The great peaks and valleys of the creative experience, inhabiting similar world views, and moving into a garage apartment. John Calvin Abney "Shortwave radio is a nearly-defunct technology that now exists only on the edge of memory, a tool of niche hobbyists. It is a fitting metaphor, then, for those continuing down a highway without travelers, a dusty trail without service to make a call. On his new EP, Shortwaving, alternative Americana singer-songwriter and in-demand sideman (you might have seen him on stage with artists like John Moreland, Ben Kweller, Wild Child, Hanson, and countless others), John Calvin Abney explores the unease - the fear, even - that comes from repeatedly sending signals into the atmosphere and hearing little but static and silence in response. As Abney puts it in the title track: “Swim the shortwave / Cutting in and out / I'm losing strength in these hills / Between the stations / Is the dark you heard about / Can you hear it now? / Shortwaving still.” The central question of this project is this - what do you do when communication seems to be losing its ability to reach people? For Abney, the answer is to beam your message into the void regardless, almost as an act of faith. The result is a haunting set of country-rock laments, descended from classic end-of-the-party albums like Neil Young's On The Beach and Jason Molina's The Magnolia Electric Co. Chunky minor chords loop on repeat while ghostly slide guitar figures glide in and out of earshot. When Abney sings “There's a devil in the dialtone,” we can hear exactly what he means. Recorded at Columbus, Ohio's Secret Studio in a single day with a small group of friends, including co-producer Lydia Loveless on background vocals and engineering duties, one gets the feeling of accidentally stumbling upon the lost tapes of an obscure Midwestern band, amplifying incantations away in a hidden corner somewhere. These are songs about not being heard that sound almost private, as if they're perhaps not meant to be heard. This intimate quality gives Shortwaving a refreshing lack of self-consciousness. Abney gives the impression of singing these songs primarily to himself, almost as a kind of prayer. While coming to terms with the reality of communicating and creating in an age of noise and glamor, he is attempting to “whisper in a hurricane”. The theme of soldiering on through the cacophony permeates the 5-song set - whether in “Arkansas River Bridge”, where Abney challenges both heaven and the devil to “See me get back up and try,” or in the chorus of “Truckee River Blues”, where Abney sings to both the moon and himself, “Shine on, sickle blade moon / It's too late to go too soon.” Shortwaving's glimmers of hope, the “silver lining on a shadow”, as Abney puts it in the title track, come in a few buoyant musical moments later on in the EP - the chiming sparks of a faraway guitar on the instrumental track “Supporting Actor”, which sounds like it could be lifted straight from the session tapes of Led Zeppelin III, and the triumphant, crashing chords that announce the chorus of final track “Truckee River Blues”. After a dark night of the soul spent swimming in the airwaves, it feels as if John Calvin Abney finally receives his response amidst the droning static and spectral frequencies. It is a reminder of the joy and humanity contained in the very act of moving forward and sending out transmissions on these lost highways. And even though it may be harder to hear than it once was - on certain wavelengths at least, Shortwaving is a lighthouse, helping to navigate memories of what used to be." 1975, Led Zeppelin were at the height of their rock god power. They'd made 5 albums that sold off the charts, especially in the US where they enjoyed the fruits of their labors on the Sunset Strip. They were a top touring act that could fill arenas and stadiums with four of the best individual musicians in any band. They founded Swan Song Records to not only handle their own records but even signed acts like Bad Company and Detective to the label. So after some time off they headed back to Headley Grange where they'd recorded for Led Zeppelin III & IV in early 1974 to lay down some tracks. The results were among the heaviest, funkiest, longest, most epic and groovy songs in the Zeppelin catalog. But because they made more than 1 LP's worth of material, they decided to dust off a few tunes from previous sessions, rework them and fit them all into what would be Zeppelin's only double album, Physical Graffiti. The first album to ship platinum in the US, it would eventually go 16x platinum (but only 2x platinum in the UK). Hitting #1 on both sides of the Atlantic, it's too epic for just one episode. So we've divided into LP/CD one on this episode and UAWIL 219 will go in depth on LP/CD 2. The first disc of Physical Graffiti is an extraordinary album on its own. From the riff & groove of Custard Pie, maybe the best