This episode of the podcast is an interview with the lovely Phylecia Jones who is a speaking expert. We talk all about speaking during the current climate and how the industry may look post-pandemic, finding your audience through speaking and the importance of being a speaker in your industry. KEY TAKEAWAYS COVERED IN THE PODCASTSpeaking is the best way to show authority inside your business – you are the instant expert. Speaking allows you to go from 1:1 conversations to 1 to many. Speaking gives you credibility and you can show off your speaking gigs on your website. You can learn to become a better speaker, but speaking on stage is not meant for everyone. Full-time speakers had to pivot when the pandemic hit when they could no longer speak on stage. Speaking online is not the same as speaking at real-life events – you have to adapt. If you pre-record a talk for an online event – repurpose that content and create a new online course. Now is still a good time to get into speaking – there are plenty of opportunities out there. Keep applying for events – they may switch in-person events to hybrid or online. Even in the current climate, there is a lot of opportunities for us as speakers to market our business. Switch your mindset – frame it as a webinar and present it differently. 2021 is the year to get everything together – update your equipment, revamp your topics (make them relevant), update your website. Now is the time to refresh – next year there will be companies with budgets and a lot of people wanting the in-person experience. Right now, you have to be flexible as we don't know if events will go ahead/be taken online. The turnaround for speakers is also a lot shorter in the current climate – be fast and be ready. You have to make pitching a priority this year. Add photos of you speaking online and your equipment to your speaking page. Showcase you are available for virtual speaking and training. THE ONE THING YOU NEED TO REMEMBER ABOVE ALL ELSE…Make sure you are showing that you can do virtual talks and training, as well as in-person training.HIGHLIGHTS YOU SIMPLY CAN'T MISSAn introduction to Phylecia – 06:15 The importance of speaking for marketing your business – 08:15 Is speaking open to everyone? – 09:47 Being a speaker during the pandemic – 12:25 Speaking online – 16:19 Is now a terrible time to think about being a speaker? 26:01 Applying for speaking in the current climate – 33:49 Updating your speaking page for online – 37:02 Clubhouse for speakers 45:25 LINKS TO RESOURCES MENTIONED IN TODAY'S EPISODEhttps://www.phyleciajones.com/about/ (Check out Phylecia) Want the transcript-click here!

#33: 5 Lessons for Freelance Business Owners from She Podcasts Conference

Deliberate Freelancer

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 24, 2019 22:47

On today’s show I am going to outline five lessons I learned at the She Podcasts LIVE conference that are relevant to freelance business owners. She Podcasts LIVE was an inaugural conference for the She Podcasts community, which started as a Facebook group that now has 14,000 members—all women podcasters. There’s also a She Podcasts podcast hosted by co-creators Elsie Escobar and Jessica Kupferman. While I learned a bunch of podcast strategies and tips at the conference, there were also tips and reminders that can be helpful for all freelance business owners, no matter what service you provide. Lesson #1 is brought to you by Erica Mandy, host of the very successful podcast the NewsWorthy. Erica is an experienced broadcast journalist who quit her job and launched a daily 10-minute news podcast just a few years ago. In her session at She Podcasts, she offered up the The Six Cs of Success. No. 1 is confidence. Erica says you have to have the confidence that you are resourceful and that you can figure out the solutions. She posed the question: What is the traffic jam in your business? We ask this of our clients, but we should also ask it of ourselves: What is the problem you’re trying to solve? This also reminds me of the book I’m reading right now: Marie Forleo’s “Everything Is Figureoutable.” Lesson #2 was also from Erica’s list: consistency. As Erica said: You have to take it seriously when no one is looking. It takes a lot of work to work ON your business, not just IN your business. Are we doing the marketing and networking and analyzing and planning when no one is looking? Lesson #3 comes from Phylecia Jones, creator of iFind You Close, a research company that helps people find speaking gigs. During a period of time when Phylecia was trying to get more people to pay attention to her and her podcast—which was called Ask the Budgetologist—she asked herself every morning: Who needs to know my name today? Think about it: Don’t you want clients and potential clients to immediately think of you when they need a freelancer that provides the services you do? Almost all of my work is from referrals. That means people know my name. My clients think of me when they have work, but they also think to recommend me to others. Lesson #4 is a combo. It’s spend more time with LinkedIn. At the She Podcasts conference, Karen Yankovich, CEO of Uplevel Media, presented a stellar presentation on how to maximize LinkedIn. A few quick tips: Put LinkedIn on your phone and log in and save the password, so you can more quickly respond to LinkedIn outreach. If you spot a green dot on someone’s profile photo that means they are on LinkedIn now, so you should contact them no. Make sure the keywords that pop up on Your Dashboard (on your profile page) are the keywords you want to be known for. Lesson #5: Take care of yourself. I’ve mentioned before how much I love conferences but also that I’m a complete introvert. I have to prepare myself for all that networking and people time. While I loved the overall She Podcasts vibe, a few sessions started out with bold  interaction, including describing our podcasts to a stranger in a superhero voice. I implore all conference speakers and meeting planners: I know you’re looking to make conferences more interactive, but please consider introverts. If you are doing some sort of interactive thing, you need to put that in the session description and you need to say it up front when people walk in the room. Please. As for individuals, You need to take care of yourself in all situations. There’s a balance between opening yourself up to new experiences and taking care of your own needs. This may mean walking out if you are uncomfortable, saying no, skipping sessions to relax alone in your hotel room. In your business, this means structuring your business around what works best for your productivity but also your mental health. It could mean not taking calls after work hours. Not working on weekends. Saying no to a project with glaring red flags. Saying no to volunteer activities because you’re overwhelmed. Notice how a lot of these examples are simply saying no. YOU are the owner and creator of your business. YOU are in charge. You don’t want to put off the vibe that you’re desperate and will do ANYTHING for a client or to accept a project. It needs to be the right fit for YOU. So, take care of yourself.   Biz Bite: Embrace whimsy The Bookshelf: “The Widows of Malabar Hill” by Sujata Massey Resources: Episode #24 of Deliberate Freelancer: Networking Tips, Especially as an Introvert Episode #6 of Deliberate Freelancer: Make the Most of Conferences Episode #25 of Deliberate Freelancer: Finding Your Community, with She Podcasts Co-Founder Jessica Kupferman She Podcasts Erica Mandy’s The NewsWorthy podcast “Everything is Figureoutable” by Marie Forleo  Phylecia Jones’ iFind You Close Ask the Budgetologist podcast Karen Yankovich and Good Girls Get Rich podcast

Speaking from the stage can be downright terrifying to some people.  It is, in fact, the #1 fear in the world.  However, if you can get in front of the right audiences and on the right stages, you can grow your audience, increase your authority and even build your business faster.  This week I sit down with Phylecia Jones of Keeping Up With Mrs. Jones and she dishes the inside secrets of how she's getting on so many well-known stages and even landed a TED Talk.  Tune in to get the scoop on how to feed your business through speaking. Don't Miss These Tidbits: [08:06] "You know, I think speaking chose me. I try to avoid speaking. It really is. I'm an introvert at heart. I have a degree in computer science and I was a lab rat while I worked for the navy and I was good as a lab rat in, but I did have a secret side. I was a professional cheerleader, so I'm a little oddball at times, but I went through a coaching program and one of the modules was about growing your business through marketing and speaking was one of them. And I remember I just kept flipping past that little section like, yeah, I don't want to do this."   [10:25] "I always say, just get the ovaries to ask. I'm just asked to, hey, can I get on your stage, can I, can I share my story or can I share some tips that have worked with me?"   [16:13] "my husband gave me an idea while we were walking the dog and, and he's a Gamer. He watches people playing video games on twitch and if you don't know what twitches those search it, it is like a nerd haven for all gamers. We don't adult very well in our house, but he was telling me that in order for those, those guys that he watched to grow their subscription base in there, watch your basis that they live stream from five to eight hours every day up to two years. And I was like, Whoa, you know, and my husband, he watches him. He's watching them right now. And, and I was like, I don't know if I can live stream that many hours."   [19:07] "But it really is a weird thing when you go to a conference. They were like, Hey, I've been watching you every morning. It's like, okay, that's cool and creepy at the same time. Who are you?" Sometimes I stand in front of things I want to buy knowing they are outside of my “budget”. I look at sweaters and shoes and first class plane tickets and imagine the day that they will mean the same to me as a cup of coffee. Can you relate? If you are an entrepreneurial minded person you no doubt have those dreams too. However, to make a million dollars, 10 million dollars, $100,000 or even $10,000 it starts with making one dollar and learning how to manage that one dollar. I receive bad advice on the daily about how you have to “spend money to make money”. Not all opportunities are created equal and I have learned that spending more than you are bringing in is never a good idea, not matter what. If that means you clean your own house while you listen to podcasts, do it. If that means you buy the podcast producer but not buy new UGGS, do it. If it means you make it to the team training cross country but fly Spirit, do it. A lot of us are in the middle of the journey. The place where discipline is high and the margins are tight. I am in the place where I am making enough to not go to a job but not enough to buy everything my heart desires. I am open and vocal about these because these are the realities for entrepreneurs and no one is showing up and talking about it. Instead people are posting perceived success on Instagram to mask the fact they are living in a mountain of credit card debt. STOP. I am screaming at the top of my lungs for this to stop and people are finally starting to listen. You CAN attract business partners with real life. You can’t be afraid, you just have to put yourself out there. 80% of American’s are in debt. We need to change that. We need to stop spending and start saving. We need to stop trying to keep up with other people in debt and start being honest about how we need to live right now. Today’s guest is all about this and we get raw and real. Money, money, money! Okay, so two weeks back, we spoke with Meriflor Toneatto on simple, practical tips to manifest more money in your work and in your life. Now, I want to talk about simplifying how you handle the budgeting side of your money, both for your personal finances and for your business. My guest today is Phylecia Jones, a self-proclaimed Budgetologist and money management expert that's going to help us wake up and stop SUCKING at budgeting! In this episode, you will learn: What is the first step to wrangling your personal finances? The J.O.N.E.S. approach to budgeting You'll also get the wake up call you (might) need to manage your business finances better The importance of giving yourself a salary, no matter what How a budget actually gives you power in making good business decisions The difference between “managing” your budget and “feeding” your budget. (spoiler alert: you MUST do both to thrive!) Phylecia and I are kindred spirits as we both love to geek out on spreadsheets and numbers. But I promise this episode is anything but boring. She breaks it all down in simple, simple terms for us to take action on it all, immediately!
