The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 396: Yoga for Abortion Care with Sasha Sigel   Description: We live in a time when access to abortion care is increasingly under threat and attacks on reproductive health are intensifying. What does yoga have to do with abortion care and how can yoga teachers support people going through abortion care before, during, and after the process? Sasha Sigel shares her insights. Sasha Sigel is a pelvic floor yoga teacher, Reiki practitioner, and abortion doula. Sasha is also a cofounder of a queer yoga collective called Be Queer Now, which offers virtual and in-person programming for the queer community. In her work, Sasha focuses on folks in the LGBTQIA+ community seeking pelvic health support as well as offering trauma-informed, gender-affirming practices. When Roe v Wade was overturned in 2022, she trained to be an abortion doula where she supports folks going through abortion care with accurate information and practical, emotional, and physical support. In this episode, Sasha shares more how how yoga intersects with reproductive justice and how we can lean on the foundational values of yoga to guide us in supporting people through their reproductive choices. Sasha also explains how yoga is more than just movement – it is a liberatory practice that can offer space for validation, rest, and healing, especially for those who've experienced abortion or miscarriage. Tune in to learn more about the barriers many people face when accessing care, how community doulas and yoga teachers can safely show up, and why normalizing abortion as a part of human healthcare is a crucial part of our work as compassionate spaceholders.    Key Takeaways: [2:20] Shannon gives a shout out to sponsor, OfferingTree. We don't know why this person got an abortion. We don't know what their experience was. So our main role is going to be listening to whatever information they do give us."   "How people report their experience after an abortion is often mixed and complicated, but very seldom is the main emotion or experience regret."   "This is not new. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against a New York physician, Dr. Margaret Daley Carpenter, accusing her of illegally prescribing abortion pills to a Texas woman via telehealth in violation of Texas laws. Paxton claims the medication caused complications requiring hospitalization and is seeking at least $100,000 in civil penalties for each violation. The lawsuit is one of the first to challenge state shield laws to protect out-of-state doctors providing abortion care after Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022. New York Attorney General Letitia James condemned the move, vowing to defend reproductive rights and protect physicians providing legal care. The legal clash highlights the deepening divide over reproductive rights and the aggressive push by Texas to enforce its near-total abortion ban. Learn more about your ad choices. Dr. Warren Hern's book, Abortion in the Age of Unreason: A Doctor's Account of Caring for Women Before and After Roe v. Wade, chronicles the difficult realities of providing abortion care amidst a polarized political and social climate. Drawing from personal experiences, Hern describes protecting patients and staff from aggressive protesters and emphasizes the critical need for abortion services to protect women's health. His work also highlights insights from his research in Latin America, underscoring abortion's role in addressing national and global public health challenges. Hern argues that the recent dismantling of Roe v. Wade has intensified a long-standing crisis, which now endangers democracy as political groups exploit the issue to gain power. His book exposes the real risks of restricted access and urges for political action to safeguard reproductive rights, stressing that women's need for safe abortion services is an essential, ongoing component of healthcare and freedom. Warren M. Hern, M.D., is known to the public through his many appearances on CNN, Rachel Maddow/MSNBC, Sixty Minutes, and in the pages of The Atlantic magazine, The New York Times, Washington Post, and dozens more media. A scientist, Hern wrote about the need for safe abortion services before the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision and was present at the first Supreme Court arguments. In his research and medical work, he pioneered since 1973 the modern safe practice of early and late abortion in his highly influential books and scholarship. A tireless national activist for women's reproductive rights, he is an adjunct professor of anthropology at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and holds a clinical appointment in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Colorado medical center. He holds doctorates in medicine and epidemiology. His book is Abortion in the Age of Unreason: A Doctor's Account of Caring for Women Before and After Roe v. Wade. Shermer and Hern discuss Hern's journey into abortion care, abortion history pre- and post-Roe, and the complex procedures involved. They explore the risks of pregnancy versus abortion, societal and political challenges like protests and threats, and the debate over fetal personhood. Hern also delves into the broader implications of abortion rights on democracy and society, shedding light on contentious issues surrounding reproductive health.

