Hey humans! Welcome back to part two of our data literacy series! In this episode, I continue my round table discussion with Jennifer Wright, Karen Brieger, and Kelly Oliver as we dive deeper into the practical aspects of HR data. We explore the critical importance of "clean data" - what it really means and why it matters so much. Kelly breaks down the three-phase framework of data engineering, data analysis, and data insights, explaining why you can't just jump straight to insights without proper preparation. Jennifer shares a powerful example about how software conversion challenges can create data issues, while Karen emphasizes the importance of basic data accuracy - from employee addresses to departmental coding. Our conversation also addresses the unique challenges faced by fractional HR leaders who need to quickly adapt to different organizational cultures and data preferences. As Karen explains, some clients want workshops and training while others just want quick data points without the deeper understanding. We discuss how to navigate these different environments while still delivering value. We also touch on the future of HR data and analytics with cautious optimism about AI's potential to help identify anomalies and patterns. There are still so many organizations still mastering the basics of data literacy. Enjoy part two of our data conversation! Stacie More episodes at StacieBaird.com. Hey humans! On this part one of a two part series, I had the pleasure of hosting a fantastic round table discussion with three amazing HR professionals - Jennifer Wright, Karen Brieger, and Kelly Oliver - where we dive into the world of data literacy in human resources. Each of my guests shared their unique HR journeys and how embracing data has been a game-changer in their careers.  We had a really honest conversation about how data literacy helps transform HR from being seen as just the "squishy people stuff" department to becoming a strategic business partner that directly impacts organizational success. You'll love hearing their personal stories - from Karen's boardroom moment that became her wake-up call, to Jennifer's transition from retail buying to HR leadership, and Kelly's perspective coming from sales operations into the people space, we explored how HR data directly connects to business outcomes when we know how to collect it, make sense of it, and present it effectively. We all shared some great real-world examples, and also talked about the importance of spreading data literacy beyond our HR teams to middle managers throughout our organizations, and the tech tools (like HR Bench) that have helped us all move from manual spreadsheets to more sophisticated analytics. Enjoy this part one and stay tuned next Tuesday for the follow up! Enjoy, Stacie More episodes at StacieBaird.com. LinkedIn Pages for each of my guests: Jennifer Wright Karen Brieger Kelly Oliver

In this episode, we speak with University of Cincinnati professor of social work Jennifer Wright-Berryman, a seasoned mental health and suicide prevention researcher with a long-standing commitment to improving understanding of the death-care experience for members of the LGBTQIA+ community. During her extensive research, she discovered a scarcity of resources and support specifically directed towards LGBTQIA+ individuals. Her efforts include analyzing the websites of funeral homes to identify those that had explicit signaling that they welcomed LGBTQIA+ individuals. Based on that work, Wright Berryman and her colleagues are developing a website that evaluates funeral homes and lists those that are LGBTQIA+ friendly. Their work aims to ensure everyone has access to dignified and inclusive death care services without fear of discrimination. In this episode, we discuss the recently launched website, EqualDeathCare.org, and the scope of this project, which includes a directory of verified LGBTQIA+ friendly funeral homes. https://www.equaldeathcare.org Selected quotes from the episode Educating Funeral Homes: They say, ‘I never thought that I would need to put something on my funeral home website that signaled, whether it be a little pride flag or a graphic of a same-sex couple holding hands.' They've never really given much thought to the fact that not signaling could mean that someone may not walk in your front door because they fear discrimination. Rising Mortician Classes: This new cohort of mortuary science students that are coming up are going to be savvy with technology. They're going to be savvy with their values envisioned around who their customers can be and who their customers are. Inclusive Partnerships: If you're not listed (on the directory), that means that either A. we haven't found you yet (and please reach out to us because we would be happy to have a discussion about putting you on the website), or B. your website isn't clear enough. Two years ago, a Portland Jewish family’s home was destroyed in an arson. As they got rid of all their burned belongings, the one thing they couldn’t bear to do was toss out with the rest of the burned remains a 100 year-old Steinway grand piano that had belonged to “Grandma Bess.” Much of it was intact, though not restorable. They reached out to musicians and artists and ultimately found their way to Jennifer Wright. She’s a classical pianist by training, a composer and a sound artist who works with found instruments and other objects.   The family, who wants to keep their identity private, worked with Wright over the next two  years on turning the grand piano into a mixed media exhibit, including a newly formed glass piano and textile art made with the burned strings. In a statement that is included in the exhibit, the family wrote: “Seeing the piano transformed from a burned and destroyed object into the foundations of new instruments, furniture, art, beauty, and community awareness is a balm for the wounds of waste and loss. … Finding connectedness is an antidote to hate.” We visit the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education to talk with Jennifer Wright and OJMCHE director Rebekha Sobel.

