On this award winning podcast we talk about the parts of life stretching us to our limits, the necessary growth and the marks left behind. Stretch marks don't just happen on your body - they happen throughout your life (especially in this insane world). TRIGGER WARNING - PREGNANCY TERMINATION This episode discusses the termination of a pregnancy due to fatal fetal abnormality. But if you can stay - please do, because every woman in Ireland needs to hear this story to understand why our abortion legislation is letting down women who need and deserve to be cared for - here - in this country. My guest this week is mother of two Shonagh O'Connor. She contacted me and she asked me would I consider covering the topic of termination specifically to highlight how for some women they fall outside of the legislation and don't receive care here. She explained her story and my response was to invite her to share it with you too - in her own words. At 12 weeks and 2 days, at a scan, she was told that her pregnancy was unlikely to continue to term. But as she was 12 and 2 days that there was nothing they could do for her in Ireland. She would have to travel to the UK for a termination. If she had been 11 week she could be treated here, despite the historic referendum, a landslide of 66.4% voting in favour to repeal the 8th amendment and provide abortion care for women in Ireland. This conversation acts as an example of how we are still exporting care of women in need of reproductive healthcare in this country. If you have been affected by the themes in this episode please find the following supports:Bereavement Support https://lmcsupport.ie/https://wellwomancentre.ie/unplanned-pregnancy/ema-step-by-step/https://www.ifpa.ie/advocacy/abortion-in-ireland-legal-timeline/https://www.abortionrightscampaign.ie/abortion-law-in-ireland/British Pregnancy Advisory ServiceYou can find me on instagram @sinead.omoore and @stretchmarkspodcastProduced by the brand storyFor brand collaborations and sponsorship please email stretchmarkspod@gmail.com Hosted on Acast. In Brazil in the 1990s, women discovered using misoprostol for safe, self-managed abortion. In 1980 in France, mifepristone was discovered and in 1988, approved. Approval in the U.S. occurred shortly thereafter, in 2000. Rebecca Kelliher, journalist and author of Just Pills: The Extraordinary Story of a Revolution in Abortion Care, sits down to talk with us about her new book exploring the history of misoprostol and mifepristone. The comprehensive approval, and global dispersion, of misoprostol and mifepristone took decades. Yet now, the most recent numbers show that 63% of U.S. abortions are medication abortions. These medications—specifically mifepristone—are under increasing attacks, with anti-abortion actors targeting telehealth prescription. In addition, lawsuits attempting to prevent the mailing of pills to states with abortion bans are becoming more frequent. While these attacks are devastating, we can look to Latin America for hope: in Argentina, underground feminist organizations formed to disperse misoprostol while the country faced a near-total abortion ban. For more information, check out Pantsuit Politics: https://www.pantsuitpoliticsshow.com/s/podcastSupport the showFollow Us on Social: Twitter: @rePROsFightBack Instagram: @reprosfbFacebook: rePROs Fight Back Bluesky: @reprosfightback.bsky.social Buy rePROs Merch: Bonfire store Email us: jennie@reprosfightback.comRate and Review on Apple PodcastThanks for listening & keep fighting back!

