My guest on Ep. 23 is Erica Gavel, who is currently on the national wheelchair basketball team and was a member of the Para Pan-Am team which placed atop the podium in 2019. A 3rd knee injury (2011) while playing stand up basketball led her down this new path of wheelchair basketball after multiple trusted individuals presented the possibility of her pursuing the Paralympics. As Erica mentioned in our conversation, the transition wasn’t always smooth, but this was an opportunity she had to see through. At first Erica didn’t fully believe she could make it to the Paralympics, which I’m sure many athletes can connect with. I can’t imagine how daunting of a goal that must have been, where do you even start? In order to get started on this path Erica first had to come to grips with the realization & process of letting go of old goals & setting new ones. And while new is good in many ways, it is filled with twists and turns, especially when you’re learning a new skill. Little did Erica know that this new path would see her traveling the world – finishing up her schooling at University of Alabama where she received a scholarship, followed by world championships, tournaments, and even the Paralympic games. Erica is now preparing for the upcoming Tokyo Paralympics – with hopes of getting Canada on top of the podium once again. From one para athlete to another, I am so excited to see the performance of Erica & her teammates on display on the Paralympic stage. When producer Erica Mu moved back to her hometown in 2014, she said goodbye to a past life without any idea what exactly her new life should look like. Looking for the most grounded place she could find, she went to the local mall early one morning, turned on her tape recorder, and started talking to everyone she could meet. As Erica made her way through this sprawling landscape of mostly Chinese businesses in one of the most East Asian cities in the country, she peeked in the dreams, annoyances, and love lives of dim sum diners, shop owners, security guards, young children, young parents, weightlifters, all-night partiers, and one very skilled harmonica player. But as she grasped for some universal truth that would tie all the threads of the mall, Erica realized that the unpredictable, unresolved mess of everyday life is exactly what makes it something to treasure. Good Morning, Colorado, and welcome to the Daily Sun-Up. It’s Tuesday December 15th, and we’re feeling lucky to start the day with you. Join us daily for an in-depth look at one of our top stories. Today, we’re discussing how nearly a third of Jeffco Public Schools students qualify for subsidized school meals. Many community members are now worried that they can’t access the meals during the pandemic. Before we begin, let’s take a look at what happened on this day in Colorado history - adapted from Derek R Everett’s book “Colorado Day by Day”: Today, we take you back to December 15th, 1962 when Colorado’s newest winter sports resort opened in Eagle County. The resort boasted the nation’s first gondola. But what the Vail Lodge and Inn lacked on opening day, unfortunately, was snow. Now, our feature story. Feeding families who are struggling to make ends meet during the pandemic has risen as a top priority for many school districts across Colorado. But a band of community organizations is calling on Jeffco Public Schools to do even more to make sure its students have enough food. Colorado Sun reporter Erica Breunlin is joining today to fill us in on what’s going on. Erica, can you begin by explaining why community organizations and community members are so concerned about students' access to school meals right now? Is the distribution process? What’s the biggest issue here? As Erica mentioned Jeffco Public Schools, which is educating 79,150 students this school year, is taking steps to increase access. A pilot program launches on Monday in which school buses will deliver meals to neighborhoods. The district is one component of a broader community network responsible for making sure families are fed day after day -- a network that relies just as much on other community staples like food banks. But school meal programs have become even more critical this year as churches and other programs that traditionally offer hot meal options to the community are not open because of safety issues. Thanks for listening. Before we go here are a few stories you should know about today: Colorado received its first shipment of the coronavirus vaccine Monday morning, launching a months-long inoculation process that health officials hope will start to have meaningful effects on limiting transmission of the disease in the state by late spring. Records obtained by the Sun show that Jenna Ellis, the attorney from Colorado representing President Donald Trump in his bid to overturn his 2020 election loss, was fired from her job as a Weld County prosecutor in 2013 for making mistakes on cases. Now that the coronavirus vaccine is here, public health agencies must convince people to take it. At least 70% of Coloradans must get the shot to achieve herd immunity, but is a $1 million marketing budget enough to build credibility? Erica M. Elliott, M.D., Shares Her Incredible Journey ‘Medicine