This is the last part of a four-part series with my lifelong friend Jimmy Childre, Jr. Jimmy's dad also joins us. Jimmy, who is on the Board of Councilors of the Carter Center, talks about Jimmy Carter, whose funeral was being held while we recorded this conversation. We end this series with some more profound questions for Jimmy.
i continue the conversation with my lifelong friend, Jimmy Childre, Jr. In this episode, we will discuss our teachers during our formative years and their impact on our lives. We will also move into our high school years and confess to some shenanigans never made public before - and a high school speech class that changed our lives.
My guest is Jimmy Childre, Jr. In Part two of our conversation, we tell stories of growing up in Reynolds, GA, and Little League Baseball. We will discuss some of the merchants in town and some of the history we lived through in the '60s, including the Cuban Missile Crisis and the assassinations of three national leaders. We will also discuss our introduction to the Beatles and Garage Bands and give our perspectives on segregation in the South.
This is Part One of my conversation with my friend of 70 years, Jimmy Childre, Jr. You will hear some of what Jimmy has accomplished in life, but more than that; you will hear to the importance of his rearing in a small Georgia community. I begin this conversation by talking to his soon to be 90-year old mother.

In this week's episode, we're breaking down the meaning of friendship. It might seem like a light and fluffy subject on the surface, but as with all of our topics, this subject manages to go much deeper than you might expect. We are social creatures. No matter how independent you think you might be, connectivity with others -- especially having quality friends -- is wildly important. Friendship is more than a quick fix for your desire to socialize. It's a necessary experience that's embedded within us as humans. The wrong friends can literally have a harmful impact on your DNA. But what about the right friends? What even is a good friend? How many friends can you feasibly have? How do you choose who's in you inner circle and who isn't? Quality friendships have impacts on our social, emotional and even physical health. In fact, your ability to survive a heart attack depends more on the quality of your friendships than smoking 20 cigarettes a day. Friendship is a special kind of connection that deserves your time and energy, but many of us simply don't know how to create or nurture those connections -- or how to break up with the friends who no longer fit in our lives. The David Alliance TDAgiantslayer@Gmail.com MingleMateMarry.com podcast youtube and website for the perfect marriage material and swag. They got a great hoodie called its a great day to be married… after today maybe some of you will want to wear purchase it… because many of you are not loving the days you are married… There was a series of commercials years ago… and the jingle was “what would you do for a Klondike bar”. But todays question is a little deeper… what would you do for a drink of water… Ok, I can admit that I like Klondike bars… I have eaten 5 at once… Hey I was in my 20's and had been waterskiing all day long and they went down easy… and not an ounce of fat was left on me! But what would I do for water? Well If I am truly thirsty… I would imagine I would do a few things that I might not normally do… if I am dying of thirst, then I would probably do just about anything… But what if the circumstances were… I am thirsty… not dying of thirst… but I could go for a drink of water, but not just any water the water from my homeland spring… It would kind of be like saying “In not starting but boy could I go for some of my mom's pasta right about now”. Now When David says this in 2 Samual 23… he has his men over hear him… and this is what happens. 2 Samuel 23:15 And David said with longing, “Oh, that someone would give me a drink of the water from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!” 16 So the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines, drew water from the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate, and took it and brought it to David. Nevertheless he would not drink it, but poured it out to the Lord. And you think you got friends… sure maybe, but not break through the philistines lines, in hand to hand combat, kill people and risk your life for water type of friends. And yet how many of us want exactly those type of friends… but today more than wanting that type of friend - why not WANT TO BE KNOWN as that type of friend. I do have a few friends like that… but more than anything want to be known as that type of friend. yeah, I get it… I can't be that way to everyone, and there are some who would abuse that type of friendship… but I want to know my friends wants and needs - and again not from them asking me for stuff, but just knowing what they are going through - so that I can help meet those needs even when it might cost me my life. But there is still a greater message here. Water is the symbol of life, water is who Jesus is… he is the river of life, John 14: 6 he is the living water… and he was willing to lay down his life for us to receive it. Are you willing to lay down your life for others to have living water? Even though they may not receive it… are you willing? Are you doing? Are you pursuing? Is it costing you? I admire people who will take one on the chin for sharing jesus, I admire people who are willing to sacrifice and give in the name of the gospel, I admire people who are not ashamed to be verbally crucified in the media for sharing their faith and speaking the truth. So the question is… if that is the case… do i admire you?

