These scholarships, ranging from $500 to $2,000 annually, are funded by 146 colleges and universities. Recipients were selected from 2025 National Merit Finalists based on academic excellence, recommendations, and test scores. The winners, representing schools like Lassiter, Walton, and Wheeler High, plan to pursue diverse fields such as engineering, law, genetics, and marine biology. By the program’s end, over 6,930 students will have received scholarships totaling nearly $26 million. STORY 2: Judge Pauses State Sanctions put on Cobb, Cities Sanctions cutting off state funding for Cobb County and its seven cities have been paused by a Cobb Superior Court ruling. The sanctions stemmed from Mableton and Cobb County missing a May 31 deadline to finalize a Service Delivery Strategy agreement. Mableton initially rejected the $9.5 million deal but later approved a revised version, allowing more time for payment. The court ruled the sanctions would harm Cobb’s 800,000 residents, halting state support for infrastructure, public safety, and more. If the agreement is finalized soon, sanctions could lift by July 1. Mableton plans to create a special service district to fund its payment. STORY 3: Cobb Advances 300-Apartment Development Amid School District Concerns The Cobb County Planning Commission approved a 300-unit apartment development on South Cobb Parkway near Cumberland Mall, replacing an aging hotel. Developer Alliance Residential plans a five-story building with amenities like a pool, gym, and co-working space, targeting young professionals, downsizers, and seniors. Despite concerns from the Cobb School District about overcrowding at Teasley Elementary, the commission voted unanimously to advance the project. Alliance argued the development would generate $1.19 million in annual tax revenue and suggested rezoning the area to Brumby Elementary, which has capacity. STORY 5: Pedestrian Hit by Two Cars in Marietta, Sustains Life-Threatening Injuries A pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries after being struck by two vehicles Monday night on Powder Springs St. in Marietta. The incident occurred around 11:26 p.m. near a QuikTrip gas station when the man, crossing in a crosswalk but against the traffic signal, was hit by a 2020 Mercedes Benz and then a 2015 Nissan. Both drivers remained on the scene and are cooperating with police. Video evidence from Cobb County Police supports the investigation, and no charges are expected. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact Marietta Police Investigator D. Lester. Break: INGLES 1 STORY 6: Austell Appoints First Woman Police Chief in Cobb County Shameta Jones-Harrell has been appointed as Austell’s new police chief, becoming the first woman to hold the position in Cobb County history. The City Council unanimously approved her promotion, praising her leadership. A 25-year law enforcement veteran, Jones-Harrell holds a criminal justice degree and has served in various roles, including deputy chief in Austell and major in Brookhaven. She has managed multiple divisions, from community engagement to training. Jones-Harrell has been interim chief since March and officially steps into the role following former Chief Scott Hamilton’s resignation. Capt. Cecil Lloyd Garett will now serve as deputy chief. STORY 7: Georgia Department of Driver Services Implements Federal Commercial Medical Certificate Mandate Starting June 18, 2025, Georgia CDL holders requiring medical certifications must have their Medical Certificates submitted directly to the FMCSA by their Medical Examiner, as per the Medical Certification Integration Final Rule. The Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) will no longer accept hard copies via mail, fax, email, online, or in-person. Medical providers will input the information into the National Registry, which FMCSA will transmit to DDS. Existing certificates remain valid until expiration. DDS advises customers to create an Online Services Account for easy monitoring and to handle transactions like license replacements or address changes online. We’ll have closing comments after this. At the end of Re-Cross Examination, Maureen Harnett, the forensic analyst, wanted to "correct something for the record" from their previous testimony. This implies there might have been an error or omission in their earlier statements that they feel needs to be addressed. However, the court and Special Prosecutor, Hank Brennan, did not seem inclined to allow the correction at that moment. Judge Cannone let them know all of the questions that needed to be asked of them was complete and they were free to go.Next, Dr. Irini Scordi-Bello, Coroner & Medical Examiner, took the stand! A significant portion of the testimony revolves around the coroner's finding that the manner of John O'Keefe's death was "undetermined." This term is defined as when the information pointing to one manner of death is not more compelling than other reasonable possibilities, or when the death investigation lacks sufficient information to opine on a manner of death at the time the death certificate is signed.The coroner stated she examined John O'Keefe's lower extremities as part of the protocol in cases of suspected impact with a motor vehicle. She did not find any evidence of an impact site. The Prosecution asked the coroner repeatedly if she was aware of various pieces of information, including statements that Karen Read allegedly made, such as "I hit him," that she didn't know how she cracked her tail light, and that people had been drinking. The coroner confirms that she was aware of most of this information before making her determination. Despite knowing all this information, Dr. Scordi-Bello still concluded that the manner of death was undetermined.The coroner recalls two individuals being