and Miracles in the High Desert’Medicine and Miracles in the High Desert: My Life Among the Navajo People is a “food-for-the-soul” story about a young Anglo woman whose life is forever changed after she bravely takes a dive into an unfamiliar world and discovers deep, earth-centered wisdom and mystical knowledge.SANTA FE, N.M. — Author, Adventurer, Speaker, Dr. Erica Elliott, M.D. has released a first book that recounts the early years of her extraordinary life living among the Navajo people. As a young woman in the early 1970s, Erica arrives at a Navajo boarding school to teach, and then becomes a student herself of a mystical, earth-centered wisdom that has been lost to most in today’s modern world. As Erica reaches across a wide cultural divide to learn the Navajo language, the people begin to trust her and invite her into their homes, their ceremonies, and into their hearts.Years later, Erica returns to serve the Navajo people as a medical doctor in an underserved clinic, performing emergency procedures and delivering babies. When a medicine man offers to thank her with a ceremony, more miracles unfold. This true story of personal risk and high adventure paints a rare, contemporary picture of Navajo life that at once elicits inspiration, deep sadness and respect for the Native American people. In Medicine and Miracles in the High Desert, Dr. Elliott not only reveals to the reader a world that is foreign to many, but also brings to light the continued prejudice experienced by Native Americans. “This book is about bridging the cultural divide through efforts to understand and see the world through the eyes of other people — the people who were here first,” she explains. —Larry Dossey, MD, author of One Mind: How Our Individual Mind Is Part of a Greater Consciousness and Why It Matters—Rev. What up, dogs. As Erica so delicately put, "we're cutting up a girl this week." That's right, folks, we watched The Autopsy of Jane Doe. It gets crazy in this movie so hold on to your knickers. Is that how you use that word? I don't know exactly what knickers are. Whatever, this movie is wild. Come listen to us poorly explain it ¯_(ツ)_/¯
On today’s show I am going to outline five lessons I learned at the She Podcasts LIVE conference that are relevant to freelance business owners. She Podcasts LIVE was an inaugural conference for the She Podcasts community, which started as a Facebook group that now has 14,000 members—all women podcasters. There’s also a She Podcasts podcast hosted by co-creators Elsie Escobar and Jessica Kupferman. While I learned a bunch of podcast strategies and tips at the conference, there were also tips and reminders that can be helpful for all freelance business owners, no matter what service you provide. Lesson #1 is brought to you by Erica Mandy, host of the very successful podcast the NewsWorthy. Erica is an experienced broadcast journalist who quit her job and launched a daily 10-minute news podcast just a few years ago. In her session at She Podcasts, she offered up the The Six Cs of Success. No. 1 is confidence. Erica says you have to have the confidence that you are resourceful and that you can figure out the solutions. She posed the question: What is the traffic jam in your business? We ask this of our clients, but we should also ask it of ourselves: What is the problem you’re trying to solve? This also reminds me of the book I’m reading right now: Marie Forleo’s “Everything Is Figureoutable.” Lesson #2 was also from Erica’s list: consistency. As Erica said: You have to take it seriously when no one is looking. It takes a lot of work to work ON your business, not just IN your business. Are we doing the marketing and networking and analyzing and planning when no one is looking? Lesson #3 comes from Phylecia Jones, creator of iFind You Close, a research company that helps people find speaking gigs. During a period of time when Phylecia was trying to get more people to pay attention to her and her podcast—which was called Ask the Budgetologist—she asked herself every morning: Who needs to know my name today? Think about it: Don’t you want clients and potential clients to immediately think of you when they need a freelancer that provides the services you do? Almost all of my work is from referrals. That means people know my name. My clients think of me when they have work, but they also think to recommend me to others. Lesson #4 is a combo. It’s spend more time with LinkedIn. At the She Podcasts conference, Karen Yankovich, CEO of Uplevel Media, presented a stellar presentation on how to maximize LinkedIn. A few quick tips: Put LinkedIn on your phone and log in and save the password, so you can more quickly respond to LinkedIn outreach. If you spot a green dot on someone’s profile photo that means they are on LinkedIn now, so you should contact them no. Make sure the keywords that pop up on Your Dashboard (on your profile page) are the keywords you want to be known for. Lesson #5: Take care of yourself. I’ve mentioned before how much I love conferences but also that I’m a complete introvert. I have to prepare myself for all that networking and people time. While I loved the overall She Podcasts vibe, a few sessions started out with bold interaction, including