Elsie Escobar is, without question, one of the pioneers of podcasting. All the way back in 2006, she started one of the original yoga podcasts: Elsie's Yoga Class, which garnered 4 million downloads in its lifetime. She stuck with it until 2013, when she joined Libsyn, and she's been co-hosting their official podcast The Feed ever since. She also happens to be the first Latina ever inducted into the Academy of Podcasters' Hall of Fame. That's about as fruitful of a career as any podcaster could hope for, but like most of us, Elsie had another life before embracing the world of online audio. She pivoted from her Hollywood acting career after growing tired of feeling tokenized, thinking podcasting might finally let her stretch her creative legs - and boy, did it ever - but of course, not without a struggle. Getting into podcasting is hard enough today, even with the massive online infrastructure and endless number of tools & resources we have access to. Can you imagine how daunting it must have been in 2006? And yet, Elsie endured, and has an Everest-sized mountain of successes to show for it.As someone who's been around since the dawn of podcasting, and has seen just about every evolution the medium has gone through, Elsie brought an incredible (and very rare) perspective to the show. Between her thoughts on things like monetization, adapting to new platforms, adding a video component, the importance of promos, and the future of the industry, anyone looking to make a living in this business will no doubt find something incredibly valuable in this episode.Elsie is also the co-founder and co-host of She Podcasts, the largest online community for women and non binary podcasters on Facebook with over 20,000 members. She continues to make the podcasting space safer and more connected every day, and even shares her future plans to create a better ecosystem for her audience.A Transcript and video of the show is available on our network page. Please sign up for the SOUNDING OFF Newsletter. It's a horror show, kids, at least it was around the beautiful Sonic Bloom Awards banquet table during the She Podcasts Unplugged! event in concert with PodFest 2024. And yet, despite the unsolicited (geriatric) pick up lines, latent latex balloon smell and traumatic special-effect makeup photos, the most exciting thing we saw at this year's extraordinary event was how to optimize your podcast workflow using artificial intelligence. Honestly, you think we would have investigated this option sooner given how strained our biological intelligence has been lately. Bah DAH cha! Seriously, Dear Listener. For this episode, we tasked AI with the challenge of writing 5 sample titles with accompanying 100 word blurbs for use as show notes. Here is, word for word, what the computer spit out: The Worst Pickup Lines (and Other Orlando Mishaps) Melissa and Amy recap their eventful trip to a women in podcasting conference, which included being subjected to cringeworthy pickup lines from older men at the hotel bar. They also share hilarious stories of laughter-induced urination, getting accosted with graphic images, and the overall quirky escapades of their "velveteen rabbity" Orlando getaway. Holding in Laughter and Pee: Our Crazy Orlando Trip Through uncontrollable laughter, Melissa and Amy recount wetting themselves numerous times during their women in podcasting conference in Orlando. From horrifying bathroom smells to inappropriate overshares from strangers to questionable travel snafus, their eventful trip offered plenty of comedic fodder, despite the lackluster hotel amenities and odd mishmash of conference attendees. The Time We Peed Our Pants Laughing in Orlando Melissa and Amy recap the nonstop hilarity during their women's podcasting conference trip to Orlando, from getting hit on by overly confident men at bars to a stranger ambushing them with graphic images. Their days were filled with laughing so hard they peed their pants, yelling at people out of fear, and enjoying each other's company amidst the quirky escapades. Strange Pickup Lines and Public Peeing: Our Orlando Adventure During their women's podcasting conference getaway, Melissa and Amy were in stitches recounting ridiculous pickup attempts from men at hotel bars along with uncontrollably laughing until they wet themselves...in public! From horrifying bathroom smells to graphic photo ambushes, their overnight trip was filled with hilarious mishaps and lots of laughter. One Wild and Crazy Orlando Trip Melissa and Amy recap their eventful Orlando trip chock-full of laughter, escapades and hijinks - from cringeworthy pickup lines from men to uncontrollable giggling that led to public peeing. Despite a questionable hotel stay and odd conference attendees, they made the most of it, supporting their friend and enjoying time together, even if it meant getting ambushed by a stranger's graphic images! And if you think that's cool, consider telling a friend about our show. You can find us on all the socials at @ListenBrilliant, or on your preferred podcast player as Brilliant Observations Podcast. Closing