There’s a great video from early last year. Taken onstage at the End of the Road Festival, Ezra Furman is tasked with interviewing John Cale. You get pretty much what you’d expect from the Velvet Underground founder — soft spoken, deliberately thoughtful answers. Furman, clearly a massive fan, is far more excitable. Above all, they’re searching for a connection with the legendary musician on topics of creativity and songwriting. It’s a both endearing and insightful view of a musician like Furman, who appears to prefer to retain some mystery around their own process. And certainly there’s a strong argument to be made for letting the music speak for itself. Recent releases like Twelve Nudes and Transangelic Exodus have become of some of the most celebrated indie rock releases of the past decade. On a recent trip to Boston, Furman joined us for a thoughtful discussion about the personal, the professional, gender, religion and the ups and downs of the creative process.

It’s the last episode of the season, and what a guest to end with! Sarah is an Australian comedian now living in London, which she’s called home since 2002. Sarah and I met working at Glastonbury Festival’s radio station, Worthy FM, about eight years ago, when I was drawn to her cheerful nature and (obviously) cracking sense of humour. In this episode we discuss the realities of moving half way around the world without a secure job, the romance vs reality of moving abroad, and the mood in London around Brexit. Thanks for listening to season two Non/Native, and a big thank you to all the incredible guests we've had so far. Don't forget to subscribe to be notified when season three begins in autumn! Imogen talks to the big names behind The Long Road festival, interviewing Andy Brown, Kevin McGuire, Holloway Road and Charlie Worsham in this jam-packed festival special.
James sat down for a chat with Jack and Rob of Holloway Road at the recent Long Road Festival in Leicestershire. The boys have just released their new, 6 track EP, 'Broke' and it's the best thing they've ever done. Cracking mix of country guitars and pop sensibilities in that inimitable Holloway Road style. The chat was so good we decided to put it out so you can hear it in full rather than read words on a page. It's a bit noisy in the background because of the other interviews but you can hear James, Jack and Rob perfectly fine. Enjoy. Check out our other interviews from the Long Road Festival at www.lyricmagazine.co.uk
In this special edition of the podcast, James caught up with Jess and the Bandits for a chat before their performances at the Long Road festival in Leicestershire. The interview went so well it wasn't really like an interview, more like a chat between friends so we decided to release it in it's entirety. Jess & the boys talk with warmth and humour about current album, 'Smoke & Mirrors' and about their place in the UK Country scene and even drop of few hints of what we can expect from them in the future. Enjoy. Check out our other reviews and interviews at www.lyricmagazine.co.uk

There are thousands of festivals in the UK each year and millions of us go to them. But as an organiser how do you make any money? Do logistics and the British weather make them a risky business? Every year festivals get cancelled and some cease trading. Profit margins are tight, say organisers, and set-up costs are high. A big festival may have to pay more a million pounds to secure a top headline act. Evan Davis and guests discuss mud, music and hard cash. Guests: Syima Aslam, co-founder and director of the Bradford Literature Festival Ian Stockley, chief executive of the Bath Festivals. Simon Taffe, co-founder of the End of The Road Festival.

Episode 10 of Picky Bastards sees Matt, Nick, and Fran take an imaginary (and very early) trip to End of the Road Festival. We discuss new music with albums from Gruff Rhys, Protomartyr, Soccer Mommy, and Ezra Furman. This month's classic album is I Can Hear The Heart Beating as one by Yo La Tengo, and Matt tells us why he loves Big Thief. All artists will appear at End of The Road 2018.

End of the Road festival 2015 kicks off this weekend. It’s our favourite UK festival and we’re delighted to investigate some of the amazing bill on this week’s podcast. From old favourites Brakes, to Sufjan Stevens via podcast luminaries Fumaça Preta and the incredible This is the Kit. There’s lots to savour for regular listeners as well as festival goers
Yes, another podcast dedicated entirely to the End of the Road Festival. I did the very same last year because I do rather love this festival, and the sheer quality of the lineup easily merits a podcast to itself. Unlike last year, Mrs. Toad actually came with me this time around. We drove this stupid old 1960s VW camper van down there, and Christ knows how we didn't die in the process. The fucking thing steered like a bathtub full of water, there were no brakes at all and the only crumple zone was us. The other disconcerting thing is the fact that VW campers are something of a community, so everyone who passed us in one would flash their lights and wave with the sort of sincere enthusiasm that made us mortally ashamed to be mere renters - mere passengers in a club full of such obviously devoted members, Christ we felt like charlatans. Anyway, ignore our guilt and enjoy the podcast. There's some fucking great music on this one. And why is it called the Deathcast? Because that blasted camper van we drove down in was an absolute death trap. Honestly, want to die in a nasty accident? Try driving a 60s VW camper van around the English countryside in the middle of the night in the pissing rain. Bill Oddie, for those of you who don't know, is a legendary British television birdwatcher - twitcher as they're known. He is also the subject of one of the most famous of all mondegreens: Madonna's "Bill Oddie, Bill Oddie, put your hands all over my body". Anyhow, as a legendary feather flutterer it seemed only appropriate that his name should adorn a podcast entirely made up of bands with ornithological names. We have everything here, from the albatross to the gull to the guillemot to the owl to the sparrow to the pigeon. Honestly, this podcast could have been twice the length that it is, there were just so many appropriate bands - no Flock of Seagulls, for example, no Sparrow & the Workshop, no Sheryl Crow. So I hope you enjoy it. While you're listening to this, Mrs. Toad and I will be enjoying the End of the Road Festival, and hopefully getting a few interesting interviews in for you all. It'll be my first ever attendance as a legitimate press person, so I am feeling very full of myself at the moment, but with a bit of luck I'll justify the inflated sense of self-importance and bring back some fine bits and pieces for you to enjoy in the next week or two. There’s no real theme to this week’s podcast, but there’s plenty of splendid new music. Basically I felt so guilty about the crazy rant that the Pink Podcast descended into that I have tried to say as little as possible in this one. I’m off to the End of the Road Festival this weekend, which is why I recorded an advance post, so you’ll be enjoying this while I’m away getting rained on. The lineup is just phenomenal actually, so it should be really quite a splendid weekend. Tim from the Daily Growl will be there, as will Jamie from the Runout Groove and I believe possibly Sweeping the Nation as well, so it may turn into quite a blog-in. Tragically, however, I will be without my Midget Companion. Mrs. Toad is away in Australia (jammy bitch) with work and doesn’t get back in time to come along, so I will be taking a book and enjoying the pleasure of my own company as best I can. There was at least one inevitable balls-up though - when describing the Catherine Howe song I said ‘I can’t believe this is current - it sounds so old-fashioned!’ and I have since discovered that in fact it is a 2007 re-release of a 1971 record which may just explain that. In the process I also discovered that I am something of a fucking idiot. So, End of the Road, and in the meantime, enjoy the podcast - Toad on his very best behaviour!
