Over the past week, the 90-day freeze of US foreign assistance has sent a shockwave through the humanitarian and development communities. If you ask this weeks guests on Trumanitarian the crisis will not be over in three months - Harpinder Collacott, Michael Barnett, and Meg Sattler come to the conclusion that the consequences of the aid freeze will last for years. The real question is: as the old system fractures, what new models of humanitarian action will emerge?Meanwhile, communities are not idly waiting for external interventions. Can aid evolve to truly support them in building stronger institutions that can withstand the shocks to come?No grand narratives. No easy solutions. Listen in for a clear-eyed, smart and honest perspective on the disruption of the humanitarian sector.
In the universe of strange adoption stories, none has reached the dizzying heights of absurdity like The Curious Case of Natalia Grace. This is the kind of story that makes you wonder if reality got drunk and lost its way. Now, with the latest season, The Final Chapter, airing on Investigation Discovery, the tale somehow gets even more convoluted, as if that were possible. Let's dive into the delicious chaos of this case, shall we? A Midnight Escape Fit for a Thriller Natalia Grace, the Ukrainian adoptee at the center of this ongoing carnival, kicks off the season with her midnight escape from the Mans family. You'd think she was fleeing a high-security prison, not a suburban home. Her co-conspirator? None other than Neil, her mysterious online boyfriend. Neil has been elevated to folk-hero status in the saga—the digital knight who swooped in to help Natalia execute her daring getaway. The Mans family, predictably, reacted like characters in a soap opera, complete with finger-pointing, dramatic monologues, and allegations that Natalia was an adult sociopath in disguise. Yes, according to the Manses, she's not just a woman pretending to be a child—she's the next Bond villain. They also had the gall to claim that Neil was some kind of evil mastermind manipulating poor Natalia from his keyboard. If this sounds like an over-the-top plot twist, buckle up; it's only the beginning. The escape itself played out like a scene from a spy movie—text messages sent in code, a carefully timed exit, and a rendezvous point with the DePaul family, Natalia's new saviors. The show takes viewers step by step through the escape, complete with re-enactments that are either dramatic or unintentionally hilarious, depending on your tolerance for melodrama. For Natalia, this was the turning point, a chance to leave behind a life of surveillance, restrictions, and relentless accusations. The DePauls Ride to the Rescue Natalia's new safe haven? The DePaul family, who had previously tried—and failed—to adopt her. They wasted no time swooping in to offer Natalia a life that, thankfully, didn't resemble an Orwellian nightmare. Unlike her previous living situation, Natalia's life with the DePauls appears refreshingly—dare we say it—normal. She's pursuing her GED, working through past traumas in therapy, and dreaming of becoming a teacher. Oh, and she's apparently a die-hard Taylor Swift fan, using 1989 as her emotional life raft. Who knew you could shake off a scandal this big with a little Swifty magic? The DePauls' home is a stark contrast to the Mans family's fortress of paranoia. Here, Natalia is allowed to simply exist without being treated like a criminal mastermind. The show gives us glimpses of her day-to-day life, from studying for her GED to bonding with her new family over dinner. It's almost mundane—which, in the context of this story, feels downright revolutionary. The Age-Old Debate: Child or Adult? Ah, the age controversy. It's the hill that both the Barnett and Mans families seem willing to die on. Is Natalia a child or a 30-something grifter with a PhD in deception? Despite endless medical tests, court hearings, and expert opinions, no one seems capable of giving a definitive answer. You'd think with all the CSI-level tech we have, someone could figure this out, but nope—the mystery remains unsolved, and we're left watching grown adults argue over X-rays and bone density scans like they're auditioning for a medical drama. The series does a commendable job of presenting both sides of the debate without leaning too heavily in either direction. On one hand, you have medical professionals swearing Natalia's growth plates indicate she's a child. On the other, there's testimony about her supposedly adult behaviors, like understanding complex financial transactions and—wait for it—having a vocabulary too advanced for her alleged age. Because, apparently, big words are incriminating now. The Final Chapter: Promises, Promises This season comes with big promises: unseen footage, bombshell interviews, and a so-called revelation that will “change everything.” Sure, we've heard that one before, but who's not curious to see what fresh madness awaits? The producers have teased a climactic episode that's apparently going to “rewrite the narrative” of Natalia's life. Whether this means uncovering new truths or simply stirring up more questions is anyone's guess. The show's pacing