describing our podcasts to a stranger in a superhero voice. I implore all conference speakers and meeting planners: I know you’re looking to make conferences more interactive, but please consider introverts. If you are doing some sort of interactive thing, you need to put that in the session description and you need to say it up front when people walk in the room. Please. As for individuals, You need to take care of yourself in all situations. There’s a balance between opening yourself up to new experiences and taking care of your own needs. This may mean walking out if you are uncomfortable, saying no, skipping sessions to relax alone in your hotel room. In your business, this means structuring your business around what works best for your productivity but also your mental health. It could mean not taking calls after work hours. Not working on weekends. Saying no to a project with glaring red flags. Saying no to volunteer activities because you’re overwhelmed. Notice how a lot of these examples are simply saying no. YOU are the owner and creator of your business. YOU are in charge. You don’t want to put off the vibe that you’re desperate and will do ANYTHING for a client or to accept a project. It needs to be the right fit for YOU. So, take care of yourself. Biz Bite: Embrace whimsy The Bookshelf: “The Widows of Malabar Hill” by Sujata Massey Resources: Episode #24 of Deliberate Freelancer: Networking Tips, Especially as an Introvert Episode #6 of Deliberate Freelancer: Make the Most of Conferences Episode #25 of Deliberate Freelancer: Finding Your Community, with She Podcasts Co-Founder Jessica Kupferman She Podcasts Erica Mandy’s The NewsWorthy podcast “Everything is Figureoutable” by Marie Forleo Phylecia Jones’ iFind You Close Ask the Budgetologist podcast Karen Yankovich and Good Girls Get Rich podcast
Episode 080 Erica Ross, She Reflects, a spiral journey for the feminine soul Erica Ross brings the wisdom of over 40 years work in the creative, healing and spiritual arts. Erica infuses her life experience as a dancer, artist, DJ, facilitator, trainer, sister and mother into the pages of her newly published book, She Reflects: A Spiral Journey for the Feminine Soul, and the accompanying, She Reflects Journal and Colouring Book. As a dancer, artist and facilitator of healing, expressive and sacred experiences, and the co-founder of, The Move Dance Collective—Toronto's largest ecstatic dance community—Erica has dedicated herself to the "liberation and healing of the feminine soul." Her work in this includes, Dance Our Way Home, and Radical Radiance, 2 healing processes that facilitate the discovery and re-discovery of women's own unique gifts, power, and voices. As Erica says, she has followed her wild heart and creative impulses around the globe since the early 1970's, making homes in Canada, the USA, Indonesia and Wales. She shares that dance, creativity and unveiling the power of the Divine Mirror has been her life's work and her calling. Erica shared the powerful story of the goddesses Amaterasu and Uzume, and this episode might be worth listening to just to hear that, but she goes on to share the power of being clear mirrors for each other, and how that work is part of the gift of being in true community. Erica shares the potential for ecstatic dance to bring us home to our bodies' wisdom, in particular our womb wisdom and the power of tuning into our own beat. She says, "We're awakening, stirring, rising... connecting and dancing. We're exploring coming home to ourselves and claiming our right to re-order the world... and our dear Gaia needs us to do just that for the well-being of all." If you’re a Bachelor fan, you’re already familiar with the lovely Erica Rose! We became really good friends on Bachelor Pad, and she was even at our wedding on Married at First Sight. Erica became a single mom shortly after having her daughter, and is now very happily remarried. We think her tips on finding love as a single mom will be really powerful for all the single moms listening to this podcast. As you’ll learn today, Erica met a lawyer at work, and they quickly decided together to have a child that they would co-parent. They got pregnant on the first try, and actually ended up getting engaged. As Erica reveals, though, this was out of obligation more than being in love; their personalities were too different to be compatible as a couple. When her daughter was just six weeks old, Erica and her ex separated, and she moved from California back home to Texas for more family support. She and her ex tried to keep things open and have a happy family, but it was very painful for both of them. It took a while before Erica was ready to look for love again, because she needed time to get back to being herself again. One of the most impactful parts of this episode is Erica’s insight and tips for single moms. She talks about how important it is not to date until you’re ready. Other tips include having a good support system around you, and making sure you’re looking and feeling confident before you start dating. If you’re a single parent (or know one), don’t miss this episode that will give you insight, inspiration, and an intimate look into what it’s like to date after having