How important is Clea as a tone-setter for this team, and did you always intend for her to have this much presence, or did she just start taking over scenes once you started writing her?In issue #6 you've still got Carnage on the board, even though Eddie Brock: Carnage is wrapping up soon. You told me before you basically had to negotiate for every character. How are you keeping Carnage meaningfully involved long-term — not just as shock value, but as an actual team member — without breaking what Charles Soule did with him in his own corner?By issue #6, it feels like New Avengers is fully embracing chaos — you've got Bucky trying to lead a team of killers, liars, and literal monsters, while the line between heroism and survival keeps getting blurrier. How much of this book is about what it really means to be an Avenger when the ideals that title stands for just don't work anymore? We see Iron Apex actively working to bust out more members of the Kiluminati — Lord Britain and Rapunzel — while the team is still trying to figure out how to survive Evil Doctor Strange. How big is the Kiluminati conspiracy compared to what we've seen so far? Are we still at the “first wave,” or are you already building toward something closer to a war between their dark Illuminati and Bucky's crew?Guru Strange in issue #6 is… a lot. He's powerful, unhinged, and kind of grossly horny in a way that makes him instantly memorable. How did you find the voice for these twisted “duplicates”? Are you treating each Kiluminati member like a dark-mirror riff, or are you building them as full-on new villains with their own agendas beyond “evil version of X”?You've already said you wanted these New Avengers to feel like a Fast & Furious family — volatile, high-powered, kind of toxic, but ride-or-die when it counts. At this point in the story, do you see them actually becoming a “family,” or are they only ever going to be a barely-controlled disaster pointed at bigger disasters? The book's really leaning into sex and intimacy — especially with Black Widow and Winter Soldier in issue #6 — but it doesn't feel like empty heat. It feels messy and fragile and dangerous. Is Bucky/Nat the emotional core of this book going forward, and how hard are you planning to break them to test that core?Sensitivity coordinatorYou've talked about how continuity on this book is basically “Marvel Universe on steroids,” with characters being borrowed from multiple offices. Now that you're this deep — Hulk, Carnage, Clea, Bucky, etc. — what's the biggest creative win from that shared custody? Has any other office (or creator) dropped something in your lap that made you go, “Oh, that just unlocked the next arc”?Leadership in New Avengers feels like a losing battle — what would Cap say about Bucky's job so far as team leader?Extremely serious journalism question to close: If the New Avengers and the Kiluminati had to compete on a Bravo-style dating show where everyone is forced to live in one mansion and hook up or strategize, who (A) immediately starts sleeping with the enemy, (B) is secretly there just to stab someone, and (C) wins the whole thing without anyone realizing they were playing?

Jace and Rocky are back for another Comic Boom / Comic Source DC Spotlight, digging into 11 titles for the week of December 3rd, 2025 as the holidays ramp up and Jace teases his upcoming YouTube gift guides and "fireside chat" creator series before diving into eleven new DC titles that make up a solid if not spectacular week, with standout entries like Absolute Green Lantern, Batman, Poison Ivy, JSA, Gotham Academy, and the finale of Cheetah and Cheshire Rob the Justice League earning praise for strong pacing, character work, and the always-stellar art of Nicholas Scott. After noting how surprisingly close their rankings are this week, the conversation shifts into the DC KO tie-ins, beginning with a sharp dismissal of Batman: Night Fight #2 as a predictable, creatively hollow retread that squanders Dan Mora's brilliant art on yet another tired "Batman vs. the Bat-Family" setup with inconsistent tournament mechanics and no real stakes. By contrast, DC KO: Superman vs. Captain Atom #1 sparks a more nuanced discussion, as Rocky reassesses his assumptions about the moral framework of the tournament while both hosts admire Sean Isaacs' energetic visuals and the multiversal iterations on display, even as Jace expresses frustration at seeing Captain Atom once again portrayed as easily corrupted instead of realizing the potential shown in his strongest past interpretations. They dig into the murky logic of the fight's resolution, the ongoing characterization challenges for Captain Atom, and the broader editorial realities guiding DC KO, before wrapping up with a quick rundown of this week's facsimiles and collections—including classic Golden Age Superman material, the DC manga box set, Hitman by Ennis and McCrea, and the Judas Contract deluxe edition—and closing out with holiday well-wishes as Absolute Green Lantern, Poison Ivy, and Cheetah & Cheshire anchor the top of their weekly rankings.

