The story so far: Three friends are trapped in an underground movie rental store managed by a magical anthropomorphic mole man, have adventures, and watch movies to pass the time and figure ways out of predicaments. This week, Greg DMs a quick game of D&D, but everyone is pretty terrible at it. So we decide to watch a movie to get us more into the mindset of adventuring -- 1983's Deathstalker! While discussing this schlocktastic trashterpiece, we delve into dad bods (again), late stage huskyism, hot Jason, cave perverts, and woods kings! My guest this week is writer SW Kent, whose new novel is The Storyteller from Balincia. He's been a storyteller himself since he was a kid, but for the first act of his career he had to rest his fiction-writing muscles so that he could concentrate on his job, which largely concerned programs for diversity, equity, and inclusion. In that role, he helped people in marginalized communities tell their stories. Now it's his turn to tell his own story, through his favorite genre of dark epic fantasy. We'll have that conversation in a minute. First, if you're enjoying The Sewers of Paris, I hope you'll consider supporting the show on Patreon. You may also enjoy my YouTube videos about the making of iconic movies and TV shows. With chapters released every Monday and Friday, the podcast provides a pulp-era serial experience with short episodes released regularly. The Thieves Guild Doesn't Exist!Or so the population of the isolated city-state of Ness believe. As far as everyone knows, the Thieves Guild is a symbolic thing meant to represent the hidden and vile citizens of the city that steal from those who work hard for what they own. It isn't actually real. And the Guildmaster of the Thieves Guild? Well, their only real duty is being pelted by garbage in the Founder's Day parade every year.Irresponsible Ralan Miller figures he is untouchable as he creates mischief across the city. After all, he is guildless and thus beyond the reach of the authority of all the guildmasters. That is until his brother, the powerful guildmaster of the Merchant Guild, loses patience with him, and names him the Thieves Guild guildmaster shortly before Founders Day. Facing a future of angry citizens throwing rotten fruit and garbage at him during the Founders Day parade, Ralan soon discovers that the Thieves Guild isn't so symbolic after all and may be the only hope in saving the city from a simmering civil war.The Thieves Guild is a sprawling epic saga that starts with Ralan, the mischievous brother to the guildmaster of the Merchant Guild, thrust into an unexpected central role in navigating geographical conflict, secret societies, mysterious cities, and heroic feats. The Thieves Guild ebook or paperback is available at all major bookstores via this link. This podcast is produced by In Shambles Productions. In this season of Conan And Friends we feature all the Conan stories written in Robert E. Howard's lifetime. This week we present the full length story "A Witch Shall Be Born," which was published in Weird Tales magazine in 1934. Conan the Barbarian is a legendary fictional character known for his unparalleled strength, indomitable spirit, and savage warrior skills. Created by writer Robert E. Howard, Conan roams the ancient and treacherous Hyborian Age, a fictional prehistoric era. With his rippling muscles, wild mane of hair, and fierce eyes, Conan embodies the archetype of the muscle-bound warrior. Born in the harsh Cimmerian lands, he endures a life of constant struggle, battling his way through a myriad of dangerous quests, fierce battles, and encounters with sorcery. Conan's tales are marked by his unwavering determination, cunning intellect, and primal instincts, making him an iconic symbol of heroism in the history of sword and sorcery. We'll be presenting the works of Conan in the reading order recommended by scholars. Conan And Friends is brought to you by In Shambles Productions. Join Bobber and Shaner as they discuss Shawn Inmon's book, Kradak the Champion. Kradak the Champion's first appearance is standing atop a mound of bodies; some of which are not quite dead. In his arm is a chubby child he's rescued, who is destined to become a leader. Kardak is not just a hero. He's a warrior. This image is captured in a film that, in the real world, features Steve, an actor who plays Kradak in a series of B-films. Unfortunately, the film attracts the wrong kind of viewer when Rista and Grint come through a portal from Arkana, view the film portrait of this hero's exploits, and decide that Steve is just the person to save their world. It isn't until they kidnap him and bring him to Arkana, the portal closed behind them, that they discover that Steve is anything but a hero.

The history and application of sword and sorcery - a term initially used to describe a wave of pre-Tolkien fantasy writing - is the latest subject for Chris and Alex in Footnote #9, which plots the relationship between this kind of ‘rough' historical fiction and questions of world-building, magic, and myth. Topics include sword and sorcery's origin story in the 1930s and links to the paperback revolution of short stories and cheap pulp fiction; its cinematic adaptations during the 1970s and 1980s from Conan the Barbarian to The Beastmaster; and the response to this sub-genre by Hollywood's elite and what this meant for fantasy's broader critical and cultural prestige. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo**
