a police officer, and it is illegal for non-peace officers to possess this particular kind of weapon. The DA believes that Murray committed contempt of court and fraud on the court by submitting a false firearm statement. Ukiah Police Chief Justin Wyatt released a statement in a Facebook video on January 29, saying the internal investigation of Murray had concluded and that he was no longer employed with the Ukiah Police Department. He said the UPD is cooperating with the DA’s office in its investigation, which is ongoing. Murray and the City of Ukiah are being sued on separate claims in the United States District Court of California in San Francisco by a man named Christopher Rasku, who says that on October 13 of 2018, Murray broke into his home and brutalized him. Rasku was later charged with the felony of resisting arrest. According to a complaint signed in May of last year, Rasku was in his home behind a partly closed doorway when Murray responded to a call by a neighbor about an argument between two other neighbors. Rasku claims Murray charged his door, knocking him unconscious, and proceeded to beat him so severely that one of his lungs collapsed. The statement says Murray had not turned on his body camera, but that a neighbor filmed Murray’s forcible entrance, which allegedly contradicted Murray’s account. The Willits Police Department has also had some personnel changes in the last few months. Alexis Blaylock, the city’s first Black female police chief, arrived on August 26 of last year and departed abruptly on October 8. In December, a Southern California law firm sent the Willits City Council a letter, saying it was representing Blaylock. It said Blaylock would sign a release of claims agains the city, or agree not to sue, for a payment of $500,000 from “the City and applicable individuals...and a commitment on behalf of the City to provide workplace discrimination and retaliation training to certain City employees and officials for the purpose of making the City and Police Department more tolerant, effective and honest institutions.” The letter then goes on to detail the hostility that Blaylock allegedly encountered from a subordinate and the City Manager at the time, Stephanie Garrabrant-Sierra. The claims range from difficulties securing keys to the evidence room to being undermined when she fact-checked a workers’ compensation claim based on an undocumented use of force. The letter claims that “The City undermined Chief Blaylock’s authority and credited baseless allegations against her while ignoring her own credible claims of misconduct. Yet non-black male employees committed serious misconduct that was ignored.” The letter claims that the City Manager told Blaylock she could not write anyone up for any reason or take disciplinary actions without her permission, and that Blaylock was told to meet with her and a white male subordinate three times a week to assess her performance. The letter claims that Blaylock has lost income and suffered mental and emotional distress, humiliation and reputational harm and that she is prepared to sue the City if her demands for compensation and training are not met. Brian Bender was hired as the new Willits City Manager on January fourth of this year. Fabian Lizzarago, who retired as the Fort Bragg police chief last year, has been serving as the interim police chief in Willits since early November. In a lengthy Facebook post this week, he referred to “possible litigation pending regarding interactions between my predecessor and members of the Department and City staff.” He added that no lawsuit has been filed against the City or the Department, and that policies continue to be reviewed. He said his department is young in terms of experience, and that “any mistakes made are of the mind and not of the heart.” In November, voters in Willits passed Measure K, a three-quarter cent sales tax, to prevent the elimination of police services and other vital city functions.
Originally recorded on February 26, 2021. Shawn Baker, Chief Nutritionist for the US Agency for International Development (USAID) continued the discussion after a virtual CID Speaker Series event held on February 26, 2021, exploring their work further with CID Student Ambassador Sama Kubba. The COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented threat to nutrition. It is simultaneously disrupting every sector that families rely on to nourish their children. As families’ incomes drop, they can no longer afford nutritious foods. Producers and sellers of nutritious foods are struggling to stay afloat. Health systems are overwhelmed, and families are more reluctant to access needed healthcare, while necessary efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19 are decreasing coverage of life-saving care. In December, startling projections of the secondary impacts from COVID-19 on maternal and child nutrition and economic development were released. Shawn Baker, USAID's Chief Nutritionist, will share the latest data on the devastating impacts of COVID-19 on nutrition, as well as insights into how USAID and its partners are using this data to adapt programming and ensure a more effective, coordinated response to address this global nutrition crisis. Shawn Baker is the Chief Nutritionist for the US Agency for International Development (USAID). In this position, he chairs the Agency’s Nutrition Leadership Council, oversees the vision and strategy of the Agency’s Center for Nutrition in the Bureau for Resilience and Food Security, and coordinates related efforts across USAID. He also guides USAID’s investments and engagement with partners to address malnutrition in developing countries.

In December of 1770, Jean-Jacques Rousseau completed his Confessions and gave his first reading of the book to a group of seven or so gathered at a Parisian home for the occasion. Rousseau started at 9am and for the next 14 to 18 hours, he let it all hang out. Those who first heard the Confessions read were equally stunned but variously effected, you could say. From “how beautiful and profound that an individual could be so nobly forthright” to “what’s wrong with this whimpering psycho?” Those are paraphrases. But why would someone, especially someone so well-known, want us to know even more? Why so openly admit his most embarrassing and personal flaws and acts, as he did in this book? The spankings, the exposures, the courtesans; the five children out of wedlock, each dumped at a foundling home; the betrayal of innocent people and friends; the paranoia and conspiracy; all that laid bare by the subject himself! So I wanted to talk to Laura Field about these and other things, and she didn’t disappoint. I say that even after she laughed at me for asking “what’s wrong with modern society?”Laura is a political theorist who’s lately been on the fascism and authoritarianism beat, where she’s among the most penetrating analysts. She’s worked on everything from Xenophon to Nietzsche and contemporary politics. Her work on the Confessions, especially, has shown me a lot, and I’m so glad she took the time to have a chat with me about it and the wily and elusive Jean-Jacques.Her work on the "Confessions" is “Rousseau’s Confessions: A Pattern for Living," which you can find in this volume.