For 20 years, Dr. Shelley Sella saw patients whose diverse backgrounds and circumstances led them to the same difficult decision: to end their pregnancies. In her new book, Beyond Limits, Sella draws from her experiences to offer a window into a typical week at her clinic, weaving together patient stories—including those of a mother navigating a devastating prenatal diagnosis, a woman confronting unexpected test results after IVF, and a parent weighing safety and stability for her existing children. Dr. Sella offers a testament to a standard of care grounded in competence, compassion, and sensitivity, as well as a call for a paradigm shift that moves beyond Dobbs, beyond Roe, beyond limits to provide care. It is a tribute to the real people whose hearts, reasons, and stories are more complex than politicized conversations about abortion lead us to believe. Dr. Shelley Sella is a board-certified OB-GYN and the first woman to openly practice third-trimester abortion care in the US, which she did for 20 years. She was prominently featured in the Emmy Award–winning documentary After Tiller. Dr. Sella served two terms on the board of the National Abortion Federation and in 2022 was awarded its highest honor, the Christopher Tietze Humanitarian Award. She is retired from clinical practice and now focuses on advocacy. Amelia Bonow is the Cofounder and Executive Director of Shout Your Abortion, a nationwide organization working to normalize abortion and elevate safe paths to access, regardless of legality. Amelia is the coeditor of SYA's eponymously titled book, which sits in the recovery rooms of hundreds of abortion clinics, as well as Abortion is Everything, a new children's book about abortion. Amelia is honored to serve as the Co-chair of the Board of Directors of Abortion Care Network, the national organization that serves and represents independent abortion providers. The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 396: Yoga for Abortion Care with Sasha Sigel   Description: We live in a time when access to abortion care is increasingly under threat and attacks on reproductive health are intensifying. What does yoga have to do with abortion care and how can yoga teachers support people going through abortion care before, during, and after the process? Sasha Sigel shares her insights. Sasha Sigel is a pelvic floor yoga teacher, Reiki practitioner, and abortion doula. Sasha is also a cofounder of a queer yoga collective called Be Queer Now, which offers virtual and in-person programming for the queer community. In her work, Sasha focuses on folks in the LGBTQIA+ community seeking pelvic health support as well as offering trauma-informed, gender-affirming practices. When Roe v Wade was overturned in 2022, she trained to be an abortion doula where she supports folks going through abortion care with accurate information and practical, emotional, and physical support. In this episode, Sasha shares more how how yoga intersects with reproductive justice and how we can lean on the foundational values of yoga to guide us in supporting people through their reproductive choices. Sasha also explains how yoga is more than just movement – it is a liberatory practice that can offer space for validation, rest, and healing, especially for those who've experienced abortion or miscarriage. Tune in to learn more about the barriers many people face when accessing care, how community doulas and yoga teachers can safely show up, and why normalizing abortion as a part of human healthcare is a crucial part of our work as compassionate spaceholders.    Key Takeaways: [2:20] Shannon gives a shout out to sponsor, OfferingTree. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against a New York physician, Dr. Margaret Daley Carpenter, accusing her of illegally prescribing abortion pills to a Texas woman via telehealth in violation of Texas laws. Paxton claims the medication caused complications requiring hospitalization and is seeking at least $100,000 in civil penalties for each violation. The lawsuit is one of the first to challenge state shield laws to protect out-of-state doctors providing abortion care after Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022. New York Attorney General Letitia James condemned the move, vowing to defend reproductive rights and protect physicians providing legal care. The legal clash highlights the deepening divide over reproductive rights and the aggressive push by Texas to enforce its near-total abortion ban. Learn more about your ad choices. Dr. Warren Hern's book, Abortion in the Age of Unreason: A Doctor's Account of Caring for Women Before and After Roe v. Wade, chronicles the difficult realities of providing abortion care amidst a polarized political and social climate. Drawing from personal experiences, Hern describes protecting patients and staff from aggressive protesters and emphasizes the critical need for abortion services to protect women's health. His work also highlights insights from his research in Latin America, underscoring abortion's role in addressing national and global public health challenges. Hern argues that the recent dismantling of Roe v. Wade has intensified a long-standing crisis, which now endangers democracy as political groups exploit the issue to gain power. His book exposes the real risks of restricted access and urges for political action to safeguard reproductive rights, stressing that women's need for safe abortion services is an essential, ongoing component of healthcare and freedom. Warren M. Hern, M.D., is known to the public through his many appearances on CNN, Rachel Maddow/MSNBC, Sixty Minutes, and in the pages of The Atlantic magazine, The New York Times, Washington Post, and dozens more media. A scientist, Hern wrote about the need for safe abortion services before the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision and was present at the first Supreme Court arguments. In his research and medical work, he pioneered since 1973 the modern safe practice of early and late abortion in his highly influential books and scholarship. A tireless national activist for women's reproductive rights, he is an adjunct professor of anthropology at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and holds a clinical appointment in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Colorado medical center. He holds doctorates in medicine and epidemiology. His book is Abortion in the Age of Unreason: A Doctor's Account of Caring for Women Before and After Roe v. Wade. Shermer and Hern discuss Hern's journey into abortion care, abortion history pre- and post-Roe, and the complex procedures involved. They explore the risks of pregnancy versus abortion, societal and political challenges like protests and threats, and the debate over fetal personhood. Hern also delves into the broader implications of abortion rights on democracy and society, shedding light on contentious issues surrounding reproductive health.

