Wardruna is a Norwegian music constellation dedicated to weaving together the ancient sounds and traditions of the North into a modern soundscape using a broad selection of both traditional and historical Nordic instruments. The band utilises non-traditional instruments and other sources of sound such as trees, stones, bones, water and fire to enhance the nature of the theme being ‘portrayed' in each case.Over five previous albums, Wardruna have captivated audiences on a global scale with the sheer majesty of their music, breathing life into tradition by way of sonic inspiration like never before. For album number six, Birna, Wardruna - particularly main composer Einar Selvik - chose to focus on the bear, an animal which has great power and respect amongst many societies, including Norwegian.HEAVY spent some time with Selvik to speak about Birna, which will be released on January 24, 2025, and Wardruna's debut Australian visit that same month."It's a musical project dedicated to creating music using a wide selection of the oldest instruments we have from predominantly the Nordic region," he explained of the band. "It's not recreating music from any specific time period, it's more about taking something old and creating something new with it. We just finished up in studio hibernation, finishing our sixth studio album entitled Birna - Birna meaning she bear. It is set for release in January next year, so basically when we are Down Under!"In the full interview, we discussed Birna in greater detail, including the cultural and historical significance of the bear in various societies. Selvik explained that bears often play a significant role in myths and traditions, being seen as teachers, wardens, or shepherds of the woodlands. Einar also mentioned that bears are associated with celestial beings, such as the Greek star sign named after the bear.We spoke about the different instruments used and their impact on the music, blending ancient ideologies and instruments with modern soundscapes, the live DVD/Blu-Ray release from the world heritage site Odeon of Herodes Atticus, Acropolis, Athens, touring Australia for the first time, what we can expect and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Welcome to the 8th episode of our Trilogies series. We hope you enjoyed our last episode where we looked at The Apu Trilogy directed by Satyajit Ray. This episode we are looking at comic book movie cinema. The main subject of this trilogy just had their 85th birthday. Batman himself created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. This episode we discuss and review The Dark Knight Trilogy: Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012). Each starring Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman and directed by Christopher Nolan. After Batman & Robin bombed critically and earned a modest intake at the box office, the Batman franchise lay dormant for a while. Films like a fifth Batman film set to have George Clooney return as Batman was cancelled, along with a Batman: Year One adaptation. Christopher Nolan fresh off the indie success of Following, Memento and also Insomnia, his first big studio film, was tasked to bring the character back to life. His take on the Batman mythos was a lot more grounded in realism and more character based and less of the Toyetic films Joel Schumacher were directing last time. Nolan's three Batman films are some of the best and influential superhero films of all time and he really shows you how its done. He tells a great and moving cinematic tale over three films and finishes the trilogy (mostly) in a satisfying way. You can find The Dark Knight trilogy to stream on Max and you can also find it on DVD/Blu-Ray.We hope you continue to enjoy this new Trilogies Series we're doing and we also hope you enjoy this episode.Stay Tuned for more!During the podcast we talk about this man: comic creator and writer Bill Finger. Bill Finger for a long time was not credited for co-creating Batman while Bob Kane received sole credit. He was a key figure in creating that character and actually had a lot of substantial input into bringing Batman to life. You can learn more about his story in the documentary Batman & Bill. You can see the trailer here. Anders's screenwriter work can also be seen in the western The Outlaws which is a available to watch in the US & the UK on Amazon and Apple TV.

Welcome back to CYBERPUNK CINEMA - the definitive dive into the dark future of science fiction. In this week's episode, I will breakdown STRANGE DAYS (1995), a certifiable cyberpunk masterpiece. To me, this is definitely in the Top Ten CPUNK! I saw this film in the theater when I was 16, and I absolutely loved it! It was directed by Kathryn Bigelow and co-written/co-produced by James Cameron. This cyberpunk techno-thriller hits all the hallmarks of the genre, and has recently been re-discovered by a newer generation since the film was stuck in DVD/BluRay jail for years, and could not be seen by the public until MAX finally released it recently. Check it out! It's incredible.Cyberpunk Cinema Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/cyberpunk.cinemaAnthony's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/stormgiantproductionsSignal Fragment SoundCloud - https://soundcloud.com/signalfragment

James Cameron-Wilson takes Simon Rose through the latest UK box office chart, with takings down 9%. Trolls Band Together, the third in the series, is the new #1 with a take of £3m. Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon took £2.5m at #2. Majestic, brutal and based on a true story, James found Robert de Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio's acting overshadowed by Lily Gladstone, who is favourite to pick up the Best Actress Oscar. Impressive though the film is he thought it too long at three and a half hours. Watching Barbie again now it's out on DVD/BluRay, James was equally impressed and found many things to enjoy he had missed the first time. He also tells how it is getting around Russia's Hollywood movie ban. Learn more about your ad choices.

