In this episode of the Crack House Chronicles Donnie and Dale speak with two members of Crime Stoppers of Cleveland County NC, Jeff Yates and Sgt. Brad Benson. Cleveland County Crimestoppers is a non-profit organization that helps law enforcement obtain needed information for the investigation of crime. Crimestoppers is an independent board that works with law enforcement in gathering information and giving rewards for the information provided. The system for gathering this information keeps the caller completely anonymous and unknown to both the board and law enforcement. Cleveland County Crimestoppers provides information to all Cleveland County law enforcement agencies. Sergeant Brad Benson at the Shelby Police Department is responsible for gathering and distributing all tip information to the appropriate agencies and to provide information to the local board as the law enforcement coordinator for the board. The board meets monthly to discuss business and make recommendations or approve tips for the previous month. Crimestoppers play an important role in gathering needed information to extend cases for further investigation. All law enforcement agencies within Cleveland County are fortunate to have a local board that is willing to make an effort to reduce crime in our area. By scanning the QR Code below, a person is taken to the anonymous tip information page that will allow information, photos, and videos about a case to be uploaded to the police for their investigation. If the information helps solve a crime, the tipster may collect reward money paid by Crime Stoppers - all anonymously! We pay up to $1000 for such information dependent on the severity of the crime. A person may also call the anonymous Tip Line 704-481-8477 to provide information. As a non-profit organization, Crime Stoppers is reliant entirely on donations to fund reward money to tipsters who provide information that leads to an arrest. In the early hours of March 4, 2024, college student Caleb Harris was awake with his roommates, meeting their new dog, playing with her outside, and taking her out for a walk. Caleb stayed up later while his roommates went to bed. He messaged a friend, ordered food delivery, and then disappeared. The following morning when his roommates saw that all of his belongings were still at home, his food untouched, and his car in the driveway, they reported him missing. Update: On the evening of June 24th, human remains were discovered in a water lift station in Corpus Christi not far from Caleb's apartment. At this time, CCPD says there is no confirmation that the remains are connected to Caleb's disappearance, but a medical examiner will ultimately make that determination. Because there has been no formal identification, I ask that we do not speculate and keep Caleb's family in our thoughts at this time. St. Louis Public Radio has obtained thousands of pages of responses from a tip line created launched last year by Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey. Although intended to collect complaints about gender affirming care, the records show that its first respondents used the tip line to criticize Bailey and the tip line itself. St. Louis on the Air producer Danny Wicentowski describes the records he obtained, and the tip line's impact on Missouri's trans population.
Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey opened a tip line last year to get information about care of transgender people that could be considered abusive or illegal. St. Louis On The Air Producer Danny Wicentowski submitted a sunshine request for what was sent in during the first 48 hours it was open. He spoke with Elaine Cha about what he found: that most of the input was in favor of transgender care and critical of Bailey.

In this episode, Kelly recounts the chilling story of Amy St. Laurent, a young woman who vanished in 2001 after a night out. Amy's determination for a fulfilling life was evident until her abrupt disappearance following a night spent with Eric Rubright in Portland, post her breakup with boyfriend Richard. Eric's dubious actions and testimony caught police attention, prompting Jeffrey Gorman, another person present that evening, to disclose crucial details under peer influence. Gorman corroborated Eric's version of events, intensifying the search for Amy despite inconclusive polygraph results, leaving her family in anguish.Kelly covers the unsettling events surrounding Amy's vanishing, implicating Russ - who offered Amy a ride from a discomforting party - as a prime suspect. Russ's evasive demeanor, refusal of a polygraph, and inconsistencies in his roommates' statements unveiled a harrowing narrative involving assault, drugging, and a fatal shooting. Russ's erratic behavior, confession to his mother, subsequent arrest, and a 60-year prison sentence ultimately served justice, despite his mother's efforts to retract her statement, emphasizing the tragic injustice Amy endured.Timestamps:0:03:41 Amy's High School and College Dreams0:06:46 Amy's Night Out in 20010:10:06 Eric Rubright's Confusion and Concern0:17:56 Police Press Conference and Investigation0:20:50 Tip Line and Jeffrey "Russ" Gorman's Call0:23:32 Uncomfortable Departure0:24:37 Polygraph Decline0:26:51 Suspicious Details0:28:32 Applying Pressure0:30:20 Suspicious Detail0:32:16 Search Initiates0:35:20 Tool Borrowing0:37:33 Cadaver Dog Discovery0:43:03 Disturbing Confession0:46:38 Compelled Testimony 0:48:37 Sentencing ReactionCheck out Factor! Deputy Sheriff Susan Welch-Rodriguez trail-blazed in her work on the streets of Dallas, Texas for over four and a half decades of hair-raising adventures, starting in the late 1970s through present day. Susan has some great stories from her time on the job inlcuding instances of extreme sexism she endured when she joined the force in the late 1970's. Her suspenseful memoir, From Bulletproof Vest to the Armor of God: She's a County Mountie, follows Susan as she understands the criminal mindset and how that led her deep behind the razor wire in His majesty's service, taking the Gospel of Jesus Christ to prisoners, encountering those she had apprehended decades earlier. According to the records from the court and reporting from the Idaho Statesman, Bryan Kohberger's court-appointed public counsel was defending a parent of one of the four victims of the Moscow stabbing before she took on his case. Kohberger is suspected of killing all four of the victims of the Moscow stabbing. On January 5, Anne Taylor, chief of the Kootenai County Public Defender's Office, filed a notice of attorney withdrawal on behalf of the parent in Kootenai County Court. This was the same day that Kohberger made his first court appearance in Idaho, which took place in Latah County. The parent was already found guilty of unrelated criminal crimes and given a sentence. In that case, as well as another one in which the parent is facing two felony charges, the public defender's office decided to withdraw its representation in favor of a local criminal defense attorney who has no connection to either Taylor or the county's public defender's office. In the paperwork filed with the court, the new lawyer is referred to as the "conflict public defender." Monday, February 13, 2017, was an unusually warm day for Delphi, Indiana. 14-year-old Libby German and her 13-year-old best friend Abby Williams wanted to take advantage of the nice weather while it lasted. They asked Libby's older sister, Kelsi German, to drive them to the Delphi Historic Trail so they could go hiking. In the small town of Delphi, there really isn't much else to do. "I remember us just being so happy in the car and listening to Twenty-One Pilots, and the windows were open, and it was just so warm," German said. "And she got out of the car and told me she loved me." Kelsi dropped the girls off at around 1:00 pm. Abby and Libby agreed to meet back at the trailhead at 3:00 so Libby's Dad, Derrick German, could pick them up. When he showed up at the trailhead, the girls were not there to meet him. He called Libby's phone, but she didn't answer, so he started searching the immediate area. There was no sign of Libby or Abby anywhere. Police were notified that the girls were missing. Officers, family members, and volunteers scoured the trails for Abby and Libby, but they were nowhere to be found. The search was called off at around midnight - it was too dark to safely continue. In the morning, the search started up again. Within hours, the bodies of Abby and Libby were found at the bottom of a hill, approximately one-half mile upstream from the Monon High Bridge. They'd been murdered. 5 years later, the case remains unsolved. Anyone with information is asked to call the Tip Line at 765-822-3535. Callers can remain anonymous. You can also submit tips online at abbyandlibbytip@cacoshrf.com.