kids. By now you probably know that Jamie is pregnant again! We’re so excited, and want to bring you along on our journey. That’s why today’s episode includes the audio from the exact moment that Doug learned about the pregnancy. We had just gotten back from Disney, and he was feeding Henley. As you’ll hear, his reaction wasn’t as excited as it could have been (and neither was Henley’s), but you get to share in the genuine, real reaction rather than a staged moment. Today’s amazing guests are the fantastic Erica Eckman from Everything Erica and her husband Dan, a real estate guru. She and I met on social media when she reached out on Instagram, and she’s honestly one of my best friends now. She and her husband are intelligent, down-to-earth, and just lovely people. If you’ve ever wondered about how Erica and Jamie met, this is the episode for you! You’ll learn that Erica took a chance and reached out, the two featured each other, and the friendship blossomed organically from there. As Erica points out, you never know what might happen if you just say “hi”! Erica is a fairly new mom, and the four of us will talk about the experiences of birth and parenthood. Of course having children is an amazing blessing, but there are definitely parts of the pregnancy, birth, and parenthood process that’s a struggle. There’s no shame in asking for help or not being able to do it all yourself. We’ll dig into all sorts of things, including how Erica’s birth process went, whether men look at women’s vaginas differently after watching them give birth, how long the recovery process takes, how much it hurts after birth (including a story involving peeing on a nurse), the issues that can be involved in breastfeeding, and much more. As Erica navigates her personal and professional journey, she asks God daily for one thing: "Lord, please use me as a tool to build your kingdom, leading me to the people, communities, and businesses that I can serve in your name." Erica's winding road to professional "success" is evidence that God can use you in the most unexpected and amazing ways, when you just say "yes" to every assignment he presents. Erica spent the first 10 years of her career in the financial industry, including investments, commercial banking, and loan underwriting. In 2007, God transitioned her into the public sector, where she led the Ex-Offender Reentry Division for the City of Dallas, for nearly 5 years. In 2013, she blended her private sector and public sector experience, as the Business Retention & Expansion Manager, for the Cedar Hill Economic Development Corporation. There she supported the needs of Cedar Hill businesses, ranging from importing and exporting, commercial real estate, workforce, organizational structure, to accessing capital, and startup strategies. During this time, Erica found a true calling for building collaborations amongst non-profits, corporations, educators, community leaders, and government entities. Erica loves exploring new cultures, and has been called upon by the World Affairs Council to host international delegates from nearly 10 different countries. Erica recently stepped out on faith and began her own consulting firm, Expansion Solutions Consulting Services, to broaden her impact in the areas of workforce development, leadership development training, and economic development. Erica also owns another company, that Conscious Couture Luxury Resale Events was birthed out of the Molett family's own tumultuous journey through the recession and a televised financial bootcamp, a small yard sale idea, and a few angels on earth. Conscious Couture combines fashion and philanthropy, to support the fight against human trafficking, showcase emerging designers, and create global girl power. Attendees shop the personal closets of celebrities and local style influencers, sample sales from designer runway collections, and rare finds from couture consignment boutiques. Most importantly, they leave inspired by the empowering Style Boss panels, with women who have succeeded in areas like fashion, philanthropy, sports, business, and journalism. You won't want to miss hearing Erica's story!
As Erica and Steve continue exploring Bible stories that make us scratch our heads, we explore the lesser-known, but vitally important, second half of the story of Jonah, that ends with an object lesson featuring a bean plant that grows up over night, a divinely-appointed worm, and God's surprising love for the ones labeled "the enemy." We'll see that the God we meet, not just in Jonah's story, but throughout the Scriptures, has a way of deliberately seeking out those seen as beyond the reach of grace, whether it's Israel's arch-enemy, the people of Nineveh, or those we place on the other side of the line between "us" and "them" in our day, too. Give it a listen, and join the conversation!
As Erica likes to say: if at first you don’t succeed, try a new career. This year alone, she has worked in commercial fishing, hospitality, seamstressing, and as of a couple days ago, she was stuck off the Oregon coast in an enormous storm as she tried to track down nesting sites of Marbled Murrelets. It is always nice to be back on land where the dancing is easier and the next vocation awaits.
