9News obtained footage of US marshals boarding a crowded RTD bus on Colfax to capture an escapee from Aurora's ICE detention facility. So on this week's Friday news round-up, our politics and green chile correspondent Justine Sandoval joins us to talk about the latest local developments in the federal immigration crackdown — from the ACLU's legal challenge to deportations to the precarity of transportation funding. Then a listener asks: Do you have to be “quirky” to become governor of Colorado? Plus, Juneteenth's funding cuts, a major abortion clinic closes, and more wins and fails of the week. Bree mentioned the Westword story “Satan Sheets,” an immersive Titanic exhibit, the Fat & Fresh market happening this weekend, the Throughline episode on the Alien Enemies Act, Dr. Warren Hern's retirement, and the documentary “After Tiller.” Paul referenced this NYT article about John Hickenlooper's 2020 presidential campaign, the Juneteenth Music Festival's funding trouble, and Rep. Emily Sirota's work to pass CO's new “junk fees” law. Justine talked about the National Womens Soccer League stadium's funding getting one step closer to a full City Council vote. In Part 4 of the July – September 2024 installment of UNFOLDING THE CALENDAR, Film Forum Director Sonya Chung sat down at the theater with Lana Wilson, the brilliant director of the new documentary LOOK INTO MY EYES, a revelatory portrait of psychics in New York City and the people who come to them seeking connection – on this plane or another one. The film opens Friday, September 6 from A24. Lana has a long history with Film Forum. After working in our administrative office for several years early in her career, her bold, moving debut feature AFTER TILLER, about four of the US's most courageous and controversial abortion providers, opened with us in 2013. Since then, she has established herself as one of the most exciting and empathetic documentarians working today with the Spirit Award-nominated feature THE DEPARTURE, the IDA-nominated short-form series A CURE FOR FEAR, and two intimate profiles of iconic women: the Taylor Swift portrait MISS AMERICANA and the multiple Emmy-nominated PRETTY BABY: BROOKE SHIELDS. We are thrilled to welcome Lana back to Film Forum. Please enjoy their conversation.
Rappler's Maria Ressa talks to filmmaker Lana Wilson (Miss Americana, The Departure, After Tiller) about exploring a shared humanity with her documentary subjects, and how she came to tell the stories that she did. Catch more #HoldTheLine episodes on Rappler.
Dispatches from the 10th DOC NYC includes returning friend of the podcast filmmaker Martha Shane ("After Tiller") with her new film "Narrowsburg" and first time guest, the Belgian filmmaker Kristof Bilsen with his moving new documentary "Mother". Visit DOCNYC.net for tickets and details.
THE DEPARTURE, Lana Wilson’s (After Tiller) poetic and deeply moving look at a former punk-turned-Buddhist priest in Japan who has made a career out of helping suicidal people find reasons to live. One of the discoveries of the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival and featured at some of the world’s top documentary festivals, THE DEPARTURE follows a 44-year-old Tokyo native, Ittetsu Nemoto loves riding his motorcycle and dancing all night in clubs. But he’s also a Rinzai Zen priest, who lives with his wife, mother and baby son at a temple in the remote countryside of Gifu prefecture, Japan. There, over the last ten years, he has become famous for his work in combating suicide. But this work has come increasingly at the cost of his own family and health, as he refuses to draw lines between the people he counsels and himself. With astonishing access and artistry, Wilson’s camera captures Nemoto at a crossroads, when his growing self-destructive tendencies lead him to confront the same question his patients ask him: what makes life worth living? Director Lana Wilson (After Tiller) joins us for a conversation about death, love, priorities and family. For news and updates go to: thedeparturefilm.com

Call in and you stay on the line. You too can Join our Round Table Discussion. Bards Logic discusses Public broadcasting Service (PBS) airing of "After Tiller", a documentary on doctors whom perform later term abortion. Letter from Bill Marshall: "This week I was made aware of PBS's plans to air a program glorifying late term abortion and the doctors that perform them entitled "After Tiller". The program seems to paint a picture of how heroic these doctors are because of the moral dilemma they personally encounter in these cases. If these doctors were truly faithful to the oath they take then there would be no dilemma. To take the life of an innocent unborn child is wrong according to God and what He has revealed to us. It is not up to them or anyone else to decide such a thing. If these doctors, like Dr. Tiller, and the federal government would listen to the wisdom of God, they would have no moral dilemmas. This program will air locally on September 6. In order to facilitate contacting our local affiliate to express our outrage, I am forwarding the following contact information: Please call them at: 216-916-6100 and navigate to Programming or email the Program Director: peg.neeson@ideastream.org. This week on the show: Adam and Ernie talk about some of what they've been watching including Don Jon, After Tiller, Curse of Chucky, and Escape from Tomorrow We get into a feature review of Ron Howard's Rush and finally we go over this week's movie predictions, new on VOD, and DVD and Blu Ray releases
In this week's Movie Date podcast, Rafer and Kristen talk crime and fast cars. They also speak with Martha Shane and Lana Wilson, the filmmakers behind a documentary about the last four late-term abortion clinics in the country. Start your engines! It's time to review "Prisoners," "Rush," and "After Tiller."
In this episode, Matthew Groves interviews debut documentary directors, Martha Shane and Lana Wilson, about their film, After Tiller. The film follows the lives and work of four doctors who perform third trimester abortions in the wake of the murder of Dr. George Tiller. Rather than look at the political and philosophical debates, the film looks at the issue of abortion from humanistic level, showing how it works, the people behind and their reasons and motivations. No matter one's personal views, After Tiller is a direct, tender look that is bound to educate, complicate, and challenge the viewer to grapple with the complex humanistic layers to the issue. The film is out now and is a must see! Feel free to comment on here and give us a star rating and review on iTunes! Notes: Still provided by Yes and No Productions Please forgive some of the knocking sounds in the audio in places throughout the interview.