This is a rerelease of episode #73, from September 2020, about the devastating effects the federal PRO Act would have on independent contractors in the U.S. I am rereleasing this now because the House has announced its plans to vote on this act next week, the week of March 8. We need your help! We must all tell our House representative and our two senators the impact of the PRO Act on our careers. We must explain that we are not “gig workers,” that we are career professionals just like lawyers and accountants. Please tell your story about how you benefit by being an independent contractor. The PRO Act will likely pass the Democratic House. But, in the 50-50 split Senate, there is hope, but we must get the word out and talk to our legislators and senators now. This is a call to action! Here is the edited version of the original show notes from September, with resources below: Today’s guest are Kim Kavin and Karon Warren, two longtime freelance writers who have built successful freelance businesses. Both are active in the fight against the national PRO Act. Kim was active fighting against a similar state bill in New Jersey, and Karon heads up the national efforts to defeat the PRO Act through the grassroots organization Fight for Freelancers. The PRO Act (Protecting the Right to Organize) was introduced in Congress in late 2019. The initial intent of the bill was to protect workers who are misclassified and give them the ability to join a union. However, the bill was amended to add a classification test taken directly from California’s disastrous anti-freelance bill (now law) known as AB5. That test is called the ABC Test and was written in the 1930s for factory workers. The way the ABC Test is currently written prohibits most independent contractors from working with clients. It doesn’t matter if you call yourself a freelancer, consultant, an agency, whatever — if you are a W9 independent contractor, this affects you. The rest of the PRO Act does not harm freelancers, so freelancers need to focus their efforts on getting the ABC Test part of the bill changed. The push for this bill is union funded, and Democrats—including President Joe Biden—support the bill. In California, legislators “weaponized” the ABC Test by deleting some of the original language. The ABC Test has three prongs (A, B, C) that independent contractors must pass in order to do business. It’s the B part that is the problem. B originally had two parts: Part 1 says you can’t be in the same line of business as the company that is paying you to do the work. But Part 2 negates Part 1 if you do all of your work off company premises. Most freelancers can pass Part 2. However, California deleted Part 2, leaving only the part that says you can’t be in the same line of business as the company paying you. That went into law in January 2020 in the state and destroyed careers of all types of independent contractors, who could no longer work for companies in their industry. This included respiratory therapists and other medical professionals who contract with various hospitals — they lost work when they were needed the most during the pandemic. Other careers and industries affected include journalists, content writers, editors, real estate appraisers, comedians, theater workers, symphonies and orchestras, truck drivers, translators and more. In fact, California has found more than 300 industries hurt by AB5. California freelancer writers managed to get an exemption in the law that capped their submissions to 35 a year for each client. The exemption partially helped some writers, but it also had a lot of problems — for example, content writers, blog writers and newspaper columnists could quickly and easily hit 35 submissions, ending their work for that year for that client. Forbes, Hearst and New York Times were among those who have stopped hiring California freelancers. In December 2019, the AB5 copycat bills started popping up in Democrat strongholds (blue states), including New York and New Jersey, where Kim lives. The bill was introduced in New Jersey with about six weeks to go in a lame duck session. New Jersey freelance writers organized quickly to educate lawmakers about the damage to freelance careers. In New Jersey, lawmakers seemed to pay attention when the writers explained that they were “career professionals,” who earn anywhere from $50 to $300 an hour from clients. They compared themselves to specialized accountants and attorneys. They told individual stories that showed that they were professionals, not victims. The movement created the Twitter hashtag #IRSNotABC, which represents that the IRS standard is a better standard than the ABC Test. We should advocate for the PRO Act and state copycat bills to change their language to follow the IRS standard, not the ABC Test. The IRS standard already exists. It was written in the 1980s and has been updated since. The standard has about 60 questions to evaluate the relationship between a person and a company. The IRS website says, “The general rule is that an individual is an independent contractor if the payer has the right to control or direct only the result of the work, not what will be done and how it will be done.” Unlike the B part of ABC, the IRS standard allows independent contractors to work in the same industry as their clients. Most legitimate independent contractors can pass the IRS standard. Laws already exist to protect exploited freelancers, and individuals can file a report with the IRS if they believe they have been exploited, like if they were hired as a “freelancer” but the company required them to work a full-time schedule and on the premises. That is not freelancing. The U.S. Department of Labor in both the Obama and Trump administrations prosecuted cases against companies who have misclassified employees. Some freelancers have said that the PRO Act or a state version doesn’t affect them for various reasons. Let’s go through some of these myths to debunk them and let independent contractors know they are in jeopardy: Myth 1: “I’m protected if I’m an LLC or S Corp.” Not true. While the test says “established business,” you must pass the B prong of the ABC Test to be able to work as an independent contractor. New Jersey advocates asked lawmakers to amend the bill to state that being an LLC or S Corp would exempt independent contractors from the law, but they would not add the language. Myth 2: “This is a partisan issue and those fighting against it are all Trump supporters or Republicans.” Not true. Karon explains that advocates are not taking political sides; they are talking about fixing this piece of legislation. It’s just a fact that Democrats, including Joe Biden, support the PRO Act and the ABC Test. Therefore, it’s critical to educate Democrat lawmakers about why the ABC Test is harmful to freelancers. Melanie’s opinion: If you are a Democrat like me and have Democrat representatives and senators, I think it’s even more critical we speak up because it’s the Democrats’ minds we have to change AND we are their constituents and members of their party. Both Democrats and Republicans can educate their Democratic lawmakers and also ensure their Republican lawmakers know about the PRO Act and will work to change it or vote against it. Myth 3: “Those vocal against the PRO Act are paid by anti-union operatives.” Not true. These are all independent contractors who have created grassroots organizations out of necessity to save their freelance careers. This myth makes it even more important that individual freelancers explain their business and their success to legislators so they can understand who we are. What You Can Do: Educate yourself about the PRO Act and how to fight against it. See resources list below. Contact your U.S. House representative and your two state senators THIS WEEK. Ask to speak to them directly or email them. You can gather a small group of freelancers in your state and request a Zoom meeting. Tell your lawmakers your individual freelance success stories and the benefits you get from freelancing. Explain how much you are contributing to the economy. Then, ask them to change the PRO Act so that it uses the IRS standard, not the ABC Test. You can share data that shows most independent contractors want to remain as such. However, keep in mind that your individual stories affect lawmakers more than a bunch of statistics do. Share the message widely with other freelancers. Write op-eds for your local newspapers. Share on social media and retweet #IRSNotABC tweets and posts. In September, the Freelancers Union (which is a nonprofit, not a union) held a webinar with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York who supports unions and the PRO Act. However, Schumer acknowledged in the webinar that he recognizes the problems AB5 caused in California and said he is willing to work with freelancers on the PRO Act. This was a huge acknowledgement. Let’s hold him to that promise. (See press release in resources below.) This Saturday on Live Culture features a conversation with Andres Verzosa, Executive Director of The Stanley-Whitman House in Farmington,CT. The Stanley-Whitman House is a historic house museum built ca 1720, and is one of the oldest houses in Farmington. In December 2020 the structure celebrated it’s 300th anniversary. A well-preserved saltbox with post-medieval construction features, it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960. The house is now a living history center and museum. Events, classes, and exhibits encourage visitors of all ages to immerse themselves in history by engaging in Colonial life and the ideas that formed the foundation of that culture. The House offers docent-led and self-guided tours, visitors to The Stanley-Whitman House can participate in adult and children's programs, cooking demonstrations, walking tours, and other special events. Visitors may also view modern art installations, conduct genealogical or local history research in the Library, walk around the grounds, and enjoy the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century reproduction gardens. The need for social-distancing has made planning events and other programming very difficult for small arts organizations. We discuss the novel and innovative ways the members of this museum have found to keep the public engaged and the house vibrant. Now in it's 5th Year, Live Culture is a monthly radio program about art, ideas and visual culture, hosted by artist Martha Willette Lewis and airing on WPKN radio, Bridgeport Ct.

