Join your favorite personal stylist, Holly Katz, along with special guest and lifelong bestie, Jessica Kupferman, a pivotal member of the FCP podcast community. Jessica is a co-founder and owner of She Podcasts, a dynamic women's podcasting community and live event organizer. She's here to share her transformative journey through significant health changes and weight loss, exploring both the challenges and triumphs of redefining personal her style. Before we get started: Go to our YouTube Channel to watch this episode! Key Topics: 1. Health Challenges and Decisions: o Jessica discusses her decision to undergo gastric bypass surgery, which was motivated by a desire to avoid the health issues that affected her mother, who passed away at a young age due to cancer that was diagnosed too late. o This decision came after years of neglecting her own health due to stress and poor lifestyle choices, leading to a realization about the importance of proactive health management. 2. Emotional Adjustments: o Post-surgery, Jessica faced significant emotional challenges, including dealing with body image issues and the psychological impacts of her physical transformation. o She shares insights into the complexities of self-sabotage and anxiety that accompanied her weight loss, as well as the strategies she used to overcome these barriers, such as hypnosis and therapy. 3. Fashion Transformations: o With her new body, Jessica ventured into the world of fashion with a new perspective. She talks about the practical aspects of shopping for clothes that fit her changing size, including the importance of getting properly fitted undergarments and the joy of wearing styles she previously felt were unattainable. o Specific examples include transitioning from plus-size to standard sizes, exploring high-waisted pants paired with shorter tops, and the challenges of adjusting to how clothes fit her body type that continues to change. 4. Inspiration and Motivation: o Jessica's physical changes have spurred a deeper engagement with her health and appearance. She describes how these changes have motivated her to maintain her health better, engage in physical activities she once avoided, and embrace a more active lifestyle. #YYYAASSSSS o This newfound motivation extends to her approach to fashion, where she now takes joy in dressing up and feels inspired to present herself in ways that reflect her inner confidence and vitality. 5. Holly's Fashion Recommendations: Holly provides targeted advice for Jessica and anyone navigating the challenges of shopping after significant weight loss. Key recommendations include: o Prioritizing Proper Fit: -Emphasizing the importance of wearing clothes that properly fit your new body shape, which will 100% include getting re-measured for foundational garments like bras and undergarments. -Understanding the new sizes and cuts that best flatter your transformed figure. o Updating the Wardrobe Gradually: -Holly advises a gradual approach to wardrobe updates to accommodate ongoing body changes, suggesting an investment in transitional pieces that can adjust to slight size variations. o Choosing Strategic Pieces: -Recommending specific types of clothing that can enhance the appearance and boost confidence, such as high-waisted pants, structured tops, and layering pieces that can define the waist and balance proportions. o Embracing New Styles: -Encouraging exploration of new styles that may have felt off-limits before, such as bold prints, tailored outfits, and more form-fitting options, to celebrate and showcase your new body confidently. o Maintaining an Adaptable Mindset: Understanding that body shape may continue to change and adapting the fashion choices accordingly, while keeping a positive and open mindset towards these changes. It's a horror show, kids, at least it was around the beautiful Sonic Bloom Awards banquet table during the She Podcasts Unplugged! event in concert with PodFest 2024. And yet, despite the unsolicited (geriatric) pick up lines, latent latex balloon smell and traumatic special-effect makeup photos, the most exciting thing we saw at this year's extraordinary event was how to optimize your podcast workflow using artificial intelligence. Honestly, you think we would have investigated this option sooner given how strained our biological intelligence has been lately. Bah DAH cha! Seriously, Dear Listener. For this episode, we tasked AI with the challenge of writing 5 sample titles with accompanying 100 word blurbs for use as show notes. Here is, word for word, what the computer spit out: The Worst Pickup Lines (and Other Orlando Mishaps) Melissa and Amy recap their eventful trip to a women in podcasting conference, which included being subjected to cringeworthy pickup lines from older men at the hotel bar. They also share hilarious stories of laughter-induced urination, getting accosted with graphic images, and the overall quirky escapades of their "velveteen rabbity" Orlando getaway. Holding in Laughter and Pee: Our Crazy Orlando Trip Through uncontrollable laughter, Melissa and Amy recount wetting themselves numerous times during their women in podcasting conference in Orlando. From horrifying bathroom smells to inappropriate overshares from strangers to questionable travel snafus, their eventful trip offered plenty of comedic fodder, despite the lackluster hotel amenities and odd mishmash of conference attendees. The Time We Peed Our Pants Laughing in Orlando