is masterful, slowly peeling back layers of the story while keeping viewers on the edge of their seats. Each episode ends with a tantalizing cliffhanger, ensuring that even the most casual viewers are compelled to come back for more. The blend of interviews, archival footage, and re-enactments creates a rich tapestry that's equal parts compelling and bewildering. A Quick Refresher for the Uninitiated For those tuning in late, here's a quick-and-dirty recap of how we got here. Natalia Grace was adopted by Michael and Kristine Barnett, who thought they were bringing a six-year-old Ukrainian girl into their home. Spoiler alert: things went downhill faster than you can say “adoption paperwork.” The Barnetts claimed Natalia displayed behaviors far too mature for a child—including an apparent obsession with harming others. They went so far as to have her age legally changed to 22, then abandoned her in an apartment while they skipped off to Canada. Classy, right? Enter the Mans family, Natalia's next unfortunate stop on the foster-care carousel. If the Barnetts were chaotic, the Manses were downright dystopian, keeping Natalia under a level of surveillance usually reserved for high-value prisoners. Their accusations of her being an adult con artist only added fuel to an already raging fire. Throughout all of this, Natalia has maintained her innocence, claiming she's simply a misunderstood kid caught in a nightmare. Whether she's telling the truth or has a future in the theater is one of the many lingering questions this new season aims to answer. Adding More Layers to the Chaos The deeper the series dives into Natalia's life, the murkier the waters become. We learn about the Barnetts' questionable parenting tactics, which range from bizarre to borderline abusive. Kristine Barnett's assertion that Natalia was a “plant” sent to disrupt their family sounds more like a rejected spy thriller plot than a credible claim. Meanwhile, Michael Barnett's tearful interviews add another layer of complexity, painting him as either a deeply remorseful father or an actor worthy of awards season. The Mans family, for their part, is no less perplexing. Their insistence that Natalia was a threat to their safety reaches absurd heights, with one particularly memorable scene featuring them detailing how they “barricaded” themselves in their bedrooms at night. The visual of grown adults cowering behind locked doors while a tiny Natalia roamed the house is both darkly comedic and deeply unsettling. And then there's Neil, the digital Romeo who swept into Natalia's life like a deus ex machina. His role in the escape and his unwavering support for Natalia raise eyebrows and questions in equal measure. Who is this guy? A hero? A misguided romantic? Or just someone who's read one too many conspiracy theories? The show promises to unpack Neil's motivations, but for now, he remains an enigma wrapped in a Wi-Fi signal. Final Thoughts: Where Do We Go From Here? If The Final Chapter lives up to its hype, we might finally get some closure on this rollercoaster of a case. But let's be honest—this is the kind of story where answers often lead to more questions. One thing is certain: Natalia Grace's tale is a masterclass in how reality can out-weird fiction. So grab your popcorn, folks. This ride isn't over yet. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In this episode, Finnemore reflects on the journey and impact of constructivism, tracing its rise from a niche critique to a central framework in global governance. We explore the intellectual and real-world challenges of persuading a discipline once dominated by materialist paradigms to take seriously the power of ideas. With enviable clarity, she explains how constructivism reveals the social underpinnings of power, from norms shaping cybersecurity to the shared authority in the governance of AI. Martha Finnemore is University Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at George Washington University. A leading scholar in global governance, international organizations, and social theory, her award-winning books include Rules for the World and The Purpose of Intervention. The Humanitarian Club - members only!Is the humanitarian sector run by an elite network that controls the vast majority of resources and power within the sector, a closed circle that excludes outsiders? This week Trumanitarian welcomes Michael N. Barnett, Professor of international affairs and a leading scholar on humanitarianism. In one of his pieces ‘The Humanitarian Club' (we love it), Barnett uses sociological and economic theory to describe humanitarianism as a club where the few hold the economic, symbolic, social, and cultural capital. It leaves outsiders in the cold and permits members to control pooled funds, influence, and decision-making.If you're ready to confront the harsh realities of the humanitarian sector, tune in and let Michael Barnett guide you through the systemic barriers that define the sector. It's time to ask ourselves who really benefits, and who's left outside the gates of the Humanitarian Club.Don't forget to explore Michael's chapter in the 2021 book “Global Governance in a World of Change” here - chapter 5.