Which one of these song intros grabs your full attention? Listen to examples in video/podcast. Both intros are cool, but it’s definitely the second intro that captures our full attention! Why? Well, because it contains a totally surprising element: a reggae rhythm sung by a choir. What genre is that? Where’s this song going next? What other surprises are waiting for me if I keep listening? After only five seconds of music, our brains are already full of questions. And we’re an incredibly inquisitive species; we need answers to those questions, and the only way to get them is to keep listening. Now, you may be wondering why it’s so important to catch people’s attention in the first five seconds of your song. Well, there’s about 40,000 new songs being uploaded to Spotify every day, and the result of this overwhelming and never-ending stream of new music, is that a quarter of all songs get skipped in their first five seconds. That is why it’s more important now than ever before to make your music stand out from the crowd. Seriously, this is literally the first era in human history where a piece of music has needed to grab the listener’s full attention in under five seconds. And while we could have endless discussions about the negative repercussions of this change, it is the way it is and we can’t change that, so our time is far better spent thinking creatively within this new limitation. And by the way, if you’ve seen big artists releasing new singles that have long intros where nothing much happens, and you’re wondering why they don’t have to use the 5-Second Intro Rule. Well, it’s because those artists already have loyal fanbases who will happily listen through their long intros, because they trust them. It’s all about trust. If you’re an up-and-coming artist though, you don’t have that privilege yet, so you still need to earn your listener’s trust. Once you’ve done that though, and you’ve also built yourself a loyal fanbase, then you can throw the 5-Second Intro Rule out the window, too. But until then, this rule is your best friend! Okay, so now you’re probably thinking to yourself: How on earth do I capture the listener’s full attention in under five seconds? Well, there is arguably no better way to do that, than to create your own original never-before-heard genre. And how on earth do you do that? Well stay tuned, as we’re about to reveal all. STEP 1. PARENTS The most important thing to remember when it comes to creating a new genre, is that all genres are born from parent genres. I guess now is as good a time as any to have a little chat about the birds and the bees. You see, when a genre loves another genre, they mingle and exchange features, which results in a baby genre being born. So, when it comes to creating a new genre, your first step is to select the parents. As you know, we love all genres equally here at Hack Music Theory, so to help us choose our parents, we turned to Spotify. In December, Spotify gives you a summary of your year’s listening, and apparently Ray’s top genres were Reggae, Electronic, Djent, and... Choral. Hey, don’t judge! There’s no better way to start the day than a few slow nasal breaths, and a few Bach chorales. Seriously, try it. You’ll feel so much calmer throughout the day, and when you inevitably get stressed later, just take a few breaths and remember that peaceful feeling you got earlier from those beautiful Bach chorales. If you’re up for some morning counterpoint with your coffee (or tea), we recommend the album Bach 333: 4-Part Chorales (Vol. 1). STEP 2. FEATURES Right, so now that you’ve selected your parents (for us, they are: Reggae, Electronic, Djent, and Choral), step two is to choose what features from those parents you want to carry forwards into your offspring genre. And yes, your new baby genre can have more than two parents, this is the 21st century after all! This step may require some research to uncover what truly makes the parent genres sound the way they do. But remember, musical features can be detached from the instruments they’re commonly played on. For example, we took the Reggae skank, which is that off-beat rhythm usually played on the guitar or keyboard, and we gave it to our choir (well, our choir plugin). By detaching the Reggae skank from its usual instruments and moving it to a choir, we totally surprise our listeners, which instantly intrigues their brains and gets them asking all kinds of questions, and that ensures they will keep listening beyond our intro. And by the way, our example’s in A minor, so that’s just all the white notes from A to A. Next, we added the most characteristic feature from Djent, which is a polymetric guitar riff. If you’re new to the term polymeter, it’s just the fancy way of saying that you’re playing in two or more time signatures simultaneously. In our example, that’s happening cos our guitar riff is playing in a cycle of 7|16 for four bars then 4|16 for one bar, while all the other instruments are playing in 4|4. To integrate this polymeter with the other instruments, we played our guitar pattern on the kick drum as well. This makes the whole section more punchy too! Right, next up is our Electronic parent. And nothing says Electronic music better than a synth, so we added a super dancey line on a massive stereo synth. Then at the end of our section, we threw that synth melody up an octave and added a few variations, to keep it evolving. STEP 3. SURPRISE! In order to truly create a new genre, you need at least one feature to completely and utterly stand out in the most unexpected way. You see, some genre features fit in so well to other genres that they don’t actually sound new or unusual. For example, our Djent guitar riff sounds right at home in our new genre, so while that feature is certainly adding to the flavour, it’s not really creating a new genre. For a genre to be categorized as new, it needs to be different from all the genres that already exist, and that requires your new genre to have at least one totally surprising and unusual feature. And the best way to do that, is to look at which parent genres are the most opposite, or at least, the most different. In our example, Djent and Choral look like opposites at first glance, cos Djent is a subgenre of Metal, which is all about ultra-heavy guitars, and Choral is all about beautiful voices. However, on closer inspection, it turns out that choir plugins are not that uncommon in Djent, as they’re sometimes used in the background of tracks to add atmosphere and fill them out sonically. Also, some Djent bands even have a bit of Classical influence, which is another reason why the Djent and Choral combination doesn’t sound unusual. But, when we go below the surface and into the essence of our parent genres, we realise that Choral and Reggae are actually the most opposing genres. The reason for that, is because Choral tends to be legato, which means the music is flowing and has lots of long notes without breaks between them, while Reggae is super syncopated and has lots of short notes with breaks between. And that is why we’ve got a choir singing the Reggae skank, cos that off-beat rhythm containing all those short notes with breaks, is completely and utterly opposite to how a choir would normally sing. And just a quick caveat about selecting your parents. They need to be different genres, and not just different subgenres. For example, if you’re into Electronic music, don’t choose tropical house, glitch hop and dubstep as your parents. As cool as that will sound, the result will still be 100% Electronic, which is not a new genre. And there’s already countless subgenres in