out our season 4 with Elsie Escobar from She Podcast and Libsyn's "The Feed" podcast! Elsie is a podcasting pioneer with 17 plus years as a podcaster, El Salvadoran immigrant, Co-Founder of She Podcasts with 20K members and the Director of Community and Content at Libsyn- a hosting, distribution, and monetization podcasting platform. However, she did not start out in podcasting, it came to her after being denied multiple times in Hollywood for not looking like what should be a “traditional stereotypical Latina.” Why are we deemed to all look like Jo-Lo, Selma Hayek or a ganster chola, with various degrees of accents in Hollywood! This is the lens we are still perceived in throughout many roles in our careers or have encountered here in the US, whether you're an immigrant, 1st Gen, 2nd Gen or a 3rd generation Californian-Aztlan Mexican American, like myself. Podcasting has accelerated tremendously with the influx of technology, specifically for our community narratives and the technology that is leveraging our voices. We break down the numbers, within the Latino community of listening and to recognize the opportunity to invest in our platforms. The Latino Edison Podcasting Report shows the data, and all the receipts of what our community is listening to our podcasting. Podcasting is leveraging many voices and narratives, but it's our own narratives, not AI, as an uninterrupted 1:1 dialoge. As Elise states in this podcast, “it's unbelievably freeing to me, to not be judged by who I DON'T look like.” More POC/women of color podcasting and our LGTBQ+ communities are moving into podcasting, to share HerStories, our ancestral narratives, and our legacy that will not be erased by AI, but will give power to new and stronger generations. If the universe doesn't magically create a space that's meant for you (because it won't), you create it yourself. That's exactly what Jessica Kupferman did when she and co-founder Elsie Escobar started She podcasts back in 2013 and 2014. After noticing that a lot of podcasters were men and “gurus” who were just interviewing one another, they decided they wanted to do something different. Fast forward to today, Jessica and She Podcasts is still growing, hosting an active Facebook group, live conferences, a coaching program, a new 501(c)3, and a host of other ventures. This was such a fun conversation about living up to our parents' (and society's) expectations, gaining visibility online, attending in-person conferences, making a space for yourself, why nothing has to be perfect, and so much more. Are there podcast laws? If so, who writes them? And what do they regulate? In this episode, I chat with the Podcast Lawyer about what podcast laws exist, which ones don't, and how to navigate the legal implications of podcast guesting and hosting. Why now? Well, on the previous episode of Go Pitch Yourself, I talked about the pay-to-play phenomenon where podcast hosts are charging their guests. Are there laws governing this type of relationship? And are hosts required to disclose that relationship? Not to fear, Gordon Firemark is here to answer all of these questions, and more. Gordon has practiced media, entertainment, and business law since 1992 and is often referred to as The Podcast Lawyer™. He helps creatives, artists, entrepreneurs, and others achieve the dream of getting their messages out and making a meaningful impact with their craft. A podcaster himself, he's been producing and hosting the Entertainment Law Update podcast since 2009 and recently launched the Fuzzy Lawgic podcast with Elsie Escobar, where they navigate the legal, social, and ethical questions facing creators today. Together we talk about disclosure guidelines, contracts to have in place when podcasting, and other legal considerations for hosts and guests. Topics covered include: Gordon's background in entertainment law and why he saw that the rules were different when podcasts started to emerge What Gordon has seen and is seeing with regards to podcast guests having to 'pay to play' The audience's need for transparency when podcast guesting slides into paid advertising Things that hosts should bear in mind when beginning a podcast, and how these can help you to avoid 'podfade' Do hosts and guests need a podcast prenup when arranging guest appearances? Full show notes and resources: https://www.thepodwizegroup.com/podcast-laws

