PR Not BS
Angela Roberts shares how important networking is in business

PR Not BS

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 4, 2026 23:26

Hosted by Fiona Scott, today's podcast welcomes Angela Roberts, who she met around fifteen years ago. Angela was running her own business, and they met at an ‘I am woman' networking group. Angela talks about how valuable networking is because you ‘make those contacts that nobody can ever take away from you.' Fifteen years later, Angela had a job in marketing for ‘Gensmile' a dental group and just after the lockdowns, she decided to help other businesses by starting her own networking group in Malmsbury at the Old Bell Hotel who've been very supportive over the years. Angela explains that Cotswold Networking is now full time for her.Fiona shared how she used to buy loads of scarves and jewellery from Angela back in the day and notes how even then, a lot of product-based businesses ‘don't and didn't bother' with networking, which she feels is a huge mistake. Angela says that everybody should be networking because it's not just about getting people to buy off you, it can help you build your business by finding social media managers, solicitors if you need them and finding others that can help you in your business. Fiona goes on to ask Angela, why, when setting up the Cirencester networking group, did she choose to have evening meetings? Angela explains that she had a day job, and she'd only ever been networking in the evening. She also explains that some businesses may be busy in the day, so it gives people the chance to be more sociable in the evening and she's now introducing the Witney group in the day, with a morning session to see how it goes. Fiona then asks Angela why she has steered away from other networking groups which include a single seat policy. When asked what her thinking was around that, Angela explains that she wanted variety. She thinks it's important that when choosing people for your business, you can pick someone who's the right fit for you etc. It could be that you need a solicitor for your business, but if you don't like the person then you won't work with them etc. This fits with Angela's belief that people buy from people. She also shares how important she feels collaboration is for business owners.Next, Fiona asks Angela how she made the final leap of faith to make networking her income rather than her full-time day job. Angela shares that she started opening more and more groups and it was taking up all of her time, and she had no work life balance. She says handing in her notice to her day job was the best decision she ever made. Fiona asks Angela about what groups are available and how people can find them. Angela says she covers Malmesbury, Cirencester, Cheltenham, Witney, Bristol, Corsham, Worcester and Bath.  She stresses that this isn't just a social event but it's a chance to network and get to know people. There is a process to the events whereby people swap tables and get to meet others with a minute timer each. Fiona asks Angela why some people may choose not to volunteer to speak at events. Angela says a lot of people haven't got the confidence and if they're new it can be quite daunting. She does stress however, that speaking is important to grow your network and business. Fiona asks Angela what her top three tips are for networking. Angela says turning up regularly, taking responsibility for their networking and following up with people after by connecting with them on LinkedIn and communicating afterwards.  Fiona asks Angela, ‘What is the wrong mindset to have when it comes to networking?'Angela says the people who don't make the effort at all and don't come often can make it difficult. Those who aren't able to put themselves out of their comfort zone and just sit in the corner quietly will really struggle. Angela also shares that people who leave quite early also miss great opportunities. Try to stay for the whole event if you can. Angela says a top tip for finding success is to make the continued effort and attend social events such as ‘curry club'. She shares that people are most likely to get out what they put in and that having the right mindset when it comes to networking is the most important thing. Angela says that there is also a chance for the members of her eight groups to attend and swap to different groups in order to widen their circle further. She encourages people to make the most of these chances. Once you become a member, you get a space on the website with your photo and bio etc. This is a valuable bit of marketing to take full advantage of. Fiona then asks Angela what she envisions for small businesses in 2027. Angela says there are a lot of challenges facing small businesses currently and that now is the time to get out there. ‘Don't sit in your office struggling on your own, take the chance to get out there because there are so many people who can help you.' She finished by saying that there is a lot of support out there and new friendships to be made.Fiona then asks how much it costs to be a member. Angela says you can come twice as a visitor before being asked about becoming a member. There is a cost to being a member, unless you know a member and they can invite you for free. Once you become a member it's £40 + VAT a month. That gives you one membership group a month and then all the other benefits mentioned above. If you want to have more than one group it is £70 + VAT. Fiona then asks Angela what else she'd like to share. Angela says her next plan is to get others in to help run the groups for her because she's so busy. Angela says she has found Natalie who runs Forever Living to run the Worcester group, but she is still looking for others too. You can find Angela via her website or her email which is info@cotswoldnetworking.co.ukTo get in touch with Fiona and the Scott Media team, visit www.scottmedia.uk.Join our free Facebook group at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/prtribe