Melissa and Amy recap the nonstop hilarity during their women's podcasting conference trip to Orlando, from getting hit on by overly confident men at bars to a stranger ambushing them with graphic images. Their days were filled with laughing so hard they peed their pants, yelling at people out of fear, and enjoying each other's company amidst the quirky escapades. Strange Pickup Lines and Public Peeing: Our Orlando Adventure During their women's podcasting conference getaway, Melissa and Amy were in stitches recounting ridiculous pickup attempts from men at hotel bars along with uncontrollably laughing until they wet themselves...in public! From horrifying bathroom smells to graphic photo ambushes, their overnight trip was filled with hilarious mishaps and lots of laughter. One Wild and Crazy Orlando Trip Melissa and Amy recap their eventful Orlando trip chock-full of laughter, escapades and hijinks - from cringeworthy pickup lines from men to uncontrollable giggling that led to public peeing. Despite a questionable hotel stay and odd conference attendees, they made the most of it, supporting their friend and enjoying time together, even if it meant getting ambushed by a stranger's graphic images! And if you think that's cool, consider telling a friend about our show. You can find us on all the socials at @ListenBrilliant, or on your preferred podcast player as Brilliant Observations Podcast. If the universe doesn't magically create a space that's meant for you (because it won't), you create it yourself. That's exactly what Jessica Kupferman did when she and co-founder Elsie Escobar started She podcasts back in 2013 and 2014. After noticing that a lot of podcasters were men and “gurus” who were just interviewing one another, they decided they wanted to do something different. Fast forward to today, Jessica and She Podcasts is still growing, hosting an active Facebook group, live conferences, a coaching program, a new 501(c)3, and a host of other ventures. This was such a fun conversation about living up to our parents' (and society's) expectations, gaining visibility online, attending in-person conferences, making a space for yourself, why nothing has to be perfect, and so much more. Jessica Kupferman is the co-host and co-founder of the She Podcasts brand, which currently supports over 21,000 female podcasters and has a digital marketing reach of over 55,000 content creators. Her sweet spot is helping podcasters set up systems for growth and training them on how to obtain sponsorship. She also is an internet “Bat Girl” with an odd amount of experience in way too many software services. When she's not planning the next She Podcasts LIVE, you can find her offering education to independent podcasters on marketing, growth, and sponsorship. Here's what we covered on the episode: Why + How Jessica Started a Podcast How Jessica and I met in 2012 when we were both in Elizabeth DiAlto's coaching group and how I've been on Jessica's podcast, Lady Business Radio Jessica explains that she is formally trained in marketing and sales but fell into podcasting - Jessica does more of the marketing and branding, whereas Elsie, her partner, does more of the voices and audio technology Before starting a podcast, Jessica was a social media and website designer but started a podcast because that wasn't going as fast as she would have liked I talk about how Lady Business Radio was a big inspiration for my show Jessica felt that a lot of other talk shows were men interviewing men, which annoyed her - so she thought about all the fascinating women she knew and decided she'd interview them and get into more than just their rise to the top story The reason Jessica stopped Lady Business Radio was because she got pregnant, and by then, Jessica was also doing She Podcasts Podcast; when she came back from maternity leave, the Lady Business group she had created was stagnant, but the She Podcasts group was bursting which is why she dove hard into that business When Jessica started Lady Business Radio, she was a blogger and would write emails to her list, but never really had comments on her blog posts or emails, but when Jessica started the podcast, she shared that suddenly she had feedback, mentions, comments, etc. from an audience that she had never met Jessica believes that having a podcast gives people an insight into you that they would not normally get, which elevates the relationship between you and your audience People say the market is saturated with podcasts, but there's only one person that sounds like you with your experience and knowledge Lady Business Radio was a way for Jessica to build her business, and she used the platform to do that I love that Jessica asked the questions everyone is wondering on her show When Jessica was a designer and coach, she had to maintain two brands because the She Podcasts had to be a brand, and Jessica Kupferman was a separate brand Jessica shares that she rebranded her personal brand 6 times but says now she focuses mostly on the She Podcasts brand because that's how she makes money and because the two brands are honestly tied together in many ways Starting a Business From a Podcast + She Podcasts LIVE How Jessica enjoys the clientele of podcasters more and that they were asking her for things like a directory, a membership, or a conference - so they delivered by turning She Podcasts into a business and conference Jessica has changed the look of the She Podcasts