This week: Apple's funding podcasts, brand safety tech continues to divide advertisers, what more can and should ad agencies do to support journalism, Edison's Latino Podcast Report, and Spotify bundles Chartable and Podsights access for Megaphone users Apple Ramps Up Its In-House Podcasting Efforts with Studio Deal Manuela: Rumors of Apple getting into podcasting bore fruit last week with official confirmation. At least, sort of. Ashley Carman and Lucas Shaw's Bloomberg piece from last Wednesday explains: “The investments have been led by Apple's TV studio, rather than its podcast division. Despite being one of the biggest distributors of audio in the world, the company's podcasting unit has avoided funding individual shows or buying networks because it wants to be seen as a neutral platform.” That TV division has entered into a deal with Futuro Studios to fund the creation of podcasts while Apple retains first-look rights on film and TV adaptations. In essence, the deal creates a pilot-factory for Apple to generate new IP and test them in the world of podcasting before graduating to the more expensive filmed version. “Apple hasn't pumped nearly as much money into original podcasts as Amazon and Spotify Technology SA, which have each spent more than $1 billion acquiring companies and programming. Spotify, Apple's rival in music streaming, has made some of the most popular podcasts in the world exclusive to its service and thus unavailable to the competition.” Podcasting is becoming a relatively affordable testing ground for IP instead of fully committing to a TV pilot, along with the added bonus of any successful IP getting a built-in audience of fans before the first day of shooting. Successful shows like Netflix's Dirty John adaptation are proving the method can work and work well. ‘A key impediment': Brand safety tech continues to divide advertisers into haves and have-nots Shreya: This Monday Seb Joseph of Digiday posted an article detailing the growing divide in how advertisers handle being posted to news sites when big, predominantly negative stories break. Nobody wants to be the next viral sensation getting roasted worse than Mr. Peanut when Planters' ad campaign temporarily killing their mascot coincided with the death of Kobe Bryant. In a world full of dangerous news cycles, brand safety tech companies like Integral Ad Science are able to impart more granular control over what content is considered brand-safe in a timely manner. “Then there are those marketers who don't use the technology. Take British newspaper group Reach plc, for example, which has said the war in Ukraine significantly dampened advertiser demand. This won't surprise anyone. The truth is the downside is too steep and the upside too obscure for many marketers to do anything but avoid the polarizing news. That said, not every marketer sees it this way. And if they could afford to, they would advertise on news sites — just in a more nuanced manner.” An unintended side effect of advertisers deciding what topics are acceptable to block ads on is that some of the biggest news stories are also cutting off some of the potentially best-written journalism of the moment. Joseph quotes Zefr EVP of Strategy and Marketing: “We actually don't accept or use keyword blocklists as a policy in our company, because they end up causing the same damage to over-blocking quality voices over and over again and they just don't work well in UGC environments. We instead apply the GARM [Global Alliance of Responsible Media] models for debated sensitive social issues as a way to keep brands in front of suitable content while avoiding the issues that they're concerned about.” Ad Agencies Can, and Should, Do More to Support Journalism Shreya: Between hedge fund buyouts dissolving seemingly bulletproof institutions and ad dollars drying up when negative stories drop, things are looking rough for journalists. Ricardo Baca writes an impassioned plea for ad agencies, stressing the importance of not only collaborating with journalists but also supporting them with ad buys and subscriptions. He writes from the perspective of having worked on the other side of the fence as a journalist himself years prior. “To be clear, agencies are partly to blame here. We're stuck on the same vicious treadmill as everyone else: We see the web traffic going to social media, so that's where we buy our ads, further siphoning away support from journalism, the snake eating itself. And with news outlets struggling mightily on the revenue front no matter their size—from local alt-weeklies to major metropolitan dailies—I am making a plea for agencies to step up.” Baca suggests treating relationships with journalists not as transactional, but symbiotic instead. Value their time and they will value yours. Don't hold grudges when well-researched reporting generates something the client isn't happy with. Then there's the fact that journalism has evolved beyond gumshoe reporters all working for a monolithic outlet. With more forms of professional journalism becoming the norm, so to must go the advertising support. “Keep in mind that revenue models have shifted. Consider an agency sponsorship for a Substack newsletter, for example. Sponsoring other popular media formats like podcasts, recognizing both a shift in consumers' habits as well as the continuity involved—someone's got to be paid to create the stuff—is another way to directly support the trade.” Gabe's Section Manuela: The third annual Latino Podcast Listener Report was published on Tuesday, following a webinar discussing the results presented by Gabriel Soto, my co-host on La Descarga and Senior Director at Edison Research, and Elsie Escobar, Director of Community and Content at Libsyn and co-founder of She Podcasts. Supported by Adonde Media, LWC Studios, Libsyn, PRX, and SXM Media this year's report revealed many interesting trends as well as new findings. The study finds that 59% of Latino adults have ever listened to a podcast, up from 56% since last year and up from 45% since 2020. The lack of Spanish podcast promotion was a recurring theme of the report, and an opportunity exists to bridge such content with foreign born Latinos. The report highlighted the listening gap between Latinos born outside of the U.S. and their U.S. born counterparts. 