In our second episode of the season, we discuss Neil's superb, recently published book Music Films: Documentaries, Concert Films and Other Cinematic Representations of Popular Music. We explore their significance, evolution, and the complexities surrounding their creation and reception, along with Neil's reflections on the challenges of writing for diverse audiences and the expectations of music fans. The conversation touches on the validity of music films in modern culture, the messiness of the genre, and the importance of representation, particularly regarding black artists and women in music. They also examine the ethical implications of music documentaries and the power dynamics at play in the portrayal of artists. Neil's book is so comprehensive we couldn't cover everything but some of the films under discussion include Don't Look Back (dir. D. A. Pennebaker, 1967), Lonely Boy (dir. Roman Kroitor and Wolf Koenig, 1962), Whatstaxx (dir. Mel Stuart), The Punk Singer (dir. Kathleen Hanna), In Bed with Madonna (dir. Alek Keshishian, 1991), The Last Angel of History (dir. In Part 4 of the July – September 2024 installment of UNFOLDING THE CALENDAR, Film Forum Director Sonya Chung sat down at the theater with Lana Wilson, the brilliant director of the new documentary LOOK INTO MY EYES, a revelatory portrait of psychics in New York City and the people who come to them seeking connection – on this plane or another one. The film opens Friday, September 6 from A24. Lana has a long history with Film Forum. After working in our administrative office for several years early in her career, her bold, moving debut feature AFTER TILLER, about four of the US's most courageous and controversial abortion providers, opened with us in 2013. Since then, she has established herself as one of the most exciting and empathetic documentarians working today with the Spirit Award-nominated feature THE DEPARTURE, the IDA-nominated short-form series A CURE FOR FEAR, and two intimate profiles of iconic women: the Taylor Swift portrait MISS AMERICANA and the multiple Emmy-nominated PRETTY BABY: BROOKE SHIELDS. We are thrilled to welcome Lana back to Film Forum. Please enjoy their conversation.

Lana Wilson joins Anthony to discuss her documentary 'Pretty Baby' and her process in working with Taylor Swift for her documentary 'Miss Americana'. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Director Lana Wilson says that in “Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields” she's showing how Shields found her way from “object of beauty to becoming a human being.” It's a dramatic thesis, but one that Wilson brings to life in this Emmy-nominated documentary series. After the original “Pretty Baby”, “The Blue Lagoon”, and the Jordache Jeans commercials, Brooke found herself in her 4 years of college–where she developed both intellectually and artistically– and ultimately became the comic actor we see in “Suddenly Susan”. While the series is grounded in the deep archive of film from Booke's career, some of the most telling footage is shot at her contemporary dinner table, surrounded by her two teenage daughters and her loving husband as they respectfully but seriously consider the meaning and undercurrents of her youthful work. “Pretty Baby” is available on Hulu. Welcome to Day Seven of our Sundance/Slamdance Film Festival coverage! Per the usual with Honorary Bitch John Wildman of Films Gone Wild, we're highlighting three Sundance documentary films that focus on strong women who changed the game.In Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields, we get an inside look on how her rise to fame at a young age caused her to be sexualized as a child, and the repercussions (both good and bad) that this had on her career on her personal life. We sat down with returning guest, director Lana Wilson (who we interviewed in 2020 for her Taylor Swift documentary, Miss Americana), to discuss what it was like to tell the story of an American icon, and how the most important part of her film is about the relationship between a mother and her daughter. The Disappearance of Shere Hite tells the story of a woman who should be widely known and talked about, but sadly, as the title suggests, her life story has disappeared from our country just as she did. Shere Hite was the author of The Hite Report, published in 1976, and was a nationwide study on female sexuality based on thousands of questionnaires that she received from women across the country. The book is a blueprint of what women really think about sex, and the importance of clitoral stimulation. Director and returning guest Nicole Newnham (who we interviewed in 2020 for her film Crip Camp), shares our frustration in the men who were threatened by Shere's work, and explains why it was important to share both the strength it took for Shere to do this revolutionary work, and her weaknesses that caused her to eventually leave the country.Going To Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project highlights the life and legacy of legendary poet Nikki Giovanni. Directors Michele Stephenson and Joe Brewster sit down with us to talk about Nikki's unique outlook on life, how this film deals with tough topics at times and will also have you laughing out loud, and why it is so frightening to interview her. Congratulations to Michele and Joe for winning the Sundance U.S. Non-Fiction jury award for capturing Nikki's past, present, and future. Cody never got around to wrangling a new special guest for this week's podcast, so in lieu of that, he recruited Scrawls stalwarts Ben Noble, Joseph Shin, and podcast editor Reagan Jones for a discussion of their favorite films of 2020 so far. The boys touch on everything from Spike Lee's widely acclaimed Da Five Bloods to Lana Wilson's divisive Taylor Swift documentary Miss Americana, even making a little time for some discourse regarding Eurovision Song Contest and The King of Staten Island. Things then take a sharp left turn into an extensive analysis and debate over Melvin Van Peebles' iconic blaxploitation (or is it??!) classic Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song.

