Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been without a chief of staff for more than a week. His former right-hand man, Andriy Yermak, resigned on November 28, hours after anti-corruption agents raided his apartment in Kyiv. The investigators were looking into a $100-million kickback scheme in Ukraine's energy sector that has already cost several high-level officials their posts. The timing of the biggest political scandal of Zelensky's presidency couldn't have been worse: news of the scheme broke just as the Trump administration pushed ahead with another round of talks to end Russia's war against Ukraine. Among his many other roles, Yermak was Ukraine's lead peace negotiator. To put this enormous shake-up into context, Meduza senior news editor Sam Breazeale spoke to journalist Simon Shuster. A Ukraine expert and staff writer at The Atlantic, Shuster interviewed Yermak the day before his resignation. He also enjoyed extensive access to Zelensky and his circle while writing his 2024 biography The Showman: Inside the Invasion That Shook the World and Made a Leader of Volodymyr Zelensky. Originally published in English, The Showman is now also available in Russian from Meduza's own publishing house. Old-Time Radio Essentials returns with episode 51, and as we continue Season 5, we present Patte's pick, an example of the Canadian comedy duo Wayne & Shuster, in which they present their famous routine, "Rinse the Blood Off My Toga" -- a sort of Julius-Caesar-meets-Mickey-Spillane. Come for the old-time radio, stay for the scintillating (that's one way of putting it) discussion afterwards! As you listen, perhaps you'll learn if we feel this entry meets the following criteria: 1. Is it truly representative of that series? (Can anyone point to it and say, "Yes, that is what [NAME OF SERIES] was all about.") 2. Is it an episode worthy of inclusion in any and every OTR aficionado's private collection? So with this in mind, we three bring you, as our fifty-first number (but 2nd official episode of S5), this episode of Wayne & Shuster, from 2-4-54. We'll introduce the show, play it in its entirety, then discuss it at length. Thanks for joining us, and we hope you enjoy it! Please show your support of the podcast by doing any of the following... The Drunken Odyssey with John King: A Podcast About the Writing Life
On this week's show, Jeff Shuster and John King delve into an existentially strange antihero story that feels a bit crazy and not entirely complete.

The Drunken Odyssey with John King: A Podcast About the Writing Life
In October, The Drunken Odyssey crams Literature aside to consider wild, dark fun cinema with our curator of Schlock, Jeff Shuster! This year, John and Jeff discuss 4 black-and-white films from the 1960s. First up is this chili pepper of a film that arose the year before the Summer of Love.
North Star is on vacation this week, so we're rerunning some of our favourite episodes. This one originally aired May 4th, 2023 Canadians of a certain age will remember listening to the comedy duo of Wayne and Shuster on the radio—and, later, watching them on television from the 1950s well into the 1980s. The duo met in high school in Toronto's prewar Jewish neighbourhood around Harbord Collegiate, where they began writing and performing sketch comedy. After returning from entertaining the troops overseas during the Second World War, they joined the television era, with specials pulling in audiences of millions and worldwide syndication. Since their fathers' deaths, Wayne and Shuster's children have been campaigning to convince the CBC—which owns the broadcast rights to much of their parents' material—to air it for the first time in years for a new generation of Canadians to enjoy. These efforts have not been successful, so the families are taking a new strategy. They teamed up with Bygone Theatre, a theatre company in Toronto, to mount a live Wayne and Shuster stage show that opened at the University of Toronto's Hart House Theatre in May 25, 2023. It went on a national tour, too. Audiences got to see high-profile Canadian actors perform such classic W and S skits as “Rinse the Blood Off My Toga” and “A Shakespearean Baseball Game”. Michael and Brian Wayne joined The CJN Daily, along with Rosie Shuster and the producers of the play, Emily Dix and Conor Fitzgerald. **What we talked about ** When the City of Toronto named a lane after Wayne and Shuster, in The CJN For Canada's 150th anniversary in 2017, The CJN ran this profile of Wayne and Shuster Watch “Rinse the Blood off my Toga” on YouTube Credits Host and writer: Ellin Bessner (@ebessner) Production team: Zachary Kauffman (senior producer), Andrea Varsany (producer), Michael Fraiman (executive producer) Original Music: Dov Beck-Levine Current Music: Bret Higgins Support our show Subscribe to The CJN newsletter Donate to The CJN (+ get a charitable tax receipt) Subscribe to North Star (Not sure how? We deal with intonation that includes plane coming into land, shopping list, upspeak and de-voicing with vocal fry to learn how to nail this trend we hear more and more.It sparks quite a discussion - but love it or loathe it - we ask the question, could it be useful for your voiceover career?Get involved! Send it to us via Mark or Sam's social media or email it directly to podcast@britishvoiceover.co.ukScript 