37% of Latinos born in the U.S. listened to a podcast in the last month, while 29% born outside of the U.S. say the same. A new statistic released this year revealed seventeen percent of Latino Monthly podcast listeners identify as LGBTQ+. For comparison, the report cited the Gallup poll's 2021 estimate of 11% of Latino adult population who identify as LGBTQ+ The benefit of advertising on Latino podcasts was also discussed. According to the report, 64% of monthly listeners of Latino-hosted podcasts, say they ever purchased a product or service as a result of hearing a sponsorship or advertising on a podcast, compared with 25% of those who have never listened to a podcast hosted by Latinos saying the same. . As Gabriel Soto put it, “Latinos in the U.S. control an impressive $1.9 trillion in purchasing power, and today's data demonstrate how advertisers who support Latino podcast content are benefitting, while those who don't are missing out,”. The Latino Podcast Listener Report serves as an invaluable resource to many creators in the podcast space. We're happy to see the effort continue. You can download the Latino Podcast Listener Report for free at the link in the show notes. Spotify Launches New Bundle For Megaphone Users, Adding Access To Chartable And Podsights Shreya: In an email sent yesterday, Spotify has announced they are bundling enterprise access to recently-purchased services Chartable and Podsights into Megaphone. “With this updated offering, you will be able to easily apply attribution measurement to showcase the value of your podcast promotional efforts as well as your direct sales campaigns. All Megaphone clients will now be able to obtain unique insights about their podcast audience while also measuring the audience growth impact of their promotional campaigns through tools like Chartable SmartPromos and SmartLinks.” Attribution and growth marketing are the major focus in the world of podcast adtech. One of the largest enterprise-focused hosting platforms acquiring two of the top attribution and analytics solutions and offering them for free to existing users is a big deal budget-wise. Though it is worth noting there are strings attached: they're free for the first four million impressions. Since the big Spotify purchase of Podsights and Chartable there's been a massive hole for third party attribution. Companies like Claritas, Veritonic, and Artsai who've started to take on that challenge have had an uphill battle. Both Podsights and Chartable are great pieces of tech, but first-party is not neutral. Offers like this will make it even harder to extract them from their hold on the space and jeopardizes third party measurements value in podcasting. A good deal, but one to keep in mind when considering the future of podcasting as an industry. This week on The Download: New TikTok Trademark Could mean new streaming service, third-party cookies get a stay of execution from Google, Apple App Store ads could signal Apple Podcasts' future, and two perspectives on the downturn ad economy. New TikTok App Trademark Manuela: Last Thursday Dan Whateley and Amanda Perelli, writing for Business Insider, covered a new trademark application for a service called TikTok Music. As the simplistic name suggests, TikTok parent company ByteDance could be looking to branch the TikTok brand out beyond its current relationship to music and create a fully-fledged streaming platform. “The idea that ByteDance would launch a standalone "TikTok Music" streaming service in the US to compete with players like Spotify and Apple Music isn't unfounded. It already runs a streaming app called Resso in three markets — India, Brazil, and Indonesia — that has been grabbing market share from other streamers in the past year.” While nothing has been formally announced or set in stone, the sources Perelli and Whateley contacted for their story suggest it's highly unlikely ByteDance would file such a trademark. Filing in the US and Australia wouldn't happen without a strong chance the company meant for it to come to fruition. Then there's the matter of this move making perfect sense for TikTok. Why cover this on The Download? Well, in addition to the general fact TikTok is slowly devouring the online world, it's coming for audio specifically and the trademark application lists, among other things, the proposed new app's ability to stream: “downloadable mobile applications providing podcast and radio broadcast content.” What remains to be seen is what the TikTok version of ‘a podcast' will be. Google Delays Cookie Death Again Shreya: Once again we