What happens when the thing you think will finally make you lovable, the right look, the right body, the right approval, never actually arrives? In this episode, Eileen has a conversation with Whitney Walker, licensed marriage and family therapist, recovery coach, and host of the Women Waken podcast. Whitney specializes in addiction, eating disorders, trauma, and spirituality, and she doesn't shy away from her own story: severe bullying, a debilitating eating disorder, addiction, and a self-worth built entirely on external validation that nearly broke her in her early twenties. This conversation traces Whitney's path from that rock bottom to recovery, sobriety, and a spiritual awakening rooted in self-love, and widens out into a larger conversation about the return of the divine feminine, sovereignty, and what a more conscious, balanced society could look like.In this episode:-Whitney's years of disordered eating, addiction, and the belief that being attractive was the only path to being loved-The therapist who first asked her, "Isn't there more to you than your appearance?"-The book and quote that cracked something open: "Trying to love yourself from the outside in is a doomed prospect"-Why getting sober and healing her relationship with food opened the door to a spiritual path-A trip to the UK that connected Whitney to her Scottish, English, and Irish ancestry, and the calling that followed: bring women together-The difference between conscious and unconscious masculine and feminine energy-Sovereignty as the most powerful tool available to any human right now-Why systems built on greed and exploitation are inherently unstable, and what might take their place-The role of truth and transparency in personal and collective healing"The greatest wisdom you can ever find is within you. You are your own greatest source of wisdom." — Whitney WalkerWhitney's Website: Www.Womenwaken.com Find Witney's Podcast on Apple or Spotify Subscribe to Witney's Youtube channelConnect with Witney on Instagram Follow Whitney on Facebook Join Whitney on LinkedInJoin me for the next Wheel of the Year CeremonySubscribe to Eileen on SubstackTake the Which Witch Are You QuizOrder Awaken to the Magic Within Connect with Eileen on Instagram Follow Eileen on Insight Timer Send Eileen an email

What if the music you've been dancing to your whole life has actually been regulating your nervous system? In this episode, we sit down with Hollie May, a UK-based drum and bass DJ, promoter, mentor, radio presenter, and founder of The Inner Ground - to explore the fascinating intersection of bass frequencies, brain science, and human connection. Hollie brings a rare combination of lived experience and practical wisdom to the conversation. She shares her journey from growing up as a self-described misfit in Witney, Oxford, finding refuge in the free party scene, to teaching herself to DJ on a pair of Vestax decks and building a career that now spans music, youth mentorship, and mental health advocacy. Along the way, she unpacks why drum and bass is so uniquely powerful for neurodivergent brains - the predictable patterns, the sub-bass frequencies stimulating the vagus nerve, and the way the music quite literally matches the natural rhythm of certain minds. As Hollie puts it, "The drums - it's one of the oldest human technologies really. And I believe this is almost like a modern-day version of collective effervescence, which is essentially feeling like you're one." The conversation covers a lot of ground - you'll hear Hollie's take on imposter syndrome (she calls hers "John" - the safety police who takes everything too seriously), her practical toolkit for performing late nights sustainably without burning out, and her honest thoughts on the gender imbalance in music lineups that seemed to be improving post-COVID but has since slipped back. She also gets into shadow work and the idea that music gives us a sanctioned space to express the parts of ourselves we're usually told to hide - as she says: "Express or repress, you choose". Hollie is refreshingly direct about the volatility of a music career, the lack of any wellbeing infrastructure in underground music, and why diversifying your income isn't giving up - it's being smart. She also shares how listeners can actually support artists in meaningful ways beyond just streaming (hint: Bandcamp, encouraging messages, and just showing up matter more than you think). Whether you're a DJ, a yoga teacher, a mental health professional, or just someone who's ever felt something shift in your chest when a bassline drops, this episode will give you a new language for what music actually does to us - and why that matters more than ever. Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"The original source sound for this piece was from a bat echolocation detection device. So in this sonic interpretation, I aimed to create the feeling of reaching out into a mysterious, dark space of unknown size or location.  "The timbre is meant to be muffled and imprecise while the musical material is deliberate and approaching Baroque. I also bounced the original source sound between various audio and music composition softwares, relaying the message and having it change along the way–similar to a game of telephone. The rhythmic patterns were all taken for the rhythmic patterns of the sonified echolocation." Bat detector in Witney, England reimagined by Janae Jean.