Keywords: abortion, perinatal care, women's rights, personal choice, government intervention, healthcare access, miscarriage, reproductive rights, trauma, maternal death Justine and Sarah recorded this episode of the Resilient Birth podcast on abortion access and abortion care the day before the election in the US. At the time of recording, we thought we'd be releasing it after the results were known, but the topic felt so vital to this current moment, that we decided to release it on the day of recording as our first emergency podcast. We hope that our conversation today opens your hearts to the experiences of women who need access to medical care, whether that is to save their lives or to make the choices that are right for themselves and their babies. Sarah begins our conversation by sharing a quote by John Legend who lost his son Jack when his wife needed an abortion to save her life, and who has spoken up against the government being the ones to decide women are "sufficiently dying" before they are given life saving care. In this episode, Sarah also explores the powerful stories from the On Point podcast episode called “The Truth About Perinatal Hospice Care”. This podcast lifts the veil on perinatal hospice care and reveals the truth about the loving decisions families are making to honor their babies and their brief lives. The conversation emphasizes the need for compassion, understanding, and the recognition of women's rights in making personal health decisions. They also highlight the emotional weight of these decisions and the dangerous implications of restricting access to abortion care which has already resulted in maternal deaths in the United States. Takeaways Access to abortion care is essential for women's health and safety. Government intervention can strip families of their rights. Perinatal hospice care provides compassionate support to families and often provides them with precious time with their babies. Abortion access is a matter of safety and choice. Misconceptions about abortion care need to be addressed. The current election can significantly impact reproductive rights. The voices of those affected must be uplifted. Compassion and empathy are vital in these discussions. Sound Bites "Abortion saves people's lives." "This is causing perinatal trauma." "What is sufficiently dying?" "We need to listen to each other." "I am here to walk with you." Through an inspirational quote that drives our weekly conversations about trauma and healing, Justine and Sarah explore topics such as birth trauma, parenting as a survivor, and finding healing with vulnerability and compassion that support birthing people and birth professionals. Each week, listeners leave with takeaways to utilize in their lives and/or clients. Justine and Sarah hold the stories they share with honor and respect with the hope to impart knowledge, increase understanding, and bear witness to this challenging topic. Sarah is a licensed mental health counselor, educator, and mom of three. She walks with a story of trauma from before and as a result of her perinatal experience. Justine supports survivors of trauma through perinatal coaching and childbirth education. As well as being a mother of three, she holds a Ph.D. on representations of consent and sexual violence. The Midwest is a patchwork of different abortion laws—while some states like Michigan and Minnesota have protected access, others have completely banned care, like Indiana and Missouri. Garnet Henderson, Senior Multiplatform Reporter at Rewire News Group and host and producer of ACCESS: A Podcast About Abortion, sits down to talk with us about abortion access in the Midwest, including how it may be further impacted by recent funding changes to the National Abortion Federation and Planned Parenthood Federation of America.People residing in or near states that have banned abortion often travel to Illinois for care (although some may also travel to states like Nebraska, Minnesota, and Kansas), which was the state with the single largest increase in its abortion rate after Dobbs due to out-of-state travelers. These states are having to absorb skyrocketing rates of traveling patients on top of in-state patients seeking care. Iowa's abortion restrictions and abysmal access rates to OB/GYN care and maternity care has resulted in maternity care deserts across large swaths of the state, and a shocking 61% of hospitals in rural areas having no labor and delivery service. Simultaneously, the Justice Fund, a financial assistance fund for low-income patients which is shared between PPFA and NAF, has been reduced with less than a month's notice from 50% coverage per patient to 30%. This leaves patients with an even more shrunken lifeline to access.Support the Show.Follow Us on Social: Twitter: @rePROsFightBack Instagram: @reprosfbFacebook: rePROs Fight Back Email us: jennie@reprosfightback.comRate and Review on Apple PodcastThanks for listening & keep fighting back!

SCOTUS Chat: Recorded live with Jess Braverman, Gender Justice Legal Director and Erin Maye Quade, Gender Justice Special Projects Advisor On June 27, 2024, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its decision in Idaho v. United States and Moyle et al., or the “EMTALA” (Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act) case, which centers on whether state abortion bans supersede the federal EMTALA law mandating that hospital emergency departments receiving federal funding must stabilize a patient whose life or health is at risk.  In its long-awaited decision, the Court sent the case back to the lower courts, where. It also reinstated a lower court's ruling permitting doctors to provide emergency abortion care even where such care conflicts with Idaho's abortion ban—but not before several patients had to be airlifted out of Idaho to receive emergency health care because of the Court's initial decision. By punting on what should be a straightforward ruling, the Supreme Court effectively condones the denial of emergency abortion care.  In this SCOTUS Chat, Gender Justice Special Projects Advisor Erin Maye Quade and Legal Director Jess Braverman share their analysis of the Supreme Court ruling. Usually, this requires a virtual visit with a telehealth care provider. After Abortion Care and Healing, with Serena Dyksen