site multiple times because she believes you can change your logo colors, put your logo on top of any pattern, and it will still be recognizable As long as you keep the font and logo the same, you can change out the design elements - Jessica says it's like changing clothes on your brand Elsie and Jessica have tried many ways to make money over the years, but in 2019, the conference made them the most money - due to the pandemic, they created a virtual membership because they wanted to support women podcasters but also still make money The hotel they had booked for their conference told them they had to do their conference by the end of 2021, which didn't really create revenue because they had to hire and pay so many people to help This year, the conference and membership are making revenue, but Jessica says it has been tricky because of the pandemic Right now, Jessica says they are making money through sponsorships for their conference, podcast, social media, and membership - Jessica shares the other sources of revenue they are considering Elsie is who helped Jessica start the podcast - Elsie reached out about doing a show with Jessica, and within 3 days, they had a brand, website, and logo How Elsie has a full-time job working as the community manager for Libsyn, a podcast hosting company When it comes to the business, Elsie helps with the content, membership, Facebook group, answers questions; and Jessica says Elsie is the one with the podcast skills and is the people's person Elsie works her full-time job and helps with the business on the side - Jessica has another employee, Melissa, who is an operational manager The She Podcasts Conference is October 11 - 14 in Washington, D.C. - find out more at shepodcastslive.com Going forward, Jessica says she is going to focus on selling as many tickets as possible, and then after the conference is over, they will look for another hotel for their next conference and figure out their next project, which might be a directory or network of podcasts Jessica shares that she finds the process of coaching and being coached difficult but enjoys being a content creator and marketer By going to conferences, saying yes to interviews, and coaching people, Jessica has been able to build her reputation and relationships with big companies and other podcasters in the industry I share that I don't necessarily want to leave the online space, but I do want to work on more mainstream projects and campaigns If we want to stay as experts in the digital space, Jessica says we need to figure out the Web3 and metaverse, so we can learn it for ourselves to then help others when they ask How deciding what you want to do is hard - it's okay to change what you do or rework it, so it supports what you want to do moving forward Part of the reason Jessica stopped doing Lady Business Radio is that it turned into her asking people she admired to be on the show to other people asking her to be on the show, which made Jessica feel like she had to decide who was worthy of being on the show I realized after years of saying I'm not good at branding that I am - I share that if I'm going to be interviewed on a podcast, I want to talk about building a brand that's specific to the products and services you build because that's what I'm obsessed with Jessica wants you to know that your business is your design - if something is not fun anymore, you stop, but if you miss the money, you restart and do it in a way that's easier for you or less soul-sucking If you want to start a podcast, the best place to go is shepodcastlive.com - the speakers at the conference are all podcasters; it's inspirational, educational, supportive, and fun How being in the same room with people who are doing the same thing as you helps you feel like you're a part of something and reassures you of what you're building Links mentioned: She Podcasts She Podcasts LIVE Like what you heard? You're a mean one, Rupert Grint. Mallory has a surprise Harry Potter sighting — or does she? — while shopping for back to school supplies at her local Target. Melissa wanders down Pet Peeve Lane with special recognition for slow drivers in the left lane. Amy takes a dog leg to donut town while Missy salivates into her microphone. Melissa gives the beach another try, only to discover her that her formerly charming friend Hindi is actually hiding a shameful culinary-based secret. (Fah Reek.) It's ok, though. Oh, Todd. You heard it here first, gang: there are LIT terally card carrying members of the KKK. And yes, they're recruiting. Stupid Todd makes an appearance on the golf court with a relationship drama of his own making. And Amy records on the road Chez Brilliant, which means the call is coming “from inside the house.” The ladies evaluate the latest Summer Slang. Hint: we are not hip. Missy blows the shofar with a new call for you bitches to Brag. (They're just the facts, ma'am.) We both work through the realities of the Midlife Health Crisis. Oy. Will it inspire you to live better? Or fear more? As always, Dear Listener, we trust you to decide. On that note… Brilliant Observations is a coping conversation for many, including us. That means we go out of our way to avoid topics we spend a good deal of our real lives talking about — things like reproductive rights, systemic racism, attacks on United States democracy, gun culture, atrocities in Ukraine, the global rise of fascism — you know, lighthearted, safe-for-mixed-company