each genre, so while creating another new subgenre is great, it definitely won’t capture most people’s attention. On the other hand, if you select the parent genres: Electronic, Celtic, and Polka, now that is a new genre, which will definitely grab attention! And beyond that, it will also get people talking and sharing the music, which is how an artist grows their fanbase. STEP 4. BPM After combining your selected features to create your new genre, experiment with the BPM. You wanna use a tempo that could work in your parent genres, unless a shocking BPM is part of your new genre surprise! We went with 82 BPM for ours. STEP 5. THE 5-SECOND RULE Now, this is the vital step! If you don’t do this, you’ve wasted all your hard work creating a new genre. We call this step the 5-Second Rule, because as you know, a quarter of all songs get skipped in their first five seconds. So, as much as we love the idea of saving the best for last, when it comes to getting people to listen to your music, it is absolutely essential that you instantly reveal your genre surprise. And don’t just reveal it, throw it right into the spotlight of your opening bar. In other words, strip back your intro to just those features from opposing genres that will totally surprise your listeners. In our example, as we mentioned earlier, the most surprising feature is a choir singing that Reggae skank, so we stripped everything back to just choir and drums. The reason for the drums being there is to get people moving, cos if you can also get those feet tapping in the first five seconds, you’ve got an even better chance of people listening to your whole song. And on that note, if you’re just using drum loops or basic patterns at the moment, we highly recommend you start making attention-grabbing beats instead. If you need help doing that, you can use our Hack Drum Beats PDF. Also, if you need help writing better melodies, chord progressions, bass lines, and everything else, then use our Songwriting & Producing PDF, cos all the essential music making hacks are in there, including our game-changing “Melody Checklist”. STEP 6. NAME New genres need new names. This is not only super fun and creative, but naming your new genre also gives fans a tangible and memorable way to tell their friends about your music. With our parents being Reggae, Djent, Electronic, and Choral, we decided to name our offspring: Djentronic Reggchor. And yeah, there’s very little chance of this new genre catching on, but that’s great, cos it means our genre will remain unique and continue grabbing listeners’ attention. In a time when so many lost their jobs because of the Covid-19 Pandemic…. Job & Health Insurance Loss Come and Go Together; How To Find Affordable Coverage March 2, 2021 -- In December 2020, 66% of Americans who answered a survey said they fear they won’t be able to afford health care this year. Of the 41% of respondents who are very or moderately concerned about health-care costs, 53% are parents with children. The amount of people who were and remain unemployed because of the Covid-19 pandemic remains high. Since most individuals get their health insurance with their jobs, those same folks are also in need of medical coverage. On his regular podcast, Houston based neurologist and founder of the Houston Healthcare Initiative Dr. Steven Goldstein has immediate and affordable medical insurance solutions for those who need coverage.

In my first full year as a solo cleaner, I worked a lot but we had no money. You've heard my story on this podcast a dozen times! We just lost our car to repossession. We had $170,000 in debt and no house! We earned under $2000/mo, lived in a ghetto, had bill collectors calling every day. We lived 5 hours from our closest family and we were new parents. In December 2006, we had no idea how we'd pay for our rent, let alone get a Christmas gift for our 2-year-old Kenny! That's why I'd like to introduce my dear friend Sean Rogers. We were in the Amway business together. After a Nite Owl (business mastermind session after hours at TGIF), Sean gave me a hug and followed it up with the Italian handshake. He had slipped me a $100 bill and said, "Get your son a Christmas present." I was in tears. How did he know we had nothing and couldn't even afford the air we were breathing? My guess is that Sean is a Christian and he was being obedient to what God told him. Teresa was in tears as well when I showed her in the car. It was a miracle. We'd be able to get Kenny the Imaginarium Train Set he wanted, thanks to a friend that was a giver and was well-off financially. The impact of that $100 bill was huge. $1,000 wouldn't do it today. That simple gesture of $100 gave us so much hope in our future and resolve to pay it forward. If I met you on the street and gave you $100, would you cry? Would it change your month, year, or decade? For some, no. But for many others out there, big time. I want to challenge you to grow your business to the point where you can give outrageously. I want you to earn so much that you can give hundreds away and not impact you one bit. But to the ones you gave the cash, their lives were filled with hope. Why else would you be building your business? We are put on this earth to help and love our fellow man. Let's all learn from Sean Rogers and do likewise. Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Soft Glas over Zoom video! Cuban-born singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Soft Glas shares his new single “Prudence and Poise" and the title of his forthcoming LP How Strange due out on March 19th. On “Prudence and Poise,” Soft Glas takes his wide-ranging musical influences that includes Cuban rhythms and styles and combines it with his own dynamic resonance. With stark, lightly poetic lyricism and drifting beats, Soft Glas delivers something relatable and cathartic. Thematically, the song explores how things are often beyond our control and that finding a sense of direction comes with many unexpected turns along the way.Soft Glas says this of his new single:“From a production perspective, it’s special to me because it’s a clear example of how I’ve internalized my roots without necessarily being conscious of it. Growing up in a Cuban household, I was very familiar with traditional Cuban rhythms and styles (though I wasn’t necessarily aware of their distinctions, names, or history). I produced the song instinctively, drawing from some of those rhythms I grew up listening to.A year after I finished this song, I helped my dad (Gonzalo Rubalcaba) produce/engineer his album ‘Viento Y Tiempo,’ a live album with Aymée Nuviola, comprising of new arrangements of traditional Cuban songs. Through working on this project, I learned about those rhythms I had internalized, and realized that I was using a variation of the Danzòn in ‘Prudence & Poise’. It wasn’t completely faithful to the traditional rhythm, but it was clear that the Danzòn had snuck into my subconscious at some point.”In December, Soft Glas shared “Cyclones,” the first single off his forthcoming LP. The track sits on the fringe of the bedroom-pop genre, with wistful, hazy instrumentals and jazz-infused guitar lines. Invigorated by vibrant yet serene melodies, the song is guided along with warm, yearning vocals. Narratively, “Cyclones” echoes the concerns of spending a lifetime in the mirror trying to pick apart all the things you couldn’t change about yourself. The song was accompanied by a day in the life music video featuring photo stills.Joao Gonzalez, who is behind the Soft Glas moniker, is credited as the mixing engineer, post-production editor, and keyboard programmer