This week, Josh has willed more McFarlane DC figures into existence! (It's been like 2 years now without an error???) (02:14:30) #BatmanSupermanWorldsFinest 31 Plus our Honorable Mentions covered each week by Josh! Here's the run down – Jenny Sparks #2 - I can't say anything else about this book except I hate it. Like, with a passion. And that's because King turned Captain Atom into an arrogant evil wannabe Dr Manhattan, quite literally he just wants to be a god… this is beyond stupid. Can barely even consider the art. King shits ALL OVER the characters he writes. He sucks and he knows it and great art can't save it. Nothing redeemable. 3/10. John Constantine, Hellblazer: Dead in America #9 - This is the grimiest magic-based noir that I've ever read and it's absolutely great. A while lot goes sideways, and Constantine is getting a bit closer… and… the art fits the book so well. And also? This is weird, but Arron Campbell drew a dress on Clarice that may be the prettiest piece of clothing that I have ever seen on a comic book character. 8.25/10 Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter #3 - I didn't expect to go into this liking it more than the original. I'm not there quite yet, but I am getting damn close. And the occasional explosive use of color in this book makes it all even more gorgeous. 8/10 Batman - The Long Halloween - The Last Halloween #1 - Catwoman, Gilda, Two-Face. Calendar Man, Jim Gordon, Batman and Robin all pick up where the last installment left off. This was a really fun read for me. I thought it odd at first that the Long Halloween was being expanded upon, but now? Give me the next 9 issues. 7.75/10 Multiversus - Collision Detection #1 - The only thing that I knew to expect from this one is that it's a video game tie-in. What I didn't expect was it to be so fun for my 8-year-old to read. He loved it and gives it a 4/5 (he won't judge on 1-10 no matter how many times I ask). Joker The World - With an all star cast of writers, artists, colorists, and letterers, going in, you have to know that at least some of this has got to be good, right? Well, it's a whole bunch of non-connected Joker stories. Some art is great. Some is fantastic, some I'm not a fan of but it fits the story so very well. I don't quite understand it, normally, I wouldn't like this kind of thing. But Joker The World was really good. And there's a Joker the World Free Batman Day Special Edition that might still be at your Local Comic Shop if you'd like a preview to all of them. For the book? It gets 7.5/10 Batman Day 2024: Batman / Elmer Fudd Special #1 - This was a way better story than it deserved to be. Way better. I really enjoyed it. We didn't need the backup at all in this book, but it wasa fun quick read as well. I am very pleasantly surprised. 8/10 Batman - Elmer Fudd Special Noir Edition #1 - See above, but in black and white. There's also a whole bunch of facsimile editions - Crisis on infinite earths, Detective 27, variants and foils, etc. so go check those out as well. #DCAllIn #ComicsAreForEveryone #ComicsAreGreat #MakeComicsGreatAgain #AbsolutePower #DCComics #comics #comicbooks #GeekMatrix #TheGeekMatrix #TGM #GeekMatrixPod --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thegeekmatrixcomics/support

Jace chats with creators J.T. Krul and Freddie Williams II about their run on Captain Atom for The New 52. Starting with an interesting prompt for DC comics on how to approach the character, J.T. and Freddie gave us an incredible foundation for the character that is criminally underrated. Also the guys chat about the creative process and collaboration that was a new way of doing things for both of them and it led to the singular vision for the character that we have in this run. We actually have not seen a lot of Captain Atom since this run and it is hugely disappointing that this take on the character wasn't built upon more. Get some behind the scenes information on how the story was built and some ideas that didn't make it into the back as we look back on one of the best titles from The New 52, that no one talks about.