stuff. Point being, we staunchly avoid weighty, real world topics as a service to you. Our goal is to provide a lil relief from what otherwise consumes your day. Let us know if it's working. Jersey Jews and Old Coots Turns out I'm a pecker. Things are getting a little passive aggressive at the Target checkout… but then again, who am I to tell you what kid of day to have? Missy buys all the baked goods from the local farmer's market, and discovers a secret horde of faithful challah bakers and septuagenarian sages all volunteering for the common good. Helpful public service? Intrusive and unsolicited judgement? You decide. Amy travels to Annapolis, breaks up a human trafficking ring, keeps calm on the sidelines and starts to unravel her deepest fears (spoiler alert, it's just clothes). Are you ready for the Chicken List? Plus doing things the wrong way, stealing other people's toiletries and lying, but only to yourself. All this and VERY LITTLE DISCUSSION OF REALITY, because, who can stand it. We stand for universal bodily autonomy, separation of church and state, common sense gun reform and crunchy crescent almond cookies. Elsie Escobar is a leading light in the podcasting space when it comes to diversity, women in podcasting, and raising unheard voices. As someone who's been in the space since 2006, Elsie is currently the community manager for podcast host Libsyn, the co-founder of She Podcasts, and a Podcast Hall of Fame inductee. She brings a wealth of experience and insights to this episode, with takeaways on how we can be better podcasters and community allies. Yoga as an Introduction to PodcastingElsie shares how her very first podcast was as a teacher of yoga, and how that wasn't as strange as it might sound (teaching yoga via an audio format as opposed to a visual medium). It's through this podcast that her career at Libsyn began. From Life Changes to A Podcast Career with LibsynNot long after this, Elsie was chatting with Rob Walch of Libsyn, and mentioned she was going through some big life changes, and as things would have it, this tied in perfectly with something Rob was looking for with Libsyn. The rest is history. Leading From the FrontIt wasn't long after Elsie started at Libsyn that she wanted to have an official podcast from the team, to help podcasters with their questions about the medium. Despite being the new person, she was driven to create the show, and pitched it to Rob, and from there The Feed was born. The Multiple Sides of Diversity in PodcastingElsie shares where she sees advances have been made in podcasting when it comes to diversity, and where we still struggle, as individuals and the bigger medium, at promoting and lifting more diverse voices up. For Elsie, this really needs to start at the board and decision-makers level. How Bad Podcasting Advice Led to She PodcastsAs a regular attendee of various podcast shows, Elsie soon realized that a lot of the advice given at these events was pretty generic, and wouldn't help with the goals she had. Along with Jessica Kupferman, she co-founded She Podcasts, where women could find a private, supportive space that shared the type of advice needed to grow, and flourish. The Power of Being Undeniable as a Woman in PodcastingThe theme for this year's She Podcasts Live event is "undeniable", and this is something that Elsie is very passionate about for all women in podcasting. It goes beyond the goal for the event itself, and looks to make sure every woman can say "I won't be denied". Daunted by starting your first podcast? Trust me, it's much easier than when I entered the scene. The world of podcasting used to be super bro-ey and technical. So-called “gurus” made you feel like you had to build an entire studio in your basement and buy special mixers just to get your message out. All of that changed with She Podcasts, the now 21,000-member strong online community and live event supporting podcasters from all walks of life on their journey. Meet my dear friends and the founders — Jessica Kupferman & Elsie Escobar — in this week's episode. In this episode of the podcast, we talk about: Elsie and Jessica's entrepreneurial journey from Facebook group to 21,000-member community and live event One of the biggest factors behind their Facebook group's 60% leap in growth since 2018 Jessica and Elsie's secret to building iron-clad trust with their Facebook group and fans The magnetic power of "doing the right thing" Factors to consider before monetizing your thriving online community What you can learn from them about maintaining a healthy business partnership Making people feel seen and heard vs taking your podcast to the "next level" Finding connection with fellow podcasters with completely different lifestyles, interests, and areas of expertise Where the women behind She Podcasts see social media going in the next couple years The pressure to constantly "be on" with social media and how Elsie protects her peace …and more! Someone invited her on a podcast and instantly she was hooked. She wanted to be a guest on more, but when she took a look at business shows, she found that they were a lot of “young, white dudes interviewing other young, white dudes.” Exasperated, she started her first podcast and instantly gravitated to other women who were also podcasting then. After attending a conference, she started a Facebook group called “Women Who Podcast” and added the other amazing women podcasters she spent time