on the 2021 Grammy nominated 'Best Latin Jazz Album' Viento Y Tiempo - Live at Blue Note Tokyo from Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Aymée Nuviola.Pre-order Soft Glas’ How Strange vinyl due out March 19th here.More info:Growing up Joao idolized his father, renowned jazz-pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and dreamt of becoming a jazz musician himself. While music was ingrained in his DNA, Joao’s own journey wasn’t all that easy as he was denied acceptance to Florida State University’s College of Music. Disenchanted by this news, he shifted his attention in college to Psychology. Joao dealt with imposter syndrome while attempting to keep the dream alive of becoming a full-time musician. After graduation, a spark ignited within. Joao picked up drumming again, relocated to NYC, and stepped into the role of music director and touring musician (Overcoats, Stalking Gia). Inspired by these experiences of working and touring with other artists, Soft Glas’ music explores everyday anxieties all of us tend to deal with. Soft Glas released his debut EP Dos in 2016 and since has released 2016’s Late Bloom, 2017’s Orange Earth, and 2020’s Stunned. Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Edwin Raphael over Zoom video! Edwin Raphael shares his new single “Time to Sink” off his forthcoming EP Staring at Ceilings due out February 26th via Dine Alone Records. The track begins softly, advanced by layered textures of peaceful vocals, sharp horns, refined guitars, and crisp drums. “Time to Sink” embraces stillness even when life continues to shift back and forth with light. In December, Edwin Raphael shared his single "Sea of Things" accompanied by its music video. On “Sea of Things” Edwin gives off Jeff Buckley vibes by bearing the same soulful intensity. It's a gorgeous, striking piece of work attributed to Edwin’s innate talents and sheer efficiency with instrumentation. On the narrative front, “Sea of Things” is an ode to existence and dissociation catalyzed by anxiety. “Sea of Things” is a testament to the chaotic and often times, perplexing nature of the ocean and of living without control. This past fall, Edwin released his first single off the EP “Mild Sanity (feat. Juletta).” Deeply absorbing and incredibly cathartic all at once, Edwin’s languid vocals and atmospheric melodies take listeners’ minds outside the cruelties of the world’s relentless wreckage. “Mild Sanity” is also elevated by NYC pop singer-songwriter Juletta’s ethereal cadence. The track was lauded by Under The Radar, American Songwriter, EARMILK, Culture Collide, Indie Shuffle, and was included on Spotify’s Folk & Friends playlist and NPR’s New Music Friday playlist.Staring at Ceilings is a 5-song EP produced with Marcus Paquin (Arcade Fire, The National, Local Natives) that reflects the spectrum of human indulgence and the cost of our anxieties.More Info:“You can't win if you don't play” is a quote that lives within singer-songwriter Edwin Raphael. Ditching a career path carved out by his father, Edwin is headstrong on finding his own way in a world no longer concerned with archaic traditions. The 25-year-old artist, living in Montreal, Canada, uprooted from Dubai, creates music instilled with spiraling emotion, which resonates on both the shattered and enriching moments in life.Edwin released his debut LP Will You Think of Me Later? in 2019. Prior to that, he released a pair of EPs—Ocean Walk in 2015 and Cold Nights in 2017. With over 14M+ cumulative streams spanning ~175,000 monthly listeners, he’s been featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday Canada, indie pop & chill, Indie Chillout, Lush + Ethereal, Chill Singer-Songwriter, and Folk Favourites playlists. We want to hear from you! On today’s show we’re talking about the link between online and offline and the world of real estate in particular. When I look to see where real estate is going, I look to online innovators. That seems counter-intuitive. After all, we live in an offline world. When we think of the online world, your first thoughts might go to Facebook, or Instagram, or TikTok or ClubHouse. How could those technologies possibly disrupt the world of real estate? It makes no sense. In my view, the disruption to the physical world is going to come from the online world. The catalyst for disruption in real estate won’t come from a new building technology per se. Although there are a number of innovations in technology that are changing the way buildings are designed and constructed. I look to those companies that are upending business using technology. We’re talking about how Travis Kalanick, the founder of Uber, and most recently of Ghost Kitchen startup called Cloud Kitchens. This was merely an idea a year ago. Today, some top chefs in NYC have abandoned their expensive real estate and are serving the take-out market out of commercial kitchens located in less expensive industrial space, rather than the prime location kitchen with the fancy ground floor restaurant dining room attached. I attend a daily meeting with Glenn Sanford, CEO of EXP Realty. You might be wondering what I’m doing hanging out with the CEO of a real estate brokerage. I’m not a real estate agent and don’t want to be. Apart from the word of real estate, there’s no real connection. What sets Glenn apart from others in the space is that he speaks like a software designer. He uses language, terms and metaphors that came out of the world of software development. It’s not an act. He simply exudes it. As we’ve talked about recently, When I look at the systems he has used to build his business, there’s no doubt in my mind that he is thinking scalability, the kind of scalability that can only be matched in an online world. His company has experienced the kind of growth that only a software company can achieve. It would have been near impossible in a bricks and mortar business. It used to be the case that an impressive office with a sprawling lobby and layers of assistants made an impressive first impression for a prospective client, or an aspiring employment candidate. Today, that’s a distant memory. I’ve been using zoom for meetings for several years now. But my use of zoom has expanded dramatically. Even in the past week, I have spent no less than 6 hours a day in zoom meetings on some days. In December of 2019, zoom had about 10 million daily active participants. By March this had grown to 200 million and by April, over 300 million. How did zoom scale their enterprise by a factor of 30 in the span of months? The ease of use of zoom and the excellent performance made this possible. It turns out that Zoom uses Amazon’s web services data center. They’re one of the largest suppliers of third party data services. Amazon’s server farm was easily able to scale the service offering to meet the needs of zoom’s growth. None of these shifts individually represent a major change. But cumulatively, the compound effect of all these changes on the design of real estate is significant. I don’t need to dedicate as much wall space for book cases anymore. How many people used to have a video studio in their homes 20 years ago? Hardly any. Today, I know of dozens. If I was designing a home for this coming decade, I would be designing it differently compared with only a few years ago. Back in the day, homes and apartments used to have a built -in cabinet for the delivery of fresh milk. Today, nobody would even think of that. But a secure e-commerce locker makes a lot of sense. We know that technology is changing rapidly. We have no idea what building technologies will look like in 30 years from now.
