Dr. Jenna Priestap is back once again! In this episode, we dive into all things third trimester and how we prepare now for a smoother postpartum experience later. We talk about why there is typically no additional bloodwork done in the third trimester and how second trimester lab work is used proactively to reduce the risk of postpartum mood disorders. We also discuss GBS swab prep, oral and vaginal probiotics, and labour preparation. A big part of this conversation focuses on postpartum preparation, including boundaries with visitors, the kind of help to ask for, and why setting expectations before baby arrives is one of the most protective things you can do for your mental health. We also talk about postpartum nutrition, blood sugar balance, healing foods, and why traditional comfort food can sometimes make recovery harder instead of easier. I also share what this third trimester has looked like for me personally, including energy levels, bodywork, physical discomfort, mindset shifts, the postpartum prep I have been doing, and how I am approaching my birthing day. Whether you are pregnant, preparing for postpartum, trying to conceive, or simply curious about what this stage really looks like, I can't wait for you to listen! New supplements mentioned: NFH Flora SAP, homeopathics that I never ended up taking since baby girl came early (Boiron Actaea Racemosa/Cimicifuga 200CH, Boiron Caulophyllum Thalictroides 200CH, Boiron Arnica 1M) and EPO SAP by NFH. This episode is going to be a really raw and real one! I'm talking all about my experience in trimester three of pregnancy - juggling teaching fitness classes, running my small business, working part-time in the family business and just… life in general.I break it all down into sections: the physical side, the emotional side, the medical stuff and the prep and lessons learned. I'm sharing what it's actually like - the good, the surprising, and yes, even the weird moments - so if you're pregnant, thinking about getting pregnant, or just curious about my journey so far, this is for you.Expect tales of feeling crazy strong kicks (sometimes at the worst possible moments), discovering the joys of swelling ankles and expanding rib cages and a few “what on earth is happening to my body?!” moments. I also talk about keeping up with exercise, adapting workouts and why strength training has been my absolute saviour during pregnancy. On the emotional side, I get honest about the nerves, the excitement and the “how am I going to do all of this?!” moments, plus why a maternity photoshoot was honestly one of the best things I did for myself.I also cover the practical side: RSV and whooping cough vaccines, extra midwife appointments, birth plans, nursery prep and the very surreal experience of a home visit... Haha!Basically, this is me, weeks 28 to 38, keeping it real about pregnancy, fitness, work, life and all the little surprises along the way. If you want a peek behind the scenes of what it's like balancing it all while getting ready to meet baby Bell, this episode is for you.

For 20 years, Dr. Shelley Sella saw patients whose diverse backgrounds and circumstances led them to the same difficult decision: to end their pregnancies. In her new book, Beyond Limits, Sella draws from her experiences to offer a window into a typical week at her clinic, weaving together patient stories—including those of a mother navigating a devastating prenatal diagnosis, a woman confronting unexpected test results after IVF, and a parent weighing safety and stability for her existing children. Dr. Sella offers a testament to a standard of care grounded in competence, compassion, and sensitivity, as well as a call for a paradigm shift that moves beyond Dobbs, beyond Roe, beyond limits to provide care. It is a tribute to the real people whose hearts, reasons, and stories are more complex than politicized conversations about abortion lead us to believe. Dr. Shelley Sella is a board-certified OB-GYN and the first woman to openly practice third-trimester abortion care in the US, which she did for 20 years. She was prominently featured in the Emmy Award–winning documentary After Tiller. Dr. Sella served two terms on the board of the National Abortion Federation and in 2022 was awarded its highest honor, the Christopher Tietze Humanitarian Award. She is retired from clinical practice and now focuses on advocacy. Amelia Bonow is the Cofounder and Executive Director of Shout Your Abortion, a nationwide organization working to normalize abortion and elevate safe paths to access, regardless of legality. Amelia is the coeditor of SYA's eponymously titled book, which sits in the recovery rooms of hundreds of abortion clinics, as well as Abortion is Everything, a new children's book about abortion. Amelia is honored to serve as the Co-chair of the Board of Directors of Abortion Care Network, the national organization that serves and represents independent abortion providers. At 34 weeks pregnant, I'm sharing all the latest on our home build, pregnancy with baby #9, and what life is like in this full season. In this episode, we cover: Slow building progress continues, but the slower pace has allowed for more thoughtful, intentional decisions Finalized historic design elements like trim profiles, wall materials, and appliance choices— finding excitement in the progress even if it's gradual Chimneys are now bricked and the garage is roofed with wide-seamed metal that perfectly fits the historic vibe— a happy surprise with no overthinking! Main house will feature cedar shake roofing, while the porches and additions have metal to embrace the “old house with add-ons” story Reflections on how proportions, window placement, and overall structure are beautifully bringing to life the original vision of a “new old house” Pregnancy update at 34 weeks: similar symptoms and baby position as past pregnancies, feeling confident and ready Choosing minimal prenatal interventions— tracking iron and glucose at home, keeping midwife visits sparse Sharing our personal approach to open windows with no screens or storm doors for an indoor-outdoor connection Thoughts on Doppler use in labor and delivery— balancing caution with practical monitoring when needed View full show notes on the blog + watch this episode on YouTube. As we face a government that is active in its efforts to remove people's ability to make decisions about what happens in their own bodies, Dr. Shelley Sella challenges even the framework that imposing any limits on abortion access means that we are not truly providing the room to choose. Sella is a board certified OB GYN and the first woman to openly practice third trimester abortion care in the U.S. She recently retired from that work and compiled some of her deeply humanizing experiences, stories, reflections and hopes into a brand new book called Beyond Limits Stories of Third Trimester Abortion Care. — Subscribe to this podcast: https://plinkhq.com/i/1637968343?to=page Get in touch: lawanddisorder@kpfa.org Follow us on socials @LawAndDis: https://twitter.com/LawAndDis; https://www.instagram.com/lawanddis/ The post Beyond Limits: Understanding Third Trimester Abortion Care w/ Dr. Shelley Sella appeared first on KPFA.

Leading up to the November election, Science Friday is covering top science issues on the ballot. For voters, those top issues include abortion.Since the Dobbs ruling overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022, many states have curtailed access to abortion, and 13 states have a total abortion ban.The election season in particular, there's been a focus on abortions in the third trimester of pregnancy. Some of the political rhetoric is inflammatory and false. But even among politicians who support abortion rights, there's a tendency to deflect attention away from these procedures later in pregnancy.Though third trimester abortions are rare, they make up about 1% of abortions in the United States and are often the most stigmatized. They are legal in only a small number of states, and just a fraction of providers perform them.To better understand the real science behind abortions later in pregnancy, guest host Sophie Bushwick talks with Dr. Katrina Kimport, professor of obstetrics, gynecology & reproductive sciences at the University of California, San Francisco; and Dr. Cara Heuser, a maternal and fetal medicine physician who specializes in high risk pregnancy and complex abortion care, based in Salt Lake City, Utah. Subscribe to this podcast. Plus, to stay updated on all things science, sign up for Science Friday's newsletters.