with, including Elsie Escobar. Little did she know that Elsie was a podcasting veteran who knew TONS of women who wanted to join the group, and she had been thinking about starting a women's podcasting group. To make a long story short, Elsie had some amazing ideas, Jess was great at helping them come to life. Together they are dedicated to helping women overcome whatever obstacles stand in their way in order to be able to express themselves, specifically through the medium of podcasting. Worrying about growth, new tech, and other podcasting distractions can cause you to forget that your audience is your audience, not a nameless pool you have to fight for week after week. Lean into them. I'm not a big fan of the word authentic. It's become overused and often used incorrectly. But there's one place where I've no issue with hearing the word, and that's when talking about your authentic self. I'm incapable of being anything other than my authentic self for more than a dozen minutes. But that may not be you. Regardless of how much you can let your authentic self shine through during your waking hours, I hope you are able to be your authentic self on your podcast. While listening to a conversation https://www.cameronesposito.com/ (Cameron Esposito) was having with https://twitter.com/jesskupferman (Jessica Kupferman) at https://www.shepodcasts.com/live/ (She Podcasts LIVE) over the weekend, I jotted this note: Your audience is your audience. It's okay to talk about things that only your audience cares about. The masses don't matter. Now, I think that's an incredibly grounded perspective for any podcaster to take and reflect on from time to time. Your audience is your audience. Those five words can work as a re-centering mantra when you need it. Saying them out loud can, when needed, help you reconnect with your show, which in turn will help you reconnect with your audience. Again, when you need to. It's very easy to get caught up in the desire to grow your podcast. And yes, I think that growing a show is important. To some degree, growth is at least somewhat important to most podcasters. How important is debatable, obviously. But if your quest to grow your show drives you too far away from the content your authentic self cares about, then you may see the opposite of growth. To thine own self be true. That's why your audience is listening to your podcast in the first place. ----- Boostagram Corner Thanks to Doug Berger for the virtual coffee! LISTEN AND LEARN, People: This week on The Fashion Crimes Podcast, Holly talks real fashion news, for real women, who have real bodies. Fashion Friends, meet Shanna Goldstone. She is the founder of Pari Passu, a STUNNING contemporary fashion line that is breaking the mold – literally – in the plus-size fashion world. In fact, she has smashed all of the current molds - and built 3 of her own damn real-world versions - because “One size style does not fit all.” Follow along as Shanna tells Holly about her fashion journey from consulting with retail companies to helping actress Melissa McCarthy launch her clothing line Seven7. Shanna hadn't even worked in the plus-size fashion space before, but, being the market researcher that she is, she dug in deep. And what she found was incredibly disturbing, and yet something all women already know: most women of the world are not the size or shape that fashion designers and stores create and sell. Sorry, this is not okay. In fact, like many of us, Shanna assumed that she would be able to research plus-size fashions for Melissa's new line by simply going to all the normal retailers - from Walmart and Target, to Lane Bryant, and Neimans and Saks. And guess what she found? NOTHING. It didn't matter how high or low the price point was, if she wanted to see a size 14 or above, it was either hidden in the back or they didn't have it. It was unbelievable that clothing wasn't readily available for sizes 0 to 30 and beyond. Question? Just how in the world are 68% of the American female population - who are a size 14 and above - actually supposed to purchase clothing, let alone find stylish fashions? Boy, do we get hot under the collar for a minute or two about that statistic! (Holly is embroidering that stat onto a pillow as we speak.) But wait! It gets better! Or worse. Shanna had a second big ‘A-HA' moment when she started looking at how clothing is actually made. She is not a designer by trade, but did go to F.I.T. where she studied fashion marketing. While sitting in meetings with Melissa's designers for the new plus-size line, she realized they were utilizing forms that were design size – a size 8! #RUDE #SERIOUSLY Yes, Ma'am. She said that. Design meetings for a new plus-size line built on size 8 forms. Just so ‘ya know, a size 8 mannequin or dressmaker form doesn't represent a real person with real curves. It looks nothing like your body, it doesn't even look like a human woman. It's basically a slightly hourglass form, with little boobs and no tush. So how are you gonna get curvy out of that? And thus, the epiphany: Tons of lines are made like this. So, Shanna set out trying to figure out why you wouldn't just use a dressmaker form that looks like the size of the customer you're designing for? Again, #duh! Fast forward: her market research brain led her to some proprietary data from a study of 3D scans of over 100,000 people for other industries. For instance, airlines need to know how big – or small! – to make