1How many fairy tales do you recognise here? And why do they all seem to take place in the Middle Ages? Figures like Puss in Boots and Humpty Dumpty are not just recognisable, they are reused and reimagined in contemporary films like Shrek. Look for other familiar characters: Little Red Riding Hood conversing with a wolf, Robin Hood crossing a river, Jack and the beanstalk, and Old Mother Goose soaring in the skies—these and others continue to shape our collective imagination.Script 2I've been doing therapy on and off for about a decade now and I must say it can be very hard finding a therapist that you click with, let alone someone with an open schedule in general. Whether it's dealing with that initial search, location, or connecting with a therapist, doing all of that work only to find out that you don't vibe with that person can be incredibly discouraging. Here is a table of contents summarizing the weather podcast, focusing on extreme weather events and conditions globally, with a special emphasis on heatwaves and high dew points, and ending with the songs that played in the background. Chapter 1: Introduction and Extreme Heat in the Persian Gulf (00:08) The podcast begins by highlighting extreme weather conditions, particularly the phenomenal dew points and wet bulb temperatures in the Persian Gulf, where dew points reach the upper 80s and wet bulb temperatures are expected to hit 90 degrees, potentially reaching the upper limits of human tolerance. Temperatures in Iran's Great Salt Desert are forecasted to soar, with surface temperatures possibly exceeding the official record due to a lack of weather stations. Shuster, Iran, is mentioned as a city where temperatures frequently reach the 130s, although official records may not reflect this due to the distance of the nearest weather station. Chapter 2: Heat Dome in the US and High Dew Points (03:19) The discussion shifts to a strengthening heat dome in the US Midwest and East Coast, with forecasts indicating it will intensify over the next two weeks. High dew points are noted not only in the Persian Gulf but also in the United States, especially around the Gulf of Mexico and the Midwest corn belt, creating swamp-like conditions. The air originates from the Gulf of Mexico, traveling over a thousand miles, and the corn belt enhances the humidity levels. Chapter 3: Extreme Heat in Dubai and the Caspian Sea (04:28) The podcast revisits the United Arab Emirates, focusing on Dubai, where temperatures remain consistently in the mid-90s, driven by high dew points leading to heat indices approaching 130. The conversation then turns to the Caspian Sea in Russia, where unusually high ocean water temperatures, similar to those in the Gulf of Mexico, lead to very humid conditions. The possibility of weather phenomena similar to Tornado Alley in the US occurring near the Caspian Sea is speculated due to the presence of both humid and dry air masses. Chapter 4: Global Weather Observations and the Lack of Hurricanes in July (08:43) The podcast notes intense warmth in the Arctic regions of northern Canada and Alaska, with temperatures expected to reach the 80s. Intense heat is also observed on the West Coast of the US, particularly on the eastern side of the Cascades. The lack of hurricanes in July, despite warm ocean temperatures, is attributed to the plume of Sahara dust that interferes with hurricane development. Chapter 5: Heat Advisories and Closing Remarks (10:54) Heat advisories are in effect across the northern states of the Midwest, with a large area of excessive heat warnings covering much of the Midwest and South Central states. The heat dome is expected to center over the mid-Atlantic area later in the week, bringing super hot weather. The podcast concludes with encouragement to stay healthy and hydrated.Chapter 6: Songs Played During the Podcast (12:30) The podcast concludes by identifying the songs played in the background, including "Journey through the Desert" by Trace Way, and several Blue Dot Sessions tracks such as "Skyway", "Borrow", "Molly Molly" and "Glass Beads", ending with a track listed as "L I T E 20, saturation 25".Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/weather-with-enthusiasm--4911017/support.

A birthday is a time to make the world a better place: do a cheshbon nefesh (soul searching), give tzedaka, and thank one's mother for what she went through. And so I do, with love." After deliberations, they conclude that this is a decree lest the Jew rent it out or lend it, or concern of a "test ride" that may be done as Shabbat begins. Rav Ada permitted selling through a broker because these concerns don't apply in that case. Rav Huna sold a cow to a non-Jew and claimed that perhaps he bought it for slaughter. Rav Chisda challenged him - why don't we worry about the matters mentioned previously? After deliberation, Rav Ashi defines in what situations it is permitted/forbidden. Rabba sold a donkey to a Jew who was suspected of selling to non-Jews. Abaye challenged him and convinced Rabba that he had made a mistake. Within Abaye's challenge, he quoted a baraita that forbids a Jew from selling weapons to a non-Jew. Rav Dimi expanded this prohibition to selling weapons to Jewish bandits/robbers. Can one sell defensive items to non-Jews? This is a subject of debate.
