Does the difference of a W or L in the box score dictate how you respond for the rest of the week? Or do most of your conversations with your family and friends revolve around your favorite football team?If you answered yes to any (or maybe all) of these questions, then you are in the right place. The host of this podcast truly believes that “Football Is Family” and he is on a mission to share the stories of other fans out there sharing how they have been touched by the greatest sport on Earth. Listen below to the trailer and learn more about the host and show.HOST - JEREMY MCFARLINGrowing up in Middle Tennessee, I didn't have a pro football team that was close enough to me to feel a part of. My first memory of pro football was Super Bowl 22. I picked the Broncos to win, and, even though they didn't win, I followed them from that point on.John Elway was (and is) my favorite player. I have played as the Broncos on Tecmo Bowl, Tecmo Bowl Super Bowl, Madden, and 2K Sports. I fondly remember the moments when the Broncos won Super Bowls 32 and 33.Around this time, the Oilers came to Tennessee. I was hooked. I finally had a team just down the road from my hometown of Bon Aqua. Oiler (and later Titans) mania hit this area. Jerseys, hats, footballs, merchandise, and several autographs later, I'm a Titans fan through and through. It's the dedication, the love, and the passion for football that helps me realize that football is family. Each fan base has a story, a history, and a love for their team. That's what I want to talk about each and every podcast. You can follow me @jeremy_mcfarlin. Message me if you want to share your reasons why your football team is family.

About Grange's Legendary Performance in the 1924 Dedication Game On Oct. 18, 1924, Red Grange put together one of the greatest performances the college football world has ever seen. On the day of Memorial Stadium's Dedication Game and against a Michigan team that arrived in Champaign on a 20-game unbeaten streak, Grange glided through the Wolverine defense with ease. He set the tone early with a 95-yard return on the opening kickoff, and he was only just getting started. Five minutes later, he recorded his second score of the game, this time on a 67-yard rush. Within the opening 12 minutes of play, he amassed four touchdowns, and he finished the contest with six total scores and over 400 total yards of offense. The Wolverines allowed only 32 points during their 20-game unbeaten run. In the Illini's 39-14 win over Michigan, Red Grange accounted for 36 points on his own. Earning the now-iconic "Galloping Ghost" nickname following a performance that remains unrivaled one century later, Grange cemented himself in college football history forever. "Michigan never knew Red Grange, the Illinois wildcat, until today. Now Michigan knows him well," wrote James Crusinberry of the Chicago Tribune in 1924. "He stamped himself as one of the greatest football stars of all time, East or West."

Each of us brings our pick for an obscure or underrated mounted gun game but one game is so obscure we invite the only person known to own it onto the podcast - Doc Mack from The Galloping Ghost arcade! Who is giving all these zombies guns? What American city has its own arcade game named after it? Are birthday cake Oreos really as gross as we make them out to be (yes)? Will an arcade game nearly 30 years in the making ever come out? Some listener questions get some love as Jarrod answers the three films he most recently watched (and they are on brand) and we identify what game is missing from The Galloping Ghost lineup. The Galloping Ghost, race number 177, was flown by its owner, James Kent Leeward. At 16:24:28.9 Pacific Daylight Time, The Galloping Ghost‘s angle of bank rapidly increased from 73° to 93° in just 0.83 seconds. The air racer, corrected by its pilot's aileron input, rolled back to the right, but then violently pitched up and the pilot became unconscious. The airplane essentially flew itself into an inside loop, then crashed into the ground directly in front of a seating area. The Galloping Ghost was totally destroyed. Jimmy Leeward and 11 spectators were killed, with at at least 69 others injured.“And so what we found with the trim tab was that the elastic stopped nuts, which are there to give enough friction so that the bolts can't work their way loose. The elastic stopped nuts were too old and too worn and the bolts were able to back out and give some slop to the hinge points of that trim tab. And at the speed Jimmy was going, that airplane went fast enough that that trim tab fluttered, which means it's bouncing back and forth. It couldn't stand the stresses and the trim tab broke off. And at that point, that 17 G pitch up happened.” -Hoot Gibson.Hoot Gibson's Hangar, aviation's premier podcast, hosted by America's premier aviator, Hoot Gibson, “The Man That Can Fly Anything."Don't miss a single episode. When Football Is Football is part of the Sports History Network - The Headquarters For Sports Yesteryear.EPISODE SUMMARYSome may claim that Chicago has a bad reputation…and not necessarily just in football! Much of this aura stems from the glorified gangster days of the 1920s and 1930s when Al Capone and his cohorts ruled the Chicago area