Finding God in Our Pain

You will be so encouraged to hear all that my guest, Serena Dyksen has to share. Serena is an author, speaker and she and her husband Bruce are the Chief Visionary Officers for the ministry, She Found His Grace. After Serena found healing for her abortion, she accepted God's invitation to spearhead His plan to bring healing and restoration to others just like her. Per their website SheFoundHisGrace.org, their mission is “For men and women to find forgiveness after abortion and be set free from shame, guilt and regret. Turning our pain into purpose.”                  I'll start with this statistic that Serena shared however, this episode does not shame or guilt anyone. You'll hear Serena share her abortion experience at the age of 13 and how it impacted her life for many years, even in ways she didn't connect with the abortion. We are discussing truths, facts, personal stories and examples but only encouragement for those who are hurting is what you'll hear. Serena shared that 63 million babies have been lost to abortion so that made me think about the ripple effect. If we want to look at, say a ballpark figur with regard to the level of pain that is present in our communities, our families, our churches we can't forget that there is a set of parents. We need to remember that the abortion has affected 2 additional people (per baby) who will potentially live with guilt and shame. She Found His Grace Ministry has a mission to provide post abortion healing so mothers and fathers can find forgiveness, purpose and redemption. Every hurting heart that connects with She Found His Grace is pointed to the only One who can do such a transformational work of the heart. Only God is the superior opponent for satan. God is the only reason we can know anything good in the reality of a broken world and an enemy who hates us. God has the power and the authority to use the very thing that satan meant to destroy you with and give it purpose in your life. Victory over sin and shame is God's expertise. How can we experience a come back from one of life's most devastating choices? Jesus' example on the cross and his resurrection is for us today and He offers us that same ability to rise again to new life in Him. Yes, we'll know new life in eternity with Him but the God of the Holy Bible is alive and active in our life today and he offers us new life. New life to experience and to know it in the here and now. I stress this because I want you to know that you can never go too far and that you are not alone in your pain and confusion. Throughout this podcast episode you'll hear reason after reason to reinforce this truth. Serena and I talked about so many things one of which was how the abortion pill has shifted the abortion clinic from an office environment into the personal home. This move shifts the responsibility and magnifies how the mom is even more isolated in her abortion experience. Something that Serena is hearing more and more is that when the so called “clump of cells” passes from the body looks more like a baby than the women were prepared for. The level of trauma is layers deep. What are they supposed to do under those circumstances because abortion clinics do not offer any after care even though they know how traumatizing it is for their customers. Something that I wasn't aware of and I don't hear it being talked about AT ALL is the abortion pill reversal option. Serena shares some helpful and encouraging information and a beautiful testimony of a woman who regretted taking the abortion pill, took action within the required timeframe, received and took the reversal antidote pill and was able to deliver a healthy baby. Here's a perspective I never considered, on the She Found His Grace website there are personal stories from siblings who grieve the loss of the aborted baby and Serena shares that these are some of the most passionate supporters because they see the healing transformation their family experiences and they want that for other families too. There is a lot of heartbreaking aspects about abortion but something Serena talked about was the various types of abuse experienced in abortion clinics. This caused me to wondered out loud how much worse it could get especially if the woman shows any indication that she may not get the abortion. Something precious we talked about was the event Serena hosts and it's when mothers and fathers give dignity to their children and part of that experience is to name their child. Serena almost had me in tears hearing how beautiful God is to not only make it okay to acknowledge the life of the child, but to give him/her an identity with a name and to create a family bond. That's so God's heart; family, relationship. Yet another reason why He wants more than anything for you to bring Him your pain. You're His son or daughter and He wants to heal you. After this conversation and getting a glimpse into Serena's passion to facilitate healing for the men and women who have experienced abortion I was left with the lingering impression on my heart of the powerful impact that a once broken heart made whole in Jesus can realistically have on those around them. Every healed heart becomes a voice and gives courage for other broken hearts to find healing as well…Think about how Serena herself found healing and gave God her yes in obedience and look at what He's done with her transformed heart. If the gospel started with 12 transformed lives and has reached around the globe, I'm in awe to think what's possible with each ripple affect that individual people will start and the contribution they'll make for post abortion healing throughout the continents. All the more reason to find healing for guilt, shame, condemnation because when you do, it flips the table on satan's plans to destroy your life. Letting God rewrite the painful places with His extravagant love, forgiveness, restoration, grace, mercy and all the beautiful ways that He cares for us and heals us, that's true victory. Let's listen in to hear all that Serena has to share. Not only is it very interesting and life changing but I love to hear the joy in her voice. God has done a good work because even her laughter is a testimony that with God it'll all work out for our good and His glory. Lived Loved and Thrive! Despite such strides, gaps in access remain. And these new freedoms stand on the precipice of being stripped after the overturning of Roe v. Wade. We'll hear from a trio of healthcare providers, who discovered a major barrier to virtual abortion care and created an organization of their own to address it.In this episode, we're talking about how virtual abortion care rose to prominence, and what it will take to continue fighting for access to this essential.Learn more about how you can build change at actblue.com/buildthechange or follow us on Instagram and TikTok.