Today's daf is sponsored by Judy Schwartz "in memory of my very special mother Shirley K. Tydor (Sara Raizel bat Mordechai Yitzchak and Freidasima) on my birthday. A birthday is a time to make the world a better place: do a cheshbon nefesh (soul searching), give tzedaka, and thank one's mother for what she went through. And so I do, with love." Today's daf is sponsored by Batsheva & Daniel Pava on the second yahrzeit of Batsheva's father, Reb Shlomo ben Yehuda Aryeh Vegh, z"l. "My father was an orphaned child survivor of Auschwitz. He lived to see 3 generations of descendants, including grandchildren and great grandchildren serving in Tzahal and Sherut Leumi. Every morning, my father would get up at 5 am and learn gemara. He would also complete the entire Sefer Tehillim each week. My Dad is, and will forever be, my hero." Today's daf is sponsored by the Shuster family in memory of Dr. Sandra Shimoff, the mother of Randi Shuster. "Her devotion to the study of Torah and Shas will always be remembered by her family and all those who knew her." Today's daf is sponsored by Rabbi Art Gould in gratitude to HaShem on the occasion of my engagement to Laini Millar Melnick. "I never thought I would be this happy again in my lifetime. I stood under the chuppa once and it worked out pretty well; I can't wait to stand under the chuppa again." The Drunken Odyssey with John King: A Podcast About the Writing Life
After taking a year off to recover, Jeff Shuster return again for a May the 4th episode of The Drunken Odyssey, in which we discuss the seldom-discussed Ewoks trilogy. As a result, we might never have another May the 4th conversation. But the conversation was lively.
Send us a textThe extraordinary journey of Volodymyr Zelensky—from Ukraine's most beloved comedian to its wartime president—represents one of history's most dramatic political transformations. Simon Shuster, who has reported from Ukraine and Russia for over 15 years, joins us to discuss his revealing biography "The Showman: Inside the Invasion that Shook the World and Made a Leader of Volodymyr Zelensky."Having first met Zelensky during his improbable presidential campaign in 2019, Shuster witnessed firsthand how an entertainer with zero political experience captured Ukraine's highest office by playing a fictional president on television. What started as a seemingly naive political experiment took a profound turn when Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.Shuster takes us behind the scenes of Zelensky's remarkable metamorphosis from lighthearted performer to resolute wartime leader. Drawing from exclusive interviews with Zelensky, his wife Olena Zelenska, and top military commanders including General Valery Zaluzhny, the biography presents a nuanced portrait that avoids both hagiography and undue criticism. We explore how Zelensky consciously redesigned his persona when confronted with existential crisis, leveraging his performance skills to project strength and determination when Ukraine needed it most.Particularly fascinating is how Zelensky revolutionized wartime communication, using social media and direct appeals to bypass traditional diplomatic channels and mobilize global support. His stubborn confidence—sometimes alienating allies with relentless demands—nevertheless secured unprecedented levels of military assistance when Ukraine's survival hung in the balance. As the war continues with no clear end in sight, we discuss the challenges Zelensky faces in negotiating any potential peace settlement and what the future might hold for this unlikely world leader who found himself thrust into history. Whether you're interested in geopolitics, leadership in crisis, or the power of communication in modern warfare, this conversation offers invaluable insights into how one man's transformation mirrored his nation's fight for survival.

Action Comics #1, published on April 18th, 1938, featured the first ever appearance of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's iconic superhero, Superman. The character already boasted invincibility, had a hopeless crush on Lois Lane, and an inexplicable penchant for wearing bright red underpants on the outside of his costume. But, as yet, he could not fly, did not live in Kansas, and did not work at the Daily Planet. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how Siegel and Shuster came to sell the rights to their creation for a paltry $130; reveal the Jewish subtexts of Krypton and Batman; and consider whether Superman's liberal politics prevented DC from fully embracing the character they'd unleashed… Further Reading: • ‘Action Comics #1: Superman' (DC, 1938): https://archive.org/details/superman-1938-issue-1/mode/2up • ‘Superman at 80: The Jewish origins of the Man of Steel and the 'curse' that haunts the actors who play him' (The Independent, 2018): https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/features/superman-jewish-origins-film-adaptations-curse-jerry-siegel-christopher-reeve-henry-cavill-a8344461.html • ‘Superman' (Columbia, 1948): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7soDPQUxpOk #30s #Publishing #Jewish #Comics Love the show?
