Meet the moms who raised the most successful CEOs ,athletes & entertainers.
What led me to this interview: Kyler Murray was the first person in history to be drafted in the first rounds of both the MLB and NFL drafts. He is the starting QB for the Arizona cardinals. He won the Heisman in college along with an endless list of other athletic awards. My husband was the area scout with the A's and so I had the opportunity to meet Kyler and his family in Oakland right after he was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in 2018. I spent a couple of days with Kyler, his parents, and his older sister and brother. I walked away from that weekend, thinking about what an incredible family the Murrays are. I amazed at how their entire family handled the intense pressure of signing a professional baseball contract, the press, and all the attention. Kyler, at the time, was a college student and while he had been in the spotlight for years, there is a different level of intensity when you leave your home town, sign a pro contract, sit at press conferences, go through physicals, review contracts, all while every single person around you is watching you so closely. People are watching Kyler's siblings and parents as well. What everyone saw was a cohesive family who was all there to help and support one another. They were gracious, grateful, professional, happy, genuine and I had an absolute blast with them! Our time together was something I thought back to often. How does a mom raise three children who become adults that are so connected, supportive of one another? I knew Missy Murray was a legendary Momma with lessons to share! So when I started to make my dream list of mommas I wanted to speak with for the podcast, Missy was at the top of my list! Missy shared the following great insights while we chatted on Who Is Your Momma! The love that Missy has for her three kids oozes out of her every minute! She is the heart of her family and she has a close relationship with each of her children. There is so much love in the Murray family. Missy said that the best part of her day was when she picked her kids up from school everyday. I found this to be sweet and as a mom with little kids, I know just how she felt! Missy described her kids as the highlights of her life, which is a perfect way for this sports momma to describe her children. Sports brought this family together and so much of their lives involved sports. Hours spent at practices, games and training, but their family remained the most important thing for all of them. Day in and day out, Missy, the matriarch, the heart of the family, made sure that her kids needs were met. She encourages parents to always be sure that their kids are emotionally and mentally okay. The close relationship Missy has with her kids today reflect how she was always tuned into her kids. Missy's final piece of advice was to be spiritual and to make spirituality an important part of your life. Missy is filled with love and gives so much unconditional love to her family! https://whoisyourmomma.com/insight-from-missy-murray/
My dear friend, Jessica Spencer-Gardner has not been in my life for very long, but she has made a big impact on me. Our daughters were in preschool together and we come to find out she played basketball at ORU which I grew up nearby in Tulsa, OK and I also played basketball. In the same conversation, I discover she is from Kansa City and that is where my mom was born and raised. Then finally, I learn that she teaches classes at the Y where we go regularly, and let's just say, if you see Jess then you would believe in whatever work out classes she is a part of because she is so wonderfully fit. I start taking her classes and was instantly in awe of her. I have taught classes, I have taken a ton of classes and no one even gets close to Jess. How was she so different? Why was she so good? Why did I love this class that absolutely kills me week after week? Well, my curious self couldn't hold back so over the course of about 6 months I ask her all these questions and many more. Jess was so much better than anyone else I had ever seen because she worked harder than anyone I had ever seen. She preps, studies, practices, and has a passion for impacting people's lives through her work. She is a Les Mills instructor which she is so proud of and she continues to climb the ranks and add certifications. So after months of becoming friends with Jess, learning from her, hearing more about her family and her siblings, I realized her mom is exactly the type of mom I want to interview for this podcast. I am looking for exceptional people…that is Jess, who love their momma…that is Jess, and who are willing to share their journey…that is Jess & her incredible mom, Julie Boan! Insights from Julie Boan A mother to five exceptional children, Julie shared so many insightful tidbits that any parent could immediately put into action today. Julie is crazy for her kids and her positive, humble demeanor gave us a glimpse into how she ran her household and possibly why she has raised children who are all thriving in adulthood and still very close to one another. Julie, who is now a family counselor, discussed how there was no yelling in her home and that she & her husband Matt leaned towards love & logic as a parenting style. It was evident that Julie enjoyed her children when they were young and still to this day she is her kids' biggest fan. She wanted her children to remain friends for life and she made that idea central to her family life which paid off greatly as their family remains close today even though they are in different phases of life and not all in the same city. Julie wished she would have had more one on one time with her children and has a genius suggestion for parents to make that happen for themselves. She suggests giving each child 30 minutes once a week to pick any activity that he/she will get to do one on one with mom or dad. This approach allows the one on one time manageable for the parent to follow through with and still gives that special one on one time with the child. Since my conversation with Julie, I have actually put this into play at our house and it is WONDERFUL! I highly recommend it and appreciate Julie's tip! She also shared the fact that for every one negative comment coming from a parent to their child there needs to be five positive comments to balance the negative talk. That changes the way one would think about negative messages being sent to their child. Julie's parenting motto of “It's never too late” inspires us parents to do our best with the next moments. It doesn't matter how old your child is, it's always the right time to do your best as their parent. Julie is an all-star momma which a big, happy family that brings light to all those around them!