present at the autopsy. Initially, she doesn't remember their names, but after looking at a log, she identifies them as Mr. Keefe and Mr. Connor. There's confusion, because Trooper Connor Keefe's testimony is that he attended the autopsy alone but the person next to him looks a lot like Former Trooper Michael Proctor.After the Jury was dismissed, disputes over expert witnesses involve issues of late discovery, changing reports, timing discrepancies, and procedural fairness. Defense attorney, Robert Alessi, is concerned that the Commonwealth is trying to adjust Aperture, their expert's testimony, to align with other witness, Ian Whiffin. This new report shifts the estimated time of impact from between 12:31:38am-12:31:43am to 12:32:16am. The Commonwealth, in turn, argues that they need more time to review the defense's voluminous reports from ARCCA and to ensure their expert can provide a complete and accurate analysis. These conflicts are creating significant tension and procedural challenges in the trial. On January 10, 2019, the bodies of 37-year-old Nichol Olsen, along with her 2 daughters, 16-year-old Alexa Montez and 10-year-old London Bribiescas were found in the upscale Anaqua Springs Ranch home of Nichol's boyfriend, Charlie Wheeler. The Medical Examiner ruled this was a case of murder suicide, where Nichol killed her two daughters and then herself. Dr. Deirdre Amaro, the Chief Medical Examiner of the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner (OME), believes in the strong ties between solving the mysteries of how people die and how this critical work helps to protect the living. She has a unique role in that she actively does the post-mortem exam, looks at things under a microscope, and analyzes toxicology results while also stepping into her executive role and managing recruiting, hiring, training, and day-to-day operations. She is an amazing example of doing this AND being that -- her job requires completely different skill sets, and she is doing them all. Experiences of bias may manifest in access to learning opportunities as well as in quantitative ratings and qualitative comments describing performance. This bias interferes with learners' developmental progress through training and has consequences for their future careers and the patients they may serve. Solutions to address bias are needed for individual faculty and leaders designing and implementing education systems. This session will review the literature on the causes and consequences of bias in assessment of learner performance in medical education. Dr Karen Hauer will discuss recommendations to avoid bias in assessment drawn from the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation Conference on Ensuring Fairness in Medical Education Assessment: Conference Recommendations Report. A Tennessee man who initially claimed his wife died by suicide was sentenced Tuesday after ultimately confessing to her killing in a shocking turn of events. Donovan Holt, 33, pleaded guilty in November to reckless homicide, tampering with evidence, and false reporting in the death of his wife, April Holt, 29. He was sentenced to two years and one month in prison, followed by eight years in community corrections. Police found April Holt unresponsive on July 31, 2023, in the bathroom of the couple's Cane Ridge home, a suburb of Nashville. A plastic bag had been tightly taped around her neck, and she was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Initially, the Medical Examiner's Office ruled her death a suicide by suffocation, but that ruling was later changed to homicide by strangulation following persistent efforts by the victim's mother, Jamie Dickerson, to uncover the truth. “I knew that April was unhappy. She requested a divorce two weeks prior, and she was dead two weeks later,” Dickerson said. She also noted that her daughter's bruises on her wrists, neck, ankles, and thighs were initially overlooked as evidence. The case took a dramatic turn nearly a year later in June 2024, when Donovan Holt shockingly confessed to Dickerson during a FaceTime call. He admitted to strangling April during what he claimed was a sex act and panicked afterward. “He just goes into how he killed her, and he described how he killed her,” Dickerson said. “How he strangled her and that he didn't know what to do.” Authorities arrested Holt in San Antonio, Texas, on September 19, 2024. He later confessed to Metropolitan Nashville Police Department Cold Case Unit detectives. Dickerson has since launched a GoFundMe campaign in April's memory, raising funds for a grief center in Nashville and to support her daughter's two young children. While some have criticized the sentence as too lenient for the nature of the crime, the judge ruled that after serving his two-year prison term, Holt will remain under eight years of strict community supervision. Three men police say died of overdoses in Durham sparked a WRAL Investigation into the delay in their autopsy results. Timestamps: (7:57) - Poisoning Cases In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss two cases where men were possibly drugged to death by women. Sports reporter Adan Manzano (27)  was found dead with no signs of trauma in his New Orleans hotel room in February 2025.  Adan had been in the city to cover the upcoming Super Bowl.  When police began investigating, they discovered Adan was last seen with a female ‘career criminal,'  Danette Colbert.   Danette has a history of drugging and robbing men. It was discovered that Danette used Adan's credit card after his death. His cause of death is still pending with the Medical Examiner. Indiana man Harold Allen died in 2022 from what was initially thought to be natural causes.  It was only after his step-daughter, Ashley Jones, staged a robbery that his death was investigated.   