Natalia Grace born with a rare form of dwarfism was adopted from a Ukrainian orphanage at the age of 4 but when that adoptive placement did not work out, Natalia was dropped off at a private adoption agency in Florida where she was then adopted by the Barnett family. The main story begins at 15:39 for those who want to skip the opening banter Natalia Grace Barnett is a Ukrainian-born American with dwarfism, who, in 2010, was adopted by an American family but abandoned by them two years later. Barnett's adoptive parents claimed that Barnett was a legal adult, and, in 2012, they successfully sought a court order legally changing her birth year from 2003 to 1989. MAX now features two seasons of the ID channel's series on Natalia's case featuring interviews with Natalia, her adoptive father Michael Barnett, her new adoptive parents, "legal experts", and various characters who encountered Natalia during this turmoil. Almost everyone involved is pretty awful and Michael easily takes the top prize for most unhinged human being to ever appear on television. Cash and Joel review both seasons of the docuseries and raise questions over the validity of its content. Both hosts had different perspectives while watching as Joel went into it not knowing anything about it while Cash had some forewarning about how the two seasons play out, so it's interesting to see how their opinions differ and align. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/middleagedandmediocre/message

Can a documentary ever truly capture the multifaceted truth of a complex human story? This question lies at the heart of the intriguing and convoluted case of Natalia Grace, explored in the podcast "Hidden Killers" with host Tony Brueski and guest psychotherapist and author Shavaun Scott. The discussion delves deep into the layers of perception, manipulation, and medical mysteries surrounding Natalia's story, as presented in the documentary series. Tony Brueski sets the stage for a critical examination of the documentary's narrative: “Any of these documentaries, they do have an idea where they want the film to go. What's going to make it most compelling.” This observation invites viewers to question the storytelling motives and methods in such complex cases. The central controversy revolves around Natalia's age, a subject of heated debate and conflicting medical opinions. Shavaun Scott highlights the perplexity surrounding this issue, noting the stark differences in medical evaluations. “One saying, no, we think, yeah, she is 15 years older than she says she is. Others coming out saying, look, I mean, look at these dental records. I mean, this, I mean, you can't argue with physiology.” This inconsistency in medical opinions underscores the challenge of discerning the truth in a case shrouded in mystery. Further complicating the narrative are the roles of Kristine and Michael Barnett, Natalia's adoptive parents. The podcast raises questions about the credibility and motivations of the medical professionals involved in the case. Scott points out the ethical dilemmas faced by doctors when personal relationships potentially influence professional opinions. “Is that common in the medical system where you get letters written by doctors because they have good relationships with some patients?” she asks, highlighting the potential for bias in medical evaluations. Michael Barnett's portrayal in the documentary is particularly scrutinized. Brueski describes his evolution throughout the series: “In the beginning, he described, 'Oh, when this all started, I had this ideal marriage and this ideal life.' And now he's claiming, 'No, I was an abuse victim the whole time.'” Scott adds to this analysis by diagnosing Michael with a histrionic personality disorder, noting his manipulative tendencies and dramatic behavior. The ethical implications of the Barnetts' actions, particularly their treatment of Natalia, are a focal point of the discussion. Scott is critical of Michael's attempt to equate his experiences with those of Natalia, emphasizing the clear victimization of the young girl. “Natalia clearly was a victim and there's no debate that these people put her in an apartment by herself at approximately eight years of age,” she asserts, calling into question the moral compass of the Barnetts. The conversation also touches upon the impact of such a case on the individuals involved, particularly the children of Kristine and Michael Barnett. Scott expresses concern over the potential harm caused by the public airing of family grievances and the manipulation of narratives for self-serving purposes. In conclusion, the "Hidden Killers" podcast with Tony Brueski and Shavaun Scott offers a compelling examination of the Natalia Grace case, probing the layers of truth, manipulation, and ethical dilemmas. It invites listeners to ponder the complexities of human nature and the challenges of discerning reality in a world where narratives can be skillfully constructed and manipulated. But one question remains: In a case as complex as Natalia Grace's, can we ever truly separate fact from fiction, or are we forever destined to grapple with the elusive nature of truth? From the very start of her life, Natalia Grace has been passed around like a human football and exploited. From the moment of her birth in Ukraine when doctors encouraged her mother Anna Volodymyrivna Gava to give her baby up due to her diagnosis of dwarfism, Natalia has been denied a stable, loving home and instead been placed with people who had no business caring for her and had no capacity for loving her. Today we examine Natalia's complex and convoluted case, made only more confusing by the docu-series “The Curious Case of Natalia Grace”. We examine the many narrators in this story including Michael Barnett who along with his wife Kristine adopted Natalia, appeared to abuse her both physically and mentally, coercively controlled her and then bizarrely sought to prove Natalia was not a child, but an adult woman pretending to be a child, legally "re-aging" her. Jim and Laura analyze the evidence and try to discern who is telling the truth and what actually happened. Can there be any excuse for traumatizing and abandoning a dependent person with a severe disability (be they a child or an adult) to fend for themselves with no means of care? This week we hear from Babz and Michael Barnett, a husband and wife franchisor team at the head of the table at Romp & Roll. Romp n' Roll is a young childhood enrichment exercise, education, STEAM and STEM concept, with an AMAZING story and it's co-founders are here to tell it. . It's not every day that a US emerging franchisor in the early stages of growth and development domestically, winds up selling a complete country out to a Master, who actually collaboratively with the franchisor, awards hundreds of units in their country, especially, when the country is China, before the US franchisor, even hits a dozen units sold domestically. It's one of those stories that you just can't make up, but it's true and you are going to hear all right now, from Babz and Michael Barnett.

The day before Hamas's horrific attacks in Israel, the Arab Barometer, one of the leading polling operations in the Arab world, was finishing up a survey of public opinion in Gaza. The result is a remarkable snapshot of how Gazans felt about Hamas and hoped the conflict with Israel would end. And what Gazans were thinking on Oct. 6 matters, now that they're all living with the brutal consequences of what Hamas did on Oct. 7.So I invited on the show Amaney Jamal, the dean of the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs, and a co-founder and co-principal investigator of Arab Barometer, so she could walk me through the results. And, it's a complicated picture. The people of Gaza, like any other population, have diverse beliefs. But one thing is clear: Hamas was not very popular. As Jamal and her co-author write: “The Hamas-led government may be uninterested in peace, but it is empirically wrong for Israeli political leaders to accuse all Gazans of the same.”Mentioned:Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research Public Opinion PollWashington Institute PollBook Recommendations:The One State Reality edited by Michael Barnett, Nathan J. If a two-state solution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is dead, does this mean Israel exists as a "one-state reality?" Do Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank live in conditions tantamount to apartheid? In an essay in Foreign Affairs, four scholars of the Middle East argue that analysts and policymakers should drop the illusion a two-state solution is possible as long as Israel's military occupation of the West Bank and blockade of Gaza continue. In this episode, one of the scholars, George Washington University political scientist Michael Barnett, defends their position against criticism that they're ignoring Palestinian responsibility for the absence of peace.
Kate discusses FX's "The Secrets of Hillsong”, a four-part documentary series based on the explosive original reporting on the megachurch's scandals by Vanity Fair journalists Alex French and Dan Adler. The series features the first interviews with former pastors Carl and Laura Lentz since their public ouster from the church, which for years counted musicians, actors, athletes and other celebrities among its flock. Many of the congregants navigating the global reckoning also offer their perspectives as the church faces a rash of fresh revelations. Shannon Evangelista, producer of The Curious Case of Natalia Grace on ID Discovery, which offers extraordinary access and exclusive insight into a mystery ripped straight from the headlines: Who is Natalia Barnett? Initially assumed to be a 6-year-old Ukrainian orphan with spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, a rare bone growth disorder that can result in skeletal abnormalities as well as issues with hearing and vision, Natalia was adopted by Kristine and Michael Barnett in 2010. However, the happy family dynamic soured when allegations against Natalia were brought by the Barnetts who alleged Natalia was an adult masquerading as a child with intent to harm their family. In 2013, Natalia was discovered living on her own which ignited an investigation that led to Michael and Kristine's arrest and a firestorm of questions.