We are now halfway through our third season and we want to make sure our amazing community knows what we recently did. In December 2020, we split into two brands, Sales BQ® and House of Revenue™. Looking at the growth and the scale that was brought forth for our clients, we are not accurately describing ourselves with the name Sales BQ®. It was great for the world of sales training and sales coaching but since the work we were now doing deserves a fresh brand. Sales BQ® was founded by the Quota Crusher™ host Mary Grothe in 2017 with a mission to rebuild sales organizations. All of our Quota Crusher brand - sales training, sales coaching podcast, and blog will remain with Sales BQ® . Whereas, all consulting and revenue scaling work has moved to a new brand called House of Revenue™.Connect with Us!Mary Grothe
Thanks for joining us for another season of Lead With We. I couldn’t think of a better guest to kick things off than my dear friend, futurist Sally Uren. Sally runs a leading sustainability non-profit called Forum For The Future that works directly with big brands and business leaders to create global change. Together we discuss the future of humanity (literally), and how we’re seeing very different trajectories play out simultaneously in real-time. And what I particularly love about this conversation is that Sally points to growing movements, such as regenerative agriculture and impact investing, as proof that we can build a positive future through our actions. Sally Uren Sally joined Forum for the Future, then a not-for-profit based solely in the UK, in 2002. Previously Deputy CEO, Sally was appointed Chief Executive in 2013. Since then, she has spearheaded Forum’s mission to create a more sustainable future by catalyzing transformational change in key global systems. Over this period, Sally has overseen Forum’s substantial growth into new markets while honing its focus on ensuring Forum makes a positive contribution to three global challenges: the climate crisis and ensuring the sustainability of our global food system and value chains. Sally oversees the delivery of Forum’s programmatic work through a team of more than 80 sustainability professionals across offices in London, Singapore, New York and Mumbai. As part of this, she works with leading global players, including businesses such as Unilever and Olam, foundations such as the Laudes Foundation, and membership organizations such as Sedex, both in one-to-one partnerships, and also as part of multi-stakeholder collaborations designed to address complex challenges in systems as diverse as food, energy, apparel and shipping. Throughout Dr. Fahs’ childhood, skincare was an obsession and she loved receiving packages that had different skincare products that she could try. After learning the science of skin in medical school, she realized that many of the products that companies sell have ingredients that aren’t so great for our skin, or different skin types. Realizing this, Dr. Fahs felt the desire to create her own box of skincare products, but one’s that were specifically recommended by Dermatologists and tailored for that person’s skin. In December 2020, Dr. Fahs and her husband officially launched Dermy Doc Box and in this episode, we delve in with Dr. Fahs on her journey in creating this business, what she has and is currently learning, and advice to anyone interested in entrepreneurship. A new mural going up on the side of the Eighth Street Deli Mini Mart in Astoria, New York, honors the life of Moustafa Kassem, an Egyptian American taxi driver who died in an Egyptian prison. The art was sponsored by human rights advocacy group, The Freedom Initiative, as a symbol of its renewed commitment to ensuring the US holds Egypt accountable. That’s despite news this week that Egypt jailed several relatives of The Freedom Initiative’s founder, Mohamed Soltan, likely in response to Soltan’s criticism of Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi. Related: 10 years after the Arab uprisings, Egypt at 'lowest point' for human rights “[Moustafa Kassem's] death sort of revived our reasoning for existence. ... His name will be remembered not just as a failure of US foreign policy, but to remind people that it's not just him.”Mohamed Soltan, founder, Freedom Initiative, Washington, DC“His death sort of revived our reasoning for existence,” Soltan said of Kassem. “His name will be remembered not just as a failure of US foreign policy, but to remind people that it's not just him.” Soltan said that Egyptian police responding to a sit-in arrested Kassem in 2013 when he was visiting family. He was held in pretrial detention for over five years before being convicted and sentenced to a 15-year prison term as part of a mass trial with more than 700 other defendants; no personalized evidence was ever presented against him.“It's very similar to stories that happen here especially with the wave of protests we had in June and July. ... I, like probably a lot of people, also thought that this wouldn't be able to happen because he was an American citizen.”Brandi Jones, Black Village Arts“It's very similar to stories that happen here especially with the wave of protests we had in June and July,” said the mural’s lead artist Brandi Jones, of Black Village Arts, a group that promotes art education. “I, like probably a lot of people, also thought that this wouldn't be able to happen because he was an American citizen.” A colorful mural honoring the life of the late Egyptian American Moustafa Kassem. Credit: Courtesy of Freedom Initiative That’s what Kassem thought, too — that being American meant the US government would eventually see to his release. “I remember the first time I laid eyes on him,” said Soltan, who met Kassem in an Egyptian prison. “People were like, ‘This is the other American that's in the prison.’ I remember thinking, “What the hell is a man like that doing in a place like this?””Soltan, an Egyptian American who grew up in the Midwest, remembers Kassem as a small, soft-spoken man with a gentle soul, clad in a white prison jumpsuit. Soltan was also arrested in 2013 for his involvement in protests against the Egyptian government. He was tortured as a high-profile political prisoner. Soltan wrote a letter to then-President Barack Obama that was published in The New York Times, and the administration secured his release in 2015. Soltan had to leave Kassem behind. “I promised him that I will do everything in my power to try and get him out of prison,” Soltan said.He started The Freedom Initiative in Washington, DC, and lobbied incessantly. Former Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and President Donald Trump all called for Kassem’s release. In December 2019, Soltan said the State Department told him they were close to freeing him. Soltan called Kassem’s family to cautiously share the good news. Related: Canada urged to investigate the death of Baloch human rights activistBut Kassem died before anything could happen. He went on a hunger strike to protest for his release and his body gave out on Jan. 13, 2020. He was 54 years old. Soltan called Kassem’s family again — this time, to offer condolences.