won't be seeing the death of third-party cookies, as Google has delayed their death blow for another year. Last Wednesday The Verge's Richard Lawler covered the story in the article “Google delays blocking third-party cookies again, now targeting late 2024.” “The plan is to expand the group of Chrome users who have Privacy Sandbox APIs enabled to “millions of users globally” starting in August, then gradually opt more people in throughout the rest of the year and into 2023, giving the publishers and developers of these sites time to find out how the technology works before the APIs are “generally available” by Q3 of 2023.” With this second delay third-party cookies are becoming the shoe that refuses to drop in advertising. While podcasting doesn't depend on cookies per se, the ability to track individual consumers remains an expectation of digital marketers who don't want to see the genie go back into the bottle. If it does, podcasts are on equal footing with mobile and web ads, and all will have to do the work to target the right consumers. Apple App Store Ad Offerings Signal Podcast Future Manuela: This Tuesday's issue of Stratechery covers many sections of the Apple earnings call, but one particular section stuck out to The Download: Apple's new advertising slots. The new slots are detailed by 9to5Mac's Chance Miller. “Apple is expanding its advertising business and adding two new ad slots to the App Store. Currently, the App Store has two ad slots: one on the main ‘Search' tab and one in the Search results. The two new App Store ads announced today will bring advertisements to the App Store ‘Today' homepage, as well as to individual app pages.” While the App Store and Apple Podcasts are different services, this change could signal a shift in the winds over in the podcasting world. Currently there are no ads in Apple Podcasts. Apple also puts considerable time into featuring podcasts in places ads would normally appear at no charge. Years of careful curation and optimal placement have caused those spots to become incredibly coveted. By making some of those spaces available for purchase - through search or the home page, or even on pages for OTHER podcasts - Apple would unlock a large revenue opportunity for themselves outside of subscriptions, and provide a new for-pay opportunity for podcast promotion. Ad Economy Downturn Dual Perspectives Shreya: On Monday Digiday's Seb Joseph posted “The downturn ad economy: A tale of two narratives.” “There are two competing narratives on advertising at the moment. They sit uneasily with each other. But both are correct. Ad dollars are being spent, but they're also being cut. Yes, these two things can be true at the same time. No, the latter perspective doesn't make the former any less valid or vice versa. Really, it's a matter of perspective.” The two warring perspectives in Joseph's piece are that of the big holding companies and agencies versus the platforms. Both are staring down the barrel of a recession and have different reactions. “It's no surprise that the marketers who can afford to advertise now are trying to make the most of it. They're spending ad dollars, rather than looking to pull them. Indeed, economic slumps are usually the best chance to buy share of voice cheaply at the same time rivals reduce their own. It's a cliche for a reason. Otherwise, Unilever wouldn't have splurged £169.73 million ($206.7 million) on advertising in the first half of the year alone. Coca-Cola did so mething similar, as did McDonald's. The largest advertisers will try and advertise their way through the downturn — to a point, at least.” Podcasting is platform-heavy, working diligently to get the big advertisers to shift their spending into podcasting. Yet those platform peers are the ones getting the short end of the stick when it comes to ad cuts. “To survive, companies are cutting costs, including advertising. When these companies advertise, they tend to do so online first and foremost. SMEs and DTCs are nothing but digital-first in many respects. So when these businesses feel the effects of adverse conditions, so do the platforms they advertise on.” When those in the podcasting industry talk about the push for bigger advertisers in our space, it's not only for growth: it's to weather the storm. If some of those spend-through-the-storm big fish can be directed to our corner of the world, they'll keep multiple industries afloat. Quick Hits Section Manuela: Finally, it's time for our semi-regular roundup of articles we're calling Quick Hits. Apple announces the launch of Podcasts Delegated Delivery later this year and the retirement of the iPod, a Women's Podcast Festival in the UK, Elsie is interviewed by Pod Chat and will be at PODWORK and much more! On Monday, May 16, Apple announced: Apple Podcasts Delegated Delivery in Partnership with Libsyn slated for launch later this year. This partnership will provide easier submission of new shows (and premium content) to Apple Podcasts from participating podcast hosts. Apple Podcast Delegated Delivery is a new feature that will allow creators to upload, manage, and distribute their premium audio through participating third-party hosting providers. 