underworld. These were not nice people, but Capone attempted to position the reality of his local status by claiming to be just another businessman. He offered help to the needy and opened soup kitchens to help feed the hungry during the early days of the Great Depression......Read the entire episode blog post and check out some other cool info regarding this episode here.WHEN FOOTBALL WAS FOOTBALL BACKGROUNDEach episode takes the listener back to the very early days of the National Football League. Author Joe Ziemba will share a forgotten or lost story from one of the NFL's two oldest teams: The Bears and the Cardinals. Team championships, individual exploits, or long-buried items of interest from the earliest years of the NFL will be dusted off and resurrected for the listener. Not for the football faint-of-heart since these programs will document when the struggling Bears nearly went out of business or when Cardinals' players earned $15 a game and were proud of it! What's that? A radio is being broadcast across the entire ship. Not a man is moving as everyone has their ears listening closely to the announcement from President Franklin D. Roosevelt from radio signal coming in from CBS and NBC Radio. PRESIDENT FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT DECLARING WAR ON MONDAY, DECEMBER 8, 1941 AFTER JAPANESE EMPIRE BOMBED PEARL HARBOR ON SUNDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1941 I rushed back up to the place I had landed my time machine, and was quickly lifted away until I found myself nestled in the bed in my quarters on the USS Houston. It was near sunset on February 28, 1942 The ship I was on, the U.S.S. Houston, Admiral Tommy Hart's former Asiatic flagship, had vanished off the radar without a trace somewhere off the Northwest coast of Java. The mystery of this great warship remained complete until the war ended and small groups of survivors were discovered in Japanese prisoner of war camps, scattered from the island of Java through the Malay Peninsula, the jungles of Burma and Thailand, and northward to the Islands of Japan. Of the 1,008 officers and men who manned her, including myself, approximately 350 escaped from the sinking ship, only to be captured in the jungles of Java, or as they floundered helplessly in the sea. Of the original survivors, only 266 lived through the ordeal of filth and brutal treatment brutally handed out to them in the Japanese prisoner of war camps. To me the story of the U.S.S. Houston, especially during the last three weeks of her valiant battle against overwhelming odds, is one of the greatest epics of the United States Navy, yet historians of World War II seem to have neglected it almost completely. Not only that. In 1970, my mother was given a typewritten manuscript from my Uncle who was one of the 266 who lived through the ordeal of… as I put it… filth and brutal treatment. My story today is long overdue. In 2016, I wrote a novel called “The Galloping Ghost from the Java Coast,” which finally told the story of the brave and gallant 266 men, but I was asked not to publish it. It still sits quietly on my computer, but I have decided to tell part of the story in the 2-Part Podcast as a memorial to all the brave men on the USS Houston during World War II. My time machine comes in really handy but I could have been killed just as easily as any other man on that fateful night back in '42. What happened to the USS Houston that night was a nightmare of many years standing, yet each incident of that wild battle still lives on in my mind as vividly as though it happened only a few minutes ago. In reality, it actually did, but jumping from one time to another can be very exhausting as you have heard in previous podcasts. For those of us over a certain age, who have loved professional football, be it in Canada or America, we have come to it through two primary means- books and film. For those of who truly love books we have gained a deeper understanding of the game through the words and literary artistry of writers like Chris Willis, who is the resident historian at NFL Films, where he oversees all aspects of research for the company and their producers. In 2002 he was nominated for an Emmy for his work on the HBO documentary- The Game of Their Lives: Pro Football in the 1950's." He is a member of the Professional Football Researchers Association (PFRA) since 1993 and writes for the Pro Football Journal. In addition to his work with NFL Films, he has authored many fine books. Notre Dame Four Horsemen to First NFL Commissioner - Elmer Layden Elmer Layden is not a household name nowadays. However, back in the early 1920s, he was a quarter of the famed Notre Dame Four Horsemen. These guys were one of the most famous College football backfields of all-time. Elmer’s participation with the Four Horsemen started him on the path to fame and glory, ultimately leading to him becoming the First NFL Commissioner. To get a better understanding, we have to take it all the way back to the beginning. This is where we stop the DeLorean this week. The date is May 4, 1903. Layden was born on this date in Davenport, Iowa. His full name was Elmer Francis Layden. As with most heroes of the podcast, Elmer was an All-State legend in Iowa in High