She was known as the “wickedest woman in New York” during her lifetime. A physician adored by her patients but despised by the moralizing populace sweeping mid-19th century America. She defied all social conventions of her era, she rose from an immigrant widowed single mother living on the lower east side to a self-made millionaire outbidding the Catholic Diocese of New York for an empty lot on fifth avenue. She not only provided abortions and birth control to women throughout the country but blatantly advertised her services in New York newspapers. She would have been celebrated for her American spirit if she had been a man. Unapologetically ambitious, a ruthless and savvy business owner, and a resilient survivor. But Madame Restell was not a man, and in addition, she provided services such as abortion and birth control that still divide American society to this day. Instead of going down in the annals of American history alongside men like John D Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and JP Morgan, the name Madame Restell has become synonymous with villainy, greed, murder, and corruption. Featured Guests: Critically acclaimed novelist Kate Manning who is the author of My Notorious Life, a fictional interpretation of Madame Restell's life and world, and Jennifer Wright, an author and journalist who recently published the highly successful book Madame Restell: The Life, Death, and Resurrection of Old New York's Most Fabulous, Fearless, and Infamous Abortionist. Content warning: This episode contains occasional explicit sexual references and depictions of graphic events that some may find disturbing. Madame Restell is a figure you've likely never heard of. Our guest this week points out that Restell, an abortionist who became one of the most influential and wealthiest women in NYC during the 19th century, has been “deliberately written out of history.” But learning about Restell's story provides incredible insight into the longstanding and contemporary battles over abortion access in the U.S. Jennifer Wright is a journalist and author of “Madame Restell: The Life, Death, and Resurrection of Old New York's Most Fabulous, Fearless, and Infamous Abortionist.” Wright joins WITHpod to discuss Restell's rise to prominence, the opposition Restell faced from anti-vice crusaders like Anthony Comstock, why she says the U.S. is “heading back not only 50 years, but 150 years” and more.

In 19th Century New York, everyone knew who to go to to end an unwanted pregnancy: the French-trained, sophisticated Madame Restell, who lived in a posh mansion on 5th Avenue. In reality, Madame Restell was English immigrant Ann Trow Lohman, and she had never even been to France, but she managed to combine medical skill with her carefully crafted public persona to become tremendously wealthy, while providing a much-needed service. As the legal landscape of the United States grew ever more conservative, Madame Restell did her best to evade the authorities, and then Anthony Comstock knocked on her door. Joining me this week to help us understand more about Madame Restell is historian and writer Jennifer Wright, author of Madame Restell: The Life, Death, and Resurrection of Old New York's Most Fabulous, Fearless, and Infamous Abortionist. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. Sam Jahara is a UKCP Registered Psychotherapist and Tavistock certified Executive Coach with a private practice in Brighton, South-East England. She became a psychotherapist as a result of coming to terms with several aspects of her upbringing, mainly linked with cultural identity as well as being raised by parents who were involved in a cult. Sam grew up primarily in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil but moved around a lot because of her parent's involvement with their guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (later renamed Osho). From age 6 she lived in communes dotted across Europe, including the UK, and life was chaotic and unsettling. After leaving the cult in her late 20s, she spent many years trying to make sense of her profound experiences of lack of belonging and a sense of identity, stemming from being both an immigrant and an ex-cult member. As with many cults, children are usually seen as objects, a hindrance, or treated as little adults. Abuse and neglect are common through the encouragement of separation of parents and children. Now in her late 40s, she is still making sense of some of these experiences and using her training and knowledge to continue to understand cults, cult leaders, and what makes people follow them. In this insightful conversation, the two therapists examine the impact that neglectful parents can have on the development of children through the lens of Sam's own perspective of being raised in an Osho commune as a young child. Together, Rachel and Sam go on to discuss the cultural identity issues that are often present in people who were raised in cults and how it relates also to those who had unstable living conditions as children. Sam offers a thoughtful analysis of her parents' motives in joining Osho's cultic community and opens up about the emotional complexities inherent in her relationships with her family today. Before You Go: Rachel further examines her concept of a spiritual placebo, explaining it can decieve followers into sacrificing the power of their own autonomy and makes them vulnerable to dependence on a guru figure.