airline seats. Shanna purchased a slice of this data, analyzing it to match the demographic criteria for plus-size women. Using those measurements, she then built not one, but THREE different dressmakers forms in three different shapes. Because again, one SHAPE does not fit all. And then Pari Passu was born. Beautifully designed contemporary clothing created to fit the shape of a woman, not the size. But let's get back to Holly. (Finally!) Because the universe is an amazing thing. Holly was looking for stylish plus-size fashions for one of her clients, she found Shanna through a friend - and GUESS WHAT?? If you are a fan of this show – and who isn't – you know that Holly went to summer camp with our friend of the podcast Jessica Kupferman – and OMG - Shanna went there, too!! #bestdayever So, of course Shanna is brilliant and talented and amazing, and now our new BFF. We gush over her designs, and Holly tells us how she bought a shit-ton of items for her client (which you can see on our Pinterest Board). Holly also shares a gob of unsolicited design ideas for Pari Parru, because, Holly. notsurprised Anyway, you gotta listen to this episode whether you are plus size or not. It's for all women who have had a hard time finding clothes that fit. Pari Passu is an amazing brand that supports women who want the same choices as straight size women. #hellsyes The Fashion Crimes Podcast www.fashioncrimespodcast.com Holly Katz Styling www.hollykatzstyling.com
“Seeing how it all started and seeing where I am now, one of the things that's so different than before is that now it's fancy.”If you had an iPod in 2006 and synced podcasts from iTunes, you might have seen Elsie's Yoga Class. The class was one of the first female-led yoga podcasts available. Remember, this was a time when you could browse most of the podcasts that existed fairly quickly.“I came into the scene, recording my yoga classes because I wanted to record something — I wanted to have a show,” recalls Elsie Escobar, creator of Elsie's Yoga Class. “I didn't know how to make it work. I didn't know how to do it, so I thought, you know what, I'm just gonna start doing something. I just wanted something to record so that I could understand the process.”Fast forward 100+ episodes of Elsie's Yoga Class and it's 2013 and she works at a podcast hosting company, Libsyn. By 2014, Elsie joins forces with Jessica Kupferman to found She Podcasts, now the largest network of women in podcasting. In this special episode of MetaPod we talk to Elsie Escobar, Co-founder of She Podcasts and Community Manager at Libsyn. We learn from Elsie what it's been like to be part of podcasting's professionalisation. She recounts the early days where everyone was “starting from zero” vs. now where more money and brands are involved.Elsie also explains a few things that new podcasters should understand about the heart and soul of the medium's origins. We also discuss the time and commitment that “doing all the things” as an indie podcaster requires. We also hear about Elsie's personal journey to becoming a more visible woman and role model, particularly for marginalised people and communities in podcasting.
You've heard the saying, "People buy from those they know, like, and trust." I'll also add, "People buy from those they agree with." And never has the "agree with" part of this been so prevalent. We've got a lot to have opinions on these days and we've got a lot of ways to find the opinions of others. You didn't sign up for Facebook to see what your friends in high school think about COVID-19 vaccines, but here we are... Which brings me to the point of this episode – everybody and his brother has an opinion when it comes to COVID-19 and how to handle it. And as somebody who travels, has to make a living, and maybe even does live events with a lot of people in close proximity, how do you handle this? I have some thoughts. But know no matter how you slice this, you're going to piss some people off. Are you ready? Jessica Kupferman runs an organization for female podcasters called She Podcasts. Next month, she's doing a live event with the same name in Arizona – a COVID-19 hot spot where they've put "anti-vaccine" laws in place. It's gotten messy. And it's arguably a dangerous place to be, so people are scared. Jessica is doing a great job letting the people who listen to her know what she expects from them if they want to attend her event as well as what to expect when they come. I encourage you to do the same thing, regardless on which side of the mask/vaccine debate you fall. Don't leave your people hanging, even if it make half of them angry. More in this episode... This week, our Stylist Extraordinaire Holly Katz has been doing the LORD'S WORK, People! She is with her BFF, Jessica Kupferman, CEO of She Podcasts, cleaning out her closet, swearing up a storm and getting Jessica styled for a big-ass upcoming event: She Podcast LIVE in October - the largest in-person gathering of women podcasters, audio content creators and storytellers. . Hold on to your underwear – because this episode is OUT OF CONTROL! Holly and Jess reminisce about being besties since their days at summer camp (Jew Camp, as Jessica likes to call it). She is a dear friend and a past guest and friend of our Podcast, and Holly has been threatening to go to her house and clean out her closet FOR YEARS. . And, hot damn, if Holly did not do just that for 72 hours. She is here today to report that 