Jim and John have more fun than they deserve when they talk to legendary comics writers Gary Cohn and Dan Mishkin. Naturally we talk about their legendary creations Blue Devil and Amethyst Princess of Gemworld, but also other projects, their perspective on the industry then and now, a wacky Geoff Johns story, Halloween at Dan's house... even Leo Kottke comes up (?). Too much fun to squeeze into a paltry 40 minutes, but by god OWC is forever your trusted source for fun-squeezing.
What are friends for? Why, co-writing comics of course! Dan Mishkin and Gary Cohn (or Gary Cohn and Dan Mishkin if you like) are the dynamic duo behind big chunk of DC's 1980s output. They may be best known for creating the characters Amethyst (Princess of Gemworld) and Blue Devil. But after this episode, they'll be known for getting grilled by our own Bandit Oren in a 2-on-1 interview for the ages!________________________________If you liked this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld #1 by Dan Mishkin, Gary Cohn, Ernie Colón features the first full-length comic appearance of Amethyst, who would go on to appear in several more series over the next 35 years, plus a series of animated shorts.
This special episode of IRCB is brought to you by Erin who was kind enough to donate in support of the protests calling for racial justice. Kait and Kara took two Amethyst comics and put them head to head to discuss: Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld: The Birthright (1983) #1 Amethyst (2020) #1 Please consider donating to one of the many causes still in need right now.
Today we talk about Amethyst, the Princess of Gemworld, who is a human (or homo magi) girl who discovers she's can go to Gemworld where she has magic powers and is also an adult woman (except now she's the same age both places).Media specifically mentioned in today's episode: -Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld (1983) -Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld (1983) (TRADE) -Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld (1985) -Sword of Sorcery (2012) -Justice League Dark (2018) -Young Justice (2019) -Amethyst (2020) -DC Nation Shorts: Amethyst Princess of Gemworld -Check Please! Get ready for rainbows, ribbons, and transformations as we talk about one of our favorite subgenres of witchery: Magical Girls! Compare the catch-all magical combat abilities and indistinct gem-related powers of Usagi from “Sailor Moon” and Amethyst, DC Comics’ Princess of Gemworld. Also: 90’s kids will understand, America can’t have nice things, too few positive female friendships in media, Masters of the Universe, fighting about Infinity War (no spoilers), the U.S. women’s soccer team is amazing, it’s easy to forget DC continuity, transformation dance offs, and so much more! There have been a lot of tv shows based on DC superheroes, but there's never been one quite like AMETHYST - PRINCESS OF GEM WORLD! This short animated series about a teenager dragged into the world of her video game satirized RPG's, anime and the fantasy genre, all while telling the story of a good, old-fashioned heroes journey. But was the Cartoon Network/DC Nation series AMETHYST - PRINCESS OF GEM WORLD... canceled too soon?! We've got producer/director Brianne Drouhard in the studio to tell us how the show came to be, what the should would have become, and tons of stories about the production. Join Brianne Drouhard and your hosts William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold as our JUSTICE MONTH OF JUSTICE continues! And hey! Brianne Drouhard is also the creator of the web comic HARPY GEE! And so we come to the end of the Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld maxi-series with issues #9-12. How will the undoing of Opal be done? Will even more characters die bleak deaths guaranteed to scar young comics readers for life? Is it wrong for a woman who is mentally 13 years old to make out with a handsome but wishy-washy prince? Does Carnelian's pet snake really like him? Will The Mad Maple return to the letters pages before the maxi-series ends? And will Amethyst choose to stay in the Gemworld or to return home? Find out all of this and more. Or at least, hear us talk about it. And remember, kids, you can still review us under Another Kind of Distance, which is now our “podcasting network” (although, Opal-like, we prefer “podcasting empire”). In your review you can specify, “I like their comics episodes,” or “I like their time travel movie episodes.” Or, if pressed for time, you can just say, “Good,” or, “Pleasant,” or, “Appealing." We will consider it no less than a solid. Get in touch with Dave and Elise at bendaysofourlives@gmail.com or through our Facebook page for the show! Dave and Elise turn their attention to Elise's favourite non-team title from the 80s, Gary Cohn, Dan Mishkin, and Ernie Colon's AMETHYST: PRINCESS OF GEMWORLD maxi-series, and give an enthusiastic account of the first three issues (plus the preview in LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES vol. 2 #298). Elise is depressed to remember which of the characters shares her birthstone, tries to do a feminist theory analysis of Amethyst's nipples. Dave gets excited about the prominence of a golden retriever as a character. Get in touch with Dave and Elise at bendaysofourlives@gmail.com or through our brand new Facebook page for the show! Elise and Dave take a look at AMETHYST, PRINCESS OF GEMWORLD nos. 4-6, the point at which a 7-year-old Elise came in, in 1983. This run of issues features some of Ernie Colón's best artwork and two of the series' most memorable covers (as Elise can vouch), as well as some signs of hastiness. Dark Opal cranks up the evil; we meet new important Gemworld denizens; and the hosts ponder the question of what exactly happened to the eldest Princess Emerald. We're here with our penultimate AMETHYST: PRINCESS OF GEMWORLD original maxi-series episode: 3/4, covering issues #7-#9. Amethyst gets a love interest and a nifty wedding outfit, while continuing to prove that STEM subjects are way more important than English to being a Gemworld ruler. There are more sad, creepy deaths in families. Dark Opal gets even screwier as Amethyst thwarts more of his plans, needs a Twitter account. It's an extra large episode of NRR! Spin went to VA Comicon and sat down with the organizer of the con, the guys behind Gwar with Corotted Artistry, Samantha Brodek, the Game patrol and special interviews with Gary Cohn and Paris Cullen, two of the minds behind Amethyst Princess of Gem World from DC Comics and the original Red Power Ranger Austin St. John! Lots of discussion from the Renegades and some awesome interviews.