The Midwest is a patchwork of different abortion laws—while some states like Michigan and Minnesota have protected access, others have completely banned care, like Indiana and Missouri. Garnet Henderson, Senior Multiplatform Reporter at Rewire News Group and host and producer of ACCESS: A Podcast About Abortion, sits down to talk with us about abortion access in the Midwest, including how it may be further impacted by recent funding changes to the National Abortion Federation and Planned Parenthood Federation of America.People residing in or near states that have banned abortion often travel to Illinois for care (although some may also travel to states like Nebraska, Minnesota, and Kansas), which was the state with the single largest increase in its abortion rate after Dobbs due to out-of-state travelers. These states are having to absorb skyrocketing rates of traveling patients on top of in-state patients seeking care. Iowa's abortion restrictions and abysmal access rates to OB/GYN care and maternity care has resulted in maternity care deserts across large swaths of the state, and a shocking 61% of hospitals in rural areas having no labor and delivery service. Simultaneously, the Justice Fund, a financial assistance fund for low-income patients which is shared between PPFA and NAF, has been reduced with less than a month's notice from 50% coverage per patient to 30%. This leaves patients with an even more shrunken lifeline to access.Support the Show.Follow Us on Social: Twitter: @rePROsFightBack Instagram: @reprosfbFacebook: rePROs Fight Back Email us: jennie@reprosfightback.comRate and Review on Apple PodcastThanks for listening & keep fighting back!

SCOTUS Chat: Recorded live with Jess Braverman, Gender Justice Legal Director and Erin Maye Quade, Gender Justice Special Projects Advisor On June 27, 2024, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its decision in Idaho v. United States and Moyle et al., or the “EMTALA” (Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act) case, which centers on whether state abortion bans supersede the federal EMTALA law mandating that hospital emergency departments receiving federal funding must stabilize a patient whose life or health is at risk.  In its long-awaited decision, the Court sent the case back to the lower courts, where. It also reinstated a lower court's ruling permitting doctors to provide emergency abortion care even where such care conflicts with Idaho's abortion ban—but not before several patients had to be airlifted out of Idaho to receive emergency health care because of the Court's initial decision. By punting on what should be a straightforward ruling, the Supreme Court effectively condones the denial of emergency abortion care.  In this SCOTUS Chat, Gender Justice Special Projects Advisor Erin Maye Quade and Legal Director Jess Braverman share their analysis of the Supreme Court ruling. Two years ago this week, the Supreme Court ruled that abortions are not constitutionally protected in the U.S., a decision that would draw protests across the country. Since then, 14 states have outlawed abortions. Still, some people in those states have been able to cut through barriers to get abortions via telehealth, according to a recent report from the research project #WeCount. Usually, this requires a virtual visit with a telehealth care provider. The provider assesses the patient and gets their information, then can mail them mifepristone and misoprostol, which aid in ending a pregnancy. The Supreme Court preserved access to mifepristone in a ruling this month, which means it can still be prescribed and mailed to patients. Marketplace’s Lily Jamali discussed the increase in telehealth abortions with Ushma Upadhyay, professor of OB-GYN and reproductive sciences at the University of California, San Francisco, and a coauthor of the #WeCount report.

Following the overturning of Roe v. Wade, abortion funds have been working overtime to support skyrocketing amounts of patients in need. And while there was a large influx in donations to abortion funds after the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization Supreme Court case, those donations have waned in recent years. Lindsey Mullen, Co-Executive Director of the Alabama Cohosh Collaborative and Natalie Price, board member of the Fountain Street Choice Fund, sits down to talk with us about abortion funds, practical support funds, and their work and needs in the years after Dobbs. Targeted regulation of abortion provider (TRAP) laws are increasing after Dobbs. These laws often impact a clinic's ability to keep staff or stay open, and many staff have lost their employment or seen their clinics close. Closures force patients to have to look and travel even farther for care-- sometimes outside state lines. Telehealth needs have been amplified, with many depending on telehealth care for self-managing their abortion, while some states continue to see their maternal health care desert grow due to a loss of practicing OB/GYNs. With waning financial support, it's increasingly difficult for abortion funds and practical support funds to continue to provide people access and assistance.Support the Show.Follow Us on Social: Twitter: @rePROsFightBack Instagram: @reprosfbFacebook: rePROs Fight Back Email us: jennie@reprosfightback.comRate and Review on Apple PodcastThanks for listening & keep fighting back!