“And his teenage daughter was rightfully screaming at me. She said, ‘You told us he was going to get released. You told us. You just called us last week. You told us there was progress,’” he said. “And I literally had no words. All I can say is ‘I'm sorry.’” On the one year anniversary of his wrongful death in Egypt’s prisons, Freedom Initiative memorialized Moustafa Kassem, and the thousands that remain resilient in prisons in Egypt with a photo gallery at Busboys and Poets in Washington. Credit: Courtesy of Freedom Initative Soltan went into a period of deep introspection and nearly closed The Freedom Initiative. He felt defeated. In Egypt, his father was jailed after Soltan sued former Egyptian Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi for his role in torturing Soltan when he was imprisoned in Egypt. Mural honoring the life of prisoner of conscience Moustafa Kassem in Queens, New York, commissioned by the Freedom Initiative and painted by Brandi Jones of Black Village Arts. Credit: Courtesy of Brandi Jones But then Soltan said he remembered that there are tens of thousands of other Moustafa Kassems — prisoners still in Egyptian jails, including a few other Americans that Soltan represents. They relaunched The Freedom Initiative with a new logo that features a silhouette of Kassem’s face. And, they commissioned the mural in Kassem’s hometown, which draws links to human rights causes elsewhere, like the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong, and the Black Lives Matter movement in the US. “We are getting beaten by the same batons. We are getting shot at by the same ammunition,” Soltan said. “Whether it's Ferguson or Cairo, our struggles are the same.”The Biden administration has been critical of the Egyptian government, and there is growing bipartisan support for a tougher stance against the Sisi government. Soltan said the US should use its annual $1.4 billion in aid to Egypt’s military as leverage to hold the country accountable. Editor's note: A previous version of this audio story referred to a bodega instead of a deli and incorrectly stated that Moustafa Kassem's wife and children are in Egypt.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has spoken about his desire to turn over a new leaf with Europe, but that might not happen without repairing the damage he’s done to Turkish democracy. Last November was when Erdogan first showed any openness to improving relations with the European Union (E.U), stating “We see ourselves nowhere else but in Europe.” In a phone call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on January 10, the two discussed improving relations in what the E.U President called a “good exchange.” Among the topics covered according to a readout from Erdogan’s office was a discussion on how to move forward on Turkey’s stalled bid to join the bloc. Behind any negotiations about improving relations is deep disagreements over the state of Turkish democracy after two decades under Erdogan. In December, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled that Turkey must release opposition leader Selahattin Demirtas from custody over what it considered politically-motivated terrorism charges. A year earlier, the ECHR also ordered the release of civil society activist Osman Kavala from custody on similar grounds, but Erdogan has refused in both cases to respect either ruling. Kati Piri, a member of the European Parliament from the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D), does not believe that Erdogan should be obliged to his “new leaf” if that means ignoring his continued erosion of human rights in Turkey. “I do not understand how Ankara thinks it will reset the agenda with the European Union,” Piri tol Ahval in a recent podcast interview. “They know what they have to do in order to reset relations, but I haven’t seen any of that seriously examined in Turkey.”

Earlier this month, a community meeting in Longmeadow was zoom-bombed by someone shouting racial slurs and drawing a swastika across the screen. In December, the Martin King Junior Community Presbyterian Church, a historic church in the heart of Springfield's Black community, was set ablaze in an arson attack. Eric spoke with Bishop Talbert Swan, Senior Pastor at Spring of Hope Church of God and Christ and President of the Greater Springfield NAACP about these recent events, along with police reform efforts, vaccine equity, and the challenges of ministering during COVID-19. This is that conversation.

In December 1965, a fireball streaked across at least 8 US states and parts of Canada. It was witnessed by many, including folks in Kecksburg, Pennsylvania -- a small village southeast of Pittsburgh -- who swear the object crash landed in a patch of woods. Nothing was *officially* found, but theories abound. Was it a spy satellite? An extraterrestrial craft? Or something even MORE surprising...

We finally begin the final DBT module. Drone music's slow moving ambience and long repetitive tones position it as a soothing genre, suitable for relaxation, meditation, and therapeutic practices. Drone music can also contain harsher vibes, just as I have found therapy can also produce anxieties and traumas as it attempts to lessen them. Drone Therapy is a comedy performance series about mental health and treatment access. It began as a Youtube series in 2015 while I was struggling in a free three month Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) program, and has continued as Drone Therapy Live, which takes Drone Therapy out of my bedroom to venues, galleries, or festivals, sometimes with guests. From the end of 2020 into early 2021, the U.S. was locked on a pathway of continually breaking and re-breaking COVID-19 records. In December, more than 200,000 new infections in a single day were reported for the first time. Only about a month later, the country hit a somber new record: 300,000 diagnoses in a single day. After months near those dizzyingly high marks, daily case numbers have fallen dramatically. On Feb.
