Candace Nelson is a living breathing example of how to turn your passion into profit. After quitting her career in investment banking, she had plans to go to business school, but changed them last minute to instead do what she called a Pastry MBA, and to hone her baking craft. She started Sprinkles Cupcakes from her small flat in 2005, nearly 20 years later, Candace has sold over 200m cupcakes from her bakeries and cupcake ATMs across the country. The story of how she achieved this growth is wild, and includes cameos from Tom Cruise and Oprah From featuring on the US version of Dragon's Den, Shark Tank, to being a judge on Netflix's cupcake wars, Candace has created a baking empire, and I can't wait for you to hear all about it.+CANDACE'S LINKS:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/candacenelson/?hl=enHer book, Sweet Success: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1400231507/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1685421586&sr=8-2-sponsPizzana: https://pizzana.com/+MY LINKS: https://gracebeverley.komi.io/+SHREDDY, TALA and THE PRODUCTIVITY METHOD are my own brands, therefore any mention of them - whilst not being a sponsorship - is monetarily endorsed. Daniele Uditi is the chef and partner behind Pizzana, one of Los Angeles' best and most influential pizzerias. Daniele joins us for a wide-ranging conversation that covers everything from his upbringing living above his aunt's bakery near Naples, Italy, to his spontaneous relocation to Los Angeles which ultimately led him to meeting Candace Nelson and launching a bona fide pizza empire. We talk about the nitty gritty of dough and sourcing excellent products, but Daniele also offers us a window into the evolution of Los Angeles' pizza scene over the last decade, what it means to lead a business with integrity in this day and age, and what he thinks of all of those pizza lists you see doing the rounds on social media. We learn about what his favorite pizzas in Los Angeles are besides his own of course, and we also hear about how he ideated the Padrino, LA's best Italian sandwich, which is now permanently available for lunch at Pizzana's Marina del Rey location. “If I'm developing a recipe for a client, or for my own books, I'm all about people telling me what they think about it, what it invokes for them, what they would do differently,” notes New York Times best-selling cookbook author Adeena Sussman about the collaborative nature of preparing recipes for readers. If there's anybody who knows what it means work in partnership in the kitchen, it's Adeena Sussman—the co-author of 15 books, including the best-selling Cravings series written in collaboration with model and television personality Chrissy Teigen. Adeena is also the co-author of The Sprinkles Baking Book, written with Candace Nelson, the noted pastry chef and founder of Sprinkles cupcakes. Adeena's latest solo book, Shabbat: Recipes and Rituals from My Table to Yours, celebrating (and reimagining!) the traditional foods that have long graced her family's Shabbat table, became an immediate best-seller upon publication in September 2023. The book is a follow-up to Adeena's 2019 cookbook Sababa, named one of the best cookbooks of the year by The New York Times, Bon Appetit, and Food & Wine. A lifelong visitor to Israel who has been writing about that country's food culture for almost twenty years, Adeena lives, cooks, and writes in Tel Aviv, in the shadow of that city's famed Carmel Market. Today, a year later, I'm about to retire from the practice of law and embark on a new adventure! My fav, Marshalls, is sponsoring today's episode reminding us where we can get the good stuff for less (advertisement by Marshalls). On this week's episode of Networth and Chill, I'm sitting down with the queen of cupcakes and founder of Sprinkles, Candace Nelson. Opening your own business can feel like a huge risk, especially when you are throwing a complete career change into the mix. But when Candace lost her job as an investment banker, she did just that, and opened one of the most recognizable cupcake businesses in the country. I ask Candace what it was like to pivot her professional career into something completely new, what drew her to baking, and what some of the biggest challenges she faced were when starting out. There is so much that goes into opening your own business, and I ask Candace what advice she has for those looking to head down that path. Got a financial question you want answered on a future episode? Text me or leave me a voicemail at 908-858-3410. Special thanks again to Marshalls for sponsoring this episode!