It came to light that Harold was likely poisoned to death with ethylene glycol by his wife Marsha and Ashley.  The women tried multiple times to kill Harold with varying substances before they were successful. After Marsha was questioned by police, she took her own life. I knew this was going to be a lot of laughs when I was going to interview Dr. Kollmann, the author of Never Suck on a Dead Man's Hand: Curious Adventures of a CSI. Dana Kollmann is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminal Justice. The case of Ellen Greenberg, a Philadelphia teacher who was found dead with 20 stab wounds in 2011, has taken a significant turn as the medical examiner who ruled her death a suicide now admits it should be classified as "something other than suicide." For 14 years, Greenberg's parents, Josh and Sandee Greenberg, have fought to overturn the controversial ruling, arguing that the forensic evidence points to homicide. The latest revelation comes just days before a civil trial in which they are suing Philadelphia city officials for allegedly mishandling the case and covering up what they believe to be their daughter's murder. Ellen was just 27 when she was found inside her Manayunk apartment on January 26, 2011, with multiple stab wounds, including 10 to the back of her head and neck. Her fiancé, Sam Goldberg, reported finding her after he returned home and forced open the locked apartment door. Philadelphia Medical Examiner Marlon Osbourne initially ruled the death a homicide based on the severity and number of wounds. However, police pushed back on this determination, and without public explanation, Osbourne reversed his ruling to suicide. Now, in a sworn court filing, Osbourne has backtracked, stating, “It is my professional opinion Ellen's manner of death should be designated as something other than suicide.” He cited new information, including questions about whether her fiancé was seen entering the apartment before calling 911, whether the door was truly forced open, and whether Ellen's body had been moved before authorities arrived. While Ellen's fiancé has never been accused of wrongdoing by law enforcement, her parents remain convinced the case was mishandled. Their attorney, Joe Podraza, sees Osbourne's admission as a major breakthrough. “To us, it means that we've accomplished our role that Ellen did not commit a suicide,” Podraza said. “Here you have the original pathologist, finally, after 14 years and five years of litigation, acknowledging that her manner of death should not be suicide.” The Greenbergs have long maintained that forensic evidence disproves suicide, citing medical reports that at least one of Ellen's wounds was inflicted post-mortem, making self-infliction impossible. Despite these findings, the Chester County District Attorney's Office announced last year that it would not pursue criminal charges, stating that there was insufficient evidence to prove a crime beyond a reasonable doubt. However, because there is no statute of limitations for homicide in Pennsylvania, charges could still be filed in the future. Meanwhile, the Greenbergs are pressing forward in their legal battle to have Ellen's official cause of death changed from suicide to undetermined. A Philadelphia judge ruled Friday that they may take three city officials to trial, including Osbourne, former chief medical examiner Sam Gulino, and homicide detective John McNamee, for emotional distress related to the alleged cover-up. Jury selection in the trial is set to begin February 3. Ellen's father, Joshua Greenberg, remains hopeful. “I'm hoping we're going to prove that Ellen did not commit suicide,” he said. “That's what this is all about. Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky, the Florida surgeon accused of mistakenly removing the liver of a Muscle Shoals man during a surgery intended to remove his spleen, has surrendered his medical license in Alabama. On Monday, the Alabama Medical Licensure Commission accepted Dr. Shaknovsky's full license surrender, weeks after the death of 70-year-old William "Bill" Bryan. The commission had previously suspended his license in October, citing concerns that his continued practice posed “an immediate danger to his patients and the public.” Bryan and his wife, Beverly, were in Destin, Florida, on Aug. 19 when Bryan experienced pain on his left side. A Florida doctor diagnosed him with a spleen issue and insisted on performing emergency surgery. Despite Beverly's plea to return home for treatment in Alabama, the doctor warned that Bryan would “bleed to death” if moved. On Aug. 21, Dr. Shaknovsky performed the operation but removed Bryan's liver instead of his spleen, resulting in Bryan's death on the operating table. A pathologist later confirmed that the organ labeled as Bryan's spleen was, in fact, his liver. The tragedy has triggered investigations by both the Florida Department of Health and the Walton County Sheriff's Office. Florida health officials suspended Dr. Shaknovsky's medical license on Sept. 24 after reviewing this case and another in May 2023, where he allegedly removed part of a patient's pancreas instead of the adrenal gland during surgery, causing permanent harm. Dr. Shaknovsky, licensed in Alabama since 2016, has faced prior allegations of surgical errors. According to attorney Joe Zarzaur, this was not the first case of a wrong-site surgery involving Dr. Shaknovsky; a previous case from 2023 was reportedly settled. “Everyone knows you can't live without your liver. It's like pulling out someone's heart,” Beverly said. The Alabama Board of Medical Examiners filed the complaint leading to the suspension and ultimate surrender of Shaknovsky's license. “Our duty is to ensure that physicians licensed in Alabama meet the highest standards of patient care,” said William M.
