In 2014, Nathan Shannon was working for a community land trust in Georgia, building affordable housing. But following his interest in behavioral economics, he attended the Behavior, Energy, and Climate Change conference. That event piqued his interest in how and why consumers make economic decisions related to their homes, and that led him to the Smart Energy Consumer Collaborative (SECC), a nonprofit that surveys energy consumers in North America and works across the industry to share best practices in consumer engagement. One of the key insights he brought to SECC — where he is now president and CEO — is that housing affordability is tied inextricably to energy affordability. That's evident in SECC's research, too. This week on With Great Power, Nathan discusses the findings of SECC's latest consumer survey and Modern Energy Messaging report. It shows that as energy costs have risen in recent years, consumers are less motivated by environmental messaging — and what it takes for energy providers to keep consumers engaged in clean energy programs. You can learn more about SECC's research here. This podcast is produced by GridX in partnership with Latitude Studios. GridX is the Enterprise Rate Platform that modern utilities rely on to usher in our clean energy future.
We are excited to welcome our guest speaker, Elder Will Penick, to Azure Hills. He is the Ministerial Director at the Southeastern California Conference (SECC). Will loves Jesus and is blessed to serve our pastors in SECC. He has a passion to share the gospel in a divisive public space and encourages the church in growing as disciples, not just members. Will currently is living in Riverside with his amazing wife, Connie, and their daughter, Ariella, and son, Liam. He enjoys sports (Go Warriors), good food, and spending time with his family in his free time and a little golf when he can fit it in. The New Testament scholar for everyone, NT Wright, spelled out the human predicament. “God has always wanted us; the question is do we want God?” We have a choice to hold onto the vineyard we protect or the answers we already have or be open to the new possibilities that are found in Christ. -Elder Will Penick Ministerial Director, SECC

When it comes to offering unique programs and key opportunities for upgrades, the utility industry has typically seen the lowest hanging fruit at commercial buildings or with homeowners in the residential sector. These customers own and operate their buildings, they are the ones solely paying the power bills, and they have the authority (and often the means) to invest in upgrades like efficiency improvements, on-site generation and energy storage, and more. For too long, though, that has left an unfortunate blind spot for key utility programs: renters in the residential sector. Households that rent their homes have been the least tapped into traditionally by utilities because they don't have the aforementioned advantages, but the unfortunate irony is that these are the customers that often carry the most significant energy burden and could thus most benefit from assistance to bring down their power bills. Addressing the unique characteristics, needs, and opportunities of the home rental market has gained favor recently, even leading to the Smart Energy Consumer Collaborative (SECC) publishing their report "Understanding the Needs and Wants of Renters." This study has already become a key tool for numerous utilities to reevaluate how they were approaching this key demographic. To highlight the findings of this study, podcast host Jason Price and producer Matt Chester are joined by SECC's CEO, Nathan Shannon. To really drive home the impact this area of study has on the utilities, they are also joined by Elizabeth Moore, Manager of Commercial Energy Solutions at Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to discuss what changes they've been able to implement as a result. Do you know what it is that your customers think about energy consumption, smart home technology, or your service? In this episode, Patty Durand, CEO of the Smart Energy Consumer Collaborative answers questions about modern energy consumers following research launched late last year. The SECC works to learn the wants and needs of energy consumers in North America, encourages the collaborative sharing of best practices in consumer engagement among industry stakeholders, and educates the public about the benefits of smart energy and energy technology. Durand speaks to us about consumer engagement in general and specifically during this time of COVID-19.
Patty Durand, CEO of the Smart Energy Consumer Collaborative in a return visit to the program, this time spoke about her organization’s in-depth research on “beneficial electrification” – a phrase meant to encompass the massive shift in society toward electricity as the main energy for industry, homes, and transportation, and making sure the electricity used is generated with the least carbon emissions possible, preferably no carbon at all. This carbon-free energy goal is being set by nations, states, industry leaders among major corporations, and the SECC looked at multiple reports and interviewed a dozen industry experts to see where this process is, where its going and how the consumer fits into this electric industry mass evolution.
We Speak Dispatch remembers Mike Becker from the Scott Emergency Communications Center (SECC) in Davenport, Iowa. Mike was the training coordinator for the SECC and hosted several training classes from the We Speak Dispatch panelists. Mike was an amazing person and his laugh and willingness to always help others will truly be missed. We Speak Dispatch is thinking of everyone at the SECC during this tough time.

Hazret-i Zeynelâbidin on iki imamın dördüncüsu olup Beşinci imam ise Zeydiyye’nin kurucusu sayılan oğlu Muhammed Bâkır Zeyd bunlar arasındadır . On this episode I have Pat Thetic from the band Anti-Flag, and you might wonder why Anti-Flag are important to me.Regular listeners probably know that my journey into the world of punk rock began with The Offspring. They were the portal into a world which I've spent the last 18 years in, staying curious and walking between the different lands that each specific genre of punk rock music occupy. But that punk rock journey did not start off political. The first record I bought, Americana by The Offspring, is half party record, half teen angst. It was very much of its time and as a 12 year old boy I played the CD until it warped. I think I spent a good three years with that as my sole musical focus.I still have that very same CD and at some point along the way, I picked up the sheet music to it as well. In 2001, after Conspiracy of One was released, my first ever show was The Offspring in the SECC, supported by Caffeine and AFI.Fast forward a year and at some stage a friend of mine let me hear ‘Die for Your Government' by Anti-Flag, and I subsequently downloaded a bunch of their stuff. I was no stranger to political music – I was and still am a huge Rage Against the Machine fan – but it never moved me to action. Rage's political fury was righteous but it never rang true for me.During the download binge, I came across Anti-Flag's ‘9/11 for Peace' and it changed the game. For the first time I saw the power of politics in music; I realised that a song can be a powerful vessel for a political message, it can be a call to action. It can mean something more than a song, than a piece of music. It can represent the fullness of an idea. The power of those messages, combined with the essays that Anti-Flag fill their album sleeves with, was an inspiration to me.My own songwriting process has been inherently political ever since. I have Anti-Flag to thank for that.My chat with Pat (ohh, it rhymes) is very laid back, open and honest. He's a great guy who is as politically engaged as you might expect. Highlights include: Finding punk rock communities in every country they go to Pat's enjoyment of the punk community and how the DIY ethic brings people together The DIY ethic of A-F Records and how that keeps them connected to the punk community The difficulty of staying touch with the punk community when you tour so much But also being addicted to touring despite how unhealthy it is for life Making the transition from normal life to tour life and the fiction that causes The meaning of American Spring and the purpose of the album's message The Ukraine situation and giving power to the people When things go to violence, no one ever wins The population always has to go with a nonviolent way of revolution The great reception of American Spring and how playing songs live almost has no value because of the way the fans interpret Anti-Flag's music is always a dialogue When Pat realised that being in a band is something he needed to do We talk about the independence referendum Art getting work done is more important or valuable than music that makes you just feel good without a message The problem with punk being overwhelmingly white and maleI was really happy that I had a chance to speak with someone from a band who had such an important influence on me. Over the years, Anti-Flag have fallen away from view. My listening habits went in a slightly different direction. However after hearing American Spring and speaking to Pat, I'm sure I won't let that happen again.I hope you enjoy the episode. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022.