23 bags full of shit are now gone. In her defense, Jess's husband and mother-in-law jumped on the clean-out train, so they added to those piles. But Holly is so proud of them - they were all drinking the Kool-Aid - and there wasn't even any crying! . Jessica asks a shit-ton of great questions about how to avoid the dreaded Crimes of Fashion, and Holly shares some of her deepest, darkest secrets on how proper styling, fit, and selection can make a world of difference in your confidence – AND – she tells us how to make style decisions easy - and perfect - just for you, every day. . Should Jessica keep her Chicken Purse? It was a hard decision, because it was next to a pile of scarves, next to a huge, pink bin full of purses, which Holly threw out because they were little sequin, tchotchke, furry, weirdly handled cigar box purses. How about the hospital plastic take-home bag full of unmatched socks (that have been sitting in Jess's closest for FIVE YEARS)? Perhaps her T-shirt collection should be divided into SLEEPING SHIRTS and GOING OUTSIDE SHIRTS? Because she wears them for both. How many body types are there? Three? Six? A Million? And which one do we want? What is a bra fitting? Who needs one (Jess knows her own damn boobs, thank you)? Why do we need them? When and where do we get them? WTF? And then, in the middle of this shit show, Holly finds a legit fab designer for Jessica who – GET THIS – went to their Jew Summer Camp! OMFG. We. Can. Not. At one point, Jessica's husband gets involved, because he has OCD, and cleaning up shit turns him on. So, he started getting hot under the unders, and … bleep, bleep, censored, censored. Jessica has a load of wigs in her closet to deal with. She had a Mohawk once that she needed to fix, yada, yada. Try to keep up, it's ridiculous. And, Accessories! Neck fans purchased on Facebook because you are menopausal are not accessories. Stylish glasses that fit your face and classic costume jewelry mixed with your fine pieces are your jam! . Holly literally clears the crap, opens up Jessica's space for positive energy, and leaves her with all the confidence in the world before she stands on stage to welcomes the podcast world to She Podcast LIVE in Scottsdale, AZ in Oct. . She is gonna rock it! ' So, what's in YOUR closet? Are you ready for a fresh start? And I picked out a comfortable, stylish outfit in under 30 seconds - and in fact - I had several to choose from. The miracle of that is that none of those outfits are pajamas.“ - Jessica Kupferman . “And I'll say it again, not every day is going to be a home run. But why not set yourself up for success? Jessica has this big event coming up, which I have dressed her for. She's got plenty of things to wear, and she has realized that she has over-shopped. Not a big deal. We know that now. So we got rid of the worst, and we're keeping the best of the best.” - Holly Katz

Should you advertise on podcasts? On this episode of Rhodes to Success, I chat with Jessica Kupferman, owner of the JKM Agency. We talk about what podcasting agents do, the costs of advertising, live reads, what stats to ask for, call to action, exclusivity, and when to expect results. Main Questions Asked: How do you make sure the podcaster doing the live read is doing your business justice? Is it appropriate to ask people for their download numbers when considering advertising on a show? How do you ensure the podcaster is doing everything they promised? What does an agent do? What kind of call to action should the ad read have? How long do I have to wait until I see results of advertising on podcasts? Should I want to be the only sponsor on a podcast with exclusivity in mind? What success stories have you heard? Key Points: Content Marketing Getting interviewed on podcasts is a great way to grow your business. Content marketing strategy is where you put out free and actionable content people can use and implement in their business. This attracts people, as they want to ‘hang' with you and can become clients. This can include blogging, videos, podcasts, emails, and newsletters. Direct Advertising This is advertising your services and products with the goal of getting people to buy. As a business owner, start thinking about advertising on podcasts. Advertising on Podcasts Who is your audience, and where do they hang out? How much can you afford? A $500 per month show has 7-10K downloads per month. If you don't want to babysit your ad campaign, you need an ad agency. Live Read Podcast Advertising The fear is putting your business message in someone else's hands. Provide the host with live read copy points. It's okay to ask someone their download numbers if you are considering advertising on their show. What Stats to Ask For Audience. Downloads per month. Downloads per episode. Social media community reach (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Email). Call to Action If the purpose is to get more sales, you need to mention the product, price, and coupon code. If it is brand awareness, a text call to action is effective. How Long Until I See Results 70% of people are not in front of their computer when they are listening to a podcast. The key to results is repetition. The advert needs to be played 3-5 in a row. 12 is a good campaign. Exclusivity It's okay to be one of a few, unless what you are offering is the same as the other advertisers on the show. At the most, podcasters aim for 4 adverts per show. Top 11 Takeaways