NOTE: Part of this conversation discusses sexual assault, which may be triggering to listeners. As the second impeachment trial of Donald Trump began in the Senate this week, Emily interviewed Robbie Kaplan about the ways that Trump is able to be held accountable now that he left office, which includes impeachment. In December, Robbie and her firm filed a Supreme Court brief defending the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania against claims of election fraud. The firm is also representing Mary Trump, President Trump’s cousin, and E. Jean Carroll, who has accused the former president of sexual harassment. Every week, Your Political Podcast brings you smart, but bite-size conversations with women at the seat of power and activism. With a new Presidential administration and new Congress, there is a significant amount of work to do cleaning up the bad policies of the last administration and enacting new ideas into law. We covered a lot of ground in this interview from their first race experience all the way to how they set up their own Swimrun during the pandemic. Every Wednesday on the Hippie Haven podcast, learn how to live harmoniously with yourself, others & the planet. We talk about all things hippie, including eating vegan, reducing your trash, starting an ethical business, eco-activism, gardening, beekeeping, tiny house living, and so much more.My guests today are Dr. Durka and Suthan Naganayagam. They created Niki's Natural Wipes after experiencing diaper rashes and irritations with their first son, Niki. With backgrounds in healthcare science and technology, they spent many long nights researching organic substances that might be able to moisturize, soothe, and prevent bacterial infections from effecting their son. After months of testing, they stumbled on a unique combination of organic ingredients that when applied to baby wipes led to Niki never experiencing another diaper rash.Niki's was created out of the desperation of two parents, wanting to alleviate the pain that their newborn infant was suffering from with a natural solution. Niki's Natural Wipes are the world's only natural baby wipes infused with organic coconut oil and menuca honey essence. The first of their kind baby wipes, which have earned one of the highest certifications from the environmental working group are now available for the first time in the U.S. Though created to help parents battling endless skin irritation. Niki's Natural Wipes are also an imperative solution for anyone committed to eliminating toxins from babies' lives. Today, we talk about how Niki's began their sustainability practices and the ingredients to look out for in traditional baby products.Links mentioned in this episode: Niki's Natural Wipes websiteNiki's Facebook + Instagram + Twitter + YouTube + LinkedInSupport the Bestowed Essentials crowdfunding campaign to help us create new sustainable products, improve our packaging, increase our accessibility and to provide more jobs for people with disabilities. The Hippie Haven Podcast is hosted by Callee - a zero waste activist & business owner. In December 2020, FireEye discovered a supply chain attack against the SolarWinds Orion network management system. The impact of this event has caused the cybersecurity community to reevaluate how we think about threats coming from the software supply chain. At Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory we have been developing software assurance tools for many years to automate the analysis of software to enable asset owners and operators to make sound decisions about the software in their environments. In this presentation, I will describe this effort, talk about some of our tools, and discuss ways to mitigate future supply chain attacks.
In December 2020, 140,000 people lost their job, all of them held by women.* This is leading more and more women to consider how they take their financial and career future into their own hands, turning towards starting entrepreneurial ventures. Stepping off your steady, salaried career isn’t as easy or as quick as turning off the ‘spicket’ but it is, 100% doable if you create a plan, structure and become disciplined. You too can start a side hustle and grow it.In this episode, we give you some thoughts, strategies and success stories around starting your side business.Kill the term Side Hustle. We all need it stop calling it that. We get tired hearing it and we are already hustling to our max! You don’t have to hustle to build a business. You CAN without sacrifice: Get real about what your beliefs are around ‘what you have to give up’ to build a business and shift that to ‘what you get to do’ when you build a business.Mentally Prepare for the Long Haul: This is a slow build, a process and with the entire human species not having patience because of our instant gratification world, if you go into the business expecting miracles, quickly, you are going to give up before you get momentum.Redefining Your Priorities: You need to scrutinize your free time or your time outside of work and really consider what’s the most important and your Ultimate Why for starting the side biz. Find Your Time not Find THE Time: When are you most creative? When do you feel in the flow? A huge reason why people who want to create a business fail is because they work on it at the wrong time. You need to be in alignment with how your internal rhythm works and put your business in the slots where you are most productive.Devise a Plan: When time is scarce, you need to develop several containers of goals. As we move into the second year of the Covid19 pandemic we're starting to learn more about the impact that so called 'long covid' is having on patients. Long hauler covid patients are people who recover from Covid19 itself but are left with symptoms of the disease that linger and flare up. Some of those symptoms are similar to those experienced by some patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, or ME. Emeritus Professor at Otago University Warren Tate has spent years studying ME. In December last year his team proved that ME, or CFS, is not psychosomatic but has a biological basis. This was a groundbreaking finding and this new research on long haul Covid 19 will be pursuing similar territory.
In December, the department of small business development released the National Small Enterprise Amendment Bill for public comment. Chapter 3A, which establishes a small enterprise ombudsman service and grants far-reaching powers to the minister of small business development to determine and prohibit “unfair trading practices'', has come in for some criticism from small business organisations. And for its lack of consultation. Michael Avery spoke to Elize Koekemoer, Director Policy and Research at Department of Small Business Development; Kganki Matabane, CEO of the Black Business Council; Alan Mukoki, CEO of the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry; & John Dludlu, executive for strategy and public affairs at the Small Business Institute, about the Bill and how it can be improved.

It’s a case that has been covered and picked apart for years, yet there are still many questions that linger. In December 2012, Houston police responded to a brutal murder scene - Jim Melgar was found dead in his bedroom, while his wife of 32 years, Sandra Melgar, was tied up in a bathroom closet. Sandra told investigators she had suffered a seizure and didn’t know who killed her husband and locked her up. Investigators didn’t believe her, and she was charged and later convicted of his murder. Is Sandra a cold-blooded killer, or is an innocent person in prison? Sponsors in this episode: Care/Of - Court Junkies can get 50% off your first Care/of Order.