School. His position was the fullback. The fullback position wasn’t quite the same back in the early 20th century as it is today. Back then it was more of a focal point. Now we’re lucky to see a fullback on the field. As a Freshman for the Fighting Irish, Elmer was relegated to backup duty where he had to share reps as a quarterback with Harry Struhldreher. By his Junior year, Layden was given full control of the fullback duties for what would ultimately become the famous Notre Dame Four Horsemen. This group of players would form one of the most famous backfields in American Football History. The other members besides Elmer Layden were Jim Crowly, Don Miller, and Harry Struhldreher. These 4 men were an unstoppable force on the field. Grantland Rice is credited with coining the nickname - The Four Horsemen. He is one of the most influential sportswriters in history. It was perfect timing for Rice to be around, as he wrote of myths and legends in sports during an era that was called "The Golden Age of Sports". They sure did break the mold with Grantland Rice. I talked about Grantland giving the nickname Galloping Ghost back in the Red Grange episode. Do you remember that episode and the captivating poem written by Red Grange? Well, guess what, that game occurred on the exact same day as the game that led to the Notre Dame Four Horsemen. That day was October 18, 1924. On this day, Grantland Rice changed the way people looked at football forever more. I say this is easily one of the more important dates in sports writing history. The Galloping Ghost poem was an inspiring performance from an individual player. However, Grantland's depiction of The Four Horsemen was of a group of men that just bowled over the opposition. The poem went as such: "Outlined against a blue, gray October sky, the Four Horsemen rode again. In dramatic lore, they were known Support this podcast

FUL DESCRIPTION Summary As we step off our DeLorean in this episode, the date is June 13, 1903. We are in Forksville, Pennsylvania. This is the date and birthplace of our hero, Harold Edward Grange, whom would later become the Galloping Ghost. His mother would pass away when he was 5, so his father moved the family to Wheaton, Illinois. Most people call him Red Grange, and he would proceed to make his mark on the football world at Wheaton High School. After an incredible High School career, Red Grange would be recruited to play football for the University of Illinois. He entered Illinois in 1922, and he played football in the 1923 through 1925 seasons. Red Grange would be given the honor of All-American each of his three seasons. In his first game, Grange scored 3 touchdowns against Nebraska. His claim to stardom came in the 1924 season against an undefeated Michigan team. He would have a spectacular individual performance that would catapult him into iconic status. More details are given throughout the episode. Red Grange would ultimately use his college greatness to be signed by the Chicago Bears for George Halas. His debut game would be 10 days after his last college game, which would be on Thanksgiving Day. The game would draw 36,000 fans, the most for a professional game at the time. This game had wild success, so Halas and Grange’s agent (C.C. Pyle) set up a “barnstorming tour†across the United States. One stop was in New York to take on the Giants at New York’s Polo Grounds in front of 70,000 raving fans. Grange would end up playing 8 games in 12 days in the Midwest and East, and then his tour out West would include 9 more games. The highlight out West would include a defeat of the Los Angeles Tigers in Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in front of 75,000 rowdy fans. The Galloping Ghost was a legend after this “barnstorming tour,†and his agent C.C. (Cash and Carry) Pyle had plenty of lofty... Support this podcast

There is a retired fleet of ships now docked at the Baltimore Maritime Museum, each with its own history of battle and death and now with a legacy of hauntings. The USS Torsk is a Tench Class submarine emblazoned with the fierce grin of a shark that became the Galloping Ghost of the Japanese during World War II. The USCGC Taney is a Coast Guard Cutter that is the last ship floating that fought at Pearl Harbor and it participated in the search for Amelia Earhart. The USS Constellation has the distinction of being the first ship built for the Unites States Navy and it also has the distinction of being one of the most haunted locations in Maryland. That is probably because it not only fought in several wars, but it was involved in battling against pirates and the slave trade in Africa. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of these haunted ships of Baltimore! The Moment in Oddity features Organized Crime's Bee Heist of 2017 and This Month in History features the deadliest school mass murder in America. During the dark days after Pearl Harbor, as the Japanese advanced unchecked through the Pacific, the cruiser USS Houston fought bravely against that unstoppable tide. Though her fate was sealed, she fought to the very end, sinking with her guns still firing, and the sacrifice of her crew inspired the nation. This week we talk about the USS Houston, the Galloping Ghost of the Java Coast.