Hi everyone! Welcome back for another week of reviews! This week, we’ll be closing out February with a fun mix of reviews. Tomorrow, Andrew Campbell will takeover Matinee Monday with his review of the recently renamed 20th Century Studios distribution, THE CALL OF THE WILD. On Tuesday, we’ll finally get the elusive Kolby Told Me on the podcast, with his take on THE PHOTOGRAPH as part of Takeover Tuesday. On Wednesday, Shane Hyde returns with his review of 2009’s THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL, recently made available on streaming services. Thursday will see yet another review from Jon-David, aka the Mafia Hairdresser, reviewing the sleeper hit PAIN AND GLORY. On Friday, Andrew is reviewing another animal-focused thriller entitled JALLIKATTU, which will have plenty of BS. And I’ll be closing out the week with a review of MARIANNE & LEONARD: WORDS OF LOVE as part of our Under the Kanopy series. But today, we’re super excited to be welcoming back One Movie Spouse to the podcast, with today’s review of one of her favorite musical artists. It’s probably better that she reviews MISS AMERICANA as I don’t have very informed opinions on Taylor Swift. And before anyone asks, I did not make her do this review, so please shake it off. I’m sure there are tons more puns I could do, but I’m going to stop right there. Here we go! ///// > ///// Hello, It’s me Amy, AKA One Movie Spouse, back for another music documentary review. MWAH! I love, love, loved today’s film! Listen to my review, then catch me on Twitter @OneMovieSpouse to keep the conversation going. Here we go! Today’s movie is MISS AMERICANA (2020), a fabulous documentary directed by Lana Wilson. MISS AMERICANA follows Taylor Swift’s early musical career, her rise to fame, and an inside look as to how she discovers the power of her voice. No spoilers! I was excited to watch MISS AMERICANA. I have been a passive fan of Taylor Swift since the release of her album “1989”, which was released during my first year of teaching. It was my “go-to” album during those late nights and weekend hours I spent in the classroom prepping for the week ahead. At that time, I was a bit embarrassed to admit I was a fan, but that may have been due more to the teasing from our 10-year-old daughter, “You like Taylor Swift? But you’re a MOM!” This makes me laugh out loud now, but I’ll admit I was a “secret fan” for a few years. I share this anecdote because I didn’t know much about Taylor Swift’s early years. I knew that she started performing as a young country music star, but not to the full extent showcased in this documentary. I enjoyed this retrospective look at her career and the shifts in her musical style and performances. It also makes me eager to go back and check out some of her earlier work. One of things that I LOVE about music documentaries, this one especially, is watching the behind-the-scenes studio footage as songs come alive. Watching Taylor Swift dabble with melodies, word play, and collaboration with other artists and production engineers is truly magical! After watching this film, I dare you *not* to sing and dance along with “Me!” This documentary is also a snapshot of the making of her 2019 album, “Lover”, so a handful of the songs are getting a lot of air-time on the radio, making it interesting and timely for viewers. I downloaded this new album immediately after watching the film. Lana Wilson did an excellent job sharing the chronology of Taylor Swift’s career, as well as the social media issues that surfaced during her rise. One of the most memorable was during the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards when Swift was awarded Best Music Video for “You Belong to Me”, and Kanye West stormed the stage announcing that Beyoncé had the best video. Footage shows her completely shocked at this disruption and then shows segments of her response to being completely bulldozed by another celebrity. She was truly a display of “grace under fire” and this message carried throughout as the film also showcases some other social media issues. Without spoiling anything for viewers, I appreciated her candid responses and “real talk” about issues she and other women face. MISS AMERICANA humanizes this superstar and made me love her even more as a human being! This documentary does an excellent job showing Taylor Swift’s growth from young woman to a superstar performer. Along with this growth is her desire to use her voice as an influencer regarding social, political, and environmental issues. I found this part of the documentary to be especially touching, filled with several “Hell Yeah!” moments, cheering on her willingness to speak up even as others were trying to silence her. Taylor Swift, now 30, isn’t afraid to speak up and she won’t be silenced. It really is a beautiful thing to witness, and I cannot wait to see what’s next for her. As the documentary ended I jotted down a sentiment she shared: “Sharp pen. Thin skin. Open heart.” This really stuck with me! I finished this documentary with a greater appreciation for her music and life than I ever imagined. Also, I’m no longer embarrassed to admit I *am* a Taylor Swift fan! MISS AMERICANA is a fabulous documentary showcasing Taylor Swift’s early musical career, and her life as she emerges into the superstar performer that she is today, all while working on her most recent album, “Lover”. Fans of Taylor Swift, musical documentaries, and social media influencers will really enjoy this film! Rotten Tomatoes: 93% (CERTIFIED FRESH) Metacritic: 65 One Movie Punch: 10/10 MISS AMERICANA (2020) is rated TV-MA and is currently playing on Netflix.
