A body has been found amid a search for a man missing from Canterbury. There was a large emergency service response in the Fordwich area ahead of the discovery yesterday afternoon. Also in today's podcast, the closure of a bridge for repairs is causing major headaches for the thousands of motorists who rely on it each week. But there may be worse to come for those who regularly use the 600-year-old bridge near Maidstone. A university professor has branded campus bosses “ridiculous” after they banned him from bringing his emotional support dog to work. For almost two years, the trusty German shepherd, Wolf, has been by his side during lectures at the University of Kent in Canterbury but that's all come to an end. It's feared the cost of living could be putting people off adopting a child in Kent.A campaign's underway as data shows a 22 percent rise in the number of youngsters who haven't been matched with a family – in today's podcast you can hear from a man who adopted siblings who are now teenagers. And it's finally been revealed who the subject of this year's effigy at Edenbridge Bonfire will be. The 11-metre tall creation will be set alight this weekend alongside the traditional Guy – and this year they've gone for something a little bit different.
Bonus Content! In Episode 165 we took a stroll by the Green River with Creedence Clearwater Revival. Now we're back to dive into their THIRD album from 1969 (and fourth overall), Willy And The Poor Boys! James struggled to choose between the two but is standing by Green River... Will this very similar record with a scrapped concept win us over? How do hits like Down On The Corner and the juggernaut Fortunate Son stack up to what we've already heard? Connor's done some math and presents a convincing case to support his hypothesis. Will we burn an Effigy for Green River or will we leave Feelin' Blue? Jack and Marc decipher unearthed scrolls to reveal the first detective of Ancient Egypt Foot Laurentian. Surprisingly, the scrolls were packed with jokes. Coming off this hard work, they return from a well deserved vacation in Northern Manitoba. It's action packed, and they come back with new friends - Big Barnaby Wet Legs (aka Slosh Legs Fuck Head), his old girlfriend Effigy, and his new girlfriend, Big Ethel Moosehead Monsoon (aka Big Ether Shit Storm). Returning to ancient Egypt, we hear the story of the other Christ - and the lesser known resurrection. Coming to North America, we hear the real story of the American South and yet another religion, the Cavalry Calvinist Religion, their Three Commandments and their Winnebago. We hear about Ruby Faced Little Man and Hickory Sticks Burness (whose legs were replaced with the hickory spokes from a wagon wheel after a piranha accident. Jack and Marc discuss their job moving things for the Hydro Carbon Mafia Family, how to get funding for science, and the demise of the Neanderthals because of a lack of knowledge of economics.

In the final chapter of CONTRA VII, Dimitri and Khalid explore how Creedence Clearwater Revival went from the #1 chooglin' rock band in the world in 1970 to having their entire fortune stolen by Burt Kanter's notoriously shady, mafia and CIA-infested Castle Bank and Trust. SIDE A: THE ASSASSINATION OF CCR BY THE COWARD BURTON KANTER How CCR's Woodstock headlining set got sabotaged by the Grateful Dead, the silk topper inspiration for “Fortunate Son”, not getting respect from the “cool” rock media, providing material support to the American Indian occupation of Alcatraz, renegotiating their contract with Fantasy Records bigwig Saul Zaentz, Saul convincing CCR to put all their earnings offshore in Castle Bank and a grapevine of shell entities, Tom Fogerty's painful departure in '71, John's revenge on Negative Stu and No-Shuffle Doug with “Mardi Gras” in '72, the end of CCR, Tom's underrated solo career/chooglin' with suslord Jerry Garcia, Tom subtweeting John on “Sign of the Devil”, John's stint with David Geffen and the scrapped lo-fi “Hoodoo” album, realizing that ALL of Creedence's money has vanished into a “Bahamian abyss”, years of seclusion and lawsuits, getting even with Burt Kanter, Zaentz's new role as serrrious Hollywood producer of “One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest” and “Amadeus”, John realizing he's Zaentz's Pinocchio puppet, his 1985 return with “Zanz Kant Danz” and “Mr. Greed”, Tom's new “best friend” Saul Zaentz, more lawsuits and fighting, Tom's tragic death from AIDS in 1990, his dying wish that the other three Creedence guys choogle together one last time, and John's NOT-on-haqq refusal to play with Stu, Doug, and Tom's son Jeff at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction in 1993. SIDE B: EFFIGY Donald Trump's purchase of Resorts International in 1987, cocaine trafficking in 1980s Bahamas, Medellin Cocaine Nazi Carlos “Joe” Lehder making Norman's Cay his castle and garden, US Ambassador to the Bahamas/Slava Ukraini Banderite/WACL suslord Lev Dobriansky telling the CIA station chief to “find another job”, Kanter's relationships with international oil man Bruce Rappaport and Bill Casey, Indonesian oil schemes in the 1960s, the Bank of New York, the ill-fated Aqaba oil pipeline project in Iraq, looting the Soviet economy, Antigua as training ground for Contras, IDF machine guns for Colombian drug cartels, BCCI/Rappaport overlaps, “left-leaning wealth advisor” Josh Kanter's Alliance for a Better Utah and Kanter Family Foundation, Linda Pritzker aka Lama Tsomo's Namchak Foundation in Montana, Nick Pritzker bankrolling Gavin Newsom's career, Tom Pritzker running the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Nick and Tom Pritzker's multiple phone numbers in Epstein's black book, Virginia Roberts Giuffre's allegations against Tom Pritzker, the Kanter law firm of Neal, Gerber, & Eisenberg's continuing services to the Pritzker family, and last but not least, some thoughts on how it doesn't whip ass when left-leaning media influencers try to meme Big Boy JB Pritzker into the White House, especially when one's uncle happens to have been a Burt Kanter protegé/Pritzker family attorney for the last 50 years.