My look at 80 Years of DC Comics continues with a review of the fantasy genre of comics, one that spans much of the company's publishing history. I start off in the 1950s with a classic Kanigher-Kubert Viking Prince tale from Brave and the Bold #3 and then fast-foward to the 1980s for the 16-page Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld preview story "Duel in Dark Magic," which appeared in Legion of Superheroes #296. Finally, I tackle one of Neil Gaiman's classic Sandman comics, where he gets some help from Charles Vess on art and William Shakespeare himself in "A Midsummer Night's Dream" from Sandman #19. Plus ... listener emails! Comments and feedback are appreciated on the Pop Culture Affidavit Facebook page or by emailing me at popcultureaffidavit@gmail.com. Enjoy the show!

Hello DC Nationites, welcome back to the DC Nation Podcast, here on Across the Airwaves, and it looks like we've got a special penultimate episode for you guys tonight! First on this week's agenda, we try and help get through some Manhunters when we cover the Green Lantern: The Animated Series episode "Ranx"! We discuss the possibilities of seeing more than one Earth Green Lantern in the series finale, Razer's realization of what the team may have to do to defeat Aya, and give our other thoughts and predictions about the final episode. Then, after covering the Plastic Man and Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld shorts, we move onto covering the Young Justice: Invasion episode "Summit" where we freak out over Dan's crackpot theory for the series finale, cry at the "deaths" of Aqualad and Artemis, rejoice at the return of Wally West, and plead with DC Comics to give Young Justice (and Green Lantern as well) a "Smallville Season 11-like" comic series that will continue the series for us fans. We quickly end our episode (as the discussions got a little long) with covering Smallville Season 11's "Effigy, Part 4" where we witness the birth of Miss Martian into the Smallville Universe, which opens the way for Bryan Q. Miller to bring in a Smallville-version of the Young Justice Team! Also, Batman and Martian Manhunter. All this and more on this week's DC Nation Podcast! And don't forget to tune in tomorrow at 2/1c PM on our Ustream account to watch our DC Nation Live Show Event covering the series finales of Young Justice & Green Lantern, as well as giving our final goodbyes to the shows and sharing our experiences with the shows in the past. You can read Michael's "Mild-Mannered Review" of Smallville Season 11 "Effigy" - Part 4 on the Superman Homepage: HERE.
Hello loyal DC Nationites, and welcome back to ATA's very own "DC Nation Podcast"! On this episode of the DC Nation Podcast, Dan & Michael go deep into Green Lantern: The Animated Series with the episode "Blue Hope", discussing Aya's soul, and digging even deeper into Razer & Aya's "Love Connection", while still getting to the good stuff of the Green/Blue Lanterns fight against the super-charged Manhunters. But once the topic switches from "Cheers" to Young Justice: Invasion's "Cornered", it's like a "Glee" catastrophe waiting to happen! We realize that Nightwing was being a total jerk to the Team, that Godfrey is getting REAL old, that Captain Atom should NOT be the spokesperson for the Justice League, and that Superboy & Miss Martian really need to get back together. And when getting to the discussion on Smallville Season 11, "Haunted - Chapter 4", your Dynamic Duo discusses Smallville's version of the "Speed Force", the Black Flash, Chloe's need for an attitude adjustment, and "Haunted"'s connection to "Justice". And fear not, for we also give our thoughts on the amazing "Batman of Shanghai" and "Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld - Level 2" shorts!