Taylor Swift abriu o coração no documentário recém-lançado, Miss Americana.

We sit down with filmmaker Lana Wilson to talk about her award-winning (and beautiful) documentary THE DEPARTURE, which follows a Buddhist priest in Japan and his remarkable suicide-prevention program.
In this podcast, IDP Board Chair Tarikh Korula talks to Lana Wilson about her new film, The Departure: Ittetsu Nemoto, a former punk-turned-Buddhist-priest in Japan, has made a career out of helping suicidal people find reasons to live. But this work has come...
THE DEPARTURE, Lana Wilson’s (After Tiller) poetic and deeply moving look at a former punk-turned-Buddhist priest in Japan who has made a career out of helping suicidal people find reasons to live. One of the discoveries of the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival and featured at some of the world’s top documentary festivals, THE DEPARTURE follows a 44-year-old Tokyo native, Ittetsu Nemoto loves riding his motorcycle and dancing all night in clubs. But he’s also a Rinzai Zen priest, who lives with his wife, mother and baby son at a temple in the remote countryside of Gifu prefecture, Japan. There, over the last ten years, he has become famous for his work in combating suicide. But this work has come increasingly at the cost of his own family and health, as he refuses to draw lines between the people he counsels and himself. With astonishing access and artistry, Wilson’s camera captures Nemoto at a crossroads, when his growing self-destructive tendencies lead him to confront the same question his patients ask him: what makes life worth living? Director Lana Wilson (After Tiller) joins us for a conversation about death, love, priorities and family. For news and updates go to: thedeparturefilm.com

In this week's Movie Date podcast, Rafer and Kristen talk crime and fast cars. They also speak with Martha Shane and Lana Wilson, the filmmakers behind a documentary about the last four late-term abortion clinics in the country. Start your engines! It's time to review "Prisoners," "Rush," and "After Tiller."
In this episode, Matthew Groves interviews debut documentary directors, Martha Shane and Lana Wilson, about their film, After Tiller. The film follows the lives and work of four doctors who perform third trimester abortions in the wake of the murder of Dr. George Tiller. Rather than look at the political and philosophical debates, the film looks at the issue of abortion from humanistic level, showing how it works, the people behind and their reasons and motivations. No matter one's personal views, After Tiller is a direct, tender look that is bound to educate, complicate, and challenge the viewer to grapple with the complex humanistic layers to the issue. The film is out now and is a must see! Feel free to comment on here and give us a star rating and review on iTunes! Notes: Still provided by Yes and No Productions Please forgive some of the knocking sounds in the audio in places throughout the interview.
A unique live cinematic and musical event, Tales from the Gimli Hospital: Reframed pairs acclaimed filmmaker Guy Maddin’s classic first feature film with a live performance—directed by Maddin himself—of a new score created by composer Matthew Patton, a superstar group of Icelandic musicians, acclaimed Seattle-based musical collective Aono Jikken Ensemble, and live electronics engineer Paul Corley. A cult sensation when it was released theatrically in 1988, the original Tales from the Gimli Hospital tells the dreamlike, elliptical story of the jealousy and madness instilled in two men sharing a hospital room in a remote Canadian village. The film first propelled Maddin to international prominence, becoming a success on the midnight movie circuit, and is now being completely transformed by this brand new performance. With dramatic new narration written by Maddin and performed in a mixture of singing and speaking by the bewitching Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir (formerly of múm, and also known as Kria Brekkan), a hauntingly gorgeous string and vocals score performed by acclaimed Icelandic musicians Gyda Valtýsdóttir (cello), Borgar Magnason (double bass), and Maria Huld Markan Sigfúsdóttir (violin), and ingenious live “Foley” sound effects plus additional musical atmosphere created by the Aono Jikken Ensemble (Willliam Satake Blauvelt, Dean Moore, and Naho Shioya), the new score takes the original Gimli in an entirely new direction, with layers upon layers of music drawn from different sources reflecting the story-within-a-story structure of the film, and an ethereal tone that draws out the darkest and most haunting elements of the film, bringing Maddin’s original artwork to life in a sublime and unexpected new way. Lead curator: Lana Wilson.
