5x15 presents: Isabel Allende - novelist, feminist & philanthropist - in conversation about her new novel Violeta with journalist Alex Clark Isabel Allende is one of the most widely-read authors in the world, having sold more than 75 million books which have been translated into 42 languages. Join 5x15 for this exclusive launch event for her unmissable new novel Violeta. Allende won worldwide acclaim in 1982 with the publication of her first novel, The House of the Spirits. Since then, she has authored more than twenty-five bestselling and critically acclaimed books, including Daughter of Fortune, Island Beneath the Sea, Paula, The Japanese Lover, A Long Petal of the Sea, and her most recent memoir, The Soul of a Woman. Allende's works always entertain and educate readers interweaving imaginative stories with significant historical events. Her new novel is the epic story of Violeta del Valle, a woman whose life spans one hundred years and bears witness to the greatest upheavals of the twentieth century. Violeta comes into the world on a stormy day in 1920. Violeta recounts devastating heartbreak and passionate affairs, times of both poverty and wealth, terrible loss and immense joy, and a life shaped by some of the most important events of history: the fight for women's rights, the rise and fall of tyrants and, ultimately, not one but two pandemics. Through the eyes of a woman whose unforgettable passion, determination, and sense of humour will carry her through a lifetime of upheaval, Isabel Allende once more brings us an epic that is both fiercely inspiring and deeply emotional. In addition to her work as a writer, Allende devotes much of her time to human rights causes. She has received fifteen honorary doctorates, including one from Harvard University, was inducted into the California Hall of Fame, received the PEN Center Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Anisfield-Wolf Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2014, President Barack Obama awarded Allende the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Alex Clark is a critic, journalist and broadcaster who lives in London, and has been Artistic Director for Words and Literature at the Bath Festival. She writes on a wide range of subjects for the Guardian, the Observer, the Spectator and the Times Literary Supplement. She has judged many literary awards, including the 2008 Man Booker prize. She regularly chairs live events, appears on radio and is the host of a monthly podcast for Vintage publishing. 5x15 brings together outstanding individuals to tell of their lives, passions and inspirations. Our guest on Sheer Isolation this week has made it his mission to get the West's youngsters engaged with classical, opera and choir music. Adam Laughton is part of the team at the Wiltshire Music Centre in Bradford-on-Avon - a venue which showcases genres of music traditionally considered highbrow, while ensuring performances are fully inclusive, with workshops, events and rehearsal space to encourage teenagers to take up classical instruments and join youth orchestras and singing groups. On our playlist, Adam picks a live recording performance by Bristol's Fitzhardinge Consort. We also play a track from Wiltshire group, Port Erin, who are making a real-life appearance at this weekend's Bath Festival. This episode was created by Kieran Moore in Chippenham and Jon Ponting in Cricklade. Don't forget to look for us on the schedule of your local community radio station; we're on the airwaves in Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Somerset.

Even for non-dancers, dance gets to the heart of things which matter to them the most. This week, for the final instalment of series 1 of Why Dance Matters, we go into the RAD itself and meet Chief Executive, Luke Rittner. Luke has led the RAD since 1999 and overseen substantial change at the RAD, culminating in a move to a new purpose built global headquarters for the RAD in London's Battersea later this year. Whilst Luke has weathered many storms at the helm of a number of arts organisations, he, along with other arts leaders, could not have predicted how a pandemic and its fallout would hit the industry. How has this time made Luke reflect upon dance, dance teaching and its place in all our lives? And how does Luke see the RAD's new home for dance as a catalyst for change for the organisation at large and an opportunity to strengthen ties with its local communities? We find out in this episode. About Luke Rittner Luke Rittner has been Chief Executive of the RAD since 1999. Previously he was Secretary General of the Arts Council of Great Britain, Communications Director for Sotheby's Europe, and ran the Bath Festival. He was also Founder-Director of the Association for Business Sponsorship of the Arts (now Arts & Business). Luke has served on many arts boards, including the Victoria & Albert Museum and the British Council, and was Chairman of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). He holds honorary doctorates from the Universities of Bath and Durham, and in 2017 was awarded a CBE for services to the arts, particularly dance.Find out more about RAD's new home for dance: https://bit.ly/3wfVnoNFollow the RAD on social media, and join the conversation with host David JaysInstagram @royalacademyofdanceFacebook @RoyalAcademyofDanceTwitter @RADheadquartersYouTube / royalacademydanceDavid Jays @mrdavidjaysSign up to our mailing list: https://bit.ly/3frWPh9RAD is an independent educational charity and does not receive regular government funding. Alright TSP listeners. Happy June to you all. Producer Griff here btw. Me and Craig had a good chat on Monday and the TSP recording machine should be back in effect at the end of the month. But, in the mean time, we're bringing you another banger from the vaults in the form of the infectiously funny Charlie Cooper. Charlie and his talented sister Daisy recently won a Bafta for their brilliant writing on This Country (If you still haven't seen it, get it watched). We thought we'd shed a new light on this episode and give some newer listeners an insight into this brilliant comic mind...Original Text  HAPPY THURSDAY!!!  IT'S OUR PODCAST BIRTHDAY!!! That's right. Can you believe it's a whole year that we've been bringing you episodes?  What a year it's been! We've met some incredible people, heard amazing stories, we've laughed, we've cried and drank many cups of tea along the way. It's been a rollercoaster of a year and we're so grateful you've enjoyed and supported the podcast - THANK YOU!  As it's our birthday, we thought we'd do something a bit spesh and bring you not 1 episodes but 2! Nice birthday treat, eh? We kick things off with the brilliant Charlie Cooper. If you've seen BBC's award winning THIS COUNTRY then you'll know Charlie as one of the writers and stars. Charlie writes with his sister Daisy May Cooper based on where they grew up in a small village in Gloucestershire. It's a brilliant, hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking series and if you haven't seen it then do yourself a favour and get involved. When, a few months back, we were invited to bring the podcast to the wonderful Bath Festival, we wanted to try and get a local guest on, so Charlie was the perfect fit and lucky for us, the stars aligned and dates worked out and this is the result. Craig and Charlie sat down with a sold-out crowd in the beautiful city of Bath on a rainy evening and the conversation began. Think you're gonna love this one. We certainly did. We chatted about all sorts and began with the subject of male models... THANKS SO MUCH FOR DOWNLOADING AND WE'LL SEE YOU IN A BIT FOR ANOTHER BIRTHDAY EPISODE!!! Get in touch...