Today, on April 24, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in a case that will determine the future of emergency abortion care. At issue in the case of Idaho v. United States is whether or not doctors in states where abortion is banned have to continue to deny abortion care—even in emergency settings—despite the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), which requires all hospitals to provide life saving and medically stabilizing health care to anyone who shows up at their emergency room. Currently, medical providers in Idaho can only perform an abortion in the event that the pregnant person will imminently die without one. Even if a pregnant person will incur permanent disability or undue harm to their life without an abortion, the procedure is still banned. As you can imagine, these two laws have put doctors in a precarious position in Idaho. The circumstances are even more dire for pregnant patients in the state, particularly those with disabilities. Disabled pregnant people are far more likely to necessitate this kind of care than their non-disabled peers, as most disabled pregnant folks already have high risk pregnancies. Disabled people know all too well the risks of not accessing care when it's needed, and the hardship, pain, and suffering that can escape the claw of “imminent death.” So, today we're talking about the intersection of disability and abortion rights, in regard to this case and more broadly. Joining me to discuss this is Dr. Robyn Powell, an associate professor at the University of Oklahoma College of Law, specializing in disability and family law. She's also a co-investigator at the National Research Center for Parents with Disabilities.

The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act, or EMTALA, is a statute passed by Congress in 1986 to ensure that nobody who is experiencing a medical emergency is turned away from receiving health care. But this week, the Supreme Court will hear arguments challenging EMTALA as it relates to emergency abortion care. Katie O'Connor, Director of Federal Abortion Policy at the National Women's Law Center sits down to talk with us about the potential impacts of this ruling. Under EMTALA, an emergency medical condition is defined “as a condition in which, without immediate medical attention, a patient's health or life is in serious jeopardy.” The statute does not make exceptions for state law, the personal beliefs of providers, or hospitals of religious affiliation. For pregnant people, abortion care can be a very necessary, time-sensitive, and sometimes life-saving health service. State-level abortion bans are already forcing patients to travel hours and long distances to receive care, and providers to leave the hostile states they are practicing in. EMTALA's ruling may narrow, even more, the already constricted landscape that patients and providers find themselves navigating in the United States—especially for those who are experiencing an emergency.Support the showFollow Us on Social: Twitter: @rePROsFightBack Instagram: @reprosfbFacebook: rePROs Fight Back Email us: jennie@reprosfightback.comRate and Review on Apple PodcastThanks for listening & keep fighting back!

The overturning of Roe v. Wade in June of 2022 dealt a severe blow to women's health care in the United States. Today, nearly half of states in the country ban or severely restrict abortion care. The ripple effects reach far wider: hospitals are shutting maternity wards, and OB-GYNs are leaving states that don't allow them to provide essential care to their patients.    On today's episode, Hillary talks to two leaders in the fight to provide the reproductive health care all women deserve.    Illinois governor J. B. Pritzker has helped shepherd into law some of the strongest abortion protections in the country, not only for his constituents but for anyone seeking abortion care, regardless of their ability to pay. He talks to Hillary about why this fight is his fight, and about the intended and unintended consequences of anti-choice legislators' draconian laws.   Dr. Yashica Robinson, an OB-GYN and the medical director of the Alabama Women's Center in Huntsville, has been on the front lines of reproductive health care in her state for decades. Throughout that time, state legislators and the Alabama Department of Health have thrown up roadblocks to prevent her patients–mostly low income women of color– from accessing the care they need and deserve. She shares with Hillary the work she's doing to improve their outcomes, in the state with the highest maternal mortality rates in the country, including opening the state's first birth center, and explains why she cannot give up hope in the face of relentless opposition.   You can read a full transcript HERE.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