I have a hard time saying no. I am often asked to attend events, contribute to community efforts, or simply give money, and the first word out of my mouth is always, Yes! But this time, it was almost more of a benefit to me than the actual organization asking for help. I had the amazing opportunity to interview Candace Nelson at the 2023 Greater Reading Chamber Alliance Dinner because she requested it be in that type of format. She had no interest in just showing up and speaking, so that opened the door for me to be that guy. Putting myself in an uncomfortable position put the fear of god in me. I was terrified. I stood up in front of over 800 people and had to be me. Freddy Vasquez. The guy with the white beard isn't afraid of anything. Well, this evening, that was being put to the test. Candace Nelson, a serial entrepreneur, founder of Sprinkles Cupcakes, and author of Sweet Success, got laid off during the dot-com bubble, leading her to reevaluate her career path. Growing up baking, Candace decided to fill her unemployed free time by attending pastry school. This experience unlocked her passion, making her realize that she needed to pursue a career that brought fulfillment and joy. She took a considerable risk and poured her life savings into creating the world's first cupcake bakery. As the original trailblazer transforming the cupcake from a commodity to a luxury experience, Candace was a pioneer. She also came up with the idea of the cupcake ATM, which allows customers to purchase cupcakes 24/7, a solution to her problem of not being able to get her hands on a cupcake late at night while having a pregnancy craving. But as you'll learn from this episode and her new book, you can't just rely on your one big idea. Innovation doesn't sleep, and competitors are just one step behind you. Candace has now expanded into pizza with a brand called Pizzana. Her book, Sweet Success, is a comprehensive guide to entrepreneurship, not a sugarcoated version--she shares the mishaps, mistakes, and hard-earned lessons she learned. In this episode, Candace speaks about the importance of perseverance and resilience and reminds listeners and aspiring entrepreneurs that before a 'yes,' there will be many more 'no's.' She also shares her approach to decision-making, which includes using her gut, heart, and mind, and emphasizes the importance of being intentional in everything. As we face an economic downturn, many people worldwide are forced to reevaluate their careers and what direction they want to go in life. Candace's story and Sweet Success are the perfect inspiration and toolkit for anyone who wants to build a brand.
Candace Nelson is a serial entrepreneur, NYT and WSJ bestselling author, WSJ contributor, angel investor, TV personality, executive producer, and mom. She started her career working in investment banking and the internet start-up scene before completely shifting gears to follow her passion and attend pastry school. In 2012 Sprinkles introduced its Cupcake ATM, a cutting-edge contactless cupcake delivery system. Later that year they sold Sprinkles to PE firm KarpReilly. Today, Sprinkles has sold over 200 million cupcakes, has over 20 stores, 30 Cupcake ATMs, and 1000 employees. In 2017, Candace co-founded Pizzana, a fast-growing chain of award-winning Neo-Neapolitan pizzerias, leading the “third wave” of pizza in the US. Pizzana cemented Los Angeles as a pizza destination and revolutionized pizza takeout with its innovative heat and slice at-home method. Pizzana also ships its frozen pizza nationwide. In 2021 she co-created and executive produced Best in Dough, a Hulu show starring Pizzana Executive Chef Daniele Uditi, which began streaming in the Fall of 2022. Today, through her company, CN2 Ventures, a family office, and venture studio, she has backed a diverse portfolio of startups in the specialty food, retail, health, wellness, and early childhood spaces with a focus on female and underrepresented founders. When Candace Nelson and her husband Charles co-founded the Sprinkles cupcake company, their friends and family thought it was a terrible idea. “We were essentially two out-of-work investment bankers looking to bet it all on cupcakes at the height of a low-carb craze,” Candace said to host Kerry Diamond. Not only did Sprinkles become a huge hit, but the couple sold a portion of the business and went on to launch Pizzana, another company built around a much-loved food. Candace, who today is a much sought-after dessert and start-up expert, has compiled the two subjects into a business book titled Sweet Success: A Simple Recipe To Turn Your Passion Into Profit.Candace joins us to share the challenges faced in getting Sprinkles up and running, the lessons she learned along the way, and some of the wisdom found in Sweet Success.Thank you to Käserei Champignon, the maker of Cambozola cheese for supporting this episode.