The list is endless but we're excited to talk about some of the best format wars the 20th century and early 21st century has had to offer. Who am I? What is true? Human beings have posed these questions as long as they have been able to think. In this six-week class we will take a look at a few of the most enduring approaches to these questions. We will consider ideas about the purpose of human life, the means and ends of self-knowledge, and the challenge of discerning what is really true. Instructor: Lyn Mattoon See this instructor's bio Get Class List Location: ZOOM Times: Tuesday, 1-3pm Dates: Jan 17 - March 7 Sessions: 8 decorative leaf Alexis de Tocqueville: Democracy in America In 1831, Alexis de Tocqueville, a young French aristocrat, traveled to America and found the future. The nations of the earth, he concluded, or at least the enlightened part of them, were moving inevitably toward a condition of social equality that in the world of politics was taking the form of democracy. This new kind of polity was rising on the ruins of the old, hierarchical societies, and the young republic was the clearest example of it. Previous visitors from overseas had concentrated on the minutiae of daily American life, but Tocqueville was after bigger game. He wanted to tease out the broad implications of increasing social equality and democracy rather than focus on the details that were bound to differ from one nation to another. These implications then would have the widest possible relevance to the various societies of the emerging modern world. This new dispensation, Tocqueville realized, was full of both promise and peril, and he devoted himself to transmitting this balanced assessment to his European contemporaries. The book that resulted, Democracy in America, has been called the "greatest work ever written about one country by a citizen of another." Because his conclusions were so general and of such wide application his book appropriately addressed the Americans of his own time, his fellow citizens in France still trying to come to terms with the modern world, and, not least, speaks to our own distracted society today, the uneasy inheritor of the raw republic in whose image he saw the future. I'll include a PowerPoint presentation to illustrate my talks. Instructor: Robert Rumsey See this instructor's bio Get Class List Location: Noble Horizons Times: Wednesday, 1-3pm Dates: Jan 18 - Feb 22 Sessions: 6 decorative leaf Experimental Cinema: A six-session session course on the history and the development of Experimental Cinema This course attempts to present the participants a historical view of the genre, styles and the role of the filmmakers who developed and perfected the concept and the vision of Experimental Cinema. Invention of the movie camera offered a broad and diverse tool for artists to express their own interpretation of nature and life around them. Camera became another tool, a "brush" for artists to create moving images which projected their own aesthetic principles and perceptions. There will be a presentation of early cinema from France, Soviet Union, England and the United States. Early films by the Lumiere Brothers to Andy Warhol and how through ages, cinema has evolved from a vehicle to tell a story or document everyday life, to a tool expressing an individual artist's personal vision. Through the sessions of the lectures there will be an ongoing discussion about the goal for Experimental Films, which is to place the viewer in a more active and more thoughtful relationship to the film, which will be discussed. The 6 sessions will be an opportunity for the participants to understand this particular form of cinema and the various expressions and theorizations from various artists. The sessions will be coordinated with projections of stills from movies and at the end of each session there will be screening of a film, and an open discussion by the participants. During the entire sessions of the courses, informal and open-minded discussions of opinions will be encouraged. SPECIAL NOTE: Donald Sosin who is a well regarded musician and has composed musical scores for may experimental films will be appearing at the Wednesday, January 18th session for the Experimental Cinema. please see details below. Donald Sosin is one of the world's foremost silent film composers, performing his keyboard and instrumental scores all over the world. From 1971 to the present he has performed at many of the world's leading venues for silent film, including Lincoln Center, MoMA, BAM, the TriBeCa Film Festival, and many festivals including Telluride, Denver, San Francisco and Seattle, as well as AFI Silver, the Yorkshire Silent Film Festival, the Thailand Silent FIlm Festival, Italy's two major festivals in Bologna and Pordenone, and the Jecheon International Music and Film Festival in South Korea. Donald and his wife Joanna Seaton are the only people in the world who have created a repertoire of new songs for silent films, and have performed at many of the above venues, as well as at many colleges (Yale, Emory, Brown, etc.) They teach workshops in silent film music, and created scores for over 60 DVD/Blu-Ray releases on the Criterion, Kino, Milestone, Flicker Alley and other labels. With klezmer violinist Alicia Svigals, Donald has written and recorded three scores for Jewish-themed silents which they perform live all over the US and Europe under the auspices of the Sunrise Foundation for Education and the Arts. Instructor: Larry&Carol Rand Get Class List Location: Zoom Times: Friday, 1-3pm Dates: Jan 20 - March 10 Sessions: 8 decorative leaf Shakespeare Playreading We'll read aloud and discuss Twelfth Night and A Midsummer Night's Dream . The two plays are often called "festive" comedies because each commemorates a significant day marked by popular license in the Elizabethan calendar. Twelfth Night refers to the last night of the twelve days of Christmas, and in spite of its religious origin it was a thoroughly secular celebration. A Midsummer Night's Dream takes its title from the evening before midsummer day, the summer solstice and the longest day of the year, when the prospect of warmth and lengthening days inspired much misbehavior. If time permits, we'll also read Troilus and Cressida, one of Shakespeare's so-called "problem plays," which contain both tragic and comic elements and thus resist easy placement in the canon. I'll scroll the texts of the plays on your screens. Instructor: Robert Rumsey See this instructor's bio Get Class List

Thanksgiving 2022 brought "The Beatles Get Back" to the world. Not just the monumental three-part documentary from Peter Jackson, but also the book, the SuperDeluxeEdition CD set, the streaming rooftop concert and eventually the unenhanced DVD/Blu-Ray set. This week and next we look all of these, the different ways things play between each unique set of media, and compare the book transcription to the Nagras we have had for "All These Years."

This is a very special episode. John Hudson joins me to discuss BOOGIE NIGHTS (1997) but that is only half the fun. We also got the chance to talk to actress Jane Hamilton who appears in the film as a judge. Under her stage name Veronica Hart, Miss Hamilton was a major star of adult movies in the period depicted in BOOGIE NIGHTS and is therefore the perfect person to answer questions about the industry and its onscreen Hollywood portrayal. She has many stories to tell and not just about the pornography business either. We had so much fun talking with her that the conversation went on for nearly an hour and a half with more than a few digressions! Hopefully you'll enjoy her tales as much as we did. We end the show with some classic adult film recommendations from Mr. Hudson which might send you off to your favorite DVD/Blu-Ray retailer to satisfy your curiosity. If you have any comments or suggestions thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to write. Or you could join us over on the FaceBook page but keep it clean or the Zuck will get us for sure. I've added a song from The Exotic Ones and thank you for listening!