2 Lives - Storytelling Podcast about the moments that transform us. “We all have 2 Lives. The second begins the moment we realize we have only one.” 2 Lives is written and hosted by Laurel Morales, story edited by Camila Kerwin of the Rough Cut Collective. Halle Hewitt is our new assistant producer. Annie Gerway is our illustrator and web designer. Music from Blue Dot Sessions. Become a 2 Lives patron at https://www.patreon.com/2lives Drop us a note on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. You can learn how to support the show here. Episode transcripts are posted on the website. Over the past few months I've been a bit stressed trying to get 2 Lives episodes in the feed every week. The podcast started out as a passion project. One in which I gave myself space between seasons to find amazing storytellers and write and produce and honor their stories. Then someone told me I have to put a show out every week in order to hold onto listeners, and get the download numbers I need to get sponsors. So I latched onto this idea like a dog with his favorite chew toy, even brought on an assistant producer to try to make that process more efficient. While she has been incredible, I still find myself working nights and weekends and waking up in a panic thinking about what I need to do to get the next episode into your ears. Thanks to some sage advice from a mentor, Elsie Escobar with She Podcasts. I've decided to change the schedule again and have an episode for you every other week. I want to honor the storytellers – the people who are brave enough to share their most vulnerable moments. I also want to honor your time with the best story we can produce.

Daunted by starting your first podcast? Trust me, it's much easier than when I entered the scene. The world of podcasting used to be super bro-ey and technical. So-called “gurus” made you feel like you had to build an entire studio in your basement and buy special mixers just to get your message out. All of that changed with She Podcasts, the now 21,000-member strong online community and live event supporting podcasters from all walks of life on their journey. Meet my dear friends and the founders — Jessica Kupferman & Elsie Escobar — in this week's episode. In this episode of the podcast, we talk about: Elsie and Jessica's entrepreneurial journey from Facebook group to 21,000-member community and live event One of the biggest factors behind their Facebook group's 60% leap in growth since 2018 Jessica and Elsie's secret to building iron-clad trust with their Facebook group and fans The magnetic power of "doing the right thing" Factors to consider before monetizing your thriving online community What you can learn from them about maintaining a healthy business partnership Making people feel seen and heard vs taking your podcast to the "next level" Finding connection with fellow podcasters with completely different lifestyles, interests, and areas of expertise Where the women behind She Podcasts see social media going in the next couple years The pressure to constantly "be on" with social media and how Elsie protects her peace …and more! Try them out for yourself today: https://onlinedrea.com/sendible About the Guests Jessica Kupferman started her podcast to see if she could grow her online business. Someone invited her on a podcast and instantly she was hooked. She wanted to be a guest on more, but when she took a look at business shows, she found that they were a lot of “young, white dudes interviewing other young, white dudes.” Exasperated, she started her first podcast and instantly gravitated to other women who were also podcasting then. After attending a conference, she started a Facebook group called “Women Who Podcast” and added the other amazing women podcasters she spent time with, including Elsie Escobar. Little did she know that Elsie was a podcasting veteran who knew TONS of women who wanted to join the group, and she had been thinking about starting a women's podcasting group. To make a long story short, Elsie had some amazing ideas, Jess was great at helping them come to life. Together they are dedicated to helping women overcome whatever obstacles stand in their way in order to be able to express themselves, specifically through the medium of podcasting. If you are a woman in this podcasting space and you don't know who Elsie Escobar is SHAME ONE YOU! Elsie humbly says she is a podcasting advocate, pundit and mentor to primarily women podcaster leaders. She has a driving dialogue in the podcasting industry focusing on podcasts' impact on society, and culture as well as their power to drive social change. She is definitely all these things but this does not do her justice so we are going to brag on behalf of her! Elsie is one half of the podcast, She Podcasts, inductee to the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame, Community Manager and Podcaster Relations for our favorite podcast hosting station Libsyn and if that isn't enough....she is an