Episode 242 is about putting ploughs into the ground, how the rural areas of much of the country was experiencing something of an agricultural revolution. It's rather a fascinating tale, because there are tremendous contradictions in what we're going to talk about this episode. As usual, there we will need to combine a global story with our local story —without doing so would be to stunt our awareness of the strands and tendrils that spread and connect. By the 1850s, Great Britain was manipulating trade and military as well as political power as reciprocating elements. This is a technique adopted by pretty much every empire since before Carthage. Political influence was used so as to extend and secure free exchange, in Britain's case commerce and anglicisation, spread political influence and welded alliances. As Lord Palmerston so aptly pointed out “…It is the business of Government to open and secure the roads for the Merchant…” Antiquated regimes were its enemy and foreign tariffs were its enemy, as anyone knows, the greatest enemy of free trade are tariffs. Empires were broken, the gouty and outdated Chinese, the religion-strangled Turkey, innumerable sheikdoms, sultanates and chieftancies were drawn into the invisible British empire of informal sway. When merchants manage affairs instead of men with guns, it's harder to pin down the essence of power — and also the dangers. The results of this grand vision were not encouraging by the 1870s and the Victorians were less sure of their panacea for both Asia and Africa. Among the ancient and invincibly conservative Confucian and Islamic rulers, no effective westernising collaborators had been found. The Tai'ping rebellion in China and the growing chaos in Muslim states appeared never ending. It was the United States that was gobbling up immigrants — most of Britain's emigrants went there, and the Victorians bought and sold more there than in any other single country. It had dawned on the British political elite that their commerical experience impressed a single portentous fact — that their most successful trading associations with the exception of the Indian Empire, were with Europeans transplanted abroad. They accounted for around 70 percent of all her investment overseas. The white communities in the temperate zones had the outlook and the institutions favourable to progress which the Asiatics and Africans seemed to lack. They offered customers with European tastes and money to spend. Mutual self-interest with whites of their empire meant private business of Great Britain commingled freely with that of Greater Britain and the once-colonial societies of the New World — the Americans and many in South America too. At the same time, the colonists were growing more bitter about Downing Street control and self-government appeared one solution. The aim was to avert the loss of more colonies and more American Wars of independence. So by the 1870s, confederated Canada, responsibly governed Australia and the Cape were regarded as constitutional embodiments of collaboration between British and colonial interests — all working at their best. The number of trading stores in the Transkei quadrupled to a few hundred, and all of this meant that there was a major qualitative shift in the cumsumption patterns of Africans. New permanent wants replaced needs, metal was now preferred to traditionally crafted pots and baskets, the cow-hide kaross was replaced by the Witney blanket, ploughs and all manner of tools flooded into these developing farms. Around South Africa, energy seemed to be surging. Take the highveld for example. The sour veld of the Harrismith district to be precise. Largely used for summer grazing, the farmers here often moved their herds into Natal every autumn. Below the Berg as they put, OnderBerg. Underberg.

Send us a textNick talks to Lowdown regular, author and Guardian columnist Rafael Behr about what Labour does now in government after 14 years in opposition on the sidelines of terrible Tory governments delivering austerity, brexit, a bungled pandemic response, five failed prime ministers, economic decline and collapsing councils and public services. Will the UK inherited from the Tories prove to be a poisoned chalice for PM Sir Keir Starmer and co or can Labour rescue and rejuvenate a country battered by years of Tory misrule?Rafael concludes Labour may have the policies and the right people to carry them out but wonders whether Sir Keir and his chancellor Rachel Reeves have the political vim to sell their vision and plans to the electorate. Already, the BBC has declared Labour's blink-and-you'd've-missed-it political honeymoon to be "over."Rafael @rafaelbehr concedes Labour has its work cut out - as latest opinion polls suggest - and a rocky passage lies ahead. But the Conservatives have not even begun to examine the reasons for their crushing defeat in July. Most media attention has been focussed on the split on the Tories' far right, and with Nigel Farages latest vehicle, Reform, while steadfastly ignoring the hemorrhaging of one-time rock solid Conservative seats to the Liberal Democrats, including the Witney and Maidenhead constituencies of former prime ministers  Lord Cameron and Theresa May. Rafael contends that the famous "Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells" - which the Tories also lost to the Lib Dems - remain particularly disgusted by brexit and its abject and predictable failure. Rafael's recent book Politics: A Survivor's Guide: How to stay engaged without getting enraged is published by W.F.Howes Ltd and available at Amazon and in all good bookshops.Support the showListen to The Lowdown from Nick Cohen for in-depth analysis of the issues and events that shape our lives and futures.