From Podcast Movement 2014 Podcast Movement 2014 was held in Dallas, Texas August 16th & 17th. For an inaugural event, PM14 was well run and full of great information. The guys did an amazing job putting it together. Earlier this year, Dan Franks reached out to me and asked if I would present a session at PM14. I was truly honored. My session on the power of storytelling went over very well. Many people came to the stage after my session to tell me how useful they found the information. I really appreciated the feedback. I am already looking forward to Podcast Movement 2015 in Fort Worth, Texas. My notebook filled with great notes from PM14. On this episode, I want to share with you my 11 top takeaways from the event. I hope these spark a little something in your to move your podcast forward and transform your content. 1. Have a plan to make money. This came from Chris Brogan's Keynote “Podcasting As A Business Driver”. If you want to support your habit/hobby, have a plan to generate income. This could be from your product, service or other income stream. Figure out how to cover your cost at a minimum. 2. Copy = Pale Imitation = Ignored. Srinivas Rao offered this insight in his Keynote “Genuine Curiosity – The Fuel Behind The Fire”. Chris Brogan said, “No one ever won a race looking sideways.” Be brave and have the courage to be unique. Tell some great stories. 3. What is your brand personality? Who are you really and who do your clients need you to be? Kristin Thompson asked these questions during her session “Rock Your Talk & Profit Big … Beyond The Podcast”. Define your brand personality. Then, thread it through everything you do. 4. Don't use white in your logo. This was mentioned during “Top Podcasters Share Three Success Secrets For Podcasting”. It was a panel discussion with Michael Stelzner, Cliff Ravenscraft, and Chris Brogan. If you want it to stand out in iTunes store, get rid of the white. Make your logo pop. 5. Involve others. During his session “10 Ways to Take Your Podcast From Average To Amazing”, Daniel J. Lewis suggested you use interviews, conversations, and shared presentations to get others involved with your show. Empower your audience to share your content. Delegate others to help you achieve tasks. 6. #1 goal of podcast marketing is opt-in. Tim Paige mentioned this in his session “The Top 7 Ways To Grow Your Podcast And Turn Listeners Into Leads”. We've heard it many times that the money is in the list. Use your podcast to grow your list every opportunity that you get. 7. Think of your avatar in the car or excercising. What can you provide to make the experience better? This was a great piece of advice from Jaime Tardy during her Keynote “The Future Of Podcasting”. If you want to connect and engage with your audience, put yourself in their shoes. 8. Learn what the knobs do. To learn your equipment and what it does, press record and narrate your actions as you turn knobs. Hear how it sounds. This was a tip offered by Dave Jackson in his session “The Art Of Editing Audio – Finding The Diamond In The Rough”. What better way to figure out what all of those knobs do other than tinkering with it. 9. Ask your tribe questions about what they struggle with. Jessica Kupferman's session was titled “Your Commmunity Of Kindred Spirits: Why, How and When To Build One”. She offered this tidbit while helping us discover the power and connection of a community. 10. Give your guests resources to promote your show after they are on. This came during a panel discussion called “Promote Your Podcast The Right (And Unique) Way”. If you want your guests to promote your show after they appear, make it easy for them. Give them graphics, quotes or audio clips they can use to help spread the word. 11. Comfort and awesome usually do not overlap. I loved this line. It was another from Chris Brogan during his Keynote “Podcasting As A Business Driver”. Be brave. Try something new. Be unique. Have the courage to step out and tell personal stories that cannot be copied. That's when you'll get noticed. Don't be comforable. Be awesome. I'd love to help you with your podcast. E-mail any questions or comments you might have to Coach@PodcastTalentCoach.com. You can also find other tools including worksheets, a workbook and videos to help you create great content at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com. Let's turn your information into engaging entertainment.
Today's show features entrepreneur Jessica Kupferman, podcast, mom, funny lady…and word of warning - we always have a ton of fun together, interrupt each other and generally like to make a joke if things get too serious. She's obsessed with podcasting and sharing why your business needs a podcast... and specifically why more women need to do podcasts! Here's what goes down: Jessica shares how she produces two shows per week (maybe more by the time this goes live!). An impromptu brainstorm how to make the content workflow easier. I also share my results with the podcast + she gives me a few tips. How to be an introvert and still manage to talk to people all day long. Find out what's changed in her business over a full year of podcasting. Why podcasting is so cool for building an audience of people you don't know already! Why we need more women podcasters!! And you'll hear Jessica go off on delegating, being interviewed, and helping me create the officially first NON-CLEAN interview, so grab your headphones for this one.