My guest on this episode is Alissa York. Alissa is the author of the novels Mercy, Effigy (which was shortlisted for the Giller Prize), Fauna and The Naturalist (which was winner of the Canadian Author's Association Fiction Award, and the short fiction collection, Any Given Power. Alissa's essays and articles have appeared in The Guardian, The Globe and Mail, Brick magazine and elsewhere, and she teaches at Humber College, where she is the coordinator for the Creative Writing program. Full disclosure, we used to have offices right across the hall from each other at Humber. Alissa's most recent book is Far Cry, which was published by TK in 2023 by Random House Canada. The Toronto Star said Far Cry is “dazzling and brilliant” and called it “a transfixing, glorious novel.” Alissa and I talk about the Humber Creative Writing program, how she makes herself disconnect from social media, and most other social things, when she is working on a book, and where she begins when she is starting a new novel. Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! Today, we're diving into the eerie, enigmatic, and utterly unforgettable world of The Wicker Man (1973). Directed by Robin Hardy, this British folk horror film has become a cult classic, celebrated for its atmospheric tension, haunting soundtrack, and a storyline that lingers long after the credits roll. The Wicker Man transports us to the remote island of Summerisle, where Police Sergeant Neil Howie (played by Edward Woodward) arrives to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. What he discovers is a community steeped in pagan rituals and traditions, starkly contrasting with his devout Christian beliefs.Howie's investigation unravels in a community that at first seems idyllic and welcoming, but harbors dark secrets beneath its surface. The islanders, led by the charismatic Lord Summerisle (a role immortalized by Christopher Lee), engage in practices that bewilder and horrify the devout sergeant, leading him on a path that culminates in one of cinema's most shocking finales. The Wicker Man is more than a horror film; it's a piece of cinematic art that questions, provokes, and mesmerizes. Its influence can be seen in numerous films and TV shows that followed, making it essential viewing for fans of the genre and cinephiles alike. So, whether you're a long-time fan or new to the haunting tale of Sergeant Howie and the island of Summerisle, join us as we explore the legacy, the lore, and the lasting impact of "The Wicker Man."

Welcome to Scatterbrain Podcast Episode 152: Plastic (It's Everywhere)! This week, we do another album swap. Ian listens to Suffocation's "Effigy of the Forgotten" (Dan's suggestion) and Dan listens to Sabbat's "History of a Time to Come" (Ian's suggestion). These albums are some of our favorites - We do these album swaps to break out of our normal listening habits and encourage each other to listen to something we may have missed or may not have given a chance in the past. How do they hold up after all of these years? Then, we talk about plastic. It's everywhere! We learn about the discovery and manufacture of plastic, its many benefits, and the pitfalls of its widespread use. You don't have to look far to see the environmental impacts of the production and improper disposal of plastic, and the scale of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is almost beyond comprehension. What can be done about this? Are we past the point of no return? Thanks for listening each week - don't forget to like/rate/review and share with your network. This week we will start breaking down the different ways Jesus reveals Himself to us, starting with Him as the Truth!