Following the overturning of Roe v. Wade, abortion funds have been working overtime to support skyrocketing amounts of patients in need. And while there was a large influx in donations to abortion funds after the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization Supreme Court case, those donations have waned in recent years. Lindsey Mullen, Co-Executive Director of the Alabama Cohosh Collaborative and Natalie Price, board member of the Fountain Street Choice Fund, sits down to talk with us about abortion funds, practical support funds, and their work and needs in the years after Dobbs. Targeted regulation of abortion provider (TRAP) laws are increasing after Dobbs. These laws often impact a clinic's ability to keep staff or stay open, and many staff have lost their employment or seen their clinics close. Closures force patients to have to look and travel even farther for care-- sometimes outside state lines. Telehealth needs have been amplified, with many depending on telehealth care for self-managing their abortion, while some states continue to see their maternal health care desert grow due to a loss of practicing OB/GYNs. With waning financial support, it's increasingly difficult for abortion funds and practical support funds to continue to provide people access and assistance.Support the Show.Follow Us on Social: Twitter: @rePROsFightBack Instagram: @reprosfbFacebook: rePROs Fight Back Email us: jennie@reprosfightback.comRate and Review on Apple PodcastThanks for listening & keep fighting back!

Today, on April 24, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in a case that will determine the future of emergency abortion care. At issue in the case of Idaho v. United States is whether or not doctors in states where abortion is banned have to continue to deny abortion care—even in emergency settings—despite the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), which requires all hospitals to provide life saving and medically stabilizing health care to anyone who shows up at their emergency room. Currently, medical providers in Idaho can only perform an abortion in the event that the pregnant person will imminently die without one. Even if a pregnant person will incur permanent disability or undue harm to their life without an abortion, the procedure is still banned. As you can imagine, these two laws have put doctors in a precarious position in Idaho. The circumstances are even more dire for pregnant patients in the state, particularly those with disabilities. Disabled pregnant people are far more likely to necessitate this kind of care than their non-disabled peers, as most disabled pregnant folks already have high risk pregnancies. Disabled people know all too well the risks of not accessing care when it's needed, and the hardship, pain, and suffering that can escape the claw of “imminent death.” So, today we're talking about the intersection of disability and abortion rights, in regard to this case and more broadly. Joining me to discuss this is Dr. Robyn Powell, an associate professor at the University of Oklahoma College of Law, specializing in disability and family law. She's also a co-investigator at the National Research Center for Parents with Disabilities.

The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act, or EMTALA, is a statute passed by Congress in 1986 to ensure that nobody who is experiencing a medical emergency is turned away from receiving health care. But this week, the Supreme Court will hear arguments challenging EMTALA as it relates to emergency abortion care. Katie O'Connor, Director of Federal Abortion Policy at the National Women's Law Center sits down to talk with us about the potential impacts of this ruling. Under EMTALA, an emergency medical condition is defined “as a condition in which, without immediate medical attention, a patient's health or life is in serious jeopardy.” The statute does not make exceptions for state law, the personal beliefs of providers, or hospitals of religious affiliation. For pregnant people, abortion care can be a very necessary, time-sensitive, and sometimes life-saving health service. State-level abortion bans are already forcing patients to travel hours and long distances to receive care, and providers to leave the hostile states they are practicing in. EMTALA's ruling may narrow, even more, the already constricted landscape that patients and providers find themselves navigating in the United States—especially for those who are experiencing an emergency.Support the showFollow Us on Social: Twitter: @rePROsFightBack Instagram: @reprosfbFacebook: rePROs Fight Back Email us: jennie@reprosfightback.comRate and Review on Apple PodcastThanks for listening & keep fighting back!

The overturning of Roe v. Wade in June of 2022 dealt a severe blow to women's health care in the United States. Today, nearly half of states in the country ban or severely restrict abortion care. The ripple effects reach far wider: hospitals are shutting maternity wards, and OB-GYNs are leaving states that don't allow them to provide essential care to their patients.    On today's episode, Hillary talks to two leaders in the fight to provide the reproductive health care all women deserve.    Illinois governor J. B. Pritzker has helped shepherd into law some of the strongest abortion protections in the country, not only for his constituents but for anyone seeking abortion care, regardless of their ability to pay. He talks to Hillary about why this fight is his fight, and about the intended and unintended consequences of anti-choice legislators' draconian laws.   Dr. Yashica Robinson, an OB-GYN and the medical director of the Alabama Women's Center in Huntsville, has been on the front lines of reproductive health care in her state for decades. Throughout that time, state legislators and the Alabama Department of Health have thrown up roadblocks to prevent her patients–mostly low income women of color– from accessing the care they need and deserve. She shares with Hillary the work she's doing to improve their outcomes, in the state with the highest maternal mortality rates in the country, including opening the state's first birth center, and explains why she cannot give up hope in the face of relentless opposition.   You can read a full transcript HERE.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