opening track on an LZ album, to the epic and otherworldly Kashmir the boys flex and stretch like they hadn't before. Jimmy Page is at his best laying down killer slide on In My Time Of Dying, riffing out on The Rover and leading the boys in jams on Trampled Under Foot. John Paul Jones is killer on the bass and the clavinet which give different textures to the tunes. John Bonham is at his thunderous best while his mate Robert Plant still had the range and emotion that made him a legend. Going track x track and watching some old Zeppelin footage from Earls Court 1975 and Knebworth 1979 reminds us that we missed one of the greatest bands to walk the Earth and they should be celebrated. This week we take another swing of the hammer of the Gods with Led Zeppelin's 3rd release, Led Zeppelin III. Our guest Karen Haglof came up in the Minneapolis indie music scene in the late 70s, eventually moving to NYC and playing in several of no wave pioneer Rys Chatham's guitar ensembles and later with Band Of Susans, before taking a break to earn a medical degree and join the hematology / oncology department of New York University Hospital.  Recently retired and back at music again, Karen freely credits receiving Jimmy Page and co's eclectic 1970 release at the age of 15 as being pivotal to her future musical explorations. Songs discussed in this episode: Since I've Been Loving You - Corinne Bailey Rae (Live at St. Lukes); The Pursuit Of Happiness - Band Of Susans; One Hand Up, Slinky 66, You're Not Where I Am - Karen Haglof; Whole Lotta Love, Immigrant Song - Led Zeppelin; Carry On - Crosby Stills Nash and Young; Friends - Led Zeppelin; Guitar Trio Pt. 1 - Rhys Chatham & His Guitar Trio; Celebration Day, Since I've Been Loving You, Out On The Tiles - Led Zeppelin; Gallows Pole - Fred Gerlach; Gallows Pole - Led Zeppelin; Knowing That I'm Losing You - The Yardbirds; Tangerine, That's The Way, Bron-Y-Aur Stomp - Led Zeppelin; Have A Cigar - Pink Floyd; Shake 'Em On Down - Booker (Bukka) White; Hats Off To (Roy) Harper - Led Zeppelin; Rte 66 Revisited - Karen Haglof Check out Karen's music: https://karenhaglof.bandcamp.com/

LED ZEPPELIN III might just be one of the most perfectly ideal albums for fall as it contains all of the essential components of fall: subtle stoner vibes, a folksy, medieval, Tolkien-esque feel, and a general all around magical and mystical nature. It's a vastly unique album and is (sonically speaking) more radically different than anything else in their catalog.   Led Zeppelin's sonic palette has always been about the utilization of various textures, whether through Robert Plant's lyrical imagery and vocal delivery, Jimmy Page's guitar and string arrangements, or the sheer sonic weight of the mighty rhythm section that is “The Two Johns”, there is no other album that perfectly captures the spirit and energy of autumn quite like LED ZEPPELIN III. We're back this week to dive deep into the discography of one of the greatest rock bands of all time, Led Zeppelin. Specifically, we'll be exploring their albums released between 1969 and 1973, picking our favorite and least favorite songs from each. Led Zeppelin, the iconic rock band formed in 1968, released their self-titled debut album in 1969. The album featured a diverse range of rock and blues-influenced tracks, showcasing the band's talent and establishing their unique sound. The album opens with the energetic "Good Times Bad Times" and includes other standout tracks like "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You," "Dazed And Confused," and "Communication Breakdown." Led Zeppelin's debut album set the stage for their future success and solidified their status as one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Led Zeppelin II - 1969 Following the success of their debut, Led Zeppelin released their second album, Led Zeppelin II, later in 1969. The album featured a heavier sound and showcased the band's growth as songwriters and performers. It includes the iconic track "Whole Lotta Love," along with other notable songs such as "What Is and What Should Never Be," "Heartbreaker," and "Ramble On." Led Zeppelin II further established the band's dominance in the rock music scene and demonstrated their ability to create powerful and memorable rock anthems. Led Zeppelin III - 1970 In 1970, Led Zeppelin released their third studio album, Led Zeppelin III. This album showcased a more acoustic and folk-influenced sound compared to their previous releases. It includes tracks like "Immigrant Song," "Since I've Been Loving You," and "Gallows Pole," which blend the band's signature rock sound with elements of folk and blues. Led Zeppelin III displayed the band's versatility and willingness to experiment with different musical styles, earning critical acclaim and further expanding their fan base. Led Zeppelin IV - 1971 Led Zeppelin's fourth album, commonly known as Led Zeppelin IV or untitled, was released in 