Two things are true of history podcasts: Everyone loves a bit of Tudor History, and everyone loves a good ghost story. Today, we explore a bit of both! When visiting Henry VIII's magnificent Hampton Court Palace, it's often the darker episodes from its past that get the best reactions. Using Tudor portraiture as our guide, let's explore the origin of some of the Palace's ghostly tales and the lives at the center of them. Today's images: Jane Seymour (unfinished), after Hans Holbein the Younger (1537). Oil on panel. National Portrait Gallery, London. Jane Seymour, by Hans Holbein the Younger (1536/37). Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. Portrait of a Lady, perhaps Katherine Howard, by Hans Holbein the Younger. (ca. 1540). Watercolor on vellum laid on playing card (the 4 of Diamonds). Royal Collection Trust. Effigy of Dame Sybil Penn, from Hampton Church British School, The Family of Henry VIII (c.1545). Oil on canvas.
This week we look at the Slavic death goddess known as Marzanna, or Morana. Her mythology is seasonal, associating her with winter hags, though the myth associated with her is one of betrayal. In Poland and some other parts of Eastern Europe, the ritual of drowning or burning a Marzana effigy at the Spring Equinox is still observed. We discuss some possible meanings and connections of her stories and festivals with the mysteries of the Dark Feminine and the underworld. For a more personal view of the Marzanna ritual, check out the Chthonia Baba Yaga podcast featuring Joanna Madloch from a couple of years ago. There is also a forthcoming Chthonia Conversation with Joanna on Slavic mythology and the Dark Feminine, so don't miss it!
Steve Pilgrim - drummer, singer & songwriter joins me on this episode of the podcast. Another huge talent from the Paul Weller band. Paul is quoted as saying on Steve: "One of the great understated modern songsmiths. I love Pilgrims voice, his lyrics, his sense of melody. I hope people get to hear his music, it's really something special” Ex-The Stands, Cast, John Power and John Head, Steve joined the Paul Weller band in 2008 for the 22 Dreams tour ( following on from drumming legends Steve White and Rick Buckler when you think about it! - something that we discuss on the podcast). Steve has been a key fixture of the band ever since. Both live behind the kit - touring the world multiple times - and on record from Wake Up The Nation through to Fat Pop. As Andy Lewis said on the podcast, "Steve is a better singer-songwriter than he is a drummer, and he's a fantastic drummer..." Our podcast begins with a text from Paul Weller that was the only inspiration Steve Pilgrim needed to finish the writing of his much-anticipated sixth album ‘Beautiful Blue'... This episode examines the extraordinary tomb of Lorenzo de' Medici in the New Sacristy. The allegorical figures of "Dawn" and "Dusk" are two of Michelangelo's most elegant statues, while the "Effigy of Lorenzo de' Medici" is a clear allusion to the Classical "thinker" pose. We also analyze how the sculptural groups interact with the general architectural program of the room.
This episode examines the extraordinary tomb of Giuliano de' Medici in the New Sacristy. The allegorical figures of "Day" and "Night" are two of Michelangelo's most beautiful statues, while the "Effigy of Giuliano de' Medici" is a revolution in funerary statuary.
This episode is special because all three of us have personal experience -- in Santa Fe, the Black Rock Desert, or Lewes, England -- watching giant effigies burn down in a symbolic cleansing ritual reputed to have dark, murderous roots. Yet this ubiquitous form of expression is also clever, satirical, and a way to showcase public art and bring a community together. From Wicker Man to Zozobra, what kind of strangeness have humans conjured up, only to burn down?
When dynamite is aged the wrong way it gets sweaty with little crystals that can cause spontaneous explosions.Dave X. Man of fire, bacon, and “the ponytail of approachability.” An enigmatic shaman of fireworks, flame effects, and deep thoughts, his stripper name is Sweaty Dynamite. His spiritual calling is to bring joyful, fiery experiences to the masses. His secret weapon: a thick binder. Huh? More on that later. Could one man be a hippie and a redneck, and in charge of Fire Art Safety in Black Rock City, and also fill the role of Cake Marshal for Burning Man Project? Yes, yes he could. A pyrotechnician, a peaceful perturber, and a Burner from days of yore, he bestows his teachings upon Stuart Mangrum. Pro tip: Each of our episodes ends with a bang, especially this one. National Parks, as most places do, have rules. And for good reason. It is expected as visitors that we abide by them, and it is also expected that Park Rangers not only uphold them themselves, but enforce them. But what happens when they don't? What happens when those whose objective is to preserve, protect and enhance - turn their back on those very commitments? Today we venture to Iowa, to Effigy Mounds National Monument – a place rich with cultural history. This monument is famous for its hundreds of burial mounds and notorious for a scandal that disrupted those who were laid to rest within them. We love our National Parks and we know you do too but when you're out there, remember to enjoy the view but watch your back.