What led me to this interview: Drock is a well-known video creator who produces content for Gary Vaynerchuck and travels the world creating spectacular videos and images. I have been a fan of Drock (better known to his mom as David) since discovering Garyvee in May of 2018. Drock shares positivity, inspiration, and is a trailblazer in the world of video creation. On occasion, Drock shares personal things and it was obvious that he has a close relationship with his family. His sister, Sarah Rock, is also a positive voice for people online I began to follow her and her journey as well. For me, this further piqued my interest in their family and specifically their mom! Seeing the drive and passion of these two siblings made me curious and so I reached out to Drock and Sarah (again via IG DM) and that gave me the green light to speak to their incredible momma! I'm pleased to introduce Deborah Rock! Insights from Deborah Rock Deborah Rock has had a unique path that will relate to so many people! She is the mother of four children. She raised her first two children as a single, young mother and there were 13 years between her first two children and third and fourth children. Her growth and change over those years resulted in one woman who raised her family with two very different approaches. When she was a young single mother, Deborah, wanted her kids to be her best friends, gave them a great deal of freedom and she says she didn't think much about discipline and just loved her kids. They enjoyed life, were very laid back as a family, and life was good. So 13 years after having her first, Deborah has her third child and then has one more not too long after. She was married and was raising four children between 0 – 15 years. During the years of raising her four children, she has a turning point which really redirected her path and therefore her family's path. Deborah began homeschooling her three youngest children. Deborah adored her children and loved all the time she had with her kids. They went on adventures, volunteered, experimented with a variety of interests, and from the way Deborah described it, they really lived life to the fullest on their own terms. Still all along Deborah was leading with love. At this point, Deborah knew that discipline was important. She studied the best ways to discipline children and had her kids sign a contract to encourage them to adhere to a certain set of guidelines for their family. Deborah, the young single mom had evolved into a more structured and still devoted mom. What I found most interesting was the Deborah really had what seems like two different approaches to parenthood even within her own family, yet there were core pieces that never wavered…she wanted to raise kids with good character and she loved her kids deeply and unconditionally. Deborah spoke often about how building character and talking about character with her kids was a driving force. Not only talking about it, but she put that into action as she took her kids to go volunteer with the elderly, they participated in war re-enactments nearby, she encouraged her children to start businesses and to basically, always try things that interested them. While Deborah was with her kids so often she says if she could go back that she would hug and snuggle more with her kids…no matter what age! Deborah…I'm on this piece of advice for sure! Her advice to parents was Love! Love! Love! That advice is obviously something that Deborah lived every day! She also, reminded parents that ‘this too shall pass' and to not be too hard on yourself as a parent. Whew! Honestly, sometimes hearing that just takes some pressure off. Deborah gave so much insight into how she raised exceptional children who today are thriving, content, happy, and bringing joy to the world! She lived life in her own way and in a way that was best for her family. That was a special lesson to learn and something I have taken with me after our conversation.

Today, you are in for a treat on the Who is Your Momma Podcast, because we are doing a whole new thing today. We are welcoming our very first Dad. Bert Carson has spend the past 20 years raising a daughter, Alyssa Carson, who has the goal of being the first person to travel to Mars. Ellen Blakely raised two amazing children, one of whom is Sara Blakely is the inventor of Spanx, once noted as the youngest female billionaire. Ellen's perspective on raising children is fascinating. It is clear that she set her children up for the success they both have today. Insights from this #legendarymomma Ellen raised her children in a household that encouraged creativity and freedom to figure things out on their own. This approach meant that when Sara & Ford would say they were bored, Ellen said, “You have toys, you have friends, go play!” Both of Ellen's children enjoyed working from a young age and that interest in working was embraced at home. Whether it was an art business, lemonade stand, or putt-putt golf course, Ellen encouraged her children's interest. In many ways, Sara was destined to be the mogul that she is today. The way she was raised paired perfectly with her natural abilities and it is this precise combination that fostered Sara's talents. *Ellen's advice to mommas: Let your children find their passion, go with your gut, and don't beat yourself up.