1971 and became one of the band's most iconic and commercially successful albums. It features the legendary track "Stairway to Heaven," a monumental rock epic that has become one of the most celebrated songs in rock history. The album also includes other hits such as "Black Dog," "Rock and Roll," and "When the Levee Breaks." Led Zeppelin IV solidified the band's status as rock legends and remains a classic album revered by fans and musicians alike. Houses of the Holy - 1972 In 1972, Led Zeppelin released their fifth studio album, Houses of the Holy. The album continued to push the boundaries of their sound, incorporating elements of funk, reggae, and even orchestral arrangements. Tracks like "The Song Remains the Same," "The Rain Song," and "No Quarter" showcased the band's musical maturity and their ability to create dynamic and atmospheric compositions. Houses of the Holy further cemented Led Zeppelin's reputation as one of the most innovative and influential rock bands of their time. Episode 4 of the brand new Season 6 kicked off at precisely 19h00 on 26 Jan 2023 on Rebel Rock Radio.  First up was a band who are no strangers to TSORR, Great White with ‘Never Trust a Pretty Face'.  We had a nice up-tempo start cycling through Motor Sister, and Accept and then took a huge step back into the past with the ever-fresh sound of Creedence Clearwater Revival and ‘Green River', from there we went to Aussie for some Cold Chisel and a track called ‘Misfits'.  We stayed there for Airborne and moved on to Tesla via Halestorm and a track called Legendary which of course she is. Lzzy Hale is the real deal.  The Tesla track was ‘Gettin' Better' off the RePlugged Live album which is amazing.  Tesla fans check it out.   Black Star Riders (without Scott Gorham) released a new album last week called Wrong Side of Paradise, we listened to the title track.  It's one of those that fall into the ‘Songs that could be about South Africa' category.  Talking of that we also had ‘Losing More Than You Ever Had' (Accept) and ‘Stand & Deliver (Airbourne) as further examples.   Def Leppard's colossal breakthrough album Pyromania turned 40 this week and KISS main man Paul Stanley turned 70.  We celebrated with Rock, Rock (Till You Drop), and Love Gun' respectively. 'Peace is Free' from Black stone Cherry calmed things down a bit, and we stayed calm with ‘Soul' from 12th Avenue and wished Mark Haze, vocalist extraordinaire who formed 12th Avenue,  a speedy recovery from the back-op he had this week.  Linkin Park with ‘One Step Closer' sounded great and then we got to Megadeth with 'Life in Hell' off their latest album and a brand new track from Metallica called ‘Screaming Suicide'.  TSORR predicts that 2023 will be Metallica's year.  They seem to have hit a sweet spot and are feeling the love and appreciation of the people of Planet Earth.  The South African stuff was, as we say in these parts, 'poes heavy'.  Kill Frenzy out of Cape Town and Diverted Disorder from the Vaal gave us our weekly dose of Linda take a walk music.  Check out both bands if you dig the heavier stuff. This week's Immortal track came from Led Zep with 'Since I've Been Loving You' off Led Zeppelin III.  We had UK Punk courtesy of Sex Pistols, The Stranglers, and Stiff Little Fingers which led us to U2 with 'I Will Follow'.  Prepare to hear a lot of U2, I am busy with Bono's book Surrender, it is a great read.  Even if you are not a fan it is so rich with descriptions of the times, places, and characters of the times that it is well worth delving into.  the Audible version brings it all to life.  We ended with Slayer and another song that could be about South Africa called 'Seasons In the Abyss'.     Artists featured:  Great White, Jorn, Motor Sister, Accept, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Cold Chisel, Airbourne, Ratt, Halestorm, Nickelback, Tesla, John Mellencamp, Black Star Riders. Phil X & the Drills, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, KISS, The Black Crowes, White Zombie, Emigrate, Glenn Hughes, Black Stone Cherry, 12th Avenue, Linkin Park, Megadeth, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Sex Pistols, Stiff Little Fingers, The Stranglers, U2, Me and That Man, Kill Frenzy, Diverted Disorder, Piet Botha, Windowpane, Slayer. The Story of Rock and Roll. Filled with many acoustic offerings, the album still boasts several hard hitting classic Led Zeppelin songs, like Immigrant Song, Celebration Day and Out On The Tiles. After a grueling tour schedule Robert Plant and Jimmy Page decided to go to a cottage without running water or electicity in Bron-Yr-Aur, Wales. The two work on their songwriting with only acoustic guitars and a tape recorded. The results are the classic acoustic numbers on Led Zeppelin and other songs that would filter onto future Led Zeppelin releases. The band felt free to do whatever music they so desired. Led Zeppelin III was not only filled with rockers, but folk songs, ballads and perhaps their signature blues song, the classic, "Since I've Been Loving You." Although Led Zeppelin III went to Number 1 in the USA and the UK and went 6 times platinum in the United States, the album is still overlooked and definitely underratted, Led Zeppelin III is an album from a band with no limits to their musicianship or their lyrics and still on the ascension! The Zeppelin Chronicles breaks down Led Zeppelin III SIOL style. The guys discuss their connection with the album, the background of the album, the album cover and finally the songs. They rank the songs, then rank the album and album cover against the two previous Led Zeppelin albums reviewed. So tune in, follow, download and subscribe or face the "Hammer Of The Gods!" For all things Shout It Out Loudcast check out our amazing website by clicking below: www.ShoutItOutLoudcast.com Interested in more Shout It Out Loudcast content?  Care to help us out?  Come join us on Patreon by clicking below: SIOL Patreon Shop At Our Amazon Store by clicking below: Shout It Out Loudcast Amazon Store Please go to Klick Tee Shop for all your Shout It Out Loudcast Merchandise by clicking below:SIOL Merchandise at Klick Tee Shop Please Email us comments or suggestions by clicking below:ShoutItOutLoudcast@Gmail.com Please subscribe to us and give us a 5 Star (Child) review on the following places below:iTunesPodchaserStitcheriHeart RadioSpotify  Please follow us and like our social media pages clicking below:TwitterFacebook PageFacebook Group Page Shout It Out LoudcastersInstagramYouTube Proud Member of the Pantheon Podcast click below to see the website:Pantheon Podcast Network

Hey all you collectivists out there. This is Scott G from the Sonic Collective. How's it going? We're on round three of our game of "What's the connection between these albums?" I hope you've been enjoying it as much as we have. I've really enjoyed teasing out what the common threads are between the albums Darren and Scott C picked. Hearing what everyone thought were the direct links along with their more nuanced takes. So I've picked three albums that also have some very explicit connections I'm hoping everyone finds along with the different subleties we'll each key on and share. This month's albums are, in no particular order: Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin III, Simon and Garfunkle, Bookends, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd. Now I know what you're thinking, "Hey these albums are practically identical, how are we supposed to pick just a couple similarities???" But I have faith you all will listen along, jot down some notes and join us at the end of the month to hear what the crew teased out too. Until then, this is Scott G from the Sonic Collective signing off.

Terry Manning may not be a household name but he's had an incredible journey that started at the age of 13 when he sat in with Bobby Fuller at a Junior High Dance. From there he went to work at the legendary STAX RECORDS when he was just 15 years old! We couldn't possibly cover everything so some things we talk about in this hour and a half interview are : Bobby Fuller, Stevie Nicks, Stax Records, Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin III, NME magazine, Martin Luther King Jr., Chris Blackwell (founder of island records), Photography and more! It's an interview you have to hear to believe Terry's incredible stories.  A man who seemed to be at the right place at the right time and more than once.   ABOUT TERRY: Terry Manning is a music producer, songwriter, photographer, recording engineer and artist known for work in rock, rhythm and blues, and pop music genres.   Manning began in the music industry in El Paso, Texas, where he played guitar and sang with several local bands, notably The Wild Ones, and on a couple of occasions sat in with his friend Bobby Fuller. Upon leaving El Paso, he moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he worked for years at both Stax Records and Ardent Studios as an engineer and producer, recording and mixing such artists as Isaac Hayes, Ike & Tina Turner, Booker T. & The MG's, Eddie Floyd, Al Green, Rufus Thomas, Sam & Dave, Billy Eckstine, Otis Redding, The Boxtops, Percy Sledge, The Staple Singers, Johnnie Taylor, Leon Russell, Ronnie Milsap, and many others. Manning was a principal part of Stax owner Al Bell's production team for The Staple Singers, responsible for such hit records as “Respect Yourself,” “I'll Take You There,” and "Heavy Makes You Happy.”   In 1970, Manning licensed release of his own solo album, Home Sweet Home, on Stax's Enterprise label (re-released with extra tracks by Sunbeam in 2006, and in original configuration on Four Men With Beards vinyl label in 2012).   Later working as an independent, Manning produced or engineered recordings by Joe Cocker, Wattstax, Alex Chilton, Big Star, James Taylor, Leon Russell, Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top, Jason & The Scorchers, Rhino Bucket, George Thorogood and The Destroyers, Joe Walsh, Johnny Winter, The Rainmakers, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Molly Hatchet, The Angels, Johnny Diesel and The Injectors, Lenny Kravitz, Jimmy Buffett, Shakira, Crash Test Dummies, Shania Twain, Bryan Adams, Widespread Panic, and many others.   In the mid 1980s Manning moved to London, and worked for a year out of Abbey Road Studios.   As a photographer, Manning began with black and white in the mid-1960s, capturing street scenes and topics of his interest. He has continued his photography to this day. Adding color photography to his repertoire in the1970s, Manning amassed a large collection of private works over the following years. With the beginning of Gallery and Museum presentations in 2015, Manning's photography is now being presented in Exhibitions across the US, as well as world locations. Musically, he also photographed Chuck Berry, Terry Reid, Steppenwolf, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Dusty Springfield, Procol Harum and many other musical artists of the rock period as both an independent and as a writer/photographer for New Musical Express. Manning was one of the last to photograph his acquaintance, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on the day before the tragic assassination.   1991 saw him founding Lucas Engineering, a boutique audio company which makes professional audio recording gear; this company expanded in 2008, adding microphones to their arsenal of products. Lucas Microphones, under Manning's guidance, have since become amongst the top high end recording devices in the audio world.   In 1992, Chris Blackwell of Island Records fame sought out Manning as a partner to revitalize Blackwell's famous Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas, which Manning operated successfully for over 20 years.   Manning's newest music as an artist are the 2021 single "What's the Use",  the ECR Music Group/Lucky Seven Records releases of Manning's newest (2019) live album “Playin' In Elvis' House,” 2015's “Heaven Knows,” an emotional look into human emotion, and “West Texas Skyline,” A Tribute To Bobby Fuller, released in October 2013.   Be sure to visit Terry's website's at: (www.terrymanning.com and www.themanninggallery.com) Jim and Mike Talk Music can be found on Podbean, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts.   You can also view a portion of the video interview with Terry on YouTube (search Jim and MIke Talk Music to find our channel)   Thank you for listening!   COYRIGHT CLAIM: The songs "What's the Use", "I Ain't Got You", "Let Her Dance" and "West Texas Skyline" used with permission from Terry Manning.

Danny and Rich try something new on this show by turning their focus on one album. The first album they have for this idea is Led Zeppelin III. They break down the album and maybe add a song to give the whole thing a little more depth.

Whether hiking through the Alps, rock climbing in the Gunks, or hammering mountainous 100-mile races all over the US, you will not find a more amiable outdoor companion than Tom Kaplan—and you will not find an athlete more willing to push themselves past their breaking point. We welcomed the great TK into the Cave after his recent finish at the Bear 100 to talk about rock climbing, his mercurial Ironman career, how he was able to overcome DNFs in his first nine attempts at the 100-mile distance (and what kept him coming back again and again), how he (kind of) invented Strava, and more.Beer: Southern Tier 8 Days a WeekTK's IGDesert Island Picks: Coors Light; The Gulag Archipelago by Aleksander Solzhenitsyn; Led Zeppelin III (though Tom later clarified he actually meant Zep IV, and said he wishes he'd picked The Last Waltz instead)Intro music: "Fine Line" by the BloodlettersOutro music: "When I Was Still Young" by Yard Sale

Sifting through the various dietary and nutritional approaches to our sport (vegan! low carb! gluten-free! fruitarian!) can be confusing and, frankly, exhausting. Don't worry, though: elite runner/nutrition PhD/Ultrarunning magazine coverboy Jonathan Clinthorne joins us in the Pain Cave to help us sort through it all. We talked about his background as the second-fastest ultrarunning former lacrosse player to graduate from Michigan State, various approaches to a traditional carbohydrate-rich approach, the benefits and limitations of a low-carbohydrate/ketogenic diet, and more.LinksA little background on JonathanOur interview with the fastest ultrarunning former lacrosse-playing MSU gradThe Art and Science of Low-Carbohydrate PerformanceThe recent IAAF Consensus Statement for nutrition in athletesDesert Island Picks: The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet, Led Zeppelin III, Bell's Two-Hearted IPAIntro music: "Fine Line" by the BloodlettersOutro music: "When I Was Still Young" by Yard Sale