actress credited in movies such as Orange County and Pumpkin! In this episode, I talk about my latest adventures in podcasting and share what you need to think about when preparing your episodes. Gastronostalgia is going well, we've recorded our weekly episodes until mid January 2022, which is such a great (and unusual) feeling! We also released our first episode with a "full menu". We've incorporated an "apperitif", as listeners (mainly our friends) were requesting more content! When we listen to a podcast, if we don't know the hosts, it helps us feel like we know them; and if we know they hosts, it helps us feel like we're with them. Putting this together made me realise how unorganised I've been with the labelling of audio files and folders. Even if you're at the beginning of your podcasting adventure and don't have much material yet, it pays off to get organised for when the show continues to grow. Gastronostalgia has helped me capture the joy of podcasting; having a conversation with friends, that you share with others. Even if your show is for your business, it's worth capturing that joy, the joy of creating your own show where you can share what you are up to with the world. As the Gastro podcast is hosted on Anchor, where you can include polls and questions for the audience, but do listeners know that feature is there? Another thing to look out for with Anchor is that you can't have more than one show per account, and you can't grab the embed code for each episode when you schedule it, you have to wait until it's published. 10.51 If you are in love with podcasts and podcasting, you must listen to this episode from Buzzcast, 6 Aug 2021 The Life-Changing Power of Podcasts with Elsie Escobar. Elise is a podcast veteran and a very strong advocate for the medium - she's been doing it for ages! She talks about how listening to podcasts made her feel like she was connecting with people who were nothing like herself. Adventures in Podcasting is changing the schedule!I will publish an episode every two weeks, while I pay some attention to the business side. I now have help to build the social media, and the website. I'm also in danger of overpodcasting, I have a lot of recording waiting for editing, and the audio is just piling up!Plus, the bad posture when using the mouse or writing by hand means that I've hurt my right shoulder - although the pain went during recording with a friend. 16.20 Preparing for your recordingPreparation starts right at the beginning of your idea generation phase. Some podcasters love to plan everything in advance, others start working on the individual episodes, one by one. If you're recording with someone else, you might want to use:Calendly OnceHubDoodle For more resources, check out the Resources page.20.10Creating guidelines for your guests. Don't spend too much time on making these pretty, as Pilar has seen some new podcasters create amazing PDF for their guests... but the show never gets off the ground. You might want to include things like wear headphones, switch off If you're thinking of starting your own podcasting adventure, I recommend Buzzsprout as host - click here for my affiliate link, which also gets you a little discount, and Riverside FM for recording, which you can access through this other affiliate link.
In this podcast episode, I'm speaking to three other podcast hosts about what they've experienced in changing up their shows. I'm super honored to have each of them join me, and I deeply admire them as outstanding podcasters with remarkable shows. I'm speaking to Liz Applegate, Andrea Owen, and Elsie Escobar about what they've experienced in changing up their podcasts. We're covering: Changing up your show with a mini series Liz Applegate of Midlife Schmidlife joins to talk about how she decided to do a mini-series after she'd stepped away from her podcast for about a year. She had played with the ideas of starting a new show, and decided to simplify and do the easiest thing: keep the show name, the intro/outro, the music and the cover art and just add in a new topic that was speaking to her in the moment. The result was that she rekindled her joy of podcasting and has decided to jump back in with her show, with new episodes scheduled to come out in October 2021. Liz Applegate's Podcast, Website, and Community When to consider changing the name of your podcast Andrea Owen is well known for her delightful show, "Your Kick-Ass Life." She loved the name, and also eventually wrote a book with the same title. A few years passed and she felt that she needed a new name: for her show, her business, and for another book that's just come out, too. She decided to change it all over to "Make Some Noise" to reflect the new direction and branding she chose. She loves this new name and is excited about moving forward with it. Andrea Owen's Podcast, Website, and new book (Make Some Noise) Listen to Andrea's discussion on Jump Start Your Joy Should you start a second show? I started podcasting with one show: Jump Start Your Joy. It's been lovely, AND since I started I have also changed my