My dear friend, Jessica Spencer-Gardner has not been in my life for very long, but she has made a big impact on me. Our daughters were in preschool together and we come to find out she played basketball at ORU which I grew up nearby in Tulsa, OK and I also played basketball. In the same conversation, I discover she is from Kansa City and that is where my mom was born and raised. Then finally, I learn that she teaches classes at the Y where we go regularly, and let's just say, if you see Jess then you would believe in whatever work out classes she is a part of because she is so wonderfully fit. I start taking her classes and was instantly in awe of her. I have taught classes, I have taken a ton of classes and no one even gets close to Jess. How was she so different? Why was she so good? Why did I love this class that absolutely kills me week after week? Well, my curious self couldn't hold back so over the course of about 6 months I ask her all these questions and many more. Jess was so much better than anyone else I had ever seen because she worked harder than anyone I had ever seen. She preps, studies, practices, and has a passion for impacting people's lives through her work. She is a Les Mills instructor which she is so proud of and she continues to climb the ranks and add certifications. So after months of becoming friends with Jess, learning from her, hearing more about her family and her siblings, I realized her mom is exactly the type of mom I want to interview for this podcast. I am looking for exceptional people…that is Jess, who love their momma…that is Jess, and who are willing to share their journey…that is Jess & her incredible mom, Julie Boan! Insights from Julie Boan A mother to five exceptional children, Julie shared so many insightful tidbits that any parent could immediately put into action today. Julie is crazy for her kids and her positive, humble demeanor gave us a glimpse into how she ran her household and possibly why she has raised children who are all thriving in adulthood and still very close to one another. Julie, who is now a family counselor, discussed how there was no yelling in her home and that she & her husband Matt leaned towards love & logic as a parenting style. It was evident that Julie enjoyed her children when they were young and still to this day she is her kids' biggest fan. She wanted her children to remain friends for life and she made that idea central to her family life which paid off greatly as their family remains close today even though they are in different phases of life and not all in the same city. Julie wished she would have had more one on one time with her children and has a genius suggestion for parents to make that happen for themselves. She suggests giving each child 30 minutes once a week to pick any activity that he/she will get to do one on one with mom or dad. This approach allows the one on one time manageable for the parent to follow through with and still gives that special one on one time with the child. Since my conversation with Julie, I have actually put this into play at our house and it is WONDERFUL! I highly recommend it and appreciate Julie's tip! She also shared the fact that for every one negative comment coming from a parent to their child there needs to be five positive comments to balance the negative talk. That changes the way one would think about negative messages being sent to their child. Julie's parenting motto of “It's never too late” inspires us parents to do our best with the next moments. It doesn't matter how old your child is, it's always the right time to do your best as their parent. Julie is an all-star momma which a big, happy family that brings light to all those around them!
William Cowper (1731–1800), the English poet, found a friend in his pastor, John Newton (1725–1807), the former slave trader. Cowper suffered from depression and anxiety, attempting to die by suicide more than once. When Newton visited him, they’d go on long walks together and talk about God. Thinking that Cowper would benefit from engaging creatively and having a reason to write his poetry, the minister had the idea to compile a hymnal. Cowper contributed many songs, including “God Moves in a Mysterious Way.” When Newton moved to another church, he and Cowper remained strong friends and corresponded regularly for the rest of Cowper’s life. I see parallels between the strong friendship of Cowper and Newton with that of David and Jonathan in the Old Testament. After David defeated Goliath, “Jonathan became one in spirit with David,” loving him as himself (1 Samuel 18:1). Although Jonathan was the son of King Saul, he defended David against the king’s jealousy and anger, asking his father why David should be put to death. In response, “Saul hurled his spear at him to kill him” (1 Samuel 20:33). Jonathan dodged the weapon and was grieved at this shameful treatment of his friend (v. 34). For both sets of friends, their bond was life-giving as they spurred on each other to serve and love God. How might you similarly encourage a friend today?

Hi Friends! There are some bad friends out there, but no friends are as bad as Preston and Liam. I can't believe what they did to their “lifetime best friend” Sarah for just $10,000. Love you so much and please be safe out there! Hope to be seeing you very soon x o Bailey Sarian Watch the original video here and don't forget to subscribe to my YouTube @BaileySarian! Join us for a special crossover episode with Friends for Life! Host Stephanie Neugebauer talked with us about the importance of intergenerational relationships, particularly with older generations honoring and serving the younger generation. As we think about the life of the church, how we care for pre-teens, teens, and young adults is a part of how we engage and value God's people in every aspect of life. About Friends for Life: We believe that God is the author and sustainer of all life. We also know it can be hard to speak about the intrinsic value of that life when it feels like the world is trying to drown us out. We're right here beside you. In this podcast of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod's Life Ministry, we're coming alongside one another as a community of Christ's redeemed people, ones who are speaking up for and living out the sanctity of human life. Together we'll explore life issues in a way that honors our heavenly Father's value of human life, serves our neighbor, and connects us to others who are doing the same. Join us, so that together we can be friends for life. Learn about LCMS Life Ministry at lcms.org/life, and email us at friendsforlife@lcms.org.