career to being a podcast producer. There were topics that I wanted to cover that did not really fit into the first show. I took a long time considering how I wanted to address my new passion, and decided that it was with a new show. What happens when it's time to end a show? Elsie Escobar of She Podcasts and Libsyn started her podcasting journey with a show about Yoga: Elsie's Yoga Class. Her website and branding was all focused on "Yogeek." After several years, she decided to retire that brand. She has also stopped creating new episodes for her yoga class show - and she talks about what happens when you embrace change. And even though it may be uncomfortable to let go of something you've created for several years, change is inevitable. Read the full episode notes on my site. International Podcast Day We are a day late for our contribution to the International Podcast Day - September 30, 2018. Oh well, better a day late than never, right? I, Marianne, spend the day at the Outlier Podcast Festival in LA. I was fortunate to meet some of my podcasting heroes and attend the panels from two outstanding fellow E-Leaguers Ginger Wiseman and Katie Ward. Ginger is host and producer of the Outlander Podcast and if you like romance, history, alternative medicine, time travel, and more, you are going to love the podcast. https://www.outlanderpod.com/ Katie Ward is a feminist with an incredible social consciousness and gets very excited about many topics. Find her at the aptly named The Enthusiasm Enthusiast on any podcatcher or on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/TheEnthusiasmEnthusiast/ Other Topics: some info on upcoming episodes update on personal health Homestead update the big declutter project If you are a female podcaster and want to up your game, I highly recommend joining the E-League with Elsie Escobar. The next session is starting on October 15th. http://elsieescobar.com/the-e-league If you sign up and mention my name, Marianne West, I will get a discount during my own tuition and will be very grateful.

I feel like I've been bleeding money this summer I'm at that place in my business where I know that if I'm going to grow, and create the life and the business I envision, I've got to start investing in myself. Let me be real honest here for a sec, it scares the sh*t outta me. I haven't made this kind of investment in equipment and self development since I left my corporate day job behind to start my own business. The hardest investment trigger to pull was the investment in myself. Why is that so hard? I don't think I'm the only one that struggles with this. Can I get an Amen? You can tweet it to me @brassybroadjen. What Happened When I Invested in Myself Joining the E-League was definitely the best investment I made this year. This was investing in myself because I want to take my podcasting to the next level. The E-League was started by Elsie Escobar. The E-league included an intense one on one Come to Jesus or in this case Come to Elsie coaching session. I identified some areas I specifically wanted help with in improving, and the she expanded upon those. It wasn't generic stuff. It was a a deep dive with specifics on what I could improve. That alone was worth the price of admission. A Community of #WorldClassPodcasters But wait….there's more…… The bonus gift in all of this was the community that has developed with the other women that also joined the E-League. I now have a community of World Class Podcaster friends scattered around the world! These women are my go to when I want to try out some crazy new idea, get feedback, or maybe just vent a little about my latest podcasting frustration. These are women that are creating and doing the work every day. They are my people. My willingness to invest in myself led me to this community. If you're thinking about investing in some kind of self development, do it. Give yourself every opportunity to get yourself to the next level. Invest in yourself. You're worth it. In My Ears In my ears this week has been the latest installment of Hardcore History from Dan Carlin. It's a commitment. This episode is coming in at about 6 hours. Dan Carlin has the ability to suck me into historical events that I didn't even know existed, and that I was interested in learning about. This dude has a gift for sharing history and keeping me tuned in.

If you're a podcaster or an aspiring podcaster, I can't recommend Libsyn enough for hosting. And when Elsie Escobar, from Libsyn's The Feed and She Podcasts, reached out and suggested I do an episode on this topic, of course I jumped at the chance. Plus, her question piqued my own curiosity in the quasi-holiday we celebrate today. Because I'm releasing this episode separate from my regular episode schedule, this is a reminder to subscribe to The Story Behind on your favorite podcast app so when I do release special episodes, you'll be sure to get them as soon as they come out. I'm your host, Emily Prokop, and this is The Story Behind April Fool's Day. Check out #PodernFamily